Let's start off by stating the obvious. Bean's barbecue is in a garage. And the garage is door is open for business all year long. They even have a little sign up front at the register "Open Through Winter." I definitely think it's a point of pride. And hey, I'd be prideful if I was cooking outdoor barbecue from a smoker all winter long. That does take some dedication. You go up to the garage and there is a large black smoker sitting out front, that is even more so blackened by the amount of soot and ash caked on the outside, with a sign on the garage above a Pig with his behind on fire. If you didn't think you were in rural Virginia, you know now. But this place is simple, and there is something to be said for simplicity of perfectly barbecued pulled pork. The sauces are pretty delicious too. The mustard bbq sauce is unapologetically mustardy, but also well balanced. The original sauce is more tangy than sweet, but compliments the smokiness of the pork quite well. Let's talk about some ups and downs of this visit. And I'll go back and forth so they balance themselves out. - When we went, there were no other options than pulled pork. They were out of ribs at the time, and Brisket is only served on Thursdays. + The pulled pork was absolutely delicious. And the amount of pulled pork you get on a sandwich for 5 bucks is almost insane. It questions the margins of this business. - They only have 3 sides and one of those sides is packaged potato chips. Coleslaw, baked beans, and chips. + The beans were very good. They have pulled pork in them, I'm 90 percent sure. I'm not the biggest fan of vinegary slaw, but if you are, this is a solid rendition. - There are lots of flies... as you're basically eating outside + You're eating outside + The cashier was very friendly + The food is VERY quick to come out + Everything is super cheap + The place is generally pretty clean for being a garage + There is parking across the street and on the street + The buns are delicious and appropriately large + Yes, I'm talking about the bread Would definitely recommend stopping by if you're in the area. read more

We were looking forward to some BBQ and we were soooooooooo disappointed with Beans BBQ. It was cold & looked like it wasn't cooked enough. It tasted disgusting. The worst BBQ we ever had. I wouldn't recommend this BBQ to anyone. The only reason I give them a 2 star review is because the Baked Beans were good. Disappointing... I discovered this place when chanced to drive by while they were open and I was hungry, so stopped for a late lunch. Got the pulled pork sandwich and it was great. Now I'm stopping anytime I'm in the area. Have learned to call ahead if I know I'll be there because they often sell out on busy days. Last weekend I got a rack of ribs in addition to the pulled pork. They were wonderful, maybe the best I've ever had. And because I was late, last customer to pick up (they sold out but I'd pre-ordered for pickup), they threw in a container of their baked beans that would otherwise have gone to waste. I'm not usually a fan of baked beans unless they are truly stellar, but I'll be ordering them too next time. It's all good! One important thing though, it's cash only. An excellent stop for the weary antiquer along the rigorous Shenandoah Valley Antiques Trail. The huge pulled pork sandwich provided ample sustenance to see me through the afternoon. It was so big I couldn't finish it. Prices are also extremely reasonable. The only reason this is 4 rather than 5 stars is the small selection of sides. Coleslaw, chips, and baked beans are your only options (and when we were there pulled pork was the only meat option). I go to bbq places as much for the sides as the meat, and I would have felt fully satisfied with some collared greens or Mac and cheese. #meatandthree! I stopped in there today - Oct 4 for the first time. Out of ribs and brisket (only on Thurs) but shame on me for showing up at 5pm. I got a BBQ pork sandwich (big helping, thanks) and sausage. I took it home. I had the sausage first with and without the mustard sauce. The sauce is fine but the sausage has great flavor without the sauce. I would 100% get the sausage again. It's the next best this side of Dead End BBQ in Knoxville, TN. Then I had the pork BBQ. Very tender and good flavor. I enjoyed it with the traditional sauce which I liked. What a cool little BBQ spot out in the country. These are the kind of hidden gems I like to try while on road trips. Unfortunately the ribs were sold out by the time we got there. I ended up getting a pull pork sandwich with a side of slaw & beans I usually tend to not order them as it's mostly a let down. Judging from the pics alone I knew I had to try it. Boy was I glad I did! It ended being the best PP sandwich I ever had, and I've had my fair share of them over the years including my own. This one was so good it left a joyful memory. The meat was juicy, piled high (how it should be) seasoned well and the soft sesame bun tied it all together. The slaw, beans and some of the sauces were too sweet for me. Aside from that they did have good flavor. I'll be back to try the ribs next time I'm out that way and hopefully the brisket. read more

Holy Smokes! This is excellent BBQ (and I say that as someone who grew up with amazing KC, Okie, and Texas-style BBQ). This is definitely worth driving out of your way to get. On Saturday afternoon we carried out the pulled pork with the original sauce (they didn't have any ribs left), with sides of beans (nice and meaty!), Route 11 chips, and slaw--all very tasty. Found the Shenandoah County Park about 18 minutes north on 11 and had a picnic before hitting Strasburg for ice cream dessert (but that's another story). read more
