One of my favorite stores in Philly. I always come here when I need a gift for someone because there is such unique stuff. That being said I always end up getting myself something while there. There's always something no matter your budget, I have purchased mirrors, pictures, countless scarves, tiles, and figurines. Oh their jewlery is always reasonably priced and cute. Everyone that works there is super friendly and helpful! I kind of miss the OG store because it was so cool and multiple stories. I first spotted this shop when I was grabbing a Cheesesteak near by. I thought it was some kind of glasses shop and was just going to overlook it but the display was so eclectic I just had to stop in. I was greeted immediately as I walked in and informed of the layout of the store and sales of the day. They have a beautiful selection of handcrafted pieces from all around, the staff is kind and attentive. All very stylish! It's a great place to get a gift for someone or add a unique piece to your own collection. I left with a beautifully beaded octopus keychain and my mother got some sterling silver gemstone earrings. This is a fascinating place. After falling in love with Isaiah Zagar's Magic Gardens in Philadelphia, I heard that Eyes was an extension of him and his wife's interests in Latin American crafts, clothing and gifts. Zagar's influence and little Magic Garden-esque touches are seen throughout the store in little surprises, like on random ceilings or corners. But this is truly his wife's store (or, at least, that's the vibe I got). It's a gallery of artisan items for sale mixed with an art gallery with works for purchase. There's 3 floors (I think). Much like the Magic Gardens, every inch of the store is artfully covered. It's so hard to explain. Hand-woven shawls will be next to paper mache masks, next to beaded purses, next to Día de los Muertos trinkets next to beautiful wall decor and hamsa jewelry. If you don't inspect every inch of this store, you're doing yourself a clear disservice. Part of the fun is just going in with no goals and falling down the rabbit hole. My favorite shop on earth! Get ready to feast your eyes on Mexican folk art, Virgen's De Guadalupe, Dia De Los Muertos stuffs, Frida galore....and that's just Mexico! To name a few, this place is choc full of funky/quirky/cool things from Mexico to India. They have everything from clothing, jewelery, instruments and even Mexican tiles! The items are a bit pricey but I understand that they come from afar and are authentic. There are 3 levels to the store and each level is more exciting than the next. They also have either Latin American or Indian tunes playing in the background that which makes you feel like you are somewhere exotic. Some walls are adorned with Isaiah Zagar's Mosaic wall art which is one of my favorite elements to the store. Found this place on a trip to Philly through a virtual tour we were doing. Super unique and eccentric. Although, it might be misleading by the name, this place is NOT actually a gallery, it's a shop of eccentricities. There were so many random things that you would never even think of. I would even go as far as to say it's a little bit creepy because of some of the devil worship-y items. The bottom floor has a few more "normal" items such a plain glassware and plates. The main floor also has clothing and accessories. The top floor has some antique-looking items. I highly recommend you stop by if you're ever in the area. I'm not exactly sure what one would buy here because I couldn't find a single thing I really needed, but at least take a look around! read more

I came here on a Sunday while I was waiting for my brother to arrive as we met up for lunch. I was immediately stunned by the amount of things that were tucked in what seemed like a small store from the outside although upon entry you realize that there are three floors of magic. They have everything from earrings to handcrafted bowls from different artist all over the world. I left with incense a holder and a bowl for burning loose sage. The employees were very nice and willing to help me find the perfect ball and share details about each artist that crafted the different art. I definitely plan to return on my next visit to Philly and purchase some more items. read more

Love this gallery, came in to get a birthday present for my sister before I go into labor this weekend - I am very pregnant - and was unable to do that. I walked in a bit before 7pm had no idea what time the shop closed and was greeted. Went to peruse around the back of the shop, two more customers came in. Made my way to the front and the guy associate yells to his coworker that she can clock out. Then out of nowhere lights start turning off in the back. It was just confusing. Then he says he lost track of time and rushes everybody out. He was ringing up one person so I asked if the register was closed. He asked if I had in hand what I wanted and I asked if he could recommend a pair of earrings really quickly that I could pick out, pay for, and go home with. He didn't really let me finish and said no he can't do that. His approach to the whole situation was really uncomfortable and frustrating. I work in the hospitality industry so this isn't coming from a place of entitlement, strictly a customer service perspective. I waddled my way two blocks over and really wanted to get my sister something from here - just disappointed because who knows when I can make it back. Definitely won't be before my sister's birthday. read more

This place is going to be impossible to get around after all of us move in! It's been said a thousand times...well 14 times at this point to be more exact...this is a cool shop full of folk art heavily favoring the popular Mexican subjects of the día de los muertos, Lucidores, Lotería, Frída, and Virgen de Guadalupe (my fav.) Having just moved from Texas I was SHOCKED to see price tags in the $60 + range, but understanding the distance (and operating a shop on South St.) one is paying a premium. Eyes Gallery...sigh... If I had all the money in the world I might to spend over half of it in this store. (I'd also give plenty to many charities. OK? Get off my back.) Some items run expensive but if you bide your time...like maybe it'll take years... but someday those Virgin of Guadalupe door beads will come down in price...Someday. That's what happened to us years ago! We didn't live in Philly back then, so every couple months when we'd be back in town we'd go in to check on em and see if they were still some crazy amount of money. Then one miraculous day, a sale...Ours. Strangers to our casa sometimes think that we're very religious, because of door beads. Meanwhile notice that I gots Ganeshas and Buddhas peering at you from every corner too. I'm a fool for these things. If you look around my house there are little pieces of art from Eyes Gallery all over the place, collected over the years of stopping in to ogle. In fact, if possible, my house would look just like Eyes Gallery. I'd do it up almost identically. Every inch of every wall or empty surface I'd fill up with folk art from all over the world and Day of the Dead skeletons and mirrors and tapestries and lanterns and handpainted furniture...everything adorable and colorful. I've been working on this scheme little by little. You see I'm classin up the jernt. My "friends" won't be able to call my place "some hippie flop-house" much longer. I love Eyes Gallery, even without funds. There is so much fun and beautiful to oooh and ahhh over. I didn't even bring up the clothes and jewelry and bags to you yet. Name is misleading! This is not a gallery, and in no way a replacement for the Magic Gardens, which I was told it was by the front desk girl at the Magic Gardens. There's no wall art or mosaics here. Rather, it's a store of bags, jewelry, home decor, kitchenware, religious decor, pottery, carpets, and Mexican and Indian folk items. It's cool to walk through. Did I feel the urge to buy anything? No. But it's worth a walkthrough if you find yourself at Jim's next door or on the block. read more

A friend of mine has been mentioning this place for years.However, I've never been able to make it to Eyes Gallery till couple of days ago. Granted, based on my friend's comments my expectations were through the roof and you know, the place did not disappoint me... Dare I say that my high expectations were exceeded by what I saw?? First of all, once you get inside you realize that the store is a lot bigger than you think... there is an amazing collection of ethnic art, crafts, gifts and clothing - you want Mexican, South American, Indian, Tibetan, Turkish, you know - they have it... I love to visit this place. I have taken up collecting Mexican arts and crafts and this place has it all! It is generally pretty pricey, but you can usually get something different here that you haven't seen anywhere else. I love their jewelry selection which is not too pricey. I got a cute necklace here for less than $25. Its worth going into the basement because they have a section of discounted wares that are broken or chipped. Usually they are not too badly damaged and I have found some great stuff down there! I have yet to find another place in town that has such a great collection of Mexican goodies. The staff are always helpful and if you get on their mailing list, they let you know when they are having special events or sales! The building alone is worth visiting and don't forget to go upstairs. In a dream world, I would buy this place out, but for now, I will have to do it one piece at a time. read more

Yesterday was the first time I was ever in the Eyes Gallery. Even though I had grown up on South Street I had always passed it by with only a window glance at the most. But yesterday the skeleton bride and groom that amazingly resembles Jack and Sally caught my eye long enough to actually give the store a try. Imagine the environment of Pico on 15th Street [minus the food of course] mixed with that of Mineralistic but with the aroma of Garland of Letters. That's what I felt like when walking into Eyes Galley. I had grown up with a girl from Mexico so the jewelery and figurines, not to mention the Jesus candles, brought back childhood memories that made me want to dig my maracas out and whip up some yellow rice and beans. The artwork is amazing. Very Frida Kahlo, as someone else already mentioned. Lots of reds and green and oranges; the entire store was covered from floor to ceiling with mosaics, clothing, wall art and day of the dead masks. Eclectic can't even begin to describe it. A miniature version of the Jack and Sally in the window was hidden along the back wall and was found just in time for my husband and I's anniversary which is just around the corner. That along with the little luchador action figure make a great addition to our bedroom shelf, right next to Darth Vador and my little Skellanimal. At the front counter you'll find super friendly staff and some cool skull and Mexican fighter ceramic beads I can't wait to make some hemp bracelets from. If even just for a good dose of culture check out Eyes. It's a completely different experience from anything that end of South Street itself could provide. read more

Full of little knick knacks and what nots, it indulges the window shopper in me. It looks pretty small from the outside but is deceptively spacious, spanning 3 levels packed full of Mexican folk art. It's definitely worth going to just for the experience of being inside this store - beautifully decorated from head to toe. When I was a kid we lived in a small town in NY, and there was this one restaurant called the Crazy Taco, owned by a lady everyone called the Crazy Taco Lady. She was covered in tattoos and had brightly dyed hair--an oddity in that town. Her restaurant had tons and tons of colorful, artsy junk in the yard, and the interior was eclectic and bright and amazing. Every surface was decorated, none of the tables and chairs were normal, and nobody ever went there for the food. I don't know if it's there anymore, and I might be remembering it completely wrong, but in my head it looks a lot like Eyes Gallery. What an interesting store. Awesome to walk around in, waaaaay to overpriced to shop in. Three floors of crazy, colorful stuff from the Americas with some Indian thrown in, mostly things to decorate your house with, some jewelry, and some glassware. I would have loved to put half those things on my walls (little dioramas, pretty mirrors, hangings, etc), but they were priced far above what they were worth. I mean, cool as it looks, I'm not paying $40+ for a piece of painted and cut tin, especially if it looks like it shouldn't cost more than $10. There were pieces in there that looked the way they cost, though, so if I ever find myself with lots of money to burn, I'll be back. read more

Unique well-priced imported/hand picked and carried back pieces make this store worth checking out. I purchased my first Oaxacan wood figurine here and was not disappointed. Whenever I find myself near Broad street I have to go in and see what is new. The storefront makes it look like there is palm reading inside or that sort of majestic thing, but it is a narrow store filled with treasures that surround you. The inside is interesting and has multiple levels - caution when going upstairs, though, as the spiral staircase is a bit wobbly! Talk to the owner about her travels - she is a nice lady and very worldly. read more

Mexican folk art is one of my favorite things in the whole world ever. I had a solo art exhibit a few years back at the Philadelphia Magic Gardens which is Isaiah Zagar's gallery. His wife, owns this store and she is super sweet. All the ladies that I have met who work here are always so friendly and helpful. The unique hand-picked items are actually brought over from Mexico so everything is authentic. I love pretty much everything about this store. I will keep coming back as much as I can. The eyes gallery is my fave!!! I have purchased so many cool pieces of jewelry here that it's about time I wrote a review. The design of the store is truly unique, the building is an actual piece of art. This place is the best spot to purchase gifts hands down. The first floor contains jewelry of all kinds, vintage, handmade, kitsch, Mexican, Indian, native American, and designer to name a few. In the middle of the store they have clothing by boutique brands like flax, angie and effies heart. There is a section for children's clothes gifts and toys, the back had decorations that lead to and an upstairs that has an instrument room, pottery, shadowbox art, just the most exotic things. There is also a downstairs with amazing statues dishes, carpets, handbags. The eyes gallery, is a gallery of art of all kinds. This review is very personal to me. Although I know no one who works at this store, It has held a very special place in my heart for over 15 years. As a broke art student, I was searching for what I wanted to do when I got out of school. On visiting this store, repeatedly, I realized owning a boutique was for me. I loved all the mexican day of the dead art, and the friendly way the staff greeted me. I felt at home with all the beautiful textiles and oil cloth. It was one of the first places I truly felt at home shopping, and this lead me to want to open my own shop. While the shop I owned wasn't like Eyes at all, I loved the concept of using the walls and every inch of the store to showcase the goods. Never is a time I can't find a few things I can't live without here, be in art books, pieces of mexican art, or just fun post cards. Thank you for being an inspiration, and a Philadelphia legend. You make South Street a great place. I can't wait for my daughter to get a bit older so I can take her to shop for neat things. read more

While I am a fan of Eyes, the low rating is due to the products being waaaay overpriced. It's a great store and looks beautiful and has interesting pieces of street art....BUT.....$75 for a 2" clay skull figure playing tennis is a little too much... If you find yourself on South St, by all means take a look inside. Go up stairs and trip out on the colors and mirrors and masks and musical instruments. You'll fall in love with something only to find that it's pretty expspensive for what it is...then again, perhaps I am a cheap bastard.... read more

Eyes has some of my favorite things in Philadelphia: a great selection of Oaxacan Black pottery in their basement (you're not going to find a comparable anywhere else in the city) folkloric musical instruments on the second floor. "What my house would look like if I had mad cash", is the kitschiest stop on South Street (next to Magic Gardens, but they're related, so it's cool) Even if you're not looking to buy any Day of the Dead figurines or Anima Sola Wall hangings, the place totally lives up to it's "gallery" title. You could spend hours in this store. 3 stories, packed to the brim with the most fun Mexican folk art you've never seen. Very cool place. I've always loved folk art, but never seen it presented to this extreme. I usually encounter mostly Mexican folk art, but Eyes Gallery has presents all walks of Latin America represented. Pretty cool! Even cooler that it's all in one place. If you like folk arts from Mexico and the southwest - this is a good place to shop! From time to time you can also find some random Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese folk arts as well. Do you need some skeletons and colorful masks for dia de los muertos? Maybe some candles to honor the Virgin de Guadalupe? There are also Maya and Aztec inspired clay works, paintings, and wood work! hailing from southern california originally, and being more than a little homesick on occasion, i thought this place would be an answer to mildly serious prayers. it was not, at all. i love mexican, south american and central american folk art, both vintage and current, and what i found here was over-priced crap. i am not saying that actual items are crap, they aren't. they are lovely items, hopefully produced by equally amazing artisans. however, it's all of the same beautiful items from back home, with a helluva price hike. what gives, gallery?? from travelling in mexico, i know what a markup stores in socal are giving, and yet...your store?? marking up the markups! as much as i love to support local artists, and fricking LOVE the artwork contained therein, i won't ever come back here. i find the entirety of it disingenous, and more than a little shady. in the future, should i need to add to my loteria sets, frida kahlo tchotchkes, or wondrous tin art, i'll just wait for a visit back home, or beg a friend or relative to hook me up. read more
