Booked an appt for a blow out for my friends wedding. I was visiting from out of town and had never been here before, but Tamiya CRUSHED IT with my hair! She instantly knew what I needed and used amazing products that made my thick, coarse curly hair smooth, shiny, and soft. The look held up through a two day wedding where I danced my ass off, and still looks good on day 4. I never want to wash this off!!! The salon itself was very cute and spacious as well. I love the stylists and atmosphere at Beauty Lounge. They are incredibly kind and knowledgeable about all types of hair. Erica has done my hair for years. She prioritizes hair health and takes a holistic client approach. My daughter has long thick hair and is tender headed. She used to have anxiety getting her hair done, but the stylists at Beauty Lounge are gentle and patient with her. Ky can get her hair looking lovely in 2 hours with no pain. The beauty lounge is a foundation in the Minneapolis community. This place offers a multicultural experience for all kinds of hair. All their stylists are able to work with all textures, and this is what I appreciate. This is a black owned business. Being a black woman in Minneapolis, it can be difficult trying to find a place to get my hair done. The beauty lounge has always been a safe bet for me. I would recommend this salon. Everyone has excellent expertise. My favorite stylists are Lawrina Gaye and Tamiyah Thomas. But you can pretty much trust anyone here. They also offer styling classes. Great interior and awesome music. You can buy their products as well! It also has a nail salon! I haven't tried this yet but if it's as good as the salon. I can recommend it! read more

I had a traditional sew in about two weeks ago. Melissa did my hair and was very kind and I enjoyed talking with her. As per salon policy I had an in person consultation a week prior to receiving the service. I had been very excited but was ultimately disappointed. At the end of the service the hair wasn't styled and the leave out wasn't blended. It looked bulky whether the hair was up or down. I spent about $300 (not even including hair) and ended up taking it out after about two weeks of wearing hats and headscarves every day because it looked so bad. I think she may have just been in a rush because I saw her working on a client when I came in for my appointment, not take a break after and go straight to me, and did the same thing jumping to another client as I was leaving. I also remember being surprised by how quickly she was done. The other thing I'll say is there was someone there who asked to film me for social media content. I said yes but wished I hadn't. She set up the camera right towards my face which I wasn't expecting, and once I already had my coat on to leave stopped me to take more videos and then was excessively touching my hair and really taking her time with the whole thing. I get that it's her job and I could've said no which is on me, it was all done a bit intrusively in my opinion and I wish it hadn't happened. They are very kind people and I have a lot of respect for Melissa and her business which is why I went back and forth about leaving this review, but for the amount I spent it should've looked better. I spent over $600 on a hairstyle that looked so bad my self confidence took a hit. The only reason I didn't take it out sooner is because I spent so much. read more

I read good reviews about this salon and decided to give it a try as I cannot find a good hair salon in Grand Forks, ND. I was in Minneapolis for my boys birthday weekend and Tamiya gave me a silk press (my first) and I was so happy with how it turned out :) I could not stop flipping my hair lol. I have never been able to achieve a wash and go on my coily hair. Melissa helped me achieve the style and 3 days later and my curls are still luscious. I'm also happy that I got a trim and did not have to put heat on my hair to do so. I dig my new haircut and had a great experience with my stylist, Dre. As my first time at this saloon, I had a tough time finding it. It's located on the first floor of a complex housing mostly art studios. It's not well labeled. The interior is gorgeous with vintage furniture, wood floors and exposed structure. Just got my hair darkened for the fall yesterday. Melissa put the color on my roots first for 10 minutes and then used a semi-permanent dye for the rest of my hair as I wanted to keep some of my hair from when it was lightened. It turned out great! You can clearly see some of my previous lighter hair and the semi-permanent added great dimension. I'm very pleased with my color. There was a bit of dye on my face but it's hard to avoid. Next up will be a trim in a few weeks or so. read more

I am so bummed to have to leave this review. I had my hair colored by Melissa on Monday 6/17. I had a pleasant experience chatting with her, exchanging stories about our kids, she was very receptive and helpful with what I wanted my hair to look like. The vibe of the salon was easy going and relaxed. Overall the process took about two hours which is expected. When I got home however I noticed my edges were not touched with color and still grey. Upon further inspection there is more noticeable clusters of hair throughout that was not touched by color. Keeping in mind how much I otherwise enjoyed my experience, I sent her an email the same afternoon asking what we could do to remedy the situation. I sent another follow up email this morning and unfortunately have yet to receive a reply. When I attempt to call there is only an option to leave a message. I also submitted a note via their website "contact us" section in hopes they would respond to that. But no one has reached out. I'm a hard working single mother and spending $145+ for a subpar hair job is really frustrating and almost brings me to tears. I just wanted to do something nice for myself and I can't help but feel so disappointed in the lack of response and their disregard for my experience. read more

I have curly hair and was looking for a "hair home." At a friend's recommendation, I tried Natalie at the Beauty Lounge. While I was not thrilled with my first two hair cuts, I understand that it can take a bit to get the hair just right when working with a new client. And, I appreciated the fact that Natalie seemed to listen to my concerns and make adjustments accordingly. My third time seeing Natalie, she made some minor adjustments to a recent cut (a service for which I tipped her.) During this ten minute appointment, I was pleasantly surprised when Natalie dry-cut my hair (like many Deva trained stylists do.) I was pleased with the cut and thought that Natalie and I had finally hit our stride. I had found my "hair home". However, last week I emailed the Beauty Lounge to schedule a hair cut. Two days later, I received this reply: "Natalie will no longer be able to service you. She informed me that she made some recommendations to other stylist. We wish you all the best. Beauty Lounge Team" What?!? I was stunned. Apparently, I as a customer, not to mention a human being, didn't even merit an explanation. All I got was an impersonal note from god-knows who. Evidently, Natalie couldn't be bothered to at least email me herself. And, she did NOT make recommendations. During my second hair cut she mentioned a friend of hers at The Hive who works with curly hair... I make it a point to support local businesses. However, if this is how this business operates, they don't deserve support. I know several of my friends who will no longer be going to the B.L. due to my experience. The stylist was nice, a little aloof though and also kept adding on service that did not only not make sense for my appointment but cost extra in the end. My stylist would ask me the same questions two or three times during my appointment, as if she had completely forgot we already discussed something. For example, "so do you have any big plan tonight" came up at three different points. I would have been more than fine with this, but what I was really upset by is her strong urge that I get a special conditioning treatment. I told the stylist that my hair was already VERY silky to begin with and I didn't think I needed a treatment. She proceeded to tell me she would use the one for silky hair? (I agreed to be accommodating for her). Fast forward one week later and my hair STILL feels greasy on top due to this treatment. I get out of the shower and it feels like I need to jump back in to wash it out some more.The treatments are various add ons led to an additional $55 to my appoint. She didn't care about my hair or my needs, only that she would be able to ring up a few more services on the bill. Will not be going back, wish them luck! read more

I set an appointment to have my hair colored. When I get there the stylist, Jai, basically says that she's no longer coloring hair for new clients without a consultation first - which includes actually doing the client's hair. She didn't feel comfortable doing a new client's hair without knowing the actual condition of the hair. She's working on a way to integrate that idea into the website. Obviously it wasn't listed on the website as a stipulation for first time clients nor did they attempt to contact me about it first (I booked weeks in advance.) If I wanted my hair styled and deep conditioned, that's the option I would have selected. She also said that she had gotten many complaints from clients about the color and it not being maintained properly. Folks not coming back for their one month follow ups or every 2 months trim. She certainly made it seem like once she colors your hair, you're just supposed to be her regular client. Overall I was disappointed because I didn't get my hair colored. Even if I sat through her consultation, my hair would have not been colored that day. If coloring was the goal, I didn't see the point of actually getting my hair done (wasting extra money) only to go back and get it colored (money) There should have been a better system in place. Had she tried to reach out to me prior to my appointment (phone call, text, or email - they had access to that info), I definitely would have found someone else in those two weeks. It was a waste of 30 minutes. Also I did ask if someone else was available. She said that Stephanie was willing to do it, if as a new client, I'd be willing to pay an extra $25 for a deep condition so she'd feel comfortable. Clearly these ladies were trying to make extra money off of new clients. It was ridiculous, unprofessional, and I left without getting any work done. read more

Based on the reviews of this "salon" and recommendations from friends in the area, I came to the beauty lounge for a root touch up for my highlights and a want to go a little lighter on my base color. I'd had a bad experience with my previous stylist in LA :( Right away I got a bad vibe from the stylist, Jay. Instead of FOILING my hair with the usual weave technique, she painted straight bleach all over my roots and scalp, claiming that this would be the "best way" to tackle my wants. I trusted she knew what she was doing, but I was wrong. Lo and behold she leaves the bleach on too long and I start feeling massive pain and stinging. She washes the bleach and my hair pulled all different colors (obviously) of copper and bronze, it was HORRIFIC. Instead of tone my hair or color it or SOMETHING she looks at the clock, and right away I think " what?? she's going to let me leave like this?!" She gives me some bs about "color correction" and coming in another time to fix the issue, after she consults with a professional salon (?!). I was livid. I went to a REAL professional salon the next day and find out her "technique" fried my hair, agitated my scalp, and was done out of SHEER LAZINESS and no knowledge of hair. Best part? She charged me $115 claiming it was a "full foil". Stay away from this place! Save your time and money and go to a real salon!! read more

Travis cut my hair for the first time today. He listened to what I wanted, but also offered helpful suggestions. The amount of care and time (an hour and 15 minutes!) he took in cutting my hair showed his passion for his work. He also styled it with gorgeous curls.
