The five stars are for the food, not the decor! This is down and dirty (not literally) barbecue and it is damned good. Yelped our way here and lucked out 'cause they're only open Thursday - Saturday. Stood on line a few people deep. Counter help is efficient and friendly and food comes out immediately. Today's special was brisket. I had the brisket/pork combo - about a pound of meat served with a roll, side and drink. My wife had just the brisket (1/2 lb) which also came with a roll in case you want to make a sandwich. The meat was tender, smoky and flavorful. The sauces (I think they offer four) were tasty. The slaw was on the sweet side but I like it that way. Not too much mayo. The total bill was about $21. Tables are covered in red/white checked plastic tablecloths and there are only enough chairs so the tables don't get crowded. Seemed like many customers do take out. I was hankering for some BBQ and I got my fill. I'd come back (once I digest) anytime. I'd drive out of my way to come back! it's gems like beans barbecue that remind me why i love yelp so much (not that i need much reminding, tbh). after a fun visit to the luray caverns and a meandering drive around some shenandoah mountains, we checked yelp just to see if anything special was around. .we weren't exactly hungry, but wanted to scope out our surroundings a bit. after seeing the great reviews and the drool-worthy photos of pork, we knew we had to stop in. Parking was easy enough (and free!) in the little lot on the side of bean's bbq, but there was also pretty ample street parking. doesn't look like a super busy area. had it not been for the reviews, we would've passed this place easily. walking in, the place looked like it had once been a large garage. concrete floor, a bunch of picnic tables... nothin' fancy here. walking towards the ordering counter in the back, we were told they were out of everything except pulled pork and baked beans - perfect, since that's all we were after! we chose to split 2 pulled pork sandwiches between the 4 of us... we figured it would be a "snack" to hold us over til dinner. CASH ONLY - so thankfully i had my emergency $20 with me! 2 sandwiches and a few drinks ran us only about $12 . after placing our orders, we scampered over to the small sauce bar - plenty of condiment cups with lids and 4 different sauces: the original, a mustard bbq, a vinegar sauce, and a hot sauce. all homemade and all really damn tasty. so tasty, in fact, that i promptly bought a container of the original sauce to bring home to jersey. these come in 3 sizes, ranging from about $2 to $6. trust me, you'll want some. it is that good. we sat and a few minutes later, our food was ready. they had kindly cut the sammies in half and wrapped them for each of us. the owner even brought us a side of baked beans to share, since it was our first time there. what a nice touch. so, the pulled pork: piled high AF and so ready for the sauce. holy moly, this is legit the best pulled pork i have ever had (sorry papa turney's in TN). no chunks of fat, perfectly textured and smokey meat... i seriously can't even. it was just that good. and the beans. OMG those baked beans- they'll turn any bean-hater into lover of the fart makers. super smoky sweet baked beans with bits of pork throughout... i've never had any baked beans this good. drooling just thinking about them. only complaint: it's so far away from new jersey! read more

On a recommendation from the owner of the B&B I stayed at in Edinburg, I stopped by Bean's for some BBQ one Saturday for lunch. A couple of guys set up shop in the old firehouse on S Main St. and sell pulled pork sandwiches and ribs until they run out, usually from about 9 am to 2ish. I had the pulled pork sandwich and it was easily the best one I have ever had. Meltingly tender chunks of pork piled high on a soft bun. They also had three amazing sauces to try, spicy, sweet and sour, and mustard. I mixed the sweet and sour and mustard together, and am so glad they sell containers for use at home. We didn't get any ribs because we ate ours in the car. They don't have any tables and chairs set up, so plan to either eat in your car like us or take it home. To be clear, they are only set up on Saturday, so make plans accordingly. read more

I was passing by the area and stopped by after seeing the reviews. I got the ribs that everyone was raving about and a pull pork sandwich. I am underwhelmed by the ribs, which is a bit overglazed and the flavor is a little supetficial. I much prefer the pull pork sandwich, great portion for $4 and excellent texture. The pull pork could do with a bit more flavoring actually, thoygh they give you mustard and BBQ sauces on the side that you can help yourself. Stopped by for lunch with a couple of friends on a "brisket Thursday" - I chose the ribs, which were excellent, with beans (made with a little of the pulled pork) and slaw. They also had pulled pork, which one of our party tried and they said they were great. I realize this is purely a personal taste issue, but the slaw and the beans were just a touch too sweet for my liking. After some deliberation, I went for a quarter-rack of ribs since it was only meant to be lunch, but they were so meaty I still ended up eating only half the quarter rack. They were moist, smoky, tender and delicious. They really cover all the bases with the sauces, too, ranging from both a sweet and a spicy tomato-based sauce, a mustard-based, a simple "hot", and a hot vinegar-based sauce. All were excellent and complemented the ribs perfectly. Located inside what is clearly an old garage, the surroundings are basic, but unpretentious, and the food itself - as described above - was fantastic, and a great value for money - speaking of which, it's cash only, so make sure you bring some! read more

I'm a bit of a BBQ junkie... and honestly, this is some of the best I've had in the US. I always seem to get the same things... but they're so good! I tried to get some brisket on Thursday, but they were sold out of everything and could only fill preorders. I tried again Saturday, and I am glad I did. The pork bbq sandwich was excellent and huge. What a surprise! We found this through Yelp. I'm giving 5 because it was great, and I don't want to lower their rating; but this is mostly a take out restaurant, paper plates and plastic forks, drinks in cans-definitely not a 5star white tablecloth place. Portions are huge and the food very tasty; the barbecue is tender, perfectly cooked and comes with choice of tomato, mustard or vinegar sauce. Sides were plentiful and good. The oil-cloth covered long tables added to the rural ambiance. I think this might be a converted fire-house? Never would have tried this without Yelp, grateful for the app. read more

The pulled pork barbecue sandwiches were wonderful, large and perfectly slowly cooked without too much seasoning already put on, tasty on their own but also can be flavored with one of five original sauces. The sandwiches had about twice as much pulled pork as you get at a typical barbecue place. The baked beans and homemade slaw was also excellent and the price is for everything were very good. Many people came for takeout while we were there, fewer stayed to eat. The dining room is basically an open warehouse with some picnic tables open air so you will have to fight with the flies for peace if you dine in. They cook ribs only until they run out in the same with brisket although you can call ahead and they will reserve portions for you. Only open Thursday through Saturday. Sometimes they have sausage but not much else on the menu besides chips and soda. read more

Best BBQ ever! Plan to grab and go though there are a few tables, the flies will run you out of there. It is an open restaurant so no way to keep the flies from attacking you while you eat. Great ribs but plan to preorder on your way into town. Brisket day is only Thursday and will sell out so plan to preorder that too! The BBQ sandwiches are huge and delicious. I have been eating lunch at Beans since he opened. The only thing I have ever had is the pulled pork sandwich. I have eaten there dozens of times. He's pork is the perfect tenderness. Tender but not mushy. I switch between his normal sauce and his vinegar based type. Both sauces are excellent. Service is quick and polite. I have eaten pulled pork all over the country and this is one of my top 5. The building looks like an old garage and the inside matches the outside appearance. Absolutely delicious! Had pulled pork BBQ sandwich which was massive... I mean this thing was pilled HIGH with porky goodness on a good bun. I tried original and vinegar sauce - both were delicious. Also had baked beans which were also delicious - perfect blend of sweet and smokey with just a touch of heat and BBQ meat added. Yum! My sandwich was so big I could have easily made 2 meals off of it. We ate in and watched alot of people come by for take out. No wonder they sell out fast! They say to keep an eye out for where the locals eat because that's where the good food is and that's exactly what you have here. I'll definitely be back and hope to try the brisket. I am reluctant to write this review since it may make it even more difficult to get Bean's ribs if they become more popular. I am a regular visitor to the area and my travels take me all over the US where I try the local BBQ. I had twice before attempted to buy ribs at Bean's but I had failed to call in advance to reserve them. The pulled pork was extremely good but it gave no indications as to how remarkable the ribs would be. This time I called ahead and picked up a rack to share with my wife. I am all about the flavor, she is all about the consistency and is very hard to please. These ribs were extremely meaty, smoked perfectly but tender and juicy too! A very rare combination. Though we are both a fan of Memphis style "dry ribs" where you add your own sauce, the sauce that they put on the ribs for take-out was great. These ribs were absolutely among the very best I have ever tasted. The best I have had in Memphis, Kansas City and Chicago have a hard time coming close. One disclaimer: I have had these ribs only once. Perhaps the most difficult thing to achieve in BBQ is consistency and it is very hard to find. I will need to retry the ribs at least another two times to see if this could be the first BBQ place to win my "Triple Crown" where they serve great ribs 3 times in a row. From the other reviews, it looks like they have a shot at it. I asked the owner why what they do when they are not open (they are only open 3 days per week). He said it takes them 3 days to prep and cook. Everything is made by hand from fresh ingredients. All the meat is carefully trimmed. So perhaps taking the time to do all of this is what is producing such great results. As a place to dine in, this place is about as bare-bones as you can get but you won't mind after your first bite. If I recall they used to be open only two days per week but are now open three. On Thursday's they now feature brisket. I will have to try that next so it may be a while before I can update this review to tell you how consistent they are. In the meantime try it yourself but call in the day before to reserve your ribs. read more
