I went to Bearden's last month. It was the first time I've been there since I was a kid. For the part, everything was as I remembered - good food, lots of people and of course the train. However, one thing was different. There were no cashiers behind the counter. Instead, we are greeted with three kiosks. I have to admit, I considered walking out. Seeing those really ruined that "old fashioned feeling". I am glad to see others have the same concern about this. First of all I love diners and the decor in this one was on point. It was absolutely adorable inside. They had old signs hanging and the small booths. The staff was wonderful and very fun. Some of them really interacted with the customers. There is no host here. You seat yourself and you actually order through the kiosk. Once you order and your food is ready, then a staff member will call your name and bring out your food. The menu selection was more than I expected. I got the peanut butter burger and it was amazing. I thought it was going to be weird, but it actually works. They were super busy, so expect to wait a little for your food. Also, there is seating outside when weather is nice. Been passing this place for years. Finally stopped to check it out. Here is the scoop. The place is very diner like. Which is good! Staff was nice and very helpful when we ordered. Lots of booths against the walls and tables in middle. You order at the counter then you find a seat and they bring it out to you. We got 2 small shakes. They are good but small is small. They are very tiny for the price. Not really worth it. Got a cheeseburger. Just a regular one. Not any of the special burgers. It was ok. Not bad just ok. We got the full onion rings to share. They are beer battered which is the only way to have them. They are good. But the portion is rather small for the price. I think we got round 6 rings. Good but small. They do have some craft sodas, which looked good like birch beer and cream soda. I did not try because we got the shakes. Overall taste was good. Everything was good. Shake and onion rings good! Just pricey for the amount. We paid $36 with a small tip, because your pressured to tip. Burger ok. Not great. Slightly disappointed by the experience which is why the score. Not really worth it. It's been so long since I've been to Beardens but it was fun to visit tonight for nostalgia's sake. I'll start off with the one thing I wasn't a fan of and it's ordering on a screen. It works for some places but for places like this where you go for the fun experience it feels pretty sterile. Anyways I got a pb burger and the smoked Gouda burger, split onion rings with my mom, and she got a plain burger and everything was so good! I remember the burgers used to be small and that's why I got two, but these were really big. And if you're curious, try the peanut butter burger it's really good! I had not been to Bearden's probably since right after high school with my dad. Decided to go check it out last weekend and I was really pleasantly surprised. It was really busy and was lucky to find literally the last table in the place. You now order on a touchscreen and they call your name out instead of a traditional waitress which I am OK with. They were so busy that our food took almost 30 minutes to get out but the smoked Gouda burger I got was pretty great. I'm not a huge french fry guy, but their french fries are fantastic especially if you order a side of cheese cup with it. It had been so many years since I had been here, but I definitely want to go back a lot sooner and maybe not on a weekend when it was so busy. read more

As locals of Rocky River who used to frequent Bearden's, we were hesitant to go back after our last experience where they eliminated in person cashier to take your order and do not allow cash. However, we always liked the burgers and sitting outside on a nice day. Well our experience was even worse this time. There are three stations that you need to use to place your order with no option for person to take your order (like McDonalds). Two of them were not operating and a group of 6 youths were occupying the only working one. After waiting for 10 minutes, we left and went to Five Guys. Definitely will never go back to Bearden's due to impersonal service and lack of cash option. Try going back to your history guys and do better. What a Shame. read more

My friends and I ordered two burgers, two fries, an order of onion rings, and two fountain drinks for $45. They forgot our cups for the soda and we had to ask for them. The fries were cold and soft. Also, I never received bacon on my burger, which I paid two extra dollars for. Then, on our burgers, there was a chunky, creamy white sauce on the top bun. Although Bearden's is nothing like it was "back in the day," I get it that restaurants change over time, especially when they've been in business as long as Bearden's. But ... we drove 60 miles to eat at Bearden's yesterday, chiefly so our 8-year-old trains-crazy grandson from Colorado could enjoy the train running around the top of the dining area. That part didn't disappoint and he truly enjoyed the feature. However, the food and the ambience both were quite disappointing. We each selected the "build a burger" option and our grandson got the kids' meal hamburger & fries. While our food arrived promptly enough, the order process was far too time-consuming to figure out how to use the self-serve kiosk. While the screen is easy enough to read, size-wise, we made several mistakes and had to empty the cart twice and start over before we finally could make the system work for us. I'm sure using a waitress or two is more expensive, but I'm also sure that having personnel take orders -- even at the counter -- would be less time-consuming and definitely friendlier. Our struggle was fairly obvious, but the young man at the counter the entire time did not offer to help us. Then, when our order came -- quickly enough, as noted -- we were disappointed. First up were the milkshakes; we ordered a strawberry flavor to share and our grandson chose Oreo cookie. His was *almost* thick enough to be considered a true milkshake, but our was not. Bright pink, soupy and the 'strawberry' flavor is not made with strawberry ice-cream but instead a syrup of some sort that tastes like kids' medicine. Yuck. We paid extra for whipped-cream atop ours and did not receive the topping - definitely disappointing and terrible in both consistency and flavor -- we each took only two sips and gave up. Our grandson, a huge milkshake fan, did not drink more than half of his. Thankfully, cups for water are available at the soda machine. So, warning: if you're expecting a milkshake like those offered by Steak 'n Shake, Sonic or McDonald's, you're going to be startled and disappointed. Bearden's is "phoning it in" with its milkshakes and, for the price, certainly needs to step up its game. The burgers arrived and, while both big and fried perfectly, someone on the burger line must have decided that we looked like we needed more sodium in our diets. Both "build-a-burgers" (only ketchup, mayo and lettuce added) were over-salted, to the point that the eating experience was mostly ruined. Inexplicably, our grandson's French fries had zero salt; at least that problem can be remedied at the table. The onion rings were extremely greasy -- four large rings to an order -- which is an indication that the oil temperature is too low. The batter-style breading (rather than crumb-type) would be excellent if it were not so oily. Added to all that: diner-style eateries (especially those evoking the 1950s) are not 'dim.' They're brightly lighted all the way 'round -- and certainly don't have low-hanging lights over the booths where a diner can bang his/her head (which I did). The entire dining area was grimly dark, which was awful on a gray Saturday (May 23, 2026). To sum up the experience: it was the least value for a $50 lunch that we've ever gotten. To add insult to injury, the ordering kiosk added a 15% tip without prompting, a hefty add-on when the only interaction with waitstaff was the young man who carried our order to the table. Even if our grandson requests a trip to the "train restaurant" the next time he visits from Colorado, we won't be back. read more

Towards the end of my holiday time and I was going a little stir crazy, so I headed out for lunch. I was excited to see that Bearden's offered veggie or Impossible patties with all the fixings, or subbed into their fancy burgers. I had a Gouda burger with Impossible and some shoestring fries. Both were pretty solid, maybe not the best I've ever had, but good! I just went with water, but it looked like they had house or craft sodas, so I would definitely be interested in trying those. I do have to say, the sodium level in the food was pretty high. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised from a burger and fries, but I drank around 4 glasses of water when I got home! The interior is cute - very retro. This is probably not the place for a quiet lunch or dinner. I was not the only one going stir crazy that day if the general noise level of the out of school crowd is anything to go by. So overall, a fun cute place to visit with good food, and a pretty low-key, but not quiet, family friendly vibe. read more

Pretty standard fast food joint. I went during a trivia night and it wasn't too packed -- I easily found a table. It is a no-cash establishment, and you self order at the front kiosk style. I ordered for two and it took about 20 minutes to receive the food. You could hear them cooking up all the burgers so I can't complain about that. We got 2 big bears and there was a huge difference between the two -- one was not oily at all while the other was swimming in oil. The fries were lukewarm when they arrive at the table so I assume we got the last of a prior batch. Overall I thought it was good. Bearden's wears its aesthetic influences on its sleeve, with a nostalgic 50's diner vibe and unassuming yet delicious food. It is very much a fast food restaurant--so don't expect table service or the like--but as long as you are looking for a quick and easy restaurant Bearden's will absolutely satisfy your cravings and your wallet. Stopped in this evening for a burger and fries to go. No counter person available to take my order, but I saw a counter top kiosk to place it on. Upon completion I attempted to pay, but after checking thru the options, I did not find a "pay cash" option. When I asked the miserably rude young man behind the counter about how I could pay for my order with cash, he simply pointed to a laminated sign that said "credit cards only". No "sorry Sir", no "thank you Sir", just pointing a finger at a sign. Primarily because of that miserable piece of garbage, and their no cash option will be the primary reason I will never be in Bearden's again. Good parking available. When you walk in, there is a counter to order food at. Next to the counter is a sign directing dine in customers to seat themselves and place their order from their food. Apparently that was a Covid thing they are no longer doing. But the staff wasn't friendly when explaining this. I'm not sure they even knew the sign was there. Food was delicious. Very few or no gluten friendly options. The order of onion rings was literally only 3 pieces. Overall, good food. Service just ruined this experience. Actually the food is very good. This was a teenage hangout for me back in the 60s. This is where I took my kids and grandkids (can we go to the place with the train). We have not been there in 10 years. We went on a very hot evening. The A/C was obviously on the fritz so it was very warm and muggy. We noticed a free standing A/C that was not being used as a back up. They have switched to computer ordering...which we hate and they don't take cash. Bearden's food truck came out to my neighborhood and boy was it delicious! There was a line all night so I think it's fair to say my neighbors also enjoyed. I got to sample the following: Big Bear burger - good size burger with 2 patties and a special sauce that makes it. Topped with regular toppings. Cowboy burger - topped with an onion and bbq sauce. Though I've known of Bearden's most of my life, I had never been there. Knowing that today was the Opening Day of the baseball season, I thought it would be a good time to visit a restaurant first owned by, and named bt 1948 Cleveland pitcher, Gene Bearden. And I'm glad I did. My Burger, the Big Bear, was big, fresh, and delicious. The shoestring fries were crisp, hot, plentiful, and fresh. And the Onion Rings were among the BEST I've ever had. Fresh onions, dipped in a perfect, fluffy batter, and fried. I haven't had onion rings this good since the old Elegant Hog Saloon downtown. So good! I'll definitely be back! read more

Bearden's had their $0.70 burger on November 12 to celebrate their 70 years of business and I was one of those people who waited outside in 20-some degree weather to get into the place. I waited in line for about 30 minutes before finally entering inside the restaurant. The concept of this place is to order first then seat yourself and the employees will bring your food to you. Let me tell you, I didn't think a diner-like place would have burgers/patties the size of my hand. IT WAS HUGE and a lot more food than I expected. I also ordered a large order of homemade onion rings, which was fantastic! To be honest, my brain was bigger than my stomach and I was not able to finish my meal. Big portions and great food! We brought our 4 grandchildren here after a show. We were telling them how great it would be and how much their Daddy's Loved it and the train as kids. First the staff was amazing. That was all that was good. The train doesn't work anymore at all. The food was not good except the milk shakes which were very small. I wouldn't have even written this if we hadn't spent $90 for 6 small shakes, 2 kids meals, 2 regular cheese burgers, 1 regular hamburger. a veggie burger and 2 large fries.
