Mokolumne Peak on Munson Meadows trail

I was recently doing some packing into the Mokolumne Wildness out of Plasses. I came into camp early evening. Somehow, while unloading my mules and getting them situated, I must have bumped the door lock on my door, so when we had exited the rig we were locked out, and my cell phone, wallet and food were locked in the truck. I walked the distance from our camp to the office, which was closed. Not sure how to proceed, a couple of workers, Amanda and Alex pulled up in a cart with a friendly greeting asking how they could help. No sooner had I explained my problem, and they had a working cell phone in my hand, connecting me with a locksmith. We were back in my truck in a little over an hour. Plasses staff saved my bacon. Thanks so much for the courtesy

Plasse's Resort is full of activities both on and off Silver Lake. Hiking, biking, boat, kayak rentals, camping and a great restaurant with very reasonable pricing. Some of the best views around.

Silver Lake from the store at Plasse's Resort

We had high hopes for tent camping here. The reviews we read were great... In reality everything is rundown and not maintained. The toilets (port a potties) in the campground were filled to the seats...splashing up on oneself involved... I took to walking to the store everytime I needed to use the facility. The women's toilet was out of order the whole time we were their and the men's actual toilet was just set on concrete...beware of tipping over! On the last day I discovered the nicest toilet in the shower room....however no mirror in there for after showers and the window was covered in an old plastic tablecloth to stop people from peeking in. We also noted that each site had relatively new picnic tables, but most of them were bent out if shape and wobbly. The generator at the store ran 24/7, so no quiet hour at this campground and don't expect the store to have what you forgot. It's more a gift shop. They also advertise a restaurant and bar but it was closed during our whole time camping there. Silver lake is BEAUTIFUL and the hikes are fantastic. We will skip Plasse's next time and use the newly renovated, beautiful campgrounds at the north end of the lake. However, do take the time for a sunset stroll here...nice view.

This pains me. Plasse's Resort is in a stunningly beautiful location overlooking Silver Lake at the peak of the Sierras. There's a ton of activities, cabins and a number of campsites. With all that in mind, I guess my biggest disappointment is that I wanted to like it so much more than I did. We were fortunate enough to grab their last remaining campsite after a fire in Northern CA forced us to change our camping plans. In general, the campgrounds leave a lot to be desired. The spaces were small and dusty, there were tons of horses and their crap, people shooting around camp on motorized quads at all hours and trash strewn all throughout the adjacent creek. Worst of all was the noise. I got up twice in the middle of the night to tell neighboring camps to shut up, since no one seems to obey the 10 pm noise curfew and there is zero enforcement on behalf of the resort. There was an especially loud group of three RVs with who-knows-how-many kids that made noise late into the night. They were situated right next to the groundskeepers RV but nothing was said to them. Right away we learned that this is a place ideal for RV campers, not tent campers. I'd guess that 90% of the spaces were RV occupied, which means big vehicles, generators running and generally a whole different camping aesthetic than in a tent. In other words, if you're a tent camper, I suggest looking elsewhere. The front office lady was nice in a sort of take-no-bullshit kind of way. I give my biggest props to the groundskeeper, whose name I unfortunately forgot. He was an older gentleman who was nice and showed us to our campground but also seemed like the only one monitoring the entire resort and a little overwhelmed by that. On our last full day we rented kayaks, which was by far our most enjoyable activity. The lake was clear and calm, the Sierras offered a priceless view. We shored up halfway across the lake, swam and ate lunch. Nevertheless, even this process was cumbersome. You need to go to the office to rent your gear (paddles, life jackets, etc.) then carry it half a mile down to the water, which isn't an easy thing to do when you factor in a kid and personal gear. Why not have the rental station down by the boats? Like a lot of things here, it left me questioning the management of this place.

We found Plasse's through the recommendation of several friends. It definitely did not disappoint. Check in was easy and our site was ready early. The whole camp was extremely clean. Our site was close to the water so we were able to utilize the lake during our stay. We also loved hiking around. One more important highlight- the bathrooms were extremely clean. Which is always a plus! We can't wait to visit again.

Got this gem of a note from management ther was sent directly to me

Do they sell alcohol at the store?

Is this place accessible in the winter?

Not unless you have a snowmobile. The road is gated off in October and trespassing usually ends up getting a couple loads of buckshot fired at you for your trouble.

The first come first serve sites were almost all empty Sunday-Wednesday mid July when I visited. The creek is beautiful and there are lots of good swimming spots. We stayed with friends in a group site and several single nearby sites. There was plenty of space and fallen trees and meadows for our kids to explore! The bad: Idk why but checkout and checkin are both at 2pm, so the sites aren't being cleaned fully between uses. There was a bit of trash at ours and we almost overlapped with the group there before us. The dumpsters were full the entire time we were there. So many yellow jackets and mosquitos, but that's summer in California near the water for you. The worst, there were several bears that made the rounds scavenging every night. We heard them sniffing around tents, banging around coolers, and people generally letting off foghorns and screaming and dogs barking all night long. The campsite is not equipped for bears. The hosts are doing their best, but this is their first summer with this problem, and they aren't receiving support from fish and wildlife. There are no bear boxes at the campsites and very little signage anywhere alerting people to store all their containers and food out of reach at night. People are also not helping. We talked to one family with their food out and said to pack it up as there were bears out the night before. They said they had been coming to the campground for years and never seen a bear. They didn't pack up their food at night and the bears got it all, and they had to leave the next day. The stupidity was astounding. Overall, I would recommend it except for the bears! Hopefully the government steps up to give the host more support before something serious happens!

Tables and water spigots to rinse off dishes and feet and little kids too were provided at our site, very helpful. We also had our own small amphitheatre/firepit with lots of benches to sit around it I would guess about 30 people would be comfortable sitting around it. Although no fires were allowed due to Californians most recent droughts and wildfires. REMEMBER; Non potable water comes from the spigots. All drinking and cooking water must be brought in... Non potable means you can't drink it. Vault toliets- That means= Outhouse! Bigger and nicer than most but it still doesn't flush! Firepits are there, but in drought conditions we pretended they weren't there. We had fire rings for s'mores & such. Each different campsites comes with an Attendant to report problems, they pick up garbage & replace TP in those vaults. Basically the manager at each campsite to reduce issues. Ours was a really cool guy named Steve. The lake itself is gorgeous, fairly empty and looks a lot like Tahoe with the humungous boulders. While we were there the boat launches were a nightmare due to the low water levels in the lake. Although the lake was still absolutely beautiful for swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, fishing and a million other activities you can think of. Also the stargazing is amazing the night skies are beyond stunning the elevation is high enough and its dark enough to really enjoy that too! It is a very beautiful and tranquil campground. It is called "group" because you are allowed more people but parking is limited at each campsite and nearby parking lots are fairly close. You could walk around and still not see or hear other people at nearby sites... Very tranquil.

Within 10 minutes of our arrival, we were approached and warned about playing music, even though it was very low and only audible to those at our site. It turns out there are now surveillance cameras and speakers at every campsite, and staff are actively listening in to ensure no music is being played. This level of monitoring felt invasive and unnecessary. We were harassed repeatedly throughout our short stay--not just about the quiet music, but also about a service dog that belonged to our friend, a military veteran. Despite the website clearly stating that pets are welcome, we were approached multiple times and questioned about the dog in a way that felt discriminatory and disrespectful. Our group included a handicapped friend and a retired veteran, both of whom were deeply upset by how we were treated. After all the years and money we've spent here, we were shocked by the lack of respect and hospitality. Thankfully, Don Pedro Campgrounds welcomed us without a reservation and turned our ruined trip into a positive experience. We will not be returning to River Ranch and strongly recommend choosing Don Pedro instead. It offers a far more welcoming and respectful camping environment. 10 out of 10 times, Don Pedro is the better choice. 0 stars is what they deserve but isn't an option!

Then, we went to sit on the lakeshore, and what did we see?? Not a single loon, but THOUSANDS of ants. Less than 5 minutes after I laid my towel down, it was covered in ants. Turns out there were several ant hills....ON THE BEACH. This is an unacceptable flaw in design. I would suggest the camp hosts or Forest Service relocate the ant hills, so that people can actually enjoy the shore. Just as we were settling down later in the evening and trying to sleep, I heard someone making a God awful owl hooting noise, from high up in the trees. It was very obnoxious. And I know it wasn't an actual owl because birds aren't real. All in all, it's a pretty place but I'd recommend visiting a campground that values comfort and caters to your needs.
