I'm feeling a bit generous today so I'll give Beatrix four stars. The ambience and beverages are definitely worth four stars - the fresh squeezed Valencia orange juice was fantastic, as was the honey cinnamon latte, and I really enjoyed my blue mimosa. I ordered the quinoa cakes with poached eggs, which was delicious - looks simple but the red sauce complemented the quinoa perfectly. However, my husband thought his omelet was just ok, and there wasn't quite enough egg to go with the veggie filling. The side of hash browns was nice and crispy on the outside but mushy on the inside. The low point was the lemon ricotta pancakes. We were debating between them and the day's special, the pecan French toast. Our server told us both were good, it would be a win-win decision. The pancakes turned out to be incredibly wet and mushy. The texture was off-putting to me. My husband thought they tasted awful. I guess the staff immediately noticed our dissatisfaction and came over to explain that's how it is supposed to be..."souffle like". Maybe they should have said that on the menu, instead of describing the dish as "fluffy". Fluffy they were most definitely not. It felt like we were being served a bunch of excuses and that we were weird because we didn't like mushy pancakes. However, the manager(?) did replace our dish with pancakes made with their "regular" batter, which was significantly better than the "souffle" version. Finally, I was rather irked when our server handed us our drinks by passing them over the rail seating we were next to, rather than walking the extra couple of steps to come around to our table side. After the pancake incident, he didn't return to refill our glasses anymore either. Food service: espresso is on the medium side. Not bad, just not rich. When my food arrived I was missing a glass of milk and hash browns. (The house took $6.45 off my bill.) the steak with Chimichurri was good. The eggs were OK but unseasoned. The Lemon pancake was a bit disappointing. Very thin, more like a thick crape and the syrup was just lemon flavored simple syrup. All and all... everything seemed a bit off from the very beginning. This was my first time here (during COVID) and I must say the staff handled the patrons gracefully during my time here. Food was great and the service was just as good! They are not accepting reservations at this time so it was first come, first serve; and being that it was such a beautiful day outside (July); I selected to wait for outdoor seating on a Saturday morning. The wait was less than 15 minutes, so not bad at all! Once we were seated, I selected the egg white omelette with brown sugar bacon on the side! Although the service was great at both locations, the ambiance was esthetically pleasing more at the Fulton Market location. The drink menu is great......especially the sangria. But if you really want your mouth to water,allow yourself to try both appetizer plates of the Brussel sprouts and the fries on the menu. We had tried to come here a couple of other times, but there's generally a pretty long wait. We made a reservation this time and were seated within minutes of arriving. I would definitely suggest making a reservation ahead of times if you plan on coming here. Food-wise, this place has options for anyone and everyone, accommodating any and every dietary restriction. While the menu can get expensive, it is totally worth it because a lot of the food you get here, you can't really find anywhere else. I got the Mushroom Risotto and my girlfriend got the Straight A salad -- both were handedly crafted and incredibly flavorful! This place is perfect for date night or any special occasion. Ordered Straight "A" Salad which was beautifully made and tasted great although the dressing could use some honey to boost flavors of Asian Pears and Asiago. Asked the sever for honey/lemon :) Local Burratta is a great appetizer if you are looking to share. Kale pesto was delicious and the multigrain toast had perfect texture to balance soft cheese and pesto. Second night, I had their special - black rice risotto which was phenomenal. Beatrix. Cool name. Cool vibe. Standard urban "American new" brunch fare. But overall, just falls a bit short in multiple areas and is more "meh" than marvelous. Admittedly, I'm from Portland (yes, it's just like the show Portlandia. Please stop asking.), so I have some pretty high brunch standards. This place seemed like it was a pretty good bet - busy, lots of hipster light bulbs (Edison bulbs are to hipsters what porch lights are for moths), lots of greenery and a menu filled with farm-to-table SOUNDING fare. I came here for an 8-person brunch so had an opportunity to try a lot of the menu. My kale salad fell flat in a few ways: One, it was gritty. Like maybe there was dirt in it. Half the leaves were rubbery and wilted. And it just... wasn't that good. I tried one of my dining companions' hash browns, and they were literally mashed potatoes that had been browned on one side. My other dining companion was deeply disappointed in his too-sweet sangria. And another friend was given the wrong number of pastries, half of which he reported weren't good anyway. The coffee was meh. The service was fine, I guess. And the acoustics of the place are all wrong - the din is intolerably loud, making conversation next to impossible. Beatrix is like a brunch-based nightclub - don't come here to have quiet conversations with good friends, come here to have drunken hookups with strangers you regret the next day. One positive is that the food was passable. And unlike the Land of Brunch from whence I hail, Beatrix takes reservations. Be still my beating heart! No more 10-city-block-long brunch lines? The area is well lit, the vibe is engaging, the crowds aren't too loud. So 4 Stars there... The drinks were great! The service was efficient and when the restaurant closed around us, the server brought us muffins for the next day! Which I felt was sweet! So 4 Stars here... Here is where points where deducted, THE FOOD WAS LACKLUSTER. I ordered the Chicken Bebe. I even tried my husband's sea bass and was disappointed. The food lacked flavor to me and needed salt and seasoning. Nothing on the menu jumped at me as an exciting meal and I only ordered the chicken because of a referral. Even the caramel pie was disappointing. However, my muffin the next day, slightly warmed up was GREAT! That's why it's 3 Stars... I heard great things about their lunch menu but the food definitely need improvement. I didn't park here so I can't tell you about that. Wow! Beatrix is now one of my favorite places to eat in this area. I came after a long week of work to enjoy Friday afternoon and was so happy with everything. We started off with a couple of juices. The cucumber and mint soda was super light and refreshing and the carrot, apple, and ginger snap was something I felt was innovative, healthy, and delicious at the same time. It leans heavier towards the carrot, about 50%, and then maybe 35% towards the ginger snap but then you also get hints of the apple too. Loved it! We decided on sampling a few of their snacks since we had just recently finished lunch. The kennebec fries were great though I think I would have liked it with more potato inside the fries. My favorite part was actually the few slices of crispy lemons sprinkled on top and the delicious aioli with spices. The warm quinoa cakes were really delicious too - they were light, airy, and actually a great compliment to the heavier fries. My favorite snack was the tsukune (chicken meatball) with chili cilantro sauce. SO GOOD. YUMM! I wasn't able to taste the cilantro in the sauce so for those of you who have an aversion to cilantro, still give it a try! I wasn't hungry enough to get a bigger entree except for a bite of the chili and chocolate glazed salmon but I totally have my eye out for the mushroom quinoa burger on the next visit! Other non-food related points: The outside seating area is amazing on a nice low-wind day. Otherwise, they keep open windows even when you are sitting inside so you feel a small breeze. There are a plethora of Yelp reviews for brunch. So I tried and enjoyed that with my girls. On the other hand with the dinner scene, reviews appear scarce. So I arrived Tuesday night with slight skepticism. The quick-and-easy? I left with a new love to add to my list. First off, do something atypical and order a juice. Yes, it's dinner and you would like a douse of alcohol. Well, for just $6 more, you can turn that into a juice cocktail. I thought my blackberry and lychee lemonade was superb without the spike. Dinner mate across from me loved her virgin mango, orange, and pineapple nectar so much that she chugged two. Onto the "second" course, we ordered the fries, hummus, tsukune, and straight A salad for sharing. Most of them were good for sharing except for the tsukune which are coarse-ground chicken meatballs that came in four pieces. We just wanted to give it a try so we sliced each piece into halves. Don't let the chili-cilantro sauce throw you off because it's just a baby spice. The straight A salad caught me off guard and swooned me. With arugula, avocado, Asian pear, asiago, and almond, this was easily a pleasant start for the evening. Coming from a person who usually shies away from ordering salad, I see myself re-ordering this upon my return. It was simplicity done at its best. Main courses consisted of potato ravioli, pan-roasted sea bass, slow-braised short rib, skirt steak, and three caramelized pork shanks. It was a very lopsided party with lots of meat lovers. My short rib, ladled with balsamic steak sauce, was served in a rectangular block of lean meat with a thin layer of fat. Beneath the hot pile was a huge smear of mashed potatoes and on the side was a set of un-constructed salad with roasted romaine hearts and tomatoes. It was nothing complicated but everything that I wanted. The pork shank is huge with hints of fat scattered throughout, therefore it was especially tender and juicy. I liked it a little less than my short rib though. With the Michigan peaches, it was a tidbit sweet and I'm generally a savory person when it comes to entrees. I must also note Beatrix takes pleasure in bringing out the dishes at the same time. Two of the pork shanks were cold at the first cut and bite. We brought it to our server's attention and she immediately apologized for the mishap. With no questions asked, she took the pork shanks away and returned 10 minutes later with a set of fresh-made, well-glazed, and sizzling pork shanks. Cheers to top-notch service! (And for this, I gave Beatrix an extra star, therefore capping it at five.) Onto desserts, we skipped the pastry bar and focused on the menu offering. Among us, we shared the chia pudding, vanilla bean kulfi, and two slices of dark chocolate cake. Our server was kind enough to put a candle on the chocolate cake for our belated birthday boy. The cake was indeed as stated: tall, dark, and handsome. Dig your spoon deep into this flourless marvel of deliciousness and you will keep doing so until it's all gone. The kulfi, also known as Indian ice cream, is not to be neglected. The candied oranges and toasted pistachios were excellent complements. The ice cream itself is light by flavor but strong by physique. We almost resorted to using a steak knife to make it shareable. Nonetheless, I would order it and put my arms to work again. All in all, Beatrix is casual and buzzy. It's a good potential for hosting baby/bridal showers, out-of-town visitors, business dinners, girls' day/night out, etc. After trying both brunch and dinner, I must say the latter was much more charming and it won me over. read more

Really like the interiors and the space. Beatrix is a convenient and laid back place to catch up with friends and have a classic brunch. I ordered a matcha iced latte, having had one at a korean cafe on the prior days, the one at beatrix seemed a bit average / watery but im sure the regular coffee items are better. The Avocado Toast was nice but the bread was a bit too thick for my liking. But I liked the mix of jalapeños and avocado, just would have probs preferred it on piece of sourdough bread. Overall it was nice but not amazing which is why I've given a 3. But it's probs the best brunch place in the area. read more

Went to dinner with my work coworkers while in Chicago . Lots of gluten free options. Actually my coworker picked it because she knew of my dietary restrictions. The funny thing is she told me it was a Mexican restaurant. When we got there the only Mexican sounding item on the menu was a margarita drink. Lol. I am still thankful she tried so hard and of course I kept joking with her especially since I am Cuban and not Mexican. Anyway the selection was great and indeed a lot of gluten-free options. I've been here almost every time I visit Chicago, granted because I usually stay in the area and I think this is a great option for dining alone or with others. I haven't tried the brunch here yet but I've had lunch and dinner here. I've had the mushroom and quinoa burger, enlightened caesar salad, straight A salad, chili and chocolate glazed salmon. I enjoyed all of the items I've had here (liked not loved), but I think it's a great option since I can keep trying different things with a mix of healthy and satisfying options. The pancakes were really good, but way too sweet - so sweet that I kinda got sick of it after my first pancake. It would've been great for dessert. It was also a little too burnt for my liking.. for some of the edge bites, the burnt taste overpowered the lemon. We also got the side of hash browns though which was really really good!!! I've read that one of the must try dishes here is the lemon pancakes that I got. I would have to disagree - I think I would've enjoyed some of the other foods a lot more! I'm really glad my local friend brought us here for brunch! First, we were so difficult with changing the reservation time (not once, but twice) and the number of people, and a few of us arrived much later than the others, but it didn't phase the waitstaff. To help cure my hangover, I ordered the green juice... a super healthy-sounding concoction that was actually really delicious. As for my main, I ended up going with the waitress's favorite dish, the quinoa cakes with poached eggs. This was superb. The quinoa cakes did not fall apart easily, and the eggs were poached to perfection. The tomato sauce and the greens helped to make this a very flavorful dish. It was filling but did not make me feel grossly full. Of note: two of my friends ordered the egg white omelet, which seemed rather boring to me but actually looked really good. It was loaded with avocado and colorful cherry tomatoes, and it came with strips of turkey bacon on top. Finally, one of my friends asked the waitress to bring us all our own separate checks.
