I have walked by this shop almost daily on my way to work, but never had occasion to pop in until recently. I was greeted nicely enough by a gentleman who sat slightly obscured behind a stack of... things. The whole store was full of ..... things. The store had everything from "vintage" stuff to random junky stuff that just looked... used. The displays made it really difficult to walk around. Keep in mind that 80% of the reviews here are from when this was "Beaux Arts Video," a video rental store. It has since become a "vintage" shop - which is just a kind way of saying a junk store. The guy who runs the place is crotchety and unreasonable. I came in recently and noticed that he was selling a t-shirt for an obscure band that I happened to know some of the musicians in. (He wants $20 for it, btw. Even my friends who were in the band agreed that was too much.) Anyway, I mentioned this to him and he was kind of a prick about it. Then I noticed there was a sign up that said VHS tapes - that's right, VIDEO tapes - were 10 for $10, OR individually they were 50% off the tagged price. There was a random Star Trek movie, and it was marked $16 on the bottom. So basically if had to either pay $8 for this video that would be 50 cents at Goodwill or Philly AIDS Thrift*, or pay $2 more and pick out 9 other VHS tapes I didn't want. This policy makes no sense, like...at all. I tried looking around and everything was just so overpriced I gave up. (I inquired about one cat print sheet that was there - he wanted $20 for that too.) * - I literally bought this same Star Trek VHS tape at AIDS Thrift later that day for 50 cents. Bottom line - not worth your time and definitely NOT worth the money. read more

The shop is cootie. Cootie, as in filthy, unclean, unkempt. Everything available for sale are things YOU can find early in the morning at several of the working class flea junk markets that the city is blessed with on the weekends. You buy something out on the town for two dollars, mark it here at $60. On a thorough tour of the place, I found ONE thing that I would have in my home, perhaps in the guest room, but I wouldn't pay the silly price by a long shot. The owner puts items on the street to make you aware that the place is open, but the material so displayed are the type of items no one would ever steal, and much of it the type of things that Thrift For AIDS puts in the freebie bins outside their Queen Village store. There is a huge rotting, badly painted, childish, garish sign you can see from a block away on plywood that is falling apart... for years. Some old synthetic Christmas tree, VERY tall, leaning at an angle against the sign and the front of the building... for years. Wind blown trash builds up around all of it and no one has class enough to sweep or hose down the sidewalks, ever. The upstairs tenants have to walk by this mess, every time they come and go. The businesses on the other corners are unhappy, because this badly used tschatschke shop brings the look of the whole intersection down. How any landlord allows this is beyond me. Philly has great weekend flea markets, every weekend, that are full of life and fun to visit and shop. Go there with friends, instead. read more

This is the second best rental store in store in Philadelphia. But considering that the first best is TLA and they're 3 stores strong in the city take that for what you will. As far as staff and selection I do like Beaux Arts a lot better. their staff is a little more knowledgeable and they make better staff picks. the selection is more or less the same as TLA (at least for G to NC-17 ratings), only you rarely come across a film that is out of stock. The only real flaw to the place is rental prices. $4 for a new release, and $3 for an old movie, and both are two day rentals. for this day and age, and the era of Net Flicks that's a little steep. But it does feel good supporting the other guy to the point that it can be worth it once in awhile. read more

I've been here twice. Two different men have been working here, and they were both very nice and very helpful. There is a set of chairs. I think I might need them for my balcony. I can't stop thinking about them, hahaha. Today, I was on a quest for a lamp. I asked questions about a couple of pieces and then he found the most fabulous lamp hiding amongst the kitchenware. 60s spaghetti glass. SO cool. And I got a pretty good deal on it too. read more

What a sad metamorphosis-- from awesome independant neighborhood video store, to hybrid video/greeting card/random stuff store, to junk store, to closed. I will miss spending hours idly chatting with neighborhood weirdos. I will miss having my own staff shelf despite never working there. I will miss the bizarre signs made by employees, and then the even more bizarre signs made by the owners. Does anyone know where the new hangout spot is now that the video store is closed? Rana? 4 out of 5 stars only for the lack of organization and the disappointing cult section (mostly camp, but it is the gayborhood, so i forgive you) Seriously though, this place is fantastic. Plus it's on my way home from work, and the people that work there are great! I had to rent Suspiria and the Breakfast Club for two separate events I helped out with and they had them! And it was only 3 dollars! Plus the staff selections are pretty great. read more

Like TLA Video, this video store is independently owned and arranges their rentals in a more referential way than simply breaking them down by genre. They have excellent staff picks as well as directorial collections. Their focus is on international and independent cinema. They also have Hollywood titles but they do not dominate the store the way they do in Blockbuster. Beaux Arts has a less adult-vido feel than TLA, which is nice and doesn't make you feel like an old perv. read more

While the store does offer a selection of DVDs and viewable media, the name is somewhat misleading. As I've read in other reviews, it has gone through various reincarnations, and the one upon which I happened the most recently confused me. After scanning the items displayed outside the store, I walked inside and was greeted mostly by kitchenware. It all appeared to be organized in that sense in the front of the store, but to me there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the back of the store. I spotted one wall (not even; maybe a half a wall) of DVDs, more kitchenware, and some posters. At least somewhere like Philly AIDS Thrift they have each section clearly labeled, but this store doesn't. For their sake, and for that of current and future shoppers, I just hope they solve their identity crisis. read more

Back when I used to live right around the corner from it, I was a regular at Beaux Arts. It always made me think of the movie Clerks for some reason, probably the slightly smirking attitude of the staff and the snarky notes taped up around the crowded little store. Though some might be put off by these things, I loved it mainly because it was Not Blockbuster. Plus, they always sent me home with the perfect movie, even if it wasn't what I came in looking for. From arthouse flicks to foreign films, Beaux Arts expanded my cinematic universe and for that I give them two thumbs up. read more

Beaux Arts Vintage is a standout for me as far as local shops go. I try not to buy new furniture and contribute to the mass production of stuff in this world. The owner, Tom and I have become friends over the years as I've furnished my apartment. I highly recommend stopping by whenever you're in the neighborhood to see what new treasures Tom has picked up! read more

This place is pretty cool. Real laid back. It's nice to pop in and get a movie to watch. I guess netflix is really popular now but still if you want to get a DVD on any given night. It beats blockbuster because it's independent, less expensive, the kids that work there are cool and also it's never crowded. Check it out if you're looking for a video store. read more
