Super friendly staff and legitimately a hole in the wall that takes "treasure hunting" to the next level. It looks sketchy at first but I found so many great items at amazing prices. Forget the other places with the overpriced items, this place IS IT. Affordable and very friendly employees, had great conversations with them! The clothing manager was super cute, she's an older lady but she was rocking the chairs while waiting for us to try on things so she can put them back onto the rack. I honestly and selfishly hope this place doesn't get famous but alas here I am writing this review. Would visit again. read more

This is a great option for local thrifting that is not one of the thrift "corporations" we all know. I have found great items here at reasonable rates, especially on their given tag days. I have to say, shopping this past Black Friday was terrific and I cleaned up nicely with items between $1-2 that would have ordinarily cost twice as much. I sometimes forget about this store, as I have a few other area thrifts stores I go to, but you can find nice things here if you browse well. read more

Like another review mentioned, this place gives old-school thrift store vibes: home-y and not profits-driven. Clothing prices were about the same as Goodwill/Salvation Army ($4-9 for most adult clothing items), with some higher value items (coats and jackets) in the $25-80 range. Also factor in: they offer 1/2 off a color tag every weekday. A lot of their inventory--men's, women's, and children's--felt picked over to me, and I struggled to find anything I liked...Very few vintage pieces, unfortunately. Lo and behold, I settled on a single mini fork to add to my collection. Cashier was friendly and efficient. Fork was only 27 cents. I'll have to visit in a month or two when their inventory has turned over enough, hopefully. read more

I've found lots of cute things at great prices! You definitely have to be thorough of course like at every store but there is some great pieces and a good variety for women's clothes. The staff has always been kind and chatty. You do have to leave bags and drinks at the front in cubbies but one staff member let me take my backpack with me while I shopped because I had my laptop in there. read more

Like any thrift store, Second Mile isn't good for everything but it's good for some things. If I'm looking for kitchen items or home goods, I often have good luck. If I'm looking for men's clothes, I less likely to have success. My only complaint is that, years ago, they used to have LOTS of cool electronics, tools, garden supplies, and other stuff like that and it seems like that's no longer a priority. From my own experiences trying to donate things here, they've become very choosy and turn away a lot of stuff so I end up making a trip to Second Mile and then a second trip to the south Philly Re-Store anytime I'm getting rid of stuff. read more

I shop at the Second Mile Center about once a month for my thrifting needs. They're a great little shop in West Philly that has a selection similar to some big box thrift stores, less pretension than some other thrift stores in Philly and prices are far and away better than anywhere else. I can and do return regularly. Pros: Selection is solid. They rotate and move stock quickly, especially clothing. Hard goods, bric-a-brack and other items move a bit slower and are in the back. Furniture really seems to rotate quickly and they'll hold for a few days and even deliver (for a fee). Sales are plentiful. Currently, they're back on colored tag sales like Goodwill, but they also do major discounts on Saturdays or other holidays of up to 70% off, which make some real bargains. Typically, it's just clothing or bric-a-brack but sometimes it's the whole store (rarely including furniture). Folks are friendly, and shoppers during regular days are nice. Sometimes during big sales, things can get hectic. The service staff is excellent and really great to deal with. Cons: Organization of clothes is a little suspect. I don't look in women's clothes, but the men's clothes are vaguely at best organized by size. Fortunately, it's not organized by color like some other thrift shops (which is useless IMHO). It's definitely on the lower rung of cleanliness. It's a thrift store - that's common, but this store hasn't been fully cleaned in forever. Waiting and Lines to check-out can be slow at times. Off-peak is preferred, but sometimes with sales it can't be avoided. Other notes: As long as you're in line by a certain time, they'll give you the sales discount for your order. Management is really good about that! Conclusion: I think it's one of the best places for thrift sales in the City. I can and do return regularly. read more

Every time I walk by, I have to take a few minutes to browse the shop. It's close by, has cheap options, and is usually promoting a sale or discount day! I've found cool sweaters before all the hipsters come and find them, I see nice chairs and couches, and the plates, toys, and knick knacks are all in good condition. They take donations daily until 6pm at the green door. For how cheap the clothes are, I'm glad that the store is kept well and has a pleasant feeling to it in general. I've been to thrift and second-hand shops that were downright gross, but this is the exception. While it has consolidated and doesn't have as much space as the Philly AIDS Thrift to keep many items, they have just enough room to get you a few options on couches, coats, so many shoes, and some things you didn't even know you needed. I've been to a lot of legit and semi legit thrift stores in my day. But Second Mile Center is the real deal treasure trove of thrift stores. after all it's not just one store front - It's four of them. One handles clothing, one handles toys and trinkets, another handles electronics, and the final one across the street hooks up your random furniture needs. I felt the need to hit up ther clothes area for some steals, and it was an interesting experience. I found a lot of items that appeared to be must owns, only to find out that they were double extra large in size, or had a few unwanted stains and tears. but in the end I pulled out a swank looking pair of khaki's and a sweet looking sweater for less than $8. and thats the way thrift shopping should be! Sure it could be better organized. you definitely will pull out a couple scary and questionable items that you could do without seeing. but if those things got fixed than you'd probably be complaining about things like a price increase. As for me I think I'll take it exactly as it is. read more

I came to the Second Mile in hopes of scoring some possible hidden vintage gems. No such luck. This store is great if you're in the market for used $7 clothes from Forever 21 and other poorly made mall-quality clothing stores. Then, I walked out the door and lying on the curb was a giant pile of gorgeous vintage hats from the '50s, one still in the original and beautiful hat box. The man loading donations was a sweetheart and helped me track down a price. I got a pile of hats for only $20. Sadly though, the woman was extremely careless when ringing me up and pretty much ripped the hat box in half (I almost died on the spot). So, overall, one big "meh" for Second Mile. The selection isn't great- have to do lots of digging to find a gem! Most of the clothing is from stores like Aeropostale, Talbots, Forever21, and GAP, with some older Hollister, abercrombie, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic. Most clothing items cost $3-5, but jackets are around $10. That being said, they have frequent and substantial sales. Call ahead or walk past the store to check out upcoming sales: frequently 60% off furniture when you pay cash, 50% all items on select Saturdays, and 15% student discounts on Wednesdays. read more

This wonderfully organized place is full of hidden treasures- during our first trip there, we scored this super cute pair of Jordan's! We've gotten a lot of home decor and items to upcycle here. The prices are cheap because it's not one of those bougie boutique thrift stores, and you can get enough glassware to stock up your entire kitchen for about 15 bucks. Went to the second mile center for some bedroom furniture and was not disappointed. I purchased a gorgeous wooden dresser and nightstand in mint condition for an unbeatable price. They have the option to hold the furniture for later pickup or they can deliver it (both for an extremely reasonable fee). The staff are friendly and helpful. I've shopped in the store plenty of times. It's really a hit or miss kind of place but I gave two stars. Today I came in your store and one of your employees was clearly watching me. I have come into the store a couple of times and have purchased things. I thought it happened before but shrugged it off (same woman) but this time it was clear that she was watching me. I'm not saying that this was a race thing but I suspect so. I looked at her looking at me. I decided not to say anything. I just thought to myself what a shame I can't shop in here anymore. If you're the type of person that only wears one color clothing, say, blue clothing, this might be your favorite thrift store ever. You can just walk in, and look at the rack, and hey those are all blue clothes right there. For people that look for clothes based on size, like myself, it's a little less useful, although still aesthetically pleasing to have clothes sorted by color on the racks. However! This is a great thrift store. I had mostly given up on thrift stores in Philadelphia after going to Philly Aids (which was only so-so) and the hideous Goodwill at 21st and Market. The Second Mile has renewed my faith. If you're on the medium - to plus scale you'll find a LOT of great clothes, if you're not... the pickin's can get slim. Probably because it's been picked clean by skinny hipsters. Anyway, what I really like about it is that, although they don't have a dressing room, they have a *return policy* which is kind of novel for a thrift store. You can buy clothes that look promising, take 'em home and try them on and then return them for store credit by the next day. Lather, rinse, repeat. I found more than a few nice shirts on my first trip for chump change ($1-2) (2 of which I'm going to return tomorrow). The bookstore. The bookstore! It's amazing. I almost frothed at the mouth. I found a chemical engineering textbook, 2 books on finite mathematics and "The Belly of Paris" by Emile Zola (this one was actually in excellent condition) all for a dollar or two each. This must be where all the goodhearted academics drop their books when they go to heaven (or move somewhere else). read more

It seems I cannot go in this store and get exactly what I seek, ever. One day I went in to get an iron. I had a job interview. No irons were to be found. Distressed, I wore a shirt with no obvious wrinkles. When seeking a jacket, all I can find is a cardigan. When seeking a cardigan, all I can find is a Melvins t-shirt. That said, this magical inverse world makes this my favorite aimless place on Earth. 50-70% of my wardrobe comes off the racks here. Many of these items are magical beyond words - the cardigan I bought instead of the jacket has been highly praised as "the ugliest fucking sweater I've ever seen" by a former coworker who seemed eternally clad in Rolling Stones t-shirts and a whiskey hangover. To the casual observer, these are not heaping praises. But in my corner of the universe, this is the place where dreams are both made and go to die, right next to a hideous brown suit coat. read more

When I run out of clean clothes and don't have money or time for the laundromat, I head over to my extended walk-in closet: The Second Mile. Where else can I stop in for 5 minutes and grab a new shirt for $1.45 on my way home? You won't always find something great, but you can usually find something serviceable. Like others have said, it pays to visit frequently if you live in the neighborhood and especially to look out for 50% off days (once a month or so usually on Saturdays or holidays). I love the idiosyncratic pricing ($2.92 for a pair of sneakers, $10.01 for a jacket) and the bizarre signs at the furniture store. 4 stars if you're in the neighborhood, 3 stars if you have to make a trip there. read more

It's sad. When I first moved to Philly almost 10 years ago, this was the best thrift store around! I got a Marc Jacobs suit for $5, and loads of vintage Lacoste and women's sundresses and boots. It was... amazing! Then, all of a sudden, it sucked. I have found nothing here my past 4 visits. And, in a store that's a big as this one, that's really unfortunate. The prices are high, the clothing is not great. Whenever I see a nice vintage piece, the price is just astronomical. And, I know why too... So, there are 4 buildings. One for furniture, one for clothing, one for electronics & books & music, and one for everything else. The "everything else" store used to be my go to destination for vintage jewelry. And, I got to talking to the guy who oversees the pricing one day. He said that someone had donated an original Tiffany's desk set, and it was currently on Ebay. In the course of the conversation, I deduced that this is one of those thrift stores. You know... the ones that put all the good donations on line, or consult Ebay for prices. That's why everything half-way decent is so atrociously priced. Because, they go by online prices. Which any buyer knows is ridiculous. I'm not saying that there aren't bargains to be had. But, the chance of you coming away with an awesome find is unlikely. That's all I can say. read more

This is essentially a strip of thrift stores owned by a single owner and all named "The Second Mile ____". It includes a used furniture store, clothing, electronics, walkers, toys, etc. I've mostly explored the clothing aspects of Second Mile. Basically, if you're into cheap thrift store clothes then definitely come here. They have a decent selection, the prices are cheap, and the clothing is usually in good condition. You're best bet is to come here often if you want to get real finds. Sometimes you'll go there and find some amazing deals on great stuff. Other times you'll go there and it will be rather generic and you might not leave with anything. That's kind of how thrift stores work though, right? The only downside: they don't have a fitting room. read more

This mecca on 45th between Walnut & Locust is a thrifter/bargain hunter's paradise. From old electronics to books to furniture to clothing, they've got it all. Like any thrift store, if you're impatient, or expecting perfect pieces like those in the windows of Retrospect on South Street...don't bother. This is definitely the kind of place where you've really got to dig through the racks. But patience usually pays off, as many of my favorite pieces in my wardrobe have come out of my findings. I have put together several outfits for work (and been complimented on them!) - the selection of women's blazers is top notch. I've never paid more than $10 for an article of clothing. There's a decent selection of shoes and handbags as well. Keep your eyes peeled for flyers in the window - at least one Saturday a month, all clothes are 50% off. read more

The Second Mile is so much a part of my daily life and existence than I don't know how to translate it into starts. How many stars do you give the air you breath, you know? Like, sometimes it's got some ozone issues or smells funny, but damned in that moment if the air isn't still 5 stars. Because you need it. So... I drop in multiple times a week. Usually after work or when I've taken too long getting out of bed on a Saturday. I don't stay long, generally, just take a swing around both sides of the store to scope out the goods. Usually junk, meh, or curiosities (subtly racist decorative rum/tiki bottles apparently were a thing as late as the 80s...? Who buys someone else's used shampoo for 91 cents?). But when it's NOT junk, it's amazing. I've gotten beautiful Eileen Fisher linen pants and shirts. Genuine Hasbeens clogs. Countless unbranded but really cool silk and linen shirts and skirts. I have gotten away with murder when it comes to high end kitchen equipment: over the years, the Second Mile has sold me my Kitchen Aid (Hobart era ;)) stand mixer, a 5 qt. Cuisinart Food Processor, a very fancy Kuhn Rikon pessure cooker, my beloved Atlas Mercato pasta maker, cast iron pans galore, several Nordicware pans... mphmn. And yeah, I've gotten the tchotchkes too. Wind chimes. Questionably framed needlepoint. More cordial glasses than drinks of cordial I've ever drunk. Trays for keys and chicken wire. Whole shopping bags of Christmas ornaments-- probably have bad juju 'cause they're likely from a divorce. I feel real warmth towards the Second Mile-- the people, the crappy (and evidently dangerous for children?) building, the festively-named indoor trees they got from an estate sale somewhere that aren't for sale, the guy who looks like Snoop, the sometimes laughably high or shockingly low pricing. Ms. V (I believe she's a manager) jokes that I come in for retail therapy but ya know. That's not far off the mark. read more

This place is full of a lot of junk. If you sift through, you might find something worth your while. And, if you do, you will get it dirt cheap. But to be honest, most items in here I would not touch. They are just not in good shape. I don't blame them. They rely on donations and the money goes to charity. So, why not take what they can and fill the store. If you have time to waste, it doesn't hurt. You never know when you might get lucky. read more

Second Mile is big (but not as big as it used to be -- they used to have a store with clothing and misc, one with housewares, and a store front for furniture across the street, and now they've closed the one for furniture and moved all of the furniture to the back of the clothing and misc store). They also have frequent sales for 50% certain types of merchandise, e.g. women's clothes, accessories, kitchen stuff (as others have said, holiday weekends are the best time to look for a sale). They always have a lot to browse and they restock a lot, so there are plenty of new things to see, even if you go frequently. But they're not a great thrift store, and they're not even as good as they were 4-5 years ago. They have always lacked dressing rooms, which is annoying (if you find out that it doesn't fit after you get home, you can bring it back within 24 hours, but only for store credit). Pricing is wildly inconsistent and has gone up substantially over the past few years. They put some really lousy stuff out on the floor, so there's a lot of crap you need to sort through in order to get to the good items, and good stuff disappears more quickly (it used to be pretty easy to leave something on the shelf and decide the next day whether it was worth going back for...no longer). Often, there simply are no good items. Look carefully for underarm stains, holes, etc before you buy! Their signature method of organization will also slow you down: clothing is arranged by color, not size! I keep going back to Second Mile because they're an easy walk from other places I like to go in the area (Saad's!), and because I still find a very good deal on occasion. But now that prices are higher and overall quality is lower, I tend to wait for a sale to wander in. read more

THIS IS NOT A SAFE PLACE TO TAKE CHILDREN. I was shopping with my kids today and didn't notice that all through out the clothing section, right UNDER the clothing racks AND IN FRONT OF THE DRESSING MIRRORS are super heated hot pipes sticking out and completely uncovered for anyone to brush up against. I was holding my 1 year old and put her down to grab a dress and she tootles over about 2 steps from me and grabs one of these hot pipes and burns her hand. There was no sign or warnings or anything up letting people know these exposed pipes are hot and I can't figure out for the life of me why they are not covered. I told the manager and he acted so none nonchalant Like it was not a big deal. I will never ever return to this place and I've already filed a complaint with city code enforcement. read more

The Second Mile Center is a series of second hand stores on one block. They sell everything under the sun, and they have the space to do it. I'm sure there's an interesting story here as to how they acquired so many properties, but that's a story I have yet to learn. Today, they are well-organized and very reasonably priced. Here you can buy electronics, furniture, luggage, housewares, and of course clothing. The clothing store is especially huge, but it's not so overwhelming because all the offerings are spaced out in aisles and aisles of racks. The property is a big square with a very high ceiling, so it feels spacious, which is nice. When it comes to quantity, Second Mile takes first prize. When it comes to quality, Second Mile is much lower on the thrift store list. They have a lot of junk in my humble opinion; however, as the owner of Toviah Thrift told me last year, just because I wouldn't buy something doesn't mean that nobody would. There certainly do exist thrifters who aren't concerned with trends, and I'm sure Second Mile gets plenty of those shoppers. While Second Mile has a lot of low quality items, it also has its share of gems. The ratio of crap to gems here is the same ratio as at Toviah Thrift; Second Mile is just a much larger, more organized property. Like TT, SM also had some religious affiliation. Definitely stop by--they have everything under the sun and it's all oh-so-wallet-friendly. Racks and racks of shoes, dresses, blazers, handbags, AND this place has sales from time to time. A thrift store holding a clearance sale? Yes, they do. Once my mom and I came here on Xmas eve and they entire inventory was being sold at half off. Pretty crazy. This block is positively magical when the weather is warm. Tons of trees, lovely Victorians in the area, not too much traffic. With the SM folks on the block, it's the type of place where you'd want to sit down and just chill for a while. There's just something about South 45th Street. When you visit, cross the street to visit the used furniture store with furniture that talks to you. Someone here tags the items with papers that - well, talk to you! Sometimes it's a story, sometimes it's general commentary, sometimes it's a snazzy one-liner. Even if you have no need for gorgeous vintage items that could never fit in your apt, come visit them to see what they have to say. read more

I've only visited once and loved my experience. Friendly, professional staff. It's definitely one of those thrift shops you have to plan for. I went in on a Saturday where everything was 50% off. I purchased 4 pieces of clothing and a red angora hat which all came to $6.00. You are bound to find some good finds, if you're willing to search. It's definitely worth it. Cons: The merchandise wasn't sized which was a pain in the a**. The furniture is over priced for the condition it's in. (Sole reason for rating) Other than that go check it out for yourself! Just walked 5 blocks with a bunch of clothing to donate only for a very rude worker to turn down my donation. Apparently donations are not accepted after 6 pm. There is a sign but that isn't very helpful once I already walked there. I guess looking up the store hours weren't enough. I really wanted to like this place. Mainly because it's in a pretty area, and a good place to visit after digesting your Saad's (okay, I really need to stop gushing about that place). There are several separate "stores" for Second Mile, and the first one I visited was the smallest and had mostly women's clothing. Unfortunately, because women's sizing sucks, I absolutely need to try on pants before I buy them and these stores don't have changing rooms (what?! I mean, why not?) I thought I might have more luck in the big clothing store, but nope. Found a few cute sweaters and the BEST CARDIGAN EVER, but alas, the sleeves were too short on that, and the sweaters were either too tight, too short, too baggy, too stretched-out...and these were all apparently the same size. They did have nice purses, but I didn't need to add any others to my 2435345+ collection. That said, I'll probably be going here again just to see if my luck changes. I'd give it 3 stars, but the no dressing room policy is really a deal-breaker for me and my hatred of illogical women's sizing. read more

I had a great experience the first time. Tonight was freakishly awful. They close at 8. I understand wrapping up five minutes early. But at 7:42 (I checked), two staff members informed me that I had to stop what I was doing immediately and pay. I asked if I could take five minutes to look at clearance. This is a wonderful local thrift store that is open fairly late on weekdays, 8pm. They have frequent 50% off sales, especially on holiday weekends, and with already low prices you can't beat it! Now for the downside- no dressing rooms! That's a slight "yikes! " for me. This is still a great place to shop around in- be prepared to even spend over an hour browsing the large selection of clothes. And for the friend who tags along but is not so into thrifting? It's been 2 years since I moved out of U-City, and of all the things I miss (2 Wawas a couple of blocks away! Magic Carpet food truck! being in college and not having to work every day!)...I might miss 2nd Mile the most. No matter what you're looking for, guaranteed, 2M has it. In college, I used to do costumes and props design for a theater group, and 2M was my go-to spot. I costumed all of Alice in Wonderland in their clothing store for about 20 bucks (Teal blazer? Check. Psychedelic ascot and vest? Check. FREAKING CLOTH BUNNY EARS? Super check.) and pretty much re-furnished my dorm room kitchen with odds-n-ends from their "home goods" store. I also have at least 5 cardigans from this joint, and about 17 pairs of shoes (only $1.91 each!!!!!), not to mention a large collection of novelty items purchased when 8 of my closest friends decided to dress as Nascar-watching, Budweiser-guzzling, 1rst-Amendment Americans and crash a frat house party. (The theme was "EuroTrash." We went as "White Trash.") Sure, there's no dressing rooms, and the place smells a little bit like Grandma's attic, but that's part of the charm...that and the fact that unlike "consignment" shops like Buffalo Exchange, here you get exactly what you pay for... read more

I have found many a hidden treasure in this thrift shop. This place is so huge that they had to buy 3 adjacent properties and designate each for furniture, clothes and knick knacks. Though everything is organized, you still have to root through the items to find that diamond-in-the-rough. Bit it is definitely worth it! My last trip, they had just put out a new batch of jewelry, I felt that I had hit the jackpot! I love vintage jewelry and usually, their prices are reasonable. That is my only complaint; sometimes I feel that the pricing is not consistent with the quality. This is a big thrift store with great prices. I went on a day they had 50% off and had a huge haul!! There is a lot to look through clothing-wise, but if you have the time and patience it is definitely worth it, and you will find great steals. They also have fitting rooms near the front. CHEAP BOOKS. The Second Mile Too building (next door to the main location that has all the clothes, furniture, etc) has a book section in the back, and the books are priced by weight. Unusual, but this means that most books are less than $1.00! There're a lot of old, not-so-appealing reads (like a huge hardcover book with photos of Princess Diana or books about fertility), but you can find something interesting with some digging. As for the main location, I hardly ever find any clothes or shoes that fit or don't look too worn out, but I did once find a cute purse for a few dollars and a bedside table for $10. It just depends on the day, I guess. read more
