My hair braider introduced me to this store. It has become my go to spot when in need of hair extensions, oils, gels, etc. They carry a good variety of products. Majority of the time I find what I'm looking for. I also like there selections of lipgloss and lipsticks. Prices are reasonable. Customer Service is great and helpful. I highly recommend this place for these items. read more

The store has a limited selection and isn't the most visually appealing, but the staff and manager have always been courteous. When you enter, they greet you, ask if you need help, and thank you for your service. Despite its shortcomings, the store provides a welcoming atmosphere, where customers are sure to feel appreciated.Sometimes they offer good discounts as well. Great personalized service. I'm a minority (black) and welcomed not being followed around as I shopped. I'm allowed to shop in peace. Periodically I'm checked on an asked if I need help. On one visit when I was medically unable to move around the cashier helped me to find things. Recently I was on a hunt for new wigs and the manager patiently assisted me as I tried on multiple styles. I found their wig selection better fit my tastes than their larger competition across the street. PROS - Owner is Super Friendly & helpful. The staff isn't always helpful :( - Great wig selection!!! - You don't get followed around, but the owner will ask if you need help. - They carry JBCO. I normally order it from Amazon, nice to know a local place carries it. - Wide selection of hair products in a small space. - The Wigs that I like are cheaper than the local competition. Great selection for my tastes. - 7 times out of 10 I'll find packs of hair (for braids or crochet) that I couldn't find at the 4 local competitors (Little River Turnpike, Picket Street, & Competition across the street) - Budget friendly wigs - Holiday sales - Military discount - Great location, they are right next to Pep Boys, the Dollar Store, Ross Dress for less, Popeyes & a new Hibachi restaurant - Ample parking CONS (out of their control) - Not easily visible unless you know it's location - Extremely Tight space (not conducive for a wheel chair) - Deep curb dip at the red light. I just moved to Alexandria from Brooklyn, NY where there's an abundance of hair products for natural hair and I've only searched a bit for products because I already had a supply with me when I moved. Then, disaster struck. I ran out!!! This ratty head of mine was suffering for lack of my new favorite Dark and Lovely LOC products and I refused to just use something that I knew was just okay on my hair. I almost ordered the products (LOC Dark and Lovely) online last night, but it was gonna take a WEEK for them to arrive. No way was I going another day with my hair looking like this. So, I set out to find them. They had to be SOMEWHERE in all of the DC Metro. I went to KC Beauty and they have NO LOVE for natural hair with the sparse selection of products they had available. I was almost discouraged because they have such good ratings and I wasn't sure if anybody else would love natural hair as much as many beauty supply shops in Brooklyn and Harlem! I drove a little further up Richmond Hwy and noticed a small sign for Beauty Island and figured I'd give it a shot. My eyes grew as big as saucers when I found my products!!! There were only a couple available, and I almost bought both, but in the spirit of sisterhood, I figured I'd do somebody else in ny position a favor and I left one. The salesman was really nice and even gave me 10% off and said he'd be sure to reorder! They now have a customer for life! Urging all black people don't shop here. The owner follows blacks around like they are stealing. She didn't even want to me to sit in chair saying she was busy and had customers. ONLY thing is there was not any customers in the store needing help. DONT THINK SHE LIKE BLACKS. There is another beauty supply store about 2 blocks away with better products and better customers service. Mostly importantly they welcome BLACKS customers. I will never shop here again. read more

This beauty supply has too much stiff competition in the area to provide the service that they do. (There's a much better BSS directly across the street with better pricing, selection and customer service). Older woman working there was very rude (gave me a little cheap nylon wig cap and said that the cap is free if you buy a wig, if not then it's $1...I wasn't in the market for a wig and she disappeared into the back to watch movies on her iPad, so as I wandered to the other side of the store to look around she eventually found me and demanded her wig cap back haha). Prices for products can have up to a 50% markup and it turned me off from making any kind of purchase here and I left to go across the street (where I found the products that I needed at a reasonable cost). I like this beauty supply. I have been going here ever since I moved to Virginia. This is one of the only beauty supply stores that has products for African Americans, from cosmetics to a great selection of weaving and braiding hair. They are really helpful as well. read more

This was a horrible experience. The Manager onsite is horrible and rude. One of the salespeople made a mistake and placed the wrong hair in my bag and I did not notice it until I got home. When I called the Manager was rude from the beginning and lied about the individual leaving and he not knowing anything about it. After about three phone calls the calls ended with him calling me a Bi*^H and using all other obscene language. The prices here are good but the service is horrible and it is topped off with a level of arrongance that makes shopping here a horrible experience. I will definately start shopping elsewhere. I will follow up and say the sales person that assisted me did eventually call me back and personally apologize for the mistake; however, the lack of the Manager's integrity overshadowed her follow up. This is not the first time I have observed this Manager's attitude and wrath towards customers; however, it is my first and last time experiencing it first hand. The individual claims to be the owner's nephew and his attitude reflect that of entitlement. He is always short tempered and please don't ask him any question he will fly off the handle at any moment at anyone. read more

I usually go to KC Beauty Mart, but come here every now and then. The owner follows you around the store as if you are going to steal. I wanted to buy a quick up do drawstring ponytail, and could not see the color through the bags, so I unsnapped the package to look at it. The only cashier that she has, immediately comes up to me to tell me I can't take the hair all the way out the package, so I told her that I wasn't. I continued looking and now the owner runs up to me to say I can't open it 2x. Well if can't see the hair, and you're rude about it, I will take my money else where. Why not have another ponytail for display next to the hair like most beauty supply stores have. I will continue to go to my favorite store where everyone is nice and treats you with respect, KC Beauty! read more

My experience here was horrible. I would not recommend this place to ANYONE!!! the so called "Manager" is the owners son and very rude and condescending to customers. Further, the guy does not know the slightest about customer service and thinks hes insured because his parents own the store. Another factor that makes this a horrible experience is the lack of quality of the hair products at this store, they may have sales, but you probably would have to replace the hair in a few weeks because of the low quality. To sum it all up, this place is a SCAM i tried to exchange hair products i purchased and i wasn't allowed to because of some flimsy excuse of they cannot resell the hair because there was a little opening in the net. I did not even open the pack at my place and the only time it was opened was by the manager, so i was penalized for his mistake. I had an annoying experience in the store. A woman who claimed to be the owner of the store has a very poor customer relationship. She is rude, discriminating, and insultive. I was feeling a piece of the hair I wanted to buy from the opening on the pack, the woman came to me and said they don't allow that, I either buy it or leave it. I had no problem with that, but what annoyed me was she took the hair from me and walked away to attend to another customer. I went to her and asked her if she was ready to attend to me, she said I should meet her at the cash register that nobody was there. When I got to the place, she neglected me and attended to other customers, so I had to leave. For benefit of doubt, I walked into the store the next day, after attending to me ,I told her that her service to me the previous day was poor. Instead of accepting or apologising, she asked me if I came to buy hair or to make complaint. I explained to her that she's still showing the same poor customer relationship. She said that I should either buy the hair or drop it and leave, that she is the owner of the store and doesn't want my type. I reminded her that she is in America, she should change her mindset and treat her customers politely. She became very loud and said that I should leave and not come to the store again, that she is the owner of the store and can throw me out. When I went to the cash register for check out, the cashier was apologising to me but the same woman came up and said she should not apologise to me, she should let me pay and get out of the store. read more

Had bad experience with older lady ( she is very rude ) upon entering the store the older lady approach and I ask to see clip on weaves. First she told me of the color and didn't she me the hair. I asked to see it up close so that I could make a decision. It was expensive and my hairdresser asked to see and receive the same treatment. We then proceeded to the weaved hair to be sewn in. My hairdresser, my son, and me picked up a pack of hair to buy and I unsnap it to get a better look at the color. The older comes and snatched the pack of hair my hand and says do not open the hair and tries to put it back on the shelf. I asked her why she snatch it out of my hand and told her give it back to me. I took it off the shelf got weave net 2 curved needles and some hair as reinforcement. (She followed us around the store) Paid the cashier and left. If it hadn't been Sunday afternoon I would have gone somewhere else. read more

I gave this business zero stars. I always have a bad experience when I shop there. The owner follows me around the store and thinks I'm trying to steal something. She is rude and loud, and they have poor customer service. One time I purchased an item I didn't need, and she refused to exchange it. I didn't know they had a no refund policy, the lease she could have done was exchange it. Everytime I go here I am yet reminded why I don't like to shop here...The older lady that works there is extremely RUDE, every single time. This last time I went, I only stopped in because I was right there, and was in a hurry to get home. I picked up hair gel, which all of them that size was sitting at the $2.99 price, when I cashed out it said 4.59 I went back to look to see if maybe I had made a mistake, she came over and said THAT"S THE PRICE!! I said well it must be in the wrong spot, yelling she said yeah wrong spot wrong spot...so I looked over at the larger one that sat at the $4.89 spot (should have been $5.99) and I said I imagine those are in the wrong spot too, she said YEAH ALL OF IT WRONG SPOT, ok well if i'm the customer I don't know if this is the wrong spot, right spot, everything should be sitting in the correct spot, who has time to figure out whether or not somebody did their job and put things where they go. I understand customers may place things in the wrong spot, but EVERYTHING was out of order, seems decitful if you ask me, because the average person, if buying multiple things will not notice they're paying the wrong price for something, only if you're buy 1 or 2 things you'll notice if something rings up incorrectly.. Her tone is always RUDE, and YELLING, and she basically calls you a lie when you tell her something...needless to say i'll continue to shop across the street, where I always end up after my mulitple bad expierences in this establishment read more
