To those of you out there who shop at Beacons here is the icing on the cake --and its pretty sad. I promised myself not to let the evil , nasty witch power pull me into this store any more but one day it did and you can't make this story up. An elderly woman (75) came in with a shopping cart of things to sell and there in front of me and this sweet women and everyone else at the counter with us are the witch workers who are looking through her things and actually laughing at her clothes. Imagine laughing at them! She had some really pretty aprons and honestly some lovely vintage slips that sorry to say I would have loved to have bought from her. Well, the witches sent her on her way with an "I'm sorry nothing here that we want". I ask you, how low can you get. Okay ,The only way, as a person with a soul, can figure this seen out is to assume that these Witches flew on there brooms from somewhere west of here to work at Beacons for the soul purpose of humiliating this poor, sweet elderly women and others like her. Here's my issue with the elitist beautique that I keep giving chances to because it keeps being in my walking proximity. I have seen them not accept things for buying have seen people donate the clothes and then found them on the racks later. The selections are frequently overpriced although they remain a great last minute chance of finding something dope. And today I went in two by two items but they wouldn't accept my cash, the purchase was for $47 but they don't accept $50 bills they asked me to go to a store but they didn't have one within walking proximity that they knew would provide the exchange. They've grown their business off of being Community appox but they haven't actually engage with said community. The shop has turned into one that doesn't need the geography around its storefront to exist. Really disappointing experience. I should have read all the other reviews before going there. I wanted to sell about 20 garments, all designer, all small sizes, all brand new or nearly. Some had pricey tags from fancy stores. These items were originally worth over $5000 retail. I spent about $13 in taxi fare to get there ad the same to get home. After the debutante buyers reviewed my items they chose only THREE, offering me a total of $16! I was so shocked I just stood there for a moment, trying to decide if I should leave the rest of the stuff to be donated to a church charity, which i did, only because it was counterproductive to drag it all back. After reading the post about their charity partner, I'm sorry I didn't bring it all back. I REALLY SUSPECT THEY WILL EITHER SELL THE OTHER DRESSES OR WILL WEAR THEM THEMSELVES. I actually did a major test on them recently. I gathered a few items that ive collected over the years, some NEVER worn. Most items were actually FROM Beacons, and may have even been purchased this year from them. All in 8/10 condition, no major flaws just usual wear. They took my bag pf items and gave me a 30 minute wait time. I returned, for them to tell me "We decided that none of your items suit our store, but we appreciate you trying to sell to us. If you dont want to items, you can donate them to us and we would gladly take them over there *points to other counter*".... BUT she had just told me that NONE of my items suit the store, and yet she was trying to get me to donate these items for no charge? I am all for donating with no benifits on my part, but NOT to a store that literally just told me that my items arent worth buying, but they will take them for free so they can make money off of it anyways. read more

I have been shopping here for years, since it was at the previous location further down 5th avenue. Overall, I love shopping at Beacon's closet. They often have a great selection, and it is just fun to shop here. I have sold clothes here several times, and began to notice a pattern. At times they bought some of my clothes, often times not, but every time I walked away and reviewed the transaction, I realized that items were missing that they did not buy from me, nor give back. I am assuming that these items were sold at the store. Maybe they just got them confused with other people's bags? I am not sure. But I feel ripped off. Also, many of the sales people present as pretty unfriendly. I still shop here because I do often find great clothes for decent prices. I don't know if I will try selling anymore...if I do I am going to keep a close tab on everything. read more

I left my bag because they were closing and they would have checked it in the morning after. No issues at all, I have been selling to them before many times so I trust them. Bag made of 30+ branded clothes in good conditions. I signed the agreement to give to charity whatever not fitting their store. As usual. BUT it turns out the day after that NONE of my 30+ pieces was fitting them and that everything went to charity. This is clearly unacceptable and they are taking advantage of us. DON'T EVER DO THAT! I walk by BC every day (several times) and every few months I give in to the urge and shop here. I've found some decent--i.e. wearable and cheap if unexciting--pieces here: JCrew jeans for $15, a new cashmere cardi for under $50--and if you can go weekdays it's not at all crowded. HOWEVER, I think I'm going to have to add it to my list of local-stores-I-boycott-when-employees-are-unforgivably-rude (Lulu's, I'm talking about you). I'd just come from buying a cupcake for my daughter at The Choc Room& I asked the girl at the front whether I could put said cupcake--carefully stored in its nice plastic clamshell--on her completely empty countertop while I looked around. She said no; I had to leave it on the shelf at the door. Now, I didn't want this temptingly perfect, uneaten, well-wrapped goodie to disappear in the hands of a hungry person entering or departing by said door, so I said I'd rather leave it at the counter...please? At which point this girl--whose age was definitely younger than mine by at least a decade--grudging said, "Fine...but NEXT TIME leave it by the door." I was so fuming I went and put back each item I'd already picked up (and was fully intending to buy) and left without another word. Rudeness is unacceptable whether you're a salesclerk at Chanel or some little thrift store, and judging by the other reviews on Yelp, I am not the first to feel this way about the staff at BC. I've been going to the Williamsberg location since 2004 and it pretty much got me through being totally broke through college being able to trade things for credit. I recently moved to park slope, so I decided to check the place out. I walked in at 8:15 with a small grocery bag of goodies to trade. on the website it states "we buy 7 days a week, without appointments, up until 1/2 hour before closing" completely not true. they refused to buy from me and said I could get on a list for tomorrow. I asked how many people were waiting and there was only one person!!! she implied with attitude that I can't skip the line (not what I was asking) and said it was "unfair" for me to expect to get my stuff looked at 15 minuets before the 8:30 cutoff. she was very patronizing and sarcastic....Ive been a loyal customer for years and I am never going back to the park slope location. I was going to ask to see a manager but then I knew the girl wouldn't take any of my stuff if I could get a manager to make her look at it. with her snobby hipster attitude I knew it would be a lost cause and I should take my treasures elsewhere. I'm super disappointed in beacons...I expected to be treated well there like in the mail Williamsberg location, not like a bum. I decided to give Beacon Closet a try despite all of the bad reviews. I thought the staff was loud and obnoxious. I have very nice items which were jeans, pair of Ugg Clogs and a 200$ Dress the employee indicated they would buy the clogs but the price is so low she is embarrassed to say the price. She encounter was weird. Another customer over heard the conversation and said they purchased the same ugg clogs from her at the 14 st location. I really hated the clothes they had. As a seller, I can see why a lot of people are confused or disappointed with the experience. I brought in a pink rabbit fur and Mongolian lamb jacket (purchased from another Beacon's location) which was rejected since they apparently "don't take modern fur." They offered to take a black dress by The Row and price it for 29$ (not give me 29, price it for 29) so I kept it. As a shopper, the selection is ok if you're willing to dig, but really hard to shop since the items are not sorted by color or size and almost every rack is too full to shop. read more

I love this place. Selling is a science at this joint. Let me give all you guys and gals a word of advice. If you sift through the racks, you can pretty much tell what they sell and buy. (I.e., vintage and new, and also but not limited to, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, J. Crew, Bloomingdales, Barneys, Madewell, Diane Von Furstenburg, Dolce and Gabbana, and also universal European boutique brands). From my personal experience, I have found great success in bringing in a smaller load of goods, like the size of a large paper bag grocer. The buyers are at times overwhelmed with the heaps of black garbage bags and suitcases of prospective merchandise and are within a particular time frame and budget to work and apply. Of all the times I have brought in goods (1, large paper bag grocer) of things that coincide with the season, quality, and brand names they are looking for, I have found the buyers to be very, very fair. It also helps to extend courtesy, cordialness, respect, and understanding when dropping off your goods. I am happy they keep their prices low,and are very fair in buying and trading. I love this place all around and will continue to support local businesess that are striving to bring goods and services to their community with authenticity, character, personality, and genuine customer service. The cool dude (cashier) at the front that wears the vintage specs, (an investor or owner (?)) w/ the ecletic tattoos is always so pleasant and appreciative of your business. read more

While New York is known for its fashion forwardness, this mediocre, overrated establishment is rampant with over priced used clothing (not quality vintage and out of style or lacking there of) and shitty customer service. The thrill of shopping in a boutique store or vintage store is simultaneously the great deals and bargains as well as the lovely shop girls. Beacons closet seems to hire poorly dressed bitches who glare and address the customers in tones of condescension and annoyance. Don't even bother trying to sell your clothes what they end up choosing (which is typically a not vintage nor a designer item) they will reimburse you with some nickels and dimes (literally) or perhaps you can get store credit and buy a cool sweater my mom found for a cheaper price at tj maxx. I used to really love this place. Notice that I just said 'used to'..... I've had hits and misses with this store, with both shopping here and with selling clothes. Sometimes I find tons of great pieces, and other times I find squat. The same can be said for when I've tried to sell clothing here. One day the buyer happens to love almost every thing that I bring in, and the next time, they take almost nothing. I swear that if the buyer assigned to looking through your stuff is in a bad mood, or doesnt like the jacket youre wearing, or doesnt like the way you walked up to the counter, they will take it out on the clothes. There is absolutely NO rhyme or reason for how they determine what is worthy enough to be hung on their hallowed racks. I swear, even when the racks are empty they will still turn down clothing that looks EXACTLY like the type of stuff they've already priced and put out. It's so ridiculous. And some of these sales girls are hateful bitches! Eye rolls, sh*t talking, condescending attitudes...you name it, I've seen it all. But the super nasty ones give the other girls a bad name-some of them are really nice. Just try to smile and, as my mother taught me, 'kill them with kindness' and you should be all right. They have absolutely NO clue on how to price vintage and designer clothing, so look hard, and dig deep and you should be able to find some amazing stuff. This is definitely the type of place where you have to look thoroughly through every single rack to find the gems. Although, I have to say, lately I have been finding less and less that I like here. Can't really tell if the good things are being snatched up faster, or maybe people just arent bringing their good clothes there anymore on account of the fact that they will hardly make a profit in the event that it's chosen to be sold. The men's section is small and pathetic. I've found a few things here over the years, but, guys, try not to get your hopes up-you're more than likely to leave empty handed and dissapointed. Weekends there are like the 6th ring of Hell. Crowded , filled with girls literally elbowing you out of the way, self righteous mommies with strollers taking up what little aisle room there is, and a 10+ person long line at both the register and fitting rooms. Avoid at all costs. Also-dont try to sell clothing there on the weekends unless you feel like waiting for over 4 hours for them to finally get to your stuff...only to have them buy 3 things out of 2 bags you brought in. The first pair of jeans that we pick up when we get in there happened to have a PERIOD STAIN on the back!! Absolutely disgusting!! I found 2 of the 3 staff here to be utterly Heinous Hipsters. The first was downright rude in directing me to leave my to go tea at the front shelf. I am sure they have to tell ALOT of people this but she treated me as if I were every single one of those people. For buying stuff their selection is hit or miss like many used clothing stores, and for selling stuff make sure to edit the clothes you bring unlike myself this time, which is a lesson learned! I was really hopeful when Beacon's Closet opened in Park Slope. The prices are very good, the clothes are good, the employees are awful! I dread going...the staff is intimidating and rude. They behave as if you should feel grateful that they let you in to their store. I have gone back several times, but am going to take my business elsewhere in the future. A new low in customer service. The owner/manager admitted that what happened is wrong but wouldn't sell me the coat. Had put a coat on hold, was told it's under my name til closing the next day. Walked in at 11am just after opening and saw it still on the hold rack, assumed they hadn't had a chance to put stuff back on the floor last night. Turns out that an employee put it on hold for someone else - obviously not someone who was actually in the store since it would have been closed by the time the coat was available - rather than put it back on the floor.
