Have been biking and buying bikes for years. came to big bear to ride and this shop was recommended by a friend. I have been dying to try a new 29er bike and the owner and staff had just build a new one....they rented it to me and after 2 days i wanted to buy the bike. They made me a great deal, ordered some other requested items and have tuned it up now 3 times at no cost. That whole crew is great.....they all love to ride, race and help people enjoy the sport. This place is truly the best place to purchase or rent bikes in the entire Big Bear Lake Area! They have so many different bikes to rent, buy, or demo including road bikes, casual bikes, mountain bikes, and more. They have every kind of mountain bike here including hard-tail, full suspension, and cross-country. The price to rent mountain bikes here is way cheaper than renting at Snow Summit because at the mountain for an all-day demo package that includes an All-day lift ticket, all-day full suspension bike rental, and protection gear was $146/person!! Yikes!! They have excellent customer service and the employees are very knowledgable and helpful. If you like the rental bike so much, you may purchase it and they let you deduct the rental price from the purchase price. They also have helmets - regular and full-face! They have all the accessories you could ever need while biking like pumps, goggles, sunglasses, knee pads and elbow pads. They even have their own little tune-up center with tires and all the parts you could need and the prices are very reasonable! This place is located right off of Big Bear Blvd and is not hard to miss if you are driving up and paying attention. If your ever in the Big Bear Lake area, go and check out Bear Valley Bikes! Last year, I called and spoke to their "expert mechanic" Derek to describe the job and make sure he was going to do the work. After I dropped the bike off, I got a call from someone else they handed my job off to, someone I'd never met and hadn't talked to, which wasn't the agreement. I asked for Derek, he told me on the phone he was going to do the work and it ended up I got some other guy. When I questioned this, it ended up where whoever did do the work did a really bad job, and this was supposed to be a "pro build" (and at pro build prices.) I got the bike back and the plastic guide under the bottom bracket shell that keeps the derailleur cables in line was missing. And yes, it was there before I took the bike there, because I took pictures. They had to replace a shift cable, and the little rubber bumpers on the cables that run under the downtube to keep it from slapping and making noise were missing on that cable. Both derailleurs were out of adjustment. And both shift cables were cut off right at the pinch bolt. They also cut the carbon steerer tube off so there wasn't enough room to meet manufacturer spec for spacer distance, when I had included the installation instructions with the brand new fork when I dropped the bike off. I was told by someone at the shop when they called to tell me it was ready that Derek spent "all day" working on my bike, however someone else had already worked on my bike first, and whatever he did the next day couldn't have taken all day. I was also told that Derek was sick, except I would have been happy to wait until he wasn't sick to have him do the work. What came across is just don't question who is going to work on your bike or they will do a really shitty job on purpose, because that's what happened to my bike. If anyone wants pictures, message me and I'll post them. If you have an SWorks snob bike and a lot of money, they'll probably do a better job, which is how it is at most shops. If you don't have an expensive bike, they'll give it to someone to learn on and then you get mistakes, sloppy work or they scratch the frame etc. Mine wasn't a high end build, but it wasn't a cheap build either. I'm sure there are others who didn't get a good job, but most people who are serious cyclists don't have time to sit on a computer posting reviews but I had to take it to another shop and pay again to get all the missing stuff replaced, new shift cables and derailleurs adjusted properly. read more

Over priced parts. $45 for replacement brake pads, which retail for $22. That's robbery. I was surprised that they even had my model of brake pad. Service was OK. Just didn't realize I was being robbed until I got back off the mountain to see how much pads should cost. Oh well, it saved the trip from being a complete flop. read more

I had a bike that had been to another shop in Garden Grove (Richard's) 4 times over 3 months for the same issue with still incomplete work. (see my other reviews) So I took the bike to Big Bear Bikes and In 5 minutes they had the bike repaired and running perfectly. And it has been running perfectly ever since. Next time I need a bike or need repairs,... I'll be back to Big Bear Bikes. read more

This is a real freindly bike shop that cares about biking. came up to big bear for the weekend and stoped by to ask about some trails. as soon as they found out we were from out of town they gave us all the info we needed to shred big bear up. Most shops ( the other one in town) dont care much for non locals but this shop went the extra mile and you could tell they really cared about biking. read more

5 star customer service! Showed up on a Friday night just minutes before they closed with my broken bike. Instead of me not having my bike for the weekend Derrek fixed it while we waited! I own a car repair shop and I have not seen customer service like that in a very long time. Derrek and his staff were courteous and very helpful. Went up to Big Bear with my daughters and husband to play around on the tails that I used to ride a lot, but my Kona Coiler Deluxe had NO brakes. I don't usually ride that bike (just put it in the back of the truck without testing it first), because I wanted full suspension. Called Bear Valley Bikes, they said to bring it over. The mechanic stopped what he was doing, put it in the stand and bled both brakes, put on new pads and adjusted! I can't tell you how impressed I was with the service and price. The guys were amazing! Horrible, HORRIBLE, horrible service. I went in there asking if they can fix my back brake and I could tell the clerk was not busy. Well he was. He was busy talking to his lady friend. He told me that it would take three hours. Not a single person was in there. Why can't a simple fix be done in 20 mins. Sorry I interrupted his talk with his lady friend. This place was horrible. No one greeted me or asked me how I was doing. I would of paid top dollar to get my bike back on the mountain that day. What an idiot. I would of gladly paid 60 bucks just to get back on the mtn. Bear valley bike shop ruined my whole day of riding. I expect more out of a full service bike shop. Just keep driving past this horrible shop. read more

Wanted to share our experience at Bear Valley Bikes today. My wife and I bought a forest pass their a few weeks ago (after Tour de Big Bear) and were greeted by a friendly couple - the girl with the Scottish accent and her partner (I guess). We chatted, got our forest pass, all was well... Yesterday we hired 3 mountain bikes for my wife and her (~70-year old) parents to ride around the lake (on the road) - I had my own bike. The blonde American woman that served us was not friendly and was pretty curt, not really rude, but not far away. She checked the bikes for scratches and dings, and noted them down, we signed the papers, and set off for the 17-mile round-the-lake road ride. Upon returning, the same blonde woman took a long time thoroughly checking over the bikes - checking the bars, levers, shifters, frames, gears, even riding the bikes. I said nothing, just stood and watched (but something in the back of my mind thought this was weird). Finally, she located a tiny piece of paint missing from the inside corner of the rear triangle of one of the bikes, where the chain stay meets the seat stay, on the disc rotor side. She pointed at it several times without saying anything or looking at anyone. Then she showed it separately to two other employees. She finished her "checks", then came and informed me that the bike was damaged and it was a $10 charge per paint chip, of which she "only" found one. I went off! "Come on, you rent mountain bikes at a ski resort and you charge $10 per paint chip. My pregnant wife and her 70 year old parents just rode on the road around the lake!" Her response, "Well, you saw me checking and marking the bikes before you left." "Nah, nup, I'm not paying for that." "You can speak to the Derek then." "Yes, good. I'll speak to Derek." A minute later the nice Scottish woman called me inside (not the manager, Derek) to pay. She didn't mention anything about the "damage", was friendly, asked how our ride was and charged me the appropriate bike rental. I'm not sure that I'll go back there again - actually, after sleeping on it, I am sure: I won't go there again, what happened is just wrong and there was no apology or further discussion. I think I should have used the 10% discount coupon for Chains Required that I printed - it seems permanently available on their website - next time... read more
