Another customer came in, said he didn't have an appointment but could they fit him in? The stylist, now at the checkout, said sure, right away, and took him back to her station. I felt disrespected, ignored and treated badly. I went to the stylist's station, said I had an appointment, and then left the store. It's too late for an apology, and I don't want one anyway. I am going to have to get plastic surgery to remove the scar on my face that I got from the abscess from Fantastic Sams using unsanitary tools. This is something that's included in the price of the haircut. I asked her to take 1" off the back. She said, "I just tidied it up, I didn't take 1" off." I've never encountered anything like that before. So, don't be surprised if they ask you what you want them to do and they just go ahead and do whatever they want. Dishonest, amateurish, and unprofessional. I paid the patently ridiculous price of $200 to have my paper-thin, just-below-shoulder-length hair dyed Grandma Gray (instead of platinum blonde), in an under-two-hour session at a middle-grade salon. I wish I would have done my research and seen this salons two-star rating before I dropped a huge amount of cash to have my hair messed up. What is even worse is that the salon refused my request for a partial refund. They said they don't issue refunds now, or ever. They offered to "fix" my hair, but why would I want the same Salon that overcharged me and then messed up my hair, to touch it? The manager of the store was initially hostile to my complaint and even imply that I was lying about certain things. I was not. Went in for a haircut and brow wax, decided to get a partial foil. Paid over $300 for the services. That's not a typo. The hair cut/brows cost $70 because I added a shampoo treatment. Then the foils cost $220 before tip. This is outrageous! Make sure you get pricing up front if you go. I usually pay $180 altogether. Fantastic Sam's - like what the actual fuck is this - Hair Salons Near Me - St. Louis Park, Minnesota

I recently visited this particular Fantastic Sams in St.Louis Park and couldn't believe that I would be frustrated to the point that I actually take time out to write this review. I was hoping that this place would be similar to the other Fantastic Sams which I frequently visit in Hopkins (opp. Knollwood Mall), Edina (on York Ave) and Hopkins Downtown (Main street). However, I was in for a surprise right from the moment I entered. I really didn't pay much attention looking for their pricing board and the place was fairly free so I immediately got seated for haircut. The hairstylist was extremely chatty [non-stop] (which I personally do not appreciate) and she was constantly trying to find faults with my hair and suggesting one product/service after the other. I somehow managed to evade all her offerings and kept her service limited to just a haircut. (which was probably my only win after going to this place!) After the haircut, when I head to the counter to pay I was surprised with the bill amount for the haircut being $18.99; which is like 25% over the cost that I generally pay at any of the Fantastic Sams location mentioned earlier. Only at this moment, I start looking for the price-listing board, which to my surprise was non existant. It was almost like every morning they just randomly decide on a price to charge the customers! I happened to have a loyalty coupon from Fantastic Sams for $4 off, which she immediately disregarded by simply saying that we do not honor/accept any of the Fantastic Sams coupons. Which I found very strange considering that I was standing in a Fantastic Sams location. When I checked with her on the price being higher than the other Fantastic Sams, she informs me that the owner decides the price. Wow! Additionally, I was in need for one of the hair products which again I had to pay full price, as they didn't accept any Fantastic Sams coupon (I had a 20% off coupon from them in my mail). So end of the day I walked away feeling ripped-off, as this is not the value and service which I usually expect/get from a Fantastic Sams. And when I get home I get even more frustrated, when I notice that the hairstylist has done an incomplete job on my side-burns; which I had to fix personally at home. If only she had focussed more on her job to cut my hair, instead of constantly trying to see what product/service she can push onto me! I am never going to go to this place again and would recommend you to go to any alternate Fantastic Sams locations which are like 3 miles away and offer way better service for a fraction of the price. In my mind they should not brand/call themselves as Fantastic Sams, as there was nothing that made me feel that I was in a Fantastic Sams. Imagine going to a McDonalds or a Burger King and ordering a cheeseburger and the bill you get matches that of a steakhouse fine-dining restaurant. Would you pay the extra price for the same (or slightly worse) service/product? Especially, if the explanation given to you is that 'Sorry sir, our owner decides the rate we charge'. Oh boy, I feel like I'm breaking the mold with this one! I've never had a bad experience at this Fantastic Sams, so when I was doing my hair this morning, I thought: I should write a review. Just last week, I got a hair cut and color touch up, and wanted the chance to give a shout out to the awesome stylist who did my hair. So, first things first: Mary is an awesome stylist! With an even more awesome memory. I wandered in last week, after having been here on and off for 3 years. I was only going to get a cut, but my roots were extremely grown out, and some highlights I had seriously needed toning. All in all, I had the "New mom, no idea how to juggle all of this plus my hair" thing going on. Anyways, Mary has done my hair before: I think four or five times total, but I could be wrong (again, my memory in that respect is horrible). She remembered me, remembered that the last time I was in, I was pregnant, and was extremely friendly about my options for touching up my hair on a budget since I have a new, little head of hair to worry about (and financially sustain). After reading the other reviews left for this location, I wanted to try and keep it real for others who might be reading this: Fantastic Sams really pushes their stylists to up-sell. I can tell that's a big sore spot for some people, and I understand that 100%. It's understandable to only want a hair cut, and not walk out having spent an arm and leg on hair gels, sprays or waxing services. I've spent my fare share of impulse money on hair creams and serums, and some I wasn't happy with; others have become a staple in my hair care routine. Every time I've ever come here, I've been up-sold on something, and it might be fair to say that the methods some stylists use to up-sell could even borderline aggressive. I docked one star for that. I would have done 5 stars, but I get how that could be an issue and even though I budget for impulse spending like that, not everyone does. Beyond that, the salon is clean and has an atmosphere unlike any other Fantastic Sams. It dosent feel like a corporate, empty turn 'em type of joint. Mary, in particular has always made pleasant conversation and always takes my input into consideration. This most recent visit, she grabbed a book and went through hair styles she thought I might be trying to achieve. Eventually, we settled on one and she fixed me right up. When it came to my roots, she laid out two options: Go all over color, or, touch up and tone. She priced both out for me, was courteous of my budget, and we went from there. I left feeling amazing! Over all, I always recommend this location for a quick cut. Others experiences clearly differ from mine. There's a tanning salon and coffee shop next door too, so you can make a pampering day of it with all the saved money (or, spend it on hair products, whatever float your boat!). I have seen Kelly twice before and was satisfied with the dye job she did, so today I returned to have my roots touched up and my hair cut into a new style. I was very disappointed with the result. The cut was MUCH shorter in the back than I wanted (I even showed her a picture twice) and it was UNEVEN! I had to return to the salon to have it fixed and blended, as it looked choppy in the back. Unfortunately, it still looks uneven in the back and that's because the dye job is uneven. It's so obvious even my husband can tell, which is pretty bad if he can notice it. I am VERY disappointed, and I tried to fill out a form on the website stating my issue but it wouldn't go through and is now telling me I cannot submit anything. Typically I don't write reviews. This fantastic sams already has so many bad reviews, I just felt the need to warn everyone. I am putting in synthetic dreads and needed to have my hair in corn rows to do so. Since I was unable to do the corn rows myself I decided to go here to get them done. Once I arrived I stated that I would like 6 rows. Gracie, the "stylist," "counted" out 6 rows. The finished product was far from what we had discussed. I now have 9 rows, with one horizontal on the too of my head. The entire back was skipped. I was told that my dreads will "cover" it up but if it doesnt, I can come back to get it fixed. When I got home, I attempted to put the dreads in. They were entirely too tight to do so. At this point I just wanted my money back but was told that they do not refund services. They told me they were going to call me back and have yet to do so. Do not go here, they will not give you what you want, they will not take responsibility for their actions and you will be left with a hair cut/style that you didn't think was possible. read more

I would not advise going to the Fantastic Sam salons in St. Louis Park. There are two: One on Excelsior Boulevard in Miracle Mile and the other on Cedar Lake Road. I have been to both because they were near where I live and I could get in right away. (Yeah, that should be a sign: When you can get into a salon immediately for a color, they probably suck.) They brag that they all have master colorists. I am wondering if they get their degrees out of gumball machines. Here's why: The first time I got a color my roots ended up flaming orange. To their credit, they fixed it immediately because I was in tears. I am a professional and the rainbow-hair look will not fly in my workplace, thank you very much. The second time I got it colored they did a fine job and assured me they would write down the formula. The third time I got it colored, the stylist insisted she followed the formula to a "T" but now I am a brunette. There is absolutely no red. I noticed it when I left the salon, but let it go because my father just passed the day before, I had his funeral to attend and didn't have time for a recolor. Furthermore, I thought, "Well, at least my hair isn't orange." I just didn't want to risk a rainbow-hair disaster. When I called them to get a recolor after the funeral, they said they would get me in no problem. Thank God I called them back to switch the times. Turns out I would have had to pay! They offered to recolor my hair for $50, with a $15 gift certificate for a future service. Uh, yeah, like I want to go back there! When I pay $100 for a hair color, a simple red, I should not have to hold my breath about the outcome and I shouldn't have to pay when they make me a dark brunette when I requested red. Especially when a so-called "master colorist" is doing the work! Never, ever go here. In retrospect, I should have driven the 30 miles to the salon near my work place, The Villager Salon in New Brighton, where they give me perfect color for $60 including tip. I could have saved myself a lot of time and money. Lesson learned and I hope you learn from my mistake!!! read more

Basically everything that the other review mentioned.. happened to me. I was told about 8 times how horrible and damaged and coarse, and porous my hair was. Really? Ya think? I heard you the first time. The hair stylist then put a ton of product in my hair and mentioned how I should do my hair another way than the way I do it now, because it would look better. I did not ask for her opinion. She also mentioned that I need to change my hair color because my current color doesn't suit my skin tone. I didn't ask for her advice. I just wanted my $10 trim. She then tried to push about $60 worth of product on my "damaged" hair-- are you serious? I will be skipping FS from now on and going to a place that actually knows hair and doesn't insult the clients over and over and over again. By the time I left, I felt pretty shitty about myself. DO NOT TRUST THIS SALON WITH YOUR HAIR! I have been a client of Fantastic Sams locations on Cedar Lake Road and the one on Excelsior Blvd. for years. These two locations are owned by the same person. I have personally spent thousands of dollars at these salons. In addition I referred my mom, daughters and several friends. I requested a partial cool blonde foil and left with MUSH due to the bleach being left in my hair for nearly an hour! To top it off, it's not noticeably blonder and I'm $160 poorer for nothing. I went into both locations (Cedar Lake Road and Excelsior Blvd) of this owners salons, spoke to two different managers. Both agreed that my hair was damaged and offered to pay PART of a treatment to fix it. It would cost me an addition $25! I requested a call from the owner, she didn't even have the decency to call me, and she had a 3rd manager (Linda) call me.... every one of them told me "they don't give refunds" nor will they give me a credit. IN A NUT SHELL, IF YOU DO NOT GET THE SERVICE YOU PAY FOR AND EXPECT OR WORST YOUR HAIR IS RUINED LIKE MINE...GOOD LUCK, YOU'RE ON YOUR OWN. THIS OWNER DOES NOT STAND BY HER EMPLOYEES WORK! Update: I contacted the MN. Attorney General. Fantastic Sams has received notice that they must contact me within a week, they haven't!!! I asked to have my dry ends trimmed and the stylist said "so you want to take 2" off"? Um no, I just want the ends trimmed. She continued to tell me what a terrible state my hair was in and that she would have to cut 2" off... OR... I could add on a special conditioning treatment ($$$). I declined and she kept pushing it. She then tried to sell me an eyebrow wax (which I also do not need or want). She then tried to sell me products. The stylist not only cut off nearly all of my beautiful long hair when I asked for just 3 inches off, she also charged me $75 for a treatment that she never communicated with me about. When I finally was given the opportunity to speak to a manager about it after about an hour of her and everyone in the store trying avoid the situation, she was so rude, insensitive, and unaccomidating to me that she brought me to tears and still refused to do anything for me. I went with some reservations but I really need to cover up some grays. Walked in and got a warm welcome. My stylist quickly assessed what I was looking for a provided a quote. I dispensed with the post treatment but agree to a quick trim. She chose a good color and after 15 min under the dryer and wash, the color turned out to be rather nice. I'd go back. The trim could have been a bit more thorough. I had asked to basically clean things up, but she was so extra careful, I'm not sure there was much of a trim at all. I might have been more specific, but I walked away thinking a little more time with my light layers or face frame would have been nice. I think I'll pass next time. read more

(thanks- i love being told i have a lot of shitty hair) "I've never seen so much gray hair on someone so young" (like i dont fucking see it every day in the mirror) "You have so many split ends, how long has it been since youve gotten your hair cut" (ah, 6 weeks- thanks) "You must be a swimmer with this kind of chlorine damage (hmm, uh, no, never in a pool, but thanks) "We are going to have to charge you for two colorings since we had to use two treatments (hmm, isnt that like charging an obese person twice for the same plane ticket?) I went to the above listed location originally wanting a haircut, which per advertisements was to be 14.99. The stylist asked if I have ever colored my hair or considered doing any color treatments. I had not colored my hair in quite some time but was open to suggestions. The stylist than suggested highlights, I was hesitant to this but still open to her suggestions as I had now heard three separate times that she has been doing hair for over 14 years, leading me to trust her suggestions and abilities. I signed the menu sheet that had the 14.99 haircut, 82.99 for the highlights and additional charge of 24.99. She didn't explain anything on the menu card, proceeded to cross most of it out stating "this is just about hair, sign here." As I was attempting to read what she was trying to get me to sign. While doing my hair, she refilled various bowls but assured me that she had been doing this for so long she was using as little as possible and making it look so good. When she would leave to the back to get refills; she would come back with the smell of smoke lingering on her and a mint in her mouth. Not informing me of any extra charges being accrued. While making small talk during this three hour process, she asked where I worked. When I mentioned that I worked in the healthcare industry she proceeded to tell me about her chronic back pain and how the people who need pain pills can't get them. That often she would have to 'make up' stories at urgent care clinics of new symptoms to get the 'pills' she needed for her back pain. This continued various times through the remainder of my experience at the salon. Including her assuring me she is not a 'crazy person," and that "you can clearly tell that." Being that I work in the healthcare industry, or anyone with morals honestly I was outraged that a stranger would tell me this, let alone while performing a service on me that at this point I have very little control over. When she was washing my hair she said she would change the 'hair diaper' as she referred to the cape as it was now soaked making my shirt underneath wet. This did not happen, and it was not until she took it off when we were done that she remembered when it was clearly obvious my shirt beneath was wet. It was now 9:00 PM, there was myself, the stylist working with me, and one other stylist. As we walked up to the counter to pay she suggested products to me. She completely talked me out of the Fantastic Sam's products and to the most expensive Redkin product. The diamond series I believe it was called and the largest bottle available. Knowing that I agreed to the 82.99, 14.99 and 24.99 which were more than I intended to spend and she was very persistent on the Redkin products, I agreed to color extend in the red bottle, wanting to get the smaller bottle to try it out. She then informed me with my hair type I would go through that size bottle so quickly I should get the larger bottle. I have never been told that before about 'my hair' type but it was now almost 9:15 I wanted to get home and thought I would splurge. She asked if I wanted pumps for the products I just bought, I asked if I needed them, she said it would make it easier in the shower and I would only need one squeeze on the pump. Not once did she mention this was also an additional charge of 3.50 per pump. She informed me that my total was 302.58 I nearly fell over. I could not believe that the 122.97 of services that I agreed, signed and dated; manifested into 302.98 with no mention of any additional charges. She had raved about how long she had been doing this so I assumed her quote for the services would be accurate, and that if she did need to add additional charges that she would have made me aware of this, or that my all around experience was not a three hour ordeal complete with inappropriate drug references, complaints about back pain, the smell of smoke, a wet back, disappointing hair style, and feeling completed overcharged for the disgusting display of unprofessionalism that I received. After speaking to managers and finally the store owner I was offered a 50.00 gift card, not asked what could be done to make my experience better. DON'T GO HERE!! I brought my daughters here a few times now and I will never return again!!!! Every time I'm told how awful their hair is, that they need some treatment, and we need all new product. We jokingly walked into the salon betting each other how many treatments and how much new product they were going to push at us today. It's not funny anymore. The stylists get crabby because we don't get the extra stuff and I swear they cut my daughter's hair too short intentionally. We will never be back to any fantastic Sam's in SLP. I got my haircut here in the last month and the prices are insane. For a haircut and beard trim it was over $40 and the entire face wasn't even shaved off because I wanted the hair on my neck gone. On top of that, whoever did my hair with the long pink fingernails after I paid and turned around to leave I heard laughs by her and the other lady working there. I can't confirm it was me they were laughing at but the fact I was wearing red nail polish and I'm a guy makes me skeptical that that's what they were laughing at. If that's the case and I know they'd never admit to it then that's messed up because employees should be respectful of those who pay them. I got a hair cut from Ashley and she told me she's the best stylist so that's why she charges more for her services. She told me she learned her skills on youtube. There is something wrong with this situation. She should be trained by experts in the field. She butchered my cut and it looks awful. I have never written a negative review for a service, but this truly warrants it. The disrespect by not only the stylist but management as well (Ashley and Alyssa) was beyond anything I've ever seen. I went in last night and asked for a specific style that I showed the stylist several pictures of. Ashley (the stylist) then went on to do her own thing and gave me a completely different hair color than I requested. I spent over $300.00 at the salon. When I left I was nervous and tired and upset, so I said I liked it. I went back in this morning and asked them to add more highlights, at which point they disputed that it didn't look like the pictures, said I would have to pay MORE for the service (mind you I'm in $300.00 already) and then the manager implied I was being ridiculous and laughed in my face when I said I would be reporting this interaction. Our family has been a few times thinking something would change, we were wrong. On a positive, they do a pretty good job with hair cuts. The down side that they don't care about customers. They will rob you blind if you don't watch yourself. They try and flirt and ware tight pants, in order to distract and rip you off. When you fight them, they say they are master stylist. Our last visit: my 10 year old was getting a 14.99 trim, upon completion his bill was just under $50.00. Googled what a haircut was at Fantastic Sam's and read it was $15. Called and asked if there were any discounts available for seniors.. Yes they said, $3 off on Mondays and Tuesdays - 9am till 2pm. Got my haircut, went to pay and was told the cut was $18.99. I questioned it, referring to what I read online. I was told each Fantastic Sam's was individually owned and they set the prices. It's obvious they use this tactic all the time, because she had a well rehearsed answer just waiting to spew out. Never saw a price list for their "services" either.. I then asked what about the senior discount? She said she was sorry but you have to get there between 9am and 2pm Monday or Tuesday. I looked at the the clock above the register, then she looked at the clock and said "Oh".. Dear gawd.. I have seen a bag of hammers smarter and more professional than this person. On top of it all, when I got home I looked closer at the haircut.. it really sucked.. looked like it was trimmed using a machete.. I am never going back and will tell others if they ask to avoid like the plague. read more

The stylist overall did a fairly nice job on my hair, but it was not the haircut I asked for or discussed with her. We agreed on a trim, but then I was surprised to find my hair much shorter! The cut was well done, but I was very disappointed that it was NOT what I asked for... Furthermore, the experience was just unpleasant. It's pretty awkward to keep turning down different services and products offered by the stylist (hair coloring, hair treatment services, hair syrums, etc.). I just want a trim, not a series of sales pitches! Finally, I brought in a coupon that specifically listed the Cedar Lake Fantastic Sam's as a participating location, but they did not accept the coupon. Not the end of the world, but it seems kind of strange... I will definitely NOT return to Fantastic Sam's. I wish I had gone somewhere else. read more

I usually love Fantastic Sams but will NEVER go to this one again. Went in to get my hair dyed black and she ended up bleaching it and said "don't worry, sometimes it takes a while to make your hair go lighter" I wanted darker, not lighter. It's been about a year since this happened and my hair is STILL messed up from having to tone it so much. I will never step foot in here again and let all my friends know the same. read more

They don't accept coupons. I was told it was a managers decision. From reading others reviews it sounds like a poorly run operation that needs cash. I paid more for a kids haircut here than full price for an adult cut elsewhere. I certainly won't be back. Whoever is trying to run the place may want to think more about repeat customers than over charging single customers. Next time the kid needs a cut it'll happen At the Great Clips down the street. read more
