Bears has been one of SJB most unique and joyful places we have ever been to. We have many good memories there with friends and were sad to see it closing but Lori deserves a happy retirement! She did announce her retirement and many signs were posted with the schedule of her last month there. I don't know who Andy A is but he is sadly mistaken because its clear from the looks of the building, she is moving. Cute little watering hole in SJB, with a nice patio for smoking stogies! Chill vibes and great beer and wine selection! My wife and I came here after antique shopping on a Friday afternoon around 2, and we really enjoyed ourselves. Greeted by Teddy Bear, an awesome Australian Shepard (I think) and the laziest of cats, we were offered a great selection from local breweries and wineries. Patio is cozy with gas heat lamps throughout, and open for cigar smoking which you can purchase inside the bar. I'm not a smoker myself, but the concept is fun. A different experience for the small town, but enjoyable and quaint. We'll def be back!! read more

This place is out favorite stop between the Bay Area and the Central Coast. It's a cozy wine/ beer bar that's really casual and friendly. This is very quirky tasting room with a surprisingly high quality selection of locally sourced beer and wine. Parking is street only, but this isn't the bay area so that's something that is totally possible to do. Worst case scenario is that you'll be around the corner down a side street a few blocks away. This is a difficult spot to describe. upon entry you'll be in the bar counter area which is where you pick up your drinks, peruse the menu, introduce yourself to the dog, and chit chat with whoever is hanging around. Keep on going in and you'll get to the rest of the space which is eclectic in the extreme. There is more counter seating, chaises, lounge chairs, ironmongery, bear themed décor, an impressive beer garden, couches, a water station, snacks for four legged people, an amiable cat, a smoking area(popular with cigar aficionados. Don't panic the space is more then big enough to get away from them should you need to) , space heaters, blankets (for when you get chilly), and in general a whole bunch of amazing space to relax with a drink. There are a limited number of taps which means most folks come with friends and share a bottle. All of which fine, but expect to spend around twenty dollars here more or less depending on choices made. The owner lives and works on site everyday, so there are no real service issues. The front bar counter area can get jammed on super busy days, but the sheer mellowness of the spot goes a long ways towards defusing any particular badness. There is no kitchen but no one minds if you bring your own food. It's not the fanciest spot in town, but it is the most charming, intimate and mellow spot for a glass in the area. read more

I love this place. Not too many places to just lounge in San Juan. But this place is the best. Beautifully curated grounds to enjoy. Lori is the sweetest and you can not say anything bad about her or her establishment because she gives you 100% of herself. She is a woman-owned and operated business and that itself is tough in this environment. There are also two lovely animals to greet you and how I love shop animals! They give a real touch of humanity to any establishment. The selection of wine and beer is fantastic. She's always switching it up. So never a dull tasting experience there. I took my father here and with his tough discerning option, he totally enjoyed himself here. We left smiling! You will too. read more

Love this little place. Been there maybe a half dozen times since it opened a few years ago, all pre-covid. Always have a great craft beer or three on tap, and some good ones bottled (had a belgian hefewiezen that was stellar). The wines, as I recall, were mostly local. Which for the most part means "meh" for me. Speaking of local wines: I liked several of the Calera pinots when Josh owned the place, a feminine style more akin to Russian River pinots than to the masculine Monterey styles. Have not tried one since the new owners took over, but that is the only winery I can recommend in San Benito County. But I digress. We were talking about Bears. Great beer and a wonderful back patio to enjoy it. They also sell all kinds of cigars, but I'm not going to tell you that because I don't want to smell yours next time I'm there, LOL. And one of the best things about the place is the owner. Lori has been there every time I visited, and always friendly and helpful. Before the pandemic she had some good music in the back on weekends. Hope it starts again. It was fun. RIP, Bear. Your Mom is keeping the place just the way you liked it. 2 puppies. One kitten. Awesome business owner , great conversation, none of the nonsense you would get walking into a crowded bar, this is tasting and drinking with the relaxed life in mind. We are visiting from Hayward and it's the weekend so we wanted something different to try. My husband chose the wine and I chose a Hazy IPA. You also can have a sampler box of beers if you like as well. At least that is what I saw. The owner is the awesome and there were lots of friendly conversation to be had. We stopped here for a Pre-Valentine's beverage on our way to our hotel and had a great time. It's a cool little mission style bar in the heart of San Juan Bautista. They are serving sausages so that you are ordering food in line with COVID protocols and have a fair amount of patio seating that still provides space between guests. The owner also came out to sanitize after each group left. We felt very safe having a beverage here, enjoyed the ambiance, and were happy to support a local small business owner. We love this place. Lori has been expanding the outdoor space and adding wonderful little touches that give Bear's its charming ambiance. In addition, she's added beer on tap (quality brews) and is working with other local businesses to offer dinner to her guests. I am so happy that her business is progressing. San Juan would not be the same without this little gem. Lori is knowledgeable about her products and extremely accommodating--she even brought us lap blankets when the wind picked up outside one evening. We have been to one of the musical events and the feel of it was both casual and intimate, and the artist was pretty good too. By and large however our favorite part about Bear's is Bear (and Teddy). Bear and his little sister Teddy are the adorable Australian Shepherds that occasionally stop by your table for a pet. First of all I cant believe that I have lived in San Juan for over a year and tonight was the first night I have been to this wonderful little gem. My boyfriend and I had a well behaved older dog and a wild puppy. Lori was so welcoming and accommodating to us that we immediately felt excited and grateful to dine in this wonderful establishment.
