We turned around to eat here after a quick time count, noting we were hours from our next stop. Since we had no cell service until we were inside, it was a gamble. It paid off. First, the service. It was a little slow to get rolling but the gal who helped us out was top-notch. She went above & beyond after my 82yr old father hurt his hand somewhere en route to or from the restroom. He was holding a napkin on it & was embarrassed. She discreetly brought him a bandaid, PUT IT ON & TOOK THE SOILED NAPKIN. Even now, it brings a teat to the eye. She was kind & understanding. To say it was touching would be an understatement. Each couple split a chicken pasty meal, the parents had water, while the hubs & I each added a local beer. The pasty crust was light & flaky. The filling wasn't overly seasoned but had good flavor. The slaw was sweet & solid. The star I would have docked for could be cleaner overall (those displays collect stuff) & faster in service gets a wash from the detail and time well-spent on that service. I'd much rather wait a little longer & leave feeling human. So, maybe we could all slow down a bit & pay more attention to detail. read more

While on the way to Pictured Rock National Lakeshore, we were in need of some fuel before our hike and happened to come across this "hole in the wall gem." This is about 20 minutes before the park. The food and coffee were sufficient/average... given the lack of options in this area, but by all means... it did the trick. What really stood out was the down-home, feel good hospitality and the decor was "entertaining" to say the least. If I was ever in the area again, I would stop back. It's solid for what it is. I had lunch here yesterday and I gotta tell you it was very good. I've been traveling in Michigan this week, mostly on the UP. It was such a good time. I have fallen in love with pasties. These meat pies with vegetables in them are sort of the great grandfather of a hot pocket. That's really way over simplified. Pasties came over from Cornwall in England and Wales with the manners that came over in the 1700s. The bear trap in serves a wonderful pasty. There's is unique and that it has all the proper vegetables in it, peas, carrots, onions, and rutabagas plus a very lean ground beef, it just makes for a wonderful pastry filling. The outside of it seems to be kind of like a yeast bread dough or something that you would cut up into a dumpling maybe my mother used to make a yeast bread like this to wrap things in and make our own little hot pockets at home. This is a good rendition of it my pasty came with a bear on top of it. It came with some coleslaw, very good coleslaw. It also came with a serving of brown gravy. It was very good and it really made the perfect meal. Not too much not too little, it was just right. Goldilocks reference intended. read more

The Bear Trap is phenomenal We very much stumbled upon this place yesterday. My husband and I both ordered a patsy. Our first I'll admit. I had the vegetable filled with potatoes, carrots and rhubarb. My husband had the beef and veg with a brown gravy. Both were savory, perfectly seasoned, and downright addictive. We decided to visit again today after a 10 mile hike that was near by. We both ordered the white fish dinner. The white fish was a pan-seared, flavorful fish served with creamy homemade mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, and warm bread. My husband originally wanted a club sandwich but switched after hearing my order. He was thrilled he did. Incredible food, attentive service, and worth the short drive from town. Novelty at its finest. This place is a hunters wet dream. It definitely lives up to its name. Soon as you walk in a bunch of stuffed taxidermy bears and wildlife and actual bear traps, if your a wildlife lover not the most appetizing thing to see right before you eat, like hey we just used these giant traps to kill these animals. Stopped here a few times, highly recommend going in the day, the night time crowd seems to be composed of a fair amount of local drunks sitting at the bar that look like they could all be related, and not in a good way, like your cousins your mother type a way, not to stereotype but yea if you hang out after dark you could end up in your own version of Deliverance!!! During the day is better, the staff was friendly enough, but holy moly menu, I don't know how this restaurant can have so many items on the menu, until you look, it truly is bar food, everything is fried, probably even the salads. But this menu could give the Cheesecake Factory a run for its money. Food was what you expect, frozen bar food, for what it is it's not bad. But this place loses stars for being dirty, the table was dirty, the menus were dirty, the cups looked dirty, and if you look at everything in the place it was all dirty. Needs a deep clean. It is pretty much the only stop between GM and Munising. Like I said a novelty at best, Gkids thought it was neato except the granddaughter not so much she wanted to cry for the dead bears. I too would rather see live bears in a cage at this place then dead bears and traps...This place needs to update its name, I think, maybe Bears House, or Bears Den, or Big Bears...something that doesn't signify your going to die a painful death or chew off your on leg to survive...but I am sure they will cruise along with what they know. read more

First met Heather, simply amazing and hilarious. Then met one of the owners Dawn. Just great people! Dawn also owns another restaurant near this one called Bear Den. (Currently closed on Tuesdays she said). 2 pool tables. Sweet decor. Great fruit pasties, pulled pork Sammy with pickles and cheese (recommended by Heather) was the best sandwich I've ever had probably. So you can change the sauce of the pork sandwich. Which is nice! The bun was phenomenal also. It doesn't come with cheese and pickles so you have to order it like that. First time and an overall 5 star experience. read more

The Bear Trap Inn was my Dad's favorite place in the Munising area. Whenever I came up to visit him, we always ate here. Sadly, he recently passed away. While my wife and I were recently up in Munising, I knew we had to come to the Bear Trap Inn one more time. Well... it was twice. He knew that I loved Perch. In the UP there are plenty of places to get great Perch, but he always felt this was the best. Honestly, I can't disagree with him. The Perch here is always fresh. Prepared with Just a light breading and fried to perfection. Plus, you can't go wrong with waffle fries. My wife had the Walleye, which tasted amazing as well. Fresh, seasoned perfectly, and most importantly not over cooked. The service here is always friendly. It's a comfortable environment inside. When you sit at the bar, you feel like you're among friends and family. If you find yourself in Munising, drive about 15 minutes outside of town to the Bear Trap Inn. This is my new favorite place to grab a beer and food in the Munising area. It has a casual, upnorth feel and their food and service is excellent. They do everything right here, from the frosted beer mugs to the creamy coleslaw to the perfectly cooked pasties with the flakiest of crusts. Avoid this restaurant if possible :( Our family stopped by Bear Trap Inn for late lunch on July 5, 2022 on our way from Mosquito Beach trail to Kitch-iti-Kipi as it was on our route. It was a huge mistake. We would be better off getting a bite somewhere in Munising or some other place down H-15 road. Though we ordered a pretty simple food - quesadilla, some fried perch baskets, and a burger it took 1h and 15 min to get it to us! This was unbelievable and painfully slow. We saw people on other tables that came after us already getting their food while out waitress kept telling us it was coming. And finally it came... The perch came as tiny over fried smelly pieces. We could only eat few and to leave the rest despite being hungry. Quesadilla was certainly not made fresh but probably reheated from a fridge or something as it was chewy and tasteless. Only burger was more or less OK. And all this after waiting for more than an hour! We were completely disappointed and pissed off with this. The day before we ate at Grand Marais Tavern in Grand Marais and also ordered Perch Basket. I suggest folks from Bear Trap Tavern kitchen take a short trip there and take some lessons on how to cook perch and how it should taste. Overall, Bear Trap Inn was one of the worst places we ate during our 7 day trip across UP. I strongly suggest skipping it. read more

This was a great find! We called ahead with a party of 12 for breakfast and they were SO accommodating. They had the table set for us and were ready to take our order. I'm pretty opinionated about breakfast food. There's a fine line between undercooked and overcooked, but everything was spot on here. we have visited the bear trap for many years, we went Saturday night for dinner. The food was OK, but the thing that bothered me most is when I went to go use the restroom so I went to the women's restroom and when I walked in the owners daughter was changing her baby, which I did not have a problem with that, however, after I went into the stall, I heard a man come in, and he was speaking with the young lady (husband or boyfriend) and then all of a sudden he said I have to take a sh**, while I was still in the stall , he proceeded to use the stall next to me. the wife or girlfriend didn't even say anything to him. all I have to say is how inappropriate and I'll be sure to tell my friends as well about the lack of professionalism read more

The Bear Trap Inn just kinda sneaks up on you after beautiful lined therapy miles. It's unreal beauty... Back to the Inn. So I'm thinking wait to have this pastie I've heard so much about. Then there's the Bear Trap, so shit I stop for I hope a beef pasty with gravy of course, or whitefish. You walk in and it's like whoa! There are bears inside the door! Got take a pic. Step in and it's a big place, clean, friendly. I sit at the bar and I believe it was Heather who took my order and recommended no gravy, but I still get the gravy! Dish arrives short time later and it kinda reminded of a very large empanada. Oh and it came with the gravy and a very good slaw. It was very good and I'll like another! We stop in here every summer on our annual motorcycle trip. There's normally about 50 of us but the bar and restaurant never have trouble keeping up. It's a very woodsy sort of destination stop for bikers, snowmobilers, side by side riders, hunters and fisherman. It's pretty much at the end of beautiful H58 if you're coming west from Grand Marais. Lots of dead stuffed things on the wall, wide open establishment that never disappoints. The staff is friendly, the prices are fair and the food is good. It's not fine dining or anything but it's good and it hits the spot. There's an all you can eat fish fry on Fridays, but I've never had the chance to try it. The bottom line: This is a great place to stop in if you are out in this neck of the woods looking for somewhere to have a meal and a few drinks in a cozy and inviting place. read more

Must be very seasonally driven because the food was bad, the drinks were poor, and the serice was worse. Burgers were small, and 16-18$ for the bare minimum of what you would expect at other places. I ordered 3 beers and barely got one, 3/4 of each beer was head (beer foam). I thought it was a joke at first. 90 minute wait with 5-10 other people in the place. Our order was wrong and when we pointed that out we were told we were all wrong and just left the wrong order on our table. It's draw is its out in the rural area and hikers, snow machine, and local folks stop there apparantly. Find another place if you can. read more

I'm one of the countless tourists visiting this beautiful part of the USA. And after a half or full day of hiking, I think this family owned restaurants is the place to refuel and relax. It's one of the best family owned restaurants I've been to. I live in Chicago so we have lots of great food, but not too many family style restaurants like this one. The menu carries a wide selection of food, I got the open faced turkey sandwich of Texas toast followed by a strawberry rhubarb pasty a la mode. Everything was delicious. The restaurant also serves many types of alcohol, if you are into that sort of thing. There were about six local beers on tap. Really tasty stuff. And I sat at the bar and chatted with the bartender when they were between customers. They had visited Chicago a lot before moving to this part of the country, so we exchanged stories. It was a phenomenal experience all around. All the staff were friendly and provided excellent service that went above and beyond. I highly recommend Bear Trap Inn. read more
