This was my first time here, looked around and the prices are good, BUT all of the staff seem to be rude and some even look miserable, I feel bad for these people. The workers were also extremely chatty with each other! I wouldn't suggest selling your things here either, unless you need money badly, I had brought in 4 Steve Madden shoes that were never worn and Ted Baker sandals that I wore once and all of those items were pretty pricey and were bought over the summer and they only offered me $38, she said the total retail value was $98 but I wonder how they calculate that because I looked for the retail prices online before I went and they weren't low, for example one of the Steve Madden shoes I bought cost $98 and they were never worn and bought this summer and she said the store would sell them at $14.95, that's a good deal for another customer but I'm not the one to be giving them away! The girl obviously got upset when I said I didn't want to sell anything and said next time stand close by so that we don't have to do things double time... how will I know that if I've never been here? Either way it's her job to do it, so if she doesn't like it just quit. I had only heard of Beacon's Closet but had never been into any of their stores. For the 1st time last night, I had the displeasure of actually seeing and smelling what goes on in there newest location on 5th Avenue in Park Slope. The store has a musty odor and the help behind the cash register wasn't much help either (she wasn't able to multitask, poor girl). Suggestion, invest in some potpourri and better help. I do understand why the store gets so crowded on the weekends -- they do have some nice items in there, but it's not all that! When the store first opened, I thought they were giving away joints or concert tickets with every item you purchased the way people where just hanging around outside the store like it was the hottest club. I recently went to sell my Micheal Kors shoes (never worn) and a pair of diesel sneakers (worn a couple of times) and I wasn't expecting to get them for the price I wanted it to sell for. They didnt even take my Diesels because they said that it wasn't a popular brand for the customers but they did take my Kors and gave me $ 8 for cash value or $12 for store credit, they said it fit their store's "vintage" image. I was upset and looked around the to see if it was worth selling....so I spotted a nice vintage black satchel and took the store credit and purchased it. My whole experience at this Beacon's closet was OK. I went to the other larger location in Williamsburg and i would say that this one is more of a small boutique type. You can find good designer stuff for cheap. They are more into looking for vintage looking items if you want to sell ur stuff...they dont care about what designer label it is...as for the people working there, I had no prob. with them. I'm always amused by the people who are shocked or insulted that Beacon won't buy their old clothing. I shop there for unique pieces and they always deliver. So I knew if I was going to sell anything it should vintage, unique pieces. They bought everything I thought they would including the vintage scarves I tossed in for the heck of it. Also made more money than I expected. Selling clothes in New York City is very hit or miss. They are flooded with high end clothes all the time. Selling at a place like Beacon should be a "what the heck, let's give it a shot before it goes in the used clothing bin" sort of thing. If you are desperate for cash, try eBay where you get more control over the price. I for one had a good experience and I hope someone gives my old vintage coat a good home. read more

i was reluctant to even go here because i HATE the one in williamsburg. my friend was determined to show me how much better the park slope location is and she was definitely right. there is plenty of awful clothes but since the store is smaller, it's not unreasonable to look through every piece and you will definitely find some gems. i found vintage missoni wool cropped pants for $17 and what i now know as my favorite dress for $12. i was so pleased. they have some vintage, some designer, some chain store goods and some crap. a little bit of everything for everyone. read more

It's hit or miss, but it's fun to rummage through their selection & everything is affordable. You can, once in a blue moon, find some designer brands. I've sold there a couple times, too. If they decide to take your items, you can redeem for store credit (at a higher value) or cash, but they also show you what your items will retail for. While I never write Yelp reviews I just had a BC experience that compels me to write something here. Ladies, read the reviews below and asses why it is you are considering shopping at Beacon's if in fact you are torn about it. With that said, think far more carefully on the subject of selling your items because bar-none, that experience will most likely be much more stressful than the disappointment you'll feel shopping there. I've visited Beacon's in Park Slope several times and the rumors are true - the sales girls here ARE much friendlier and approachable. I was literally accosted by a W'burg BC girl when my boyfriend attempted to try on a sweater over a t-shirt because we didn't use a dressing room. It was a sweater... with buttons. Anyways, I have picked up some nice items at the Park Slope location, like the lovely Henri Bendel silk cardigan in pale purple that is still after 2 years apart of my collection. Though when it comes to selling your clothes, here are some things to take into consideration: 1. They buy seasonally... or whatever they think is seasonal. Though I bought my cardigan in the summer of 2006 and it was definitely not a summer item, I just took a bag of short sleeved and spring looking merchandise which were all rejected. 2. Just because you think it looks like something on the racks doesn't mean they'll actually buy it. Were all of my items name brand or labels? Yep. Though none of them were acceptable. 3. And ladies, this is by far the worst part, these sales girls must not have any fashion knowledge or have the sense to pick up something so accessible as a New York Mag or a copy of Nylon because the items which you do bring in that are labels you can guarantee these sales girls won't know the value of. After heaping in a bag of carefully chosen items which I felt would met their criteria, I was confident that at least one item would be chosen. While I was correct, they did chose my item, what I didn't realize is that 1 item would be the ONLY thing chosen. Yet even worse than that, that 1 item happened to be a $400 Parisian label sold only in selective boutiques in New York and the sales girls made it seem as if they did me a favor when they heaped the bag back over the counter and said, "Oh yeah, we bought the dress" and slid the tag over to me revealing $30 as the price tag soon to be affixed to my dress. Okay so they may not have heard of the label but consider the material - 100% silk! I suppose it was then not surprising when they rejected an authentic 60's men's trench coat made of 85% Cashmere and 15% Mink. To top the whole thing off, I came out with an insulting $10 and the one item I tried on in the store was a skirt that I couldn't get off because the zipper literally tore off! Save your time, save your money, and save your stress level. read more

i really had an bad experience yesterday in Beacon's and was my 1st and last time to sell my stuffs/clothings over there; if you want to sell your stuffs for a good $$, you rather sell it on ebay, 1st they have such long waiting time(4hrs) 2nd, they only take your stuffs with brands only, 3rd they gave you really low $, i sold 2 sunglasses, one Kenneth cole coat and a Steve madden boots for $27. I went to Beacon's for the first time today. I had a ton of things to get rid of (some I was sorry to see go, bye bye Marc Jacobs boots), but when you need some extra cash or to make room in your closet for some new goods it is definitely worth the trip!! They took almost everything I brought but the three pairs of high-waisted jeans, which I thought they would surely take, and I meant to ask why but I was just so excited about the amount of $$ I made that I didn't question it. I left the jeans in the "charity bin". Beware that you may have a wait time, as I did, so my roommate and I went and grabbed some brunch and returned an hour later to collect our $$. I will definitely be back not only to sell but to peruse the racks-from what I saw they had some great finds!! read more

I have found great bargains the two times I have gone here. However, it's annoying that there's no rhyme or reason to how the items are laid out in the store. I spent over 2 hours just going through the racks (trying on the clothes and paying took 15 minutes). Even if there are too many items to divide alphabetically, they can at least sort them out by size, and save shoppers a lot of time. read more

Beacon's Closet in Park Slope was on the consignment store tour when my friends who love to shop were visiting from Virginia. Each time I go there I get overwhelmed as there seems to no rhyme or reason to the store (not organized by size as most stores or by color like the Williamsburg store). Also it was so hot with no air, I about passed out. Not my favorite in an area (Brooklyn) with lots of great consignment and vintage stores. read more

Manager/owner is not people friendly and has poor customer servicing skills I have worked in retail for 10 years and I know that customer service is one of the keys of running a business without customers there will not be any business. It's a scam. Please don't support this local business. They abused the word donation and their website mention how great the store owner devote their time to run the business to recycle and donate clothes. For first time who want to sell, read carefully if it worth your time to wait minimum two hours on weekend for staff inspecting your stuff plus traveling cost. After reviewing and own experience, they would not even buy one designer brand in pristine condition clothes out from two bags of garment. If they buy one over $100-300 designer brand for $3-$10 if lucky. Subway ride $2.75 each way or Uber and you have to go back or wait to see if they buy anything. It shouldn't take that long to check the clothes. The catch is if you are not able to get back there in time then your clothes would be donated. Who knows if they really donate how much clothes? But I'm sure that they can receive a sellable condition clothes without paying a dime plus good fame and tax benefit from your clothes without pick up cost. The designer brand can sell to thrift store in other states and non designer brand to overseas. So that they have to make the process so slow and can't notify you by a call when it's done. You have to travel back to know that they don't buy any. The cash 35% plus 55% store credit that sounds too good. 10% margin plus markup price which is not right. Average $13-30/item is not profitable to survive in park slope plus so many staffs. Based on cash flow calculation plus the item on the floor is not good. The store don't care if they sell in the store because they could sell those free decent condition for $0.5-$1 in bulk to overseas. I would not buy from them even it's an expensive designer brand for low price. We don't support this illegitimate business. If people want to donate, they can do it by themselves without traveling cost, just call a church to pick up plus a tax deduction receipt up to $500 which help whoever can afford designer brand. Recently found there are once a while free exchange event in manhattan, must be able to exchange something more than $3 item. FIT has flea market, sell to those vendor $2 per designer brand. If you have 20 pieces that may worth to try. Conclusion this business operation speed and model is a scam. I hate that they keep saying donation and waste people time and traveling cost. read more

I live in the neighborhood and have brought large bags of clothes/accessories to sell probably 10 times, and they have taken about 4 items in total. One time they didn't take the same dress I bought from them previously. They receive so much clothing I get it - your stuff must be really special and somewhat hipster-y to be purchased. It's a fun store to browse, the prices a are great, and I do like their sunglasses and jewelry. Just don't bank on them purchasing your stuff. read more

If you aren't a true trifter than I wouldn't suggest Beacon's. The racks are a bit messy and not for those who are pressed for time. However, from me to all the other self-proclaimed fashion guru's out there, Beacon's is the S*!%! Seriously I've bought 2 pairs of leather doc martens here that are both in great shape, neither of which were over 30 bucks. Because they only give you like $9 for H&M, LF, TOP SHOP and ZARA brands and that doesn't even include them only giving you back 35% of what they want. My first time trying to sell to Beacon's was a wake up for me. Yeah, my stuff was clean and barely worn but they ARE picky and I had a nice conversation with the salesperson about it. And the person buying your stuff in has that one job at that point. And discussing it with you is not part of the job. You sign something that explains all that to you - so read it! They are busy for a reason! They have a limited amount of space and only want the best in current fashion which my stuff, while good enough for me, really is NOT current fashion. Gap, Old Navy, some Macy's, etc. I get it - too mainstream. So now I just buy and have found really unique stuff. And the line for the changing rooms can be daunting but the salesperson in charge keeps things moving as best she can. Really, a store chock-full of women waiting to try on their clothes? Come on ladies! We'll get our turn - it's not the store's fault! Try doing what I do: wear a long skirt and try stuff on by the rack. Strip down to ur t-shirt and try on that sweater. Works for me and I've never had a snotty reaction from anyone. I did overhear some funny stories between staff but it just adds to the shopping experience. And, finally, I've got to say that I've overheard some really nasty stuff coming out of shoppers mouths to the staff while I've been there. NY speak? Maybe, but staff doesn't react in kind so give them some respect! As a past retail worker myself I know how all those hours on your feet can be hard but dealing with the customers seems even harder. read more

Besides the girl working in the front this store is trash!! The place stinks and is crowded. It was my first time selling at this store. I brought in 5 huge boxes, 5!! They only took 4 items. The girls in the back all have stank faces and are dressed like trashy hipsters. One of the girls looking through my clothes behind me said "this is so ugly" while the one in front of me had to gesture to her that I'm standing right there. So unprofessional. I had a brand new asos trench coat I paid $120 for and she kept analyzing it, almost purposely to make it as if my stuff was not worth it so they can take it for a cheap price which she did. Totally ripped me off. They didn't take my brand new with tag $200 Rockstar jeans because "that color is hard to sell". I also had a bunch of true religion and rock&republic jeans they did not take. Very weird. They offered to take the rest of my clothes to donate,which was basically all of it, but after reading reviews I don't trust them. I also made the mistake of not asking what they took, she claims they only took 4 items. They can stick with their nasty, cheap clothing. Ripoff, Never again. read more

I love beacons closet in Union Square great selection and nice staff, everything this location does not have. For shopping, really bad selection, no style, no vintage or even nice regular garments. The buyers clearly have no taste and are very moody. For selling, THEY WONT TAKE ANYTHING, weather it is a pair of new Adidas sneakers or an old vintage dress yet thats not my biggest problem with this place. All the buyers except one of them has a F**K You attitude, really rude not nice at all. Will look at you, like your garbage or something. I asked one of the ladies where the donation goes since the donation bags where black garbage bags witch I never seen in any other beacons closet before. She said well the information is on our website. While she was trying on a jacket, wonder if those clothes really goes to donation. NEVER EVER AGAIN. i'm quite torn with this place. though i've definitely come away with some keepers, the attitude and business mode here is pretty effing obnoxious, which somewhat detracts from the typical excitement that infects my body when rifling through delicious thrift store finds. their somewhat seemingly arbitrary taste when buying clothes from sellers, and their hifalutin (sp?) attitude towards customers, is kind of snotty and not so nice. but as much as i hate on them, they tend to have some good ish. not, like, amazingly fabulous pieces,but consistenly aight stuff. you can easily walk away with an armful of adequate dresses for about $10-15/apiece, but sometimes i'd rather go to a place that requires more work but has nicer peeps, and come away with one amazing, to die for, can't live without pieces for a tad bit more money. but that's just me. beacons is like the old navy of thrift stores. dependable, affordable ,but you're not going to get anything extremely memorable. just sayin. oh and the people are kinda too cool for school. read more

If you are thinking of trying to sell your clothes, don't bother. I brought in 2 bags of great and "cool" stuff, including Burning Torch pants and in perfect condition Anthropologie sweater. They wouldn't take a thing and the reasons for this were obviously 100% BS, and made up on the spot. Undoubtedly they thought I would "donate" all of the stuff to them gratis so I brought to a nearby street corner where I hope someone would find it. The attitude thing was definitely over the top. When describing the reason for not taking a sweater one girl said "well you know, that type of bow thing is just really hard to sell" I guess she has noticed that the retro collar and bow details are exactly of the moment. She also complained about the texture being "not smooth" which is pretty dumb considering it is a boucle sweater. If you going to be a little snot you should at least know what you're taking about. Next time I'll go to the Salvation Army, which, by the way, is an excellent place to take clothes as I know of Social Service programs which take unemployed clients to the S. Army to buy clothes for job interviews. read more

I love vintage/secondhand clothes and maybe Housing Works has spoiled me or I'm going at the wrong times -- because I've been to this Beacon's Closet many times, and I haven't found a thing. Today I brought a pile of clothes to see what would happen if I brought stuff that a person like me might be interested in (something you can wear if you're older than 18 and don't or can't wear nylon shirts from the 1970s all day). From a pile of clean, pressed garments appropriate for Spring season, made of natural materials (silk, cotton) by known European designers, the only item the buyer took was the one shirt that was in the worst condition. It was a 1970s polyester shirt that I threw in the bag almost as a joke. This is what is wrong with Beacon's Closet! Granted, I am making this judgment based on my experience today, which is not entirely fair -- but my conclusion is that Beacon's Closet is alienating a good portion of its potential market by only going for "trucker chic." The presumed arbiters of Brooklyn style who are making the buying are operating under a pretty narrow scope. I mean, style is in how you put items together, people, not in wearing a shirt decorated with 15 colors! I actually overheard the buyer saying that she doesn't understand anything about how to do laundry -- any surprise?? I'm annoyed since I think it's a great business, and I suspect the managers would make a lot more money if they told the children to diversify. I mean, how many freaking nylon shirts from the 1970s do you really need? Oh, and then the cashier implied that I was shoplifting by carting by own stuff back out of the store, because I was so annoyed that I would rather donate to Housing Works. I made my first trip to Beacon's Closet this week in hopes of selling some clothes and getting some $$. Everyone was friendly who worked there and when I signed in to drop off my 3 bags of clothes the woman explained to me what they buy and went over the process with me. I decided to request an "in person" go through of my clothes so I could see what they wanted and what they would offer me. I had to wait about 15 mins and then my name was called and another woman started going through the bags with me. The main reason I am posting is to give everyone fair warning before you lug 4 huge bags of clothes there! They don't want "professional" clothes so no button down mens dress shirts, jeans are very difficult and they really only want skinny in style jeans preferably designer or vintage, no sporty or athletic clothes, no bright colors just fall/winterish items, and I had a few good fall skirts but she said they have a high volume of skirts. I think their website could be a little more informative as to what they are looking for and more specifically what they are NOT looking for. Walked out with 2 of my bags still full and I donated the 3rd, no cash for me! read more

Hiya (Waves from New Jersey)) My first experience of selling clothes at Williamsburg Beacons Closet was truly awesome. If I had listened to some of these reviews at Yelp I would have never gone. But I am glad I did. I managed to get rid of some clothes that did not fit and was able to add some fabulous new pieces to my wardrobe. The customer service was top notch. I was treated extraordinarily well. Thank you. I appreciate all the customer services representatives. Everyone was not so New York, but very approachable. The conversation was grown and sexy and the payback for my garments was most generous at $550. I would highly recommend this store as there is so much to choose from and the quality of the clothes is sterling if you know what you are looking for. Go on, take a chance. I don't know why my review was deleted but let's try posting this again, because I am so upset about this place!!!---- Awful. Seller's beware! I read all the negative reviews and I thought, "eh how bad can it be". I had so much unworn clothing and shoes, all with tags/in box that I figured it was a simple fix. I also liked that whatever they don't take they donate. Not sure I buy that they donate it, and here's why. Well I went in with garbage bags full of new clothes. Name brands. I had called before going and was told to "bring it all down!" Well, I did. The snippy girl at the "buyer's counter" seemed somewhat annoyed that I didn't want to leave my stuff for them to rummage through. It's my clothes, I am selling them to you. Why should I leave them? Call me untrusting, but how do I know you won't take something, sorry, I don't know you. So I waited about 20-30 minutes in the store to be called by a so called "buyer". I looked through the racks knowing that you get more for store credit, but I knew that wasn't the route I wanted to go shortly after looking. Some things had tags, most didn't. Styles weren't so cute. They had brands like Anne Taylor Loft, Target, and H&M. Keep this in mind, for what I will get up to soon. They finally call my name, and I started to feel somewhat optimistic when the woman took the very first pair of shoes to sell. Piperlime shoes (also keep this in mind). Next thing I know the pile begins of what they don't take. Picky doesn't even begin to describe it. PRADA wasn't good enough. They told me I could start a bag for donations, NOTHING I had was good enough for them. I had at least 100 items brand new. They took the shoes and a Joe Fresh Tank Top Dress. My donation bag was everything I brought. The woman tells me- I was fine up until this point- "I'm sorry we don't take mall clothes" Mall clothes. You have Anne Taylor Loft on your racks, and Gap, and H&M. You took my Piperlime shoes- Piperlime is owned by Gap. If you were a real buyer you'd know that! Just so you know. I smiled and tried to be nice but I was fighting back the urge as she was beginning to talk about style. The "buyer's" were all mismatched. I left my bag there, to donate, ONLY because I don't live close and wanted to get rid of it. It was never about the money, I wanted to get rid of things, and if I got something, then added bonus. The $12.00 I got wasn't even enough to cover the gas. Shortly after I left I had the notion that they probably resell what they say they donate. So guess what I'm going to go back in a few days and see if that's the case. I don't recommend it. Honestly, sell your stuff on ebay. Have a yard sale, do anything other than go there. B/c if Prada isn't good enough for their "experienced buyers" there is a problem. read more
