The first come first serve sites were almost all empty Sunday-Wednesday mid July when I visited. The creek is beautiful and there are lots of good swimming spots. We stayed with friends in a group site and several single nearby sites. There was plenty of space and fallen trees and meadows for our kids to explore! The bad: Idk why but checkout and checkin are both at 2pm, so the sites aren't being cleaned fully between uses. There was a bit of trash at ours and we almost overlapped with the group there before us. The dumpsters were full the entire time we were there. So many yellow jackets and mosquitos, but that's summer in California near the water for you. The worst, there were several bears that made the rounds scavenging every night. We heard them sniffing around tents, banging around coolers, and people generally letting off foghorns and screaming and dogs barking all night long. The campsite is not equipped for bears. The hosts are doing their best, but this is their first summer with this problem, and they aren't receiving support from fish and wildlife. There are no bear boxes at the campsites and very little signage anywhere alerting people to store all their containers and food out of reach at night. People are also not helping. We talked to one family with their food out and said to pack it up as there were bears out the night before. They said they had been coming to the campground for years and never seen a bear. They didn't pack up their food at night and the bears got it all, and they had to leave the next day. The stupidity was astounding. Overall, I would recommend it except for the bears! Hopefully the government steps up to give the host more support before something serious happens!

All spots are on a steep incline. Majority of park occupied by full time campers living. A lot of marijuana smell and odd people coming out of campers at night. RV spots very narrow so no space to set up unless you do not mind picnic table over other rv spot sewer hose. No service at all so make sure you bring everything you need. The pool was over occupied which is probably due to complete lack of space or sitting for anyone. The putt putt golf was basically dirt. E-bikes very dangerous unless you are a pro because of the steep slopes. No paths for walking. I'd recommend trying anything else first. The drive is pretty long and winding so really not worth the drive.

First of all it's $75 a night for sites that are on level, broken concrete…read morewhen you're trying to pull your rig through to park they have dead tree branches that are that scrape your RV and the branches on the tree need to be trimmed and they scrape and scratch your RV. It's absolutely not a resort. They charge you $19 to dump. They charge you $10 a night for a dog. The camp host doesn't even know his own rules. He told my fellow camper he couldn't turn his generator on until 9 AM and the paperwork says 8 AM. It is so dusty. It's like baby powder coming in and out of your rig they don't water anything down so it just floats through the air. The lady at the check-in is so unfriendly she should find another job the ladies in the restaurant and the bar were wonderful. That was the only good thing about this place. Do not stay there with your rig, but definitely have lunch or dinner.

Also if you are at lot 20/21 you are RIGHT by the entry for off roading people who are on the way to do the rubicon trail. On our camping experience here they would make loud noise starting at 11pm- 1 am so it was not quiet by any means and felt like the cars were right next to the tent. Loon Lake? More like ANT Lake!…read more Went to this campground with my husband last weekend. I would highlight how pretty the place is, but unfortunately the campground design had many flaws. First, the elevation was pretty high, so right away, we were noticeably winded even after the shortest walk. They should really consider lowering the campground. Then, we went to sit on the lakeshore, and what did we see?? Not a single loon, but THOUSANDS of ants. Less than 5 minutes after I laid my towel down, it was covered in ants. Turns out there were several ant hills....ON THE BEACH. This is an unacceptable flaw in design. I would suggest the camp hosts or Forest Service relocate the ant hills, so that people can actually enjoy the shore. Just as we were settling down later in the evening and trying to sleep, I heard someone making a God awful owl hooting noise, from high up in the trees. It was very obnoxious. And I know it wasn't an actual owl because birds aren't real. All in all, it's a pretty place but I'd recommend visiting a campground that values comfort and caters to your needs. Another great day at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. I was first into park besides those there for…read morecamping. Clean restrooms, clean trails, impeccable grounds and views, ample parking for me but when I was done hiking the spaces were full. Hiked to the viewpoint then walked the numbered trees loop. Saw bear, dear and likely raccoon tracks. Plus saw proof that "yes" a bear does poop in the woods. Lots of woodpeckers, chipmunks, ground squirrels, jays and junco birds, The trees are so large, incredible sequoias. Many of the huge downed trees have been preserved, propped up and or fenced. I hiked about 4 miles. It was a great day.

They answered all of my questions, made the check-in process easy, and genuinely made me feel welcome. Aryan especially went above and beyond. Great customer service can be hard to find these days, and he deserves to be recognized for how kind, professional, and helpful he was. Madi was just as wonderful--both of them really set the tone for a great camping trip. Thank you both for making my visit such a positive experience. Employees like Aryan and Madi are a huge asset to Lake Camanche, and I hope they get the recognition they deserve. I'll definitely be back!

This place has become…read moreoverwhelmed with rules and restrictions, and the rangers seem more focused on policing campers than creating a welcoming experience. I used to come here every year, but after this trip, we'll never be back. Don't try to sneak alcohol, they do check and they will walk around your campsite every 10 mins. The rangers constantly patrol campsites and frequently show up unannounced, making it hard to enjoy your stay. We were kicked out of our campsite because they found a beer on our table. (Yes, we were aware no alcohol, but cmon we're camping)! Then we were told to be out by 8:00 AM the next morning. We were already packed up and actively loading our vehicle when a ranger approached us at 8:01 AM and immediately accused us of trespassing. Instead of handling the situation professionally, he told us to "hurry up and pack your stuff, and get the fuck out" and stop "lollygagging." We were literally in the process of leaving. These american rangers were on a power trip, super entitled, thinking they're above the law and talking to us like we were animals, if not worse. So in other words, they must really love their jobs, or they're unhappy with their lives. The entire experience felt unnecessarily hostile and aggressive. Being nice will go a long way. We were super nice and respectful and didn't argue back. Wish we got the same energy back. There are plenty of other campgrounds where visitors are treated with respect.

I have been going to this campground for over 50 yrs, of course there weren't hosts back then, but they could be a bit more friendly. Last year,especially, they were great. Everyone was very friendly. The campsite is very level and perfect for riding bikes. The bathrooms have real toilets and showers and we're pretty clean. We loved our stay! The only weird thing is that we purchased a parking pass for the parking lot to be closer to the lake since we had kayaks to bring in. The lady that sold us the pass told us that she sells unlimited passes, despite there only being about 20 spots. We asked if that meant that even though we purchase a spot, does that mean there's a possibility of not getting a spot? And she said yes! I don't understand this method of selling parking passes. They should find a better way otherwise they are just taking peoples money for no reason... we bought a pass at 7:30 am and went up to the lot at 9am and we got one of the last spots. That's a big bummer for anyone else buying a pass.
