This is a nice campground. It's within easy walking distance of Silver Lake. There are two loops: the West and the East loop. Toilet facilities consist of pairs of pit toilets. The campground seems well-maintained with a friendly compost selling firewood. All of the campgrounds have fire pits and a picnic table. The size of each campsite is variable. Some are quite large with plenty of flat campsite space. Each campsite has space for two cars to park. (Extra vehicles have to park elsewhere, and there's an additional fee.) Camping here gives you an excellent base for some awesome local hiking trails. read more

Always an enjoyable camping experience, well maintained by EID all the way down to the outhouses and hospitality. Firewood is available along with Tent and Trailer sites. WARNING to hikers trekking to the Potholes, you will not have access via the campground and must park along highway and use trail head across from Silver Lake. read more

My friends and I have camped here a few times over the years - usually for at least 2 or 3 nights. If we can arrange it, one of us tries to get in earlier to snag a good spot. And by good, I mean close to the water and within 2 or 3 spots from the nearest toilets (hey, we're getting old). We have also learned to look at spots that offer some shade - without it, it's easy to fry! We've been lucky and have never had bad neighbors (noisy, tons of kids, drunks, etc.) Dog-friendly. Great hikes nearby. The lake is fun for splashing in to cool off. Just for fun, we'd go to the lodge for ice cream. read more

I can't stop thinking about this place ever since our visit. Great place to unplug and unwind from modern life. Chill, clean and serene. When we went it was not overly crowded, we rented kayaks from the shop and the water was a perfect temperature. A great escape from the valley heat. We ate lunch at the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed our meal. It's worth the drive. Wish I was there right now! read more

I grew up in Placerville and visited Silver Lake as a child up until my adult life now. I used to haul my aluminum fishing boat up to the lake from my cabin in Grizzly Flats. I have caught many 12-16" trout here each time I went fishing here. German brown and rainbows. I have camped here many times as well. They have a store and fishing supplies, plus if you like you can rent small aluminum fishing boats with 25 HP motors. This is a gorgeous little lake near Lake Tahoe on HWY 88. I recommend camping at Silver Lake. read more

Spent 2 nights (aMonday & Tuesday) at this campground. We stayed at site #13 and it was lively. Lots of shade during the day, near the restrooms but not right next to them. The trail to the lake was right next to our site - I could see this possibly getting annoying on a busy weekend but was fine while we were there. The trail leads thru the forest next to a cute little pond. The campground and restrooms were well kept & clean. The Kit Carson lodge is a short walk away so we could grab ice & ice cream. Silver lake is gorgeous. We did have to drive out of the campground to launch our kayaks in the lake but that was a minor inconvenience. Would definitely return. read more

Silver Lake is a beautiful place. This trip was my four year old's first time, and she kept repeating "what a beautiful view, mama! I just love the beautiful view!" We camped in a space toward the back of the loop, the second to last week of the campground's season. We had neighbors throughout, but the spaces are well spaced, so you never feel right on top of each other. It's a very dusty area, so if you are bringing kids, be prepared to wash them down with a wash cloth before bed! Of course, kids LOVE the fine, soft dirt, it makes for excellent play! Yellow jackets call the place home, so we did most of our meal eating in the trailer. But that's not the responsibility of anyone, we are in nature's house, so we deal with it. But why not five five stars? Because all the dumpsters were padlocked closed, save the one closest to the highway. In a campground with bear lockers, obviously you can't leave your trash out overnight. But I guess that management didn't want to pay to have all their dumpsters emptied, so they padlocked them all. My parents are seniors and therefore drove our trash to the front of the campground, but that's inconvenient when you are getting settled for bed and realize that you didn't take out the trash... so you wind up storing your trash in the bear locker with your food. It would have been nice to have a little service where they used their golf carts to drive by once at night and pick up anything you need out of camp, or at least notify you that dumpsters are locked. I'm sure this campground is on our list of places to visit again. Maybe next time they'll let us dump our trash a little closer to home. read more

Ok, I have a mixed review here. This site is very nice, spaced out, close to the lake, river and resort. No showers, with outhouse toilets that are kept clean and stocked. I was very happy with this campground for the majority of our visit (2 adults and 2 young children). Roads are not too steep for kids riding bikes and the substitute hosts where kind enough to put up a "children at play" sign for our little ones biking on the road. Apparently most our visit was during the few days that the camp hosts have off each week. The host substitutes & the back host were very nice and helpful, but the day the main/front hosts returned (Cecil and Linda Gore) they literally came straight over & harassed us to an excessive point in front of our children, telling us to pack up and leave & even threatening to call the police (of which we kindly requested they follow through on considering the level of harassment), all of which was within the first few minutes of approaching us & without hearing the explanation of what was an easily understood misunderstanding. The POLICE arrived and kindly heard the explanation & agreed that there was no reason for their action. The police even informed us that in addition to the reason they told us to leave, the hosts were claiming we had stolen from one campsite and robbed a woman from another site (an assumption of hosts whom had been gone, and not based on talking to ANYONE involved)!! Unfortunately the police had to go and wake 2 other campsites (police arrived late) to confirm that we were telling the truth, that we had in fact been very helpful to the woman we supposedly robbed & were viewed favorably by all campers. This is something the hosts could have confirmed before campers were asleep, cops were called and certainly before coming over to harass us in the first place. I even tried to provide the hosts with the site info to be able to confirm things with others involved, but they did not bother, they just judged us & treated us with utter disrespect. In short they spoiled our trip, and that of many other campers whom had expressed similar negative interactions with them unrelated to ours. Campers coming for generations mentioned that previous hosts have always been so very kind and accommodating, but that the new hosts were very harsh to interact with. I even heard stories of them harassing other campers & arguing with the back host that same day, so I feel assured my experience is not isolated. I absolutely loved my time at this site prior to encountering the hosts, but I could not in my right mind recommend it to campers, particularly families looking for a relaxed and positive experience, at least not until those hosts are removed from their post. Luckily the other camper involved, a kind woman named Wendy whom was also treated poorly, did her best to assure us that; of her many many years coming, these were new hosts and the negative treatment was not normal to her prior experience there. Unfortunately there is no where on the campground or online to make a review or comment for their manager to see. The details of what happened are more than a reviewer would need to read, but I do hope Bill Cramer (Recreation Manager for the site) sees this review and responds. I would really love for him to be aware of what happened. If the camp hosts are ever replaced, I will change my rating to 5 stars without hesitation. read more

Just got home from camping here, and I must admit it was one of the best weekends we've had. There was nothing fancy about it, just you/family, your tent, and nature at its prettiest. Reservations were simple completed the process in less than 5 minutes, but the lady below is right you dont know much about the site you picked until you get there, which we found exciting. They did however note when you "hovered" above a campsite on the their website map, which ones were fully shaded, and which ones were partially shaded so maybe they updated it. There were a few nice empty sites around so first comes aren't that bad of an option. The camp hosts really made it all the better. They welcomed us with big smiles, helped us with any questions we had and even lent us their skillet because we forgot to bring a pan! Thanks and much appreciation to them (wish I remembered their names). Silver Lake and Kit Carson Lodge which is right alongside the lake is a short 5 minutes away by car not sure how many by hike guessing around 10, 20 minutes. You could rent motor boats and canoes at the Kit Carson Lodge where they also have a general store. You can swim, (if you dont mind cold water) fish, and boat there. Theirs also a couple hiking trails nearby down the roads. Vault toilets, no showers, and drinking water lines were broken while we were there but we were told they should be fixed soon. Bears do frequent the area so food must be disposed of! Bear boxes are provided on most sites to lock your food away. Nights are very cold, and being 7,000+ the winds were powerful. I hope this helps, I couldn't find much about these campgrounds when looking it up so I decided I'd let others know a little more about it. Good luck!! read more

Just got back from a much needed camping trip. We tent camped in site #54 which was a very nice space. It was a little walk from the car which is nice because I hate tent camping near a road. It is also close to the outhouse but not close enough to smell it. It was extremely quiet & everyone we met was real friendly. The lake is a short walk from the site & a great place to kayak. Wish I could have stayed longer than 3 days. Will definitely go back next year. read more

NO WATER Please check before you go. We were told by host that all campgrounds in Ca. will not allow water for your trailers. That is not true We checked with two other campgrounds in the area and they will allow water for RV's.. We payed for a fourteen day stay. Cost $19 to cancel. NO TAP WATER all sealed off. read more

Check in was so easy. We just drove in and found our spot that was marked reserved. The camp host was amazingly friendly. The campsite was clean and felt so private! When we hiked around the area, the rangers were over the top helpful and friendly. This was a very enjoyable camping experience. The surrounding area was great for biking, hiking, swimming, fishing and geocaching. And we did it all. The potholes are beautiful, popular and crowded. But the Minkalo Trail was private and magical. We biked all over the campground and surrounding roads to get a great workout on beautiful one-lane hilly terrain. At first, we could not understand why we were being charged double rate for our site until we did some research and realized we had reserved the double occupancy campsite meant for up to 12 people. Oops! It was sort of indulgent for just the four of us. Next time we will be a little more cautious when making our reservation. We had to port in our own water because no one could be certain if the campsite water was potable. That was a bit inconvenient and the only reason this review doesn't get 5 stars. But, I would rather be safe than sorry. read more

Not to be confused with Plasse resort on the South side of Silver Lake, this place is a National Forest campground, pit toilets, no showers. I liked the location with easy walk to lovely Silver Lake. Sites are very large and spread out. Quiet at night. My big beef is with the reservation system which is outsourced to a private company. Only a limited number of sites are available for online reservation. The rest are first-come, first serve. The problem is that you can't really tell much about the site you are reserving online, except a simple map of location within campground. The site we reserved was in full sun, which was terrible in the middle of August. We saw that there were many available sites and naturally, we wanted to swap. The campground host told us there would be a $10 fee and we would forfeit the first night's fee as well. What? That's ridiculous. So we actually ate the cost and just paid for a different site. We joked that we could "sublet" our previous site if there came along a desperate campsite seeker late at night...alas, such musings were just fun campfire talk. Go mid-week, don't reserve ahead of time would be my advice. Take your chances to enjoy a fabulous lake and a peaceful campground. read more
