I have been debating whether or not to get laser hair removal for a while. Waxing isn't the most fun experience (understatement of the century), and if you have to go through the pain, may as well make it count towards something permanent right? Or semi permanent anyway. After answering my laundry list of questions, she did a test patch free or charge! I really appreciated the test since it allows the client to become familiar with the process, sensation, and possible side effects prior to purchasing anything. I told her that I wanted to wait a few days before making an appointment in case I developed a reaction for whatever reason. She completely understood and wasn't pushy at all. This place is very friendly, clean, and professional! I originally went through my treatments (packages of 6 sessions) years ago, and I had a couple sessions leftover in my package. I have dark, thick hair, and for the most part my body responded very well, so when I saw ~session 5 that things were great & I didn't need to shave anymore, I decided to "save" my 6th sessions for when I needed it. I moved away from NYC, so I come for my leftover sessions whenever I happen to be back in town... Even though it has been YEARS since I went to Beam, they still have my customer profile saved, so it has always been very convenient and no issues with confirming the status of my sessions. Andrea & the team are so incredible, and they really care about you! I was most recently in town for a wedding (only in NYC for a VERY short time), and unfortunately even though I checked every day online, the day I arrived was always fully booked. Ladies! This is the place to be if you want safe, effective Laser Hair Removal! I'm a bargain-hunter so I was shopping around on Groupon seeing what cheap deals I could get because I did not want to spend an arm and a leg. After reading some of the nightmarish reviews of some of the places of business Groupon had discounts and deals for, I decided, "hmm, maybe it's not such a good idea to be cheap when it comes to getting hair zapped from your body with lasers!!" LOL. So I chose to cut back on my online shopping, save up some money and come to Beam Laser Spa. It is pricey, but so very worth it. I first came here a year ago to get a complimentary test patch to see how the lasers would react to my body/skin. I love that they offer a free test patch, which shows they put their customer's safety first and are not money-hungry. Since it was my first time, I was super nervous. But the beautiful Andrea, took me through all of the steps and gave me all of the detailed information I would need to know regarding the treatment process, before, during, and after. The test patch was on my leg and hurt like a rubber-band snapping against your skin really hard and fast! I had my navel done and that hurt alot! It hurt like a BEE-YOTCH! But the pain only lasts for less than 15 seconds or so. While doing it, just think about the end result! It is so worth it. I have completed my six treatments and am happy with the results. I get touch ups every now and then because I like to be completely hair free when possible, lol. Keep in mind, laser hair removal kills roughly 80-90% of the hair follicles after 6 treatments. If you plan on getting laser hair removal, it's good to book way in advance. Especially if you plan on being bikini ready for the summer, it's best to get those kinds of treatments (legs, bikini, etc) in the winter because each treatment is supposed to be 6-8 weeks apart and they do not recommend sun exposure while having your treatments. The staff here is so friendly, professional, comforting, and non-judgmental!! Also, they do not accept TIPS. So the price you see is the price you pay, plus tax. I walked in and was welcomed by two lovely ladies (Andrea and Liza) with dark skin and thick thick black hair--- my people. It may sound harsh or not very "PC" but I can't imagine that those spas with blond haired or thin haired technicians- can begin to understand my hair issues! Beam did a free patch test, and that was enough to sell me- 6 months later HAIR FREE, and that is nothing to scoff at! I'm a jet black haired Italian American (see my bio photo, that's a lot of hair). I had given up bathing suits bottoms cause- I could not take the bloody massacre that would end in painful ingrown (sorry too detailed?- you should know). They are very concerned with not harming you or damaging your skin. They take detailed notes on your progress and adjust the intensity of treatments based on your results. I found Beam through its impeccable Yelp ratings, and I'm back here to pile on to the existing load of rave reviews. It is everything you hope for in a high-end laser hair removal clinic: the best state-of-the art laser (Candela GentleMax), the cleanliness of a well-run medical office combined with the relaxing girly ambience of a spa, extremely knowledgeable and skilled staff, and fair and consistent pricing. They don't do Groupons or special promos other than the 6-pack promotional price. Laser is not a cheap, but it works -- which is why people pay more for the best machines, and why you should be wary of deals that are too-good-to-be-true. More than anything other factor, you want to get treated with the best quality laser on the market, because a top-quality machine will mitigate any other variables (such as technician training, for example) and get you more consistent, long-lasting results. The Candela GentleMax is one of the best lasers out there, featuring both the Alexandrite and the Nd:Yag wavelengths (the Alexandrite is best for fair/medium skin, the Nd:Yag for women of color). It's worth it to buy the 6-pack of treatments, since you will need at least 4 sessions, and up to 6 (or more) if your hair/skin types are stubborn. But you can also buy sessions individually and see how many you need. The best candidates have fair skin with very dark coarse hair, but the laser technology has improved drastically over the past few years, and even women with darker skintones can see great results with the Nd:Yag. At the free consultation (where there isn't upselling or sales pressure), you get a free zap on a test patch, to see how you'll respond to the treatment. Based on my free zap, I went back for the full Kit & Caboodle. My technician, Amanda, is the sweetest, most knowledgeable person: you feel comfortable while getting zapped. I did research on the best lasers and procedures beforehand, comparing prices and salons in New York, and Beam came out on top. I started my laser sessions in May 2012, and I have had INCREDIBLE results as of December, about 4-5 sessions in (note: I have fair skin, dark Asian hair, so I was an ideal candidate for laser removal). By "incredible results," I mean I have not shaved at all in 2 months, which means going to yoga or anything requiring skin exposure no longer requires pre-planning. It is the most liberating change in my life. Note on pain: Laser hair removal does hurt, and more than just a "rubber band snap" in my opinion. But it's less far painful than a Brazilian wax! I think the pain on underarms is mild. The pain in the bikini area is significantly greater since there is less adipose tissue there to absorb the laser's heat. To counteract this, you can get a Rx from your dermatologist for a topical lidocaine cream. I apply it sparingly to the area to be zapped (it is toxic if absorbed through skin in large doses) about 30 minutes before the laser session. The lidocaine needs to be removed from skin with a cleansing pad, right before the laser is used. Be sure to talk to your technician to confirm this is appropriate for you, and let her know if you are using lidocaine so it can be cleansed off properly. read more

After years of waxing and other methods of hair removal I decided it was time to make the change of a more "permanent" method of hair removal. After a talk with the lady I have electrolysis treatments from, she suggested that for larger areas I go with laser hair removal and then followup with the remaining hairs with electrolysis. I researched many places (over 10) and visited about 5, but Beam definitely stood out in many ways. Their office is super clean and the staff is super friendly. As a girl who is brown with black hair, it was refreshing to see all sorts of women of color working there and completely hair free! No matter what anyone says, hair removal isn't painless and laser hair removal is certainly no exception, however they make it as comfortable as humanly possible. After my research, the deciding factor with Beam is their honest approach. The ladies at Beam don't lie or try to up-sell their services. When I mentioned I wanted certain areas lasered during my consultation, the lady told me that I would waste my money because the hair was too fine and I would see a minimal reduction of hair. They were also honest in telling me that laser treatment is still not 100% permanent (only Electrolysis is) and were realistic with the results I should expect. They also did talk about the possibility of some negative side effects with laser treatment as well so I was completely informed. This was completely unlike other places that said it would be 100% permanent, 100% safe with no negative possible side effects, and it would be 100% effective on all areas of my body (trying to up-sell me). While they're not the cheapest place out there (this is not one area to be cost conscious), with their professionalism, cleanliness, thoroughness, and immediate next day followups on how your skin is doing post treatment, is more than enough for me to highly recommend them above any other place. They even offer complimentary touch-ups which initially are needed because it takes a while for stubborn hair to go away... it's just a part of life :-). They're also great with responding back to calls or emails you send to them. Located right outside of the Columbus Circle subway station, across from the Time Warner Center. I am currently in the beginning phase of my 6-8 Brazilian package treatment with Andrea. The package price is such a steal since it was a seasonal promotion. It comes with a complimentary six-sessions for the under arm. But regardless, Beam offers complimentary touch-ups in between sessions for any treatment, which is awesome. I did some brief research on laser hair removal places because I wanted to stop waxing. No matter how quick or talented the specialists are it's still painful, and waxing doesn't always pull the hairs from it's roots. After getting some info and pricing from popular salons/spas through consultations, websites, and phone inquiries, I found Beam to offer the best overall. It's a pleasure, and sort of exciting, when I visit Andrea. She informs me on the progress, which I can see for myself but she breaks it down thoroughly. Andrea is the coolest and most gentle specialist/laser technician I ever received service from. We became friends and it's great to have a relationship like that with someone who's zapping your private areas. The procedure is quick and efficient. And the time and dedication Andrea puts into it makes me feel special. She's very careful and soothing, especially when going over a sensitive area. When she notices me getting nervous or grabbing onto the sides of the bed in anticipation, she says to me like a true friend, "It's worth it Christine..."; "It's the best thing you're doing for yourself." A quick cold compressor is released after each pulse of the laser. Its so quick that the feeling of the laser if forgotten in a mili-second. The laser is a FDA-approved machine called GentleMax which offers Alexandrite & Yag dual wave-lengths. Andrea highers or lowers the laser strengths to my comfort (the stronger the better). After each session, which is a spread of 6-8 weeks apart, she rubs aloe vera and leaves me with an individual wrapped cleansing cloth (for later use). Their website suggests getting six treatments in one area to fully eradicate hairs, though I was fully satisfied after just three treatments, so your mileage may vary. I love these ladies -- they are true professionals. The place is always clean and tidy, they are excellent at keeping a schedule and communicating with you, and, most importantly, they do a great job with the laser treatments. They are competent and well-trained, and you always feel like you're in good hands -- which is important when you're doing something as potentially hazardous as lasering. Sure it costs a good chunk of change, but lasering usually does. They are actually priced comparably to other laser centers in Manhattan, and I doubt that anyone else does it good as them. Some folks may do it cheaper, but I wouldn't trust them with my skin. If you are considering lasering, you should at least check out the ladies at Beam -- they won't disappoint. P.S. I love BEAM I did months and months of research on laser hair removal, even visiting a well known chain, and top rated locations in two states before deciding on BEAM, and I am elated with my choice. The staff at Beam is multi-cultural, which let me know that they didn't just "read" what they were telling me, but that they have expierenced it themselves and know what they are doing. I have worked with all 4 staff members and the level of service and results has never varied, they are all excellent. I have never been burned, the pain is equivalent to anything slightly uncomfortable meaning by the time my brain sends the signal to my mouth to say ouch, the discomfort has passed, and I don't use any numbing agents. If you are going to invest, and it is an investment in something permanent like laser-hair removal I suggest you go to Beam, as they are truly the best. It has been two years, and I am complete on my first site, I get maintenance twice a year, which if you add up the cost of waxing in one year is a great deal, not to mention the benefits of skin smoothness and little to no hair growth in between. She was ultra-professional, made sure I knew everything there was to know about laser hair removal (this was my first time) and kept me aware of progress throughout the process (I had three sessions). She worked quickly and efficiently - I was usually in and out within 30 minutes. She made me feel very comfortable and had an excellent "bedside manner." The office was always courteous and flexible with my schedule, even accommodating a last-minute reschedule when I was sick. People have told me that I wouldn't be able to do laser hair removal as I have fine, sandy blonde hair. Well, Beam must have a machine of the gods, because it works extremely well on me. I'm really blown away by the results. I'm also blown away by the very limited amount of pain I experienced. After I relayed my disappointment they really zapped me which resulted in some really terrible burns. I was hesitant to try another Laser Hair Removal place but I am soooooo happy I decided to try the process again. After about 5 sessions I can report that I have no more hair... All gone!!
