For your full service fly fishing fix, there are few better places than the Bear's Den in Taunton. Here's my top reasons: 1) Huge selection of in stock gear, tying materials and other necessities. Carrying approximately 20 manufacturers of the best quality rods and reels, seldom will you leave without that new Sage you've been dreaming about all winter. Their fly tying materials selection is just as impressive so expect to find the latest synthetics the stripers find so irresistible or that perfectly hued cape for tying parachute BWO's down to size 26. A large selection of flies are available for those of us that don't have the time (or skill) to do it ourselves. Overall, the shop is fairly balanced between fresh and salt water. 2) Service. Scott and the rest of the team at the Bear's Den have always been extremely helpful. I've purchased a rod and reel or two from these guys and they were quick to share their opinions on value and performance, and did an excellent job outfitting me to get me on the water, educating me in some newer knots and terminal techniques. They also happily assisted in some rod repair, shipping one rod back to the manufacturer while suggesting cheaper home repair for some lesser damage on others. They are knowledgeable, outgoing, eager to share and educate, and they do a fair amount of fishing themselves, so make sure you ask 'em where the bite is. 3) Community and Outreach. The Bear's Den conducts frequent fly fishing casting and tying classes throughout the year. They also sponsor events featuring the sport's legends (Lefty Kreh and Lou Tabory to name some) to help keep spirits high through that long winter season. 4) Great website. Easily navigated. Find their full inventory of merchandise, and scheduled shows and classes. The only downside to the Bear's Den it's distance from prime fishing grounds, so most likely you will need to go out of your way to get there. But you should feel good going out of your way. Local shops like the Bear's Den exist for the pure love of the sport, not because they are lucrative, and that should be plenty to justify the extra gas money. Great selection of rods, reels, lines, flies... well just about everything. Being able to cast the rods is excellent. The staff is very knowledgeable, helpful and patient. Worth a drive...but if that's not in the cards, their shipping is prompt and well packaged. read more

Scott and his crew are the best! They all make the extra effort to help you get what you need. This is the type of personal service that you don't get at most big box places, especially on-line. I live 900 miles away and I can get still get great advice and recommendations. Scott is not only knowledgable, he knows everything about every product he carries, but he is also willing to take time with each customer and get them straight. You ever get great service and not realise how great until later? Today I grab a sage fly rod that I had not touched in a few years.. Low and behold the tip is broken off.. So I went down to bears den.. Thinking well I will get a new tip and deal with it.. The owner informed me that they could send it out to sage.. They would repair it.. Awesome! So 60.00 dollars and its off... I get home check out the website low and behold sage charges 50.00! So if you include shipping I don't believe they made a cent...... What incredible service! Having a lifelong love and appreciation for fishing, I have always fished the salt with casting gear or trolling gear but never tried the fly. Taking serious thought about starting fly fishing and even though its fishing, I KNEW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about fly fishing short of A River Runs Through It. Scott helped me out in ways that exemplify all aspects of customer service and salesmanship. We informed him the types of fishing that we were looking to do mostly stripers, maybe some bones and tarpon if we headed southbound and possibly salmon or steelhead. We were kind of looking for a middle of the road rod, I know that we more or less should have 2 or possibly 3 rods for that range of fish but we are just getting started. He did not try to sell us top dollar rigs with all kinds of fancy bells and whistles. He suggested some rods of different price ranges and let us try them right out side. Scott rigged up the poles with some line and actually taught us the basics of a cast so we could feel which rods we threw better than the others. You test drive a car...why can't you test your rod? It was awesome. Scott also explained all the dynamics of the reels....and didn't try to sell us product that we didn't need or want. He is an authority on the equipment he sells and I do not think there is anything that he does not have or could not get for you. I would recommend this shop to anyone who currently fly fishes or is interested in fishing. I am picking up 2 rods this week. I will shop here exclusively for all products even if I can find them cheaper online. Bear's Den is the largest fly shop I've been to. Huge store, indoor casting space, ton of materials/classes and a staff that knows about fly fishing/fly tying. Fly Fisherman / Fly Tyer's heaven. I've never written a Yelp review before but the service I just received from Bear's Den has compelled me to do so. I had ordered a pair of flats wading boots prior to an upcoming fishing trip to the Bahamas. When I received the order I realized immediately the boots were too small and with only 48 hours before my flight I assumed I was out of luck. I called Bear's Den and explained the situation. They checked their inventory and determined they did not have the size I needed in stock. Now I really assumed I was out of luck. But Bear's Den called the manufacturer and arranged to have the boots overnighted to my home address. And if that wasn't enough, when the boots arrived at Bear's Den instead of my home (through no fault of their own) they literally drove them to my house (a 6 hour roundtrip drive) and hand delivered them! Who does that? Bear's Den does and they've earned my business from here on out. read more
