STAY AWAY. Ruined my daughters hair color the day before her high school graduation. She asked for her material hair color (light brown). To cover grown out highlights. She was there for 4 hours! When they washed out the color, part of her hair was dark brown, parts of it was black. They didn't let her see in the mirror, kept her turned away so she could not see. ' oh, some of it is too dark, We can fix it '. Well they didn't fix anything. Dried her hair part way. And then , the owner, Susan said ' you are done, I have other clients waiting'. I don't usually think much of Aveda salons, and this salon was no better. My haircut was fine, but it took forever, and the "scalp massage" they promised pre-cut was lackluster. I will give them credit for being able to fit me in that day, but that's about all the credit they get. My stylist was SO SLOW and didn't do a great job -- I won't be going back. The scalp massage lady was uninterested in being there, and it led to some neck pain and wasted time. I would've just as soon done without it. I also felt like the Aveda products dried out my hair, which isn't what you expect when you're spending $50 on a haircut (sure, cheaper than most places up here, but not what I'm used to spending for such bad service). When I walked in a few months later to get a complimentary bang trim (I don't get frequent hair cuts, just bang trims, which are usually free at other salons even with my infrequent cuts), they were short with me and wanted to charge me $10. No thanks, B.T., I can cut them myself. In the future, I'd rather drive to Bella Bethesda and take advantage of their excellent hair products, polite and knowledgeable staff, and discounts galore. I recently had my hair cut and colored by Victoria, and she was awesome. I brought in pictures of the cuts I liked and also showed her pictures of somewhat similar cuts that I didn't like, to help her get a feel for exactly what I was going for. My cut and color both came out great, and Victoria gave me a fantastic, smooth and bouncy blow-out. I also really liked her personality and she was fun to chat with. This is an Aveda salon in a strip mall. It's pretty nice but it's definitely not über-fancy. The staff is friendly and I'm always offered a drink while I'm there. read more

When I was there, there was only one other person getting their hair done. Joni cut and styled my hair and I am very happy with her. This should be more of a 2.5, maybe? I don't know. Sorry if this gets long. So, I went here because it is an Aveda Salon. I lived in Colorado for about 5 years, and loved their salons there. Always got a great cut with exceptional service. I had been going somewhere else, but that lady left. I hadn't had a haircut in over a year. First, about my hair. It was about to the bottom of my shoulder blades. Very, very thick, and a bit coarse. They ask for this information when you book, and they charge extra for long and/or thick hair. I had a pretty blunt long bang last cut, and it had grown out and looked terrible. The ends of my hair were dead and fried; overall in bad shape. But, this was the longest that my hair has been in over a decade, and I wanted to keep it that way. I went in on a Friday, late morning. Was not busy at all. The shop is small, but clean. I was offered the usual water, coffee, tea, that Aveda is known for. The lady at the desk was pleasant. My stylist came right away and was cheerful. It started with what I wanted, and I told her very clearly that I wanted to keep the length in the back, and no more than a half inch, *maybe* and inch at the most. I told her she could do whatever with the front face frame to clean it up, and I knew more length would have to be taken from there, as it was pretty bad. We went over the dead ends in the back, and I explained that I knew, but I was growing it out and didn't want anything more than an inch. Next I was given a scalp, neck and shoulder massage with aromatherapy. That was lovely. Moved for a wash, with the massage (my favorite part). Back to the chair and she got to it. I honestly wasn't paying attention to what she was doing, and I'm not the talkative type. Plus, I couldn't see what she was doing in the back, anyway. The whole thing took a bit over an hour. I did not feel as if she was rushing at all. When she got done with the styling and blow-drying, it looked WAY too short for just an inch off the length. But, she used product and spray, and she puffed up the roots, so I thought that it looked so dramatically short because of this. I got home and brushed it out, but it didn't improve much. I waited a day, took a shower and blow dried it straight. I took a picture and compared it to one from about a week before the cut. At least 4-5 inches was gone. I was (and am) somewhat heart broken. Again, I had been growing it out for well over a year. The only reason I got it cut was because I have a special even coming up, and didn't want the dead, frizzy stuff in the front. Overall, it's hair, and it will grow back. They have a $20 off coupon on their site for first time customers, so the whole thing cost me $25. Would I go back and pay the full $45? Maybe, I'm not sure. If so, I would be much more forceful about what I wanted. Its a clean cut, she took her time, and was focused. She just didn't do what I wanted, and its going to take six months to grow back what she cut off. read more

First time with a facial with Bella. She's new to Beau Totale, not sure how new. I haven't had a facial since right before COVID shut everything down. Bella had me so relaxed, I was able to get a nap in. If I'm relaxed enough to fall asleep, the esthetician is good at massaging and making you comfortable. I am ashamed to state that I have been a regular "client" at Beau Totale for 3 years, for when you read on, you will question my judgment in remaining a client for so long despite wrongful treatment. During the 3 years, they have screwed up my appointments 4 times, the latest of which sent me over the edge. No apologies, nothing. I demanded a phone call from the owner, Susan, who never bothered to contact me. Juan was ok, never cut too much off, and since he has left, I've seen Sue 3 times. She is like a bulldog pushing Aveda products - when I say "no thank you," she keeps pushing for reasons why not. Too bad, it is a nice small Aveda salon close by to my home and work - I wanted to give the owner feedback for improving the appointment booking process... But no more. I don't mind paying more for consistent and reliable appointment scheduling systems or for peace to be left alone and not bullied into buying products that I do not need or want. read more

Upon moving to the area a few months ago I was happy to learn that there was an Aveda salon convenient to my home and work. I choose Aveda salons because (for me) their products are much gentler on my hair, skin, and body. My curly hair is thinning due to medical issues so I was looking for a stylist who could give me a decent cut and help me learn how to style my hair. Victoria (one of their premier junior stylists) gave me a great hair cut...and really took the time to tell me what products to use and show me how to use them....I seriously couldn't be happier. It's hard to lose your hair (especially in your 20s...) and it really was great to find someone who knew what they were doing and could help me with a style :) I will say that I was here for a while...an hour or so. It isn't a quick salon experience...so go when you have a little time. I've also gone to see their esthetician...Sara. She does a fantastic job with waxing services. Just fantastic. She very much takes care and time with your skin. She's great. I've only received waxing services, but based on what I've heard others say...I may try out a facial as well. I don't write reviews, but I have been a client of Susan's, the owner of Beau Totale, for years and my experiences have been nothing but exemplary. The salon is chic, Aveda-friendly, is clean, and the staff is always pleasant. I have always looked forward to going there and now I make excuses just to drop by if for no other reason than to say hi. It's that kind of place to me. I am always greeted with a smile and a hug. Yes, there is a story here. I am a pretty easygoing client, but one that always wants to change my hair. Always. Susan provides much needed guidance when I go too far and she has always been right. Even when I disagree and she does what I want, that is a testament to her professionalism and her desire to make her client happy. Being an artist is hard enough - and that is how I view hairstylists, their canvas is just very diverse - but when you have to paint a picture of something you aren't a fan of takes patience, kindness, and tact. Susan has all three of these attributes and is a serious artist who knows her craft well. Susan cares. She really does. I grew my hair out and we were both (amazingly) happy with it. I had the best hairstyle I can remember and we had a lot of fun with it. Then I was diagnosed with cancer and, as with all chemo and radiation patients, you think that hair loss won't happen to you. Guess again. My hair started falling out in chunks to where I looked like I actually was pulling it out of my head. I obviously had to do something and I was not going to shave my own head. I can't even paint my own nails, but I kick ass in the corporate world. Apologies, I digress. Susan drove 24 miles on her day off after hours so that no clients would there while she shaved what was left of my hair. No tears, but plenty of hugs and laughter. She even brought me two of her wigs to wear during my journey. This is who she is and I will always be in awe of her kindness and generosity. I made it through chemo and was scheduled for surgery. Of course she showed up to show her support, give me a hug, and say a few prayers. They worked. After 10 months of treatment I am currently cancer-free and Susan was with me throughout my journey, either in spirit or via text. Or when I showed up at the salon just to say hi, because it's that kind of place and, even though she was busy she would take a moment to share a hug and ask me how I was doing. Now I have told you what kind of person she is, please know that she and her entire staff are, in my opinion, consummate professionals in every way and I would happily have anyone on Susan's team take care of me. They all take pride in what they do and I think that if you haven't made a visit there yet, you might want to give it a try. Chances are you will be as big a fan as I am. Thank you, Susan. For being there and for being you. Keep kicking butt and taking names. I will always be here for you and thank you for everything you have done for me this past year. read more

I highly recommend Beau Totale. I've seen Joni Morgan for years, and she is fantastic. She is very attentive to my requests. The protocols they have in place for Coronavirus made me feel very comfortable while getting my hair done (temperature check, hand sanitizing as soon as you come in the door, 6 feet or more between patrons, all staff and patrons wearing masks, sanitizing stations between patrons). I had Sue and gave her a picture of a style I liked. She copied it exactly (I have never had that happen before) and I walked out looking like the model in the picture. I'm very sad to have to write this review. I wanted to like Beau Totale, unfortunately, two issues prompted me to write this review and not return. I used both the hair and facial services at Beau Totale. HAIR: I booked a next day appointment with a stylist who had Saturday availability. I have pretty simple hair and am not picky -- just needed a trim for straight, below the shoulder length hair. I don't even remember my stylists name. What I do remember is that I felt like I was getting a hair cut at one of those discount "beauty school" places yet I got charged full, expert stylist price. The stylist used a heavy "bib" with guidelines for cutting hair straight. It was ridiculous--especially to be charged a premium rate. FACIAL: I really liked my facials and technician and started seeing her monthly for hour long facials. My problem, and what ultimately prompted this overall review, is that when I arrived for my last appointment I was told she no longer worked there. I'm sorry what? I received a text message from Beau Totale on Thursday confirming my appointment on Saturday. I replied, confirming that I was coming. The girl at the desk said they called me, except when I listened to the message it was a vague message that I interpreted as a sales call, not an appointment cancellation. I asked to speak to a manager. She said there was no one there, but that someone would call. Guess what. No one called. I felt like my time was wasted and I was not respected as a customer. I give her a photo of a style I like and she considers my face, my hairline, the thickness, and my cowlicks and she gives me a great cut. She does the same for my son. Terrible experience today! I am from Minnesota, home of Aveda and I have used many, many Aveda salons around the world (yes, even in foreign countries I have sought and found Aveda salons). I have always had a top-notch experience in a top-notch setting, until today. I chose Beau Totale ONLY because it's an Aveda salon, which I guess was my first mistake. They were able to give me a Saturday appointment when I called the Thursday before--so kudos for that. I do appreciate them squeezing me in last minute. When the receptionist asked what I needed to do, I told her I needed a cut and color. She asked if I needed partial highlights or full color...I know I should know these things after coloring my hair for 20+ years, but I forget the difference. Told her highlights, asked for an approximate cost, was told $120. Fine, great. Show up on Saturday. Stylist proceeds to go over my hair and starts to tell me how crappy my last stylist was and criticizes her the whole time (even after I explain that she is a FRIEND of mine, not to mention a talented stylist who works at an upscale salon in McLean--I just happen to not have the time to run to McLean anymore, thus I was at Beau Totale). Everything my FRIEND did was wrong, color was wrong, method was wrong. We're talking about a highly trained Paul Mitchell stylist here...I had no complaints. Turned out I needed a full foil according to new stylist..and right away, I could tell she was irritated, like I had purposely lied. Is it possible that I'm the first person that has ever walked in NOT knowing what I needed exactly? I doubt it. She proceeded to mix up all the colors I was going to need to fix the horrifying job my (licensed, professional) friend had done. Now, I'm rather a tall lady (5'9") and she was rather petite, so when it came time to do the color, I was moved to the back area into a different chair so she could reach my head. I had to hold my neck and head in different, often uncomfortable positions so that she could reach my head. I explained to her that I have a neck injury, but it just didn't seem to make a difference. I had to stop her a couple of times so that I could stretch my neck out. It was painful and it was laughed off--next time, she said she'd wear her high heels so she could reach my head more easily. I have NEVER had to be in physical pain while getting my hair done! Besides this, she's putting the color on as quickly as she can and slapping the foils shut and tight against my head...I mean, she may as well have had a sign that said "ANNOYED!!!" blinking over her head. I just shut my eyes and my mouth and tried to relax...I mean, what can one do when one's hair is in full foils? Cut is OK, color is OK. Will my neck be OK? I hope so! Will my wallet be OK? My wallet hurts as it was twice as much as was quoted--I understand some of that, but DOUBLE the cost? $260 with tip (I'm such a chump). That is just outrageous for a stylist with a crappy attitude in a salon that frankly needs a good scrub-down and someone who politely asks their clients NOT to bring their kids to appointments (nothing like listening to someone else's kid screaming during what is supposed to be a relaxing, kid-free appointment, am I right?). I can't visit my friend in McLean anymore, but I'll be headed back to W Salon next. I had high hopes for Beau Totale. They are a Totale Disappointment!! read more
