Ok I'm serious when I say this is a hidden gem. The patio is amazing! A huge oak tree in the middle that's beautiful. Dog & kid friendly. Everything was clean and we heard music playing a few doors down. (We went on a Saturday afternoon my toddler and I.) The suggestions of food, good cold beer and overall vibe were great. I am a huge fan and walking salesperson for this restaurant. I order the veggie breakfast burrito at least once a week. Today I bought one and at first bite I knew something was wrong. They changed the recipe and it was DREADFUL. It tasted like a potato and rubber band burrito. In stead of a lovely curry cauliflower, carrots, onions, farro and egg mix it was potatoes #1 followed by a thin carrot strip slaw (rubber bands) a little egg. We've stopped in for a visit on the way to Carmel Valley Village twice now. Bear + Flag is a small roadside cafe and wine shop located in the same area as Wagon Wheel and Baja Cantina. It's cute with indoor and outdoor seating. Peruse the menu, order at the counter and they will bring your food/drinks to you. Parking can be a bit of an issue as it gets busy, but we were lucky enough to find a space both times. Unfortunately, our first and second visits were vastly different with regard to food and service. If I based my review on the first visit, it would have been a definitive 5 stars. We were warmly greeted by Chef Todd, who took our order and even offered tastes of wine so we could ensure what we ordered was to our liking. I ended up ordering the tri-tip sandwich; oak smoked tri-tip with smoked onions, mayonnaise and roadside BBQ sauce all on a garlic steak roll. I also added the smoked jalapeno which was decidedly hot so I would not recommend if you are sensitive to heat. The sandwich was huge, delicious and filling. Great visit! We noticed a bit late that they had a Mac & Cheese on the menu and asked Chef Todd about it before we left. He described as smoked with poblano chile and 3 cheeses - highly recommended trying it. Since the sandwiches are so huge, my husband and I had already decided on our next visit we would try the Baker's Bacon BLT and that delicious sounding Mac and Cheese and just split it all. Chef Todd was not to be found on our second visit. However, the young people working the counter were friendly although not as knowledgeable or helpful in selecting a wine (they had all changed and were predominantly white). We placed our order for the BLT and Mac and Cheese only to be told they had run out of bacon and the Mac and Cheese had been taken off the menu, replaced by Macaroni Salad (BOO!). We stepped back to decide what to order since our two choices were unavailable. I decided on the Muther Clucker (Fried Chicken Sandwich) while Marty chose a special (Bratwurst Sandwich). The bratwurst was very meaty....so much so it seemed dry. There was too much bread in the sandwich. The fried chicken was inconsistently cooked. Some parts were crispy and moist while the majority was thick and dry. The pickles and tomato were placed on the bottom of the bun so the chicken breast just slipped right off. We were disappointed especially since these sandwiches, a beer and glass of wine were nearly $60 with the 20% tip we included. I don't blame the young kids running the restaurant today, but I think more attention needs to be placed on making sure the quality of food remains consistent with each visit and regardless of who is there. It will be awhile before we visit again. read more

Place conveniently located right off the main road on the way to some of the wineries (which is why we chose it for a quick bite beforehand). They have indoor and outdoor seating. You order at the front and pay and they give you a flag and bring your food to you. They are more known for their bbq items. I got the 18 hr smoked brisket sandwhich and fried pickles. The sandwich doesn't come with any sides or even sauces. It would've been nice to have some chips or fries with it. As for the bbq,honestly it wasn't too great. Felt like the brisket was more fatty and oily than anything. The juices or oil soaked up the sandwhich bread, which made it soggy and crumbly and overall not able to hold anything together. I ended up having to go in with my hands to pick up everything that fell. Prices are honestly too high for what you are getting for the quality and quantity. They have a separate b fast and then lunch menu that starts at 11:30 I believe. Bathrooms were located acouple doors down and you need to ask for a key. Service was just alright. It seemed like he just wanted to move through to the next customer and get the day over with. Probably wouldn't return to try other stuff. read more

Some of the best breakfast burritos in all of Monterey county!!! We had a bacon and a brisket and the brisket was hands down the winner. Although I promised to split half and half I made sure to eat 52% of it just to get a little extra... Sorry not sorry!! The place was so great we went before our hike and then after. The tri tip sandwich is the way to go and since the burrito filled us up pretty good we split the sandwich and a bag of chips. Ok so..... I love a BLT. Especially in the south with fried green tomatoes . I was told Bear+Flag's BLT is one of the best. I was kinda skeptical because you always hear that kind of thing. Oh man. Was expecting something amazing for the price- very good and decent size but not earth shattering. Still solid sandwiches- fresh sour roll, piled high with meat and cheese. We ordered the herb roasted Turkey (added avocado) and the paisano (mortadella, prosciutto, coppa, provolone, salami). For sides we ordered the Mac salad (Aleppo peppers dressing and peppercini - despite being creamy it had a tart vinegar taste) , The potato salad (red onion dill and olives- great but wish I could have tasted olives more!) This place was so good!! Super simple set up inside- order at the counter, to sit, and food comes out fairly quick. I had the BLT and it was truly the best I've ever had. Add the avocado- just do the whole thing bc it's just worth it. Soooo good. The thick cut bacon had a tiny bit of sweetness to it, and was super hot and fresh. Sourdough bread was also delicious. My husband had the tri tip sandwich and it was delicious!! I only got one bite - being from the central coast he's pretty picky about his tri tip and this was a winner. Hmmm, I'm not sure what to make of my first experience at Bear + Flag. With 4.5 stars on Yelp, it should have been a sure thing...but it wasn't. We arrived at 12 noon, prime time lunch hour. It is a counter order restaurant so we were 5 deep and it looks like they were receiving online orders. My wife and I were prepared for a wait as we were excited to try this 'casual with high quality food and beverage' cafe/deli. With one person working the counter, it was very slow queuing. The young gal who took our order was apologetic and very friendly. However, I'm used to successfully ran businesses figuring out these sort of challenges. Maybe some one called in sick. So Let's move on. Food: My wife and I ordered the mother clucker chicken sandwich, brisket sandwich, and fried pickles. The brisket in the sandwich was tender, smoky and delicious. The bun was soggy with the slaw (I suspect) and exploded after my first bite. The fried chicken in the mother clucker was very small and balled up into the size of a tennis ball. You only got 3 bites of chicken with this pretty small bun. Lastly, the fried pickles. We couldn't wait. Unfortunately, they got forgotten and hammered by too much time in the fryer. So the coating was super hard and shattered when you took your 1st bite to only reveal a mushy greasy dill pickle spear. Ohhh, so disappointed. Why didn't someone within the crew recognize the overdone frickles prior to serving? So why 2 stars and not 1? 2 stars were the given for the quality smoked brisket and the cute outdoor seating area they created with picnic tables and a beautiful oak shade tree. If I were to go back, I would order a 1/2 pound of smoked brisket and drink beer or wine from their ample selection. read more

We have a home in Carmel and decided to venture off to somewhere "out of town," so we went to Bear & Flag Roadside. The folks who work there were really pleasant and helpful. It's a very casual place (grab your drinks first, then order and seat yourself) which is 100% fine. When the food came, we were SHOCKED at the portion sizes, and NOT in a good way! As others on Yelp have said (wish we'd read them first), the "Starter" of fries ($7.00) consisted of about 15 fries in a paper bag. I don't think we have ever paid that much for 15 fries, especially in a casual roadside place. The "large" chicken Cobb salads tasted good, but they were extremely skimpy on the proteins (and $20 each) - about 2 oz of broiled (?) chicken, about a tablespoon of bacon, maybe a tablespoon of cheese, one egg, a few slices of radishes, and some tomatoes. No avocado, not a lot of lettuce (maybe 2 cups?), and again, for $20, we expected a lot more. I went up to the counter and said I was disappointed by the quantity of fries, and, while polite, the crew basically said "Thanks for sharing." Seriously? Fries have to be one of the least expensive items a restaurant purchases, so if they had wanted to get a great review, and/or a repeat customer, they should have done something more. Definitely a missed opportunity for them. Bottom line: everything is costly these days, but this place charges like the Mission Ranch or one of the spots on Ocean Avenue, and does not deliver a product comparable to those places. We don't have an issue with paying premium prices in a resort town, but we fail to see the VALUE at this place. read more

This is a fun little roadside stop in beautiful Carmel Valley. After seeing a little online, I decided to drive the 5 minutes past the Carmel shopping area to get here. We arrived and it was a peaceful Saturday morning. The person in front of us in line bought 3 lbs of tri-tip to go and then we had the place to ourselves. I was sad to see that the burritos were premade and ready to grab and go because I have an allergy to peppers. But thankfully before we left the proprietor offered to have the chef make a fresh one with no peppers for me. He was also bilingual and could help my wife choose her burrito in Spanish. The burrito came out in about 5 minutes and it was very good. I do think I'd choose the bacon over the brisket next time, as my wife's tocino was muy bien! She also said that the peppers and onions gave it a depth of flavor that she really enjoyed. Drive out and check this place out. Note: They do have coffee, but not an espresso stand. read more

Great burgers. Decided to have potato chips instead of French fries. Offered a brand "Hawaiian Chip Company" which turns out are not made in Hawaii at all. The BBQ chips were terrible. Turned out to have more sugar than salt. Purchased another bag for $4.?? called "Original" and they were worse. Employee (very nice) came out and I explained that we just purchased both bags and could we exchange one for the other brand of potato chip they also carry. Holy Smokes! This place is amazing! This little place is producing some of the best sandwiches in Nor Cal. I am a fan of the Oakville Grocery in Napa, but this roadside deli crushes them. You can tell that the head chef is a BBQ artisan. We had the tri-tip, turkey sandwich and brisket. All we're out of this world but the tri- tip Sandwich was by far the best sandwich I have ever had. Got the signature burger. Good burger. I personally prefer pickle slices to be round but the burger had pickle slivers so it was not an ideal pickle to burger ratio for me. Other than that patties were lovely with crisp edges but still juicy. Tasty burger sauce that was sweet and tangy and a good compliment. Service was polite and prompt.
