I have been to strange and unusual stores throughout the Philly proper, and then I've been to Thunderbird Salvage! Even if it's just to window shop through peculiar history going through vintage and thrift stores like Jinxed (https://www.yelp.com/biz/jinxed-fishtown-philadelphia) is a favorite pastime of mine. But Thunderbird Salvage is the equivalent of taking every single Jinxed throughout the city and tossing it into one old-school church building. I've heard stories, I've read great reviews and followed them on social media, and I've seen photos. But even so nothing could prepare me for taking in this treasure trove of eclectic vintage finds that come from a group that also specializes in salvage and excavation. It took me forever to get here due to the pandemic and not being able to find the right day to come during my Philly excursions. But it felt right to check it out when I was in the area for the appropriately titled Weirdo Fest and was dressed head-to-toe as Pee Wee Herman. With it being inside an old church the exterior is just as eclectic as the interior, especially when they have an outdoor market like they do on several special occasions such as this one. I can't even begin to cover all of the eclectic finds that I saw inside and out, But standout items included the following. ~ A full media section that ranged from eight tracks and video cassettes to CDs and DVDs. ~ A full vintage mascot outfit that I might have contemplated more than I should have. ~ rustic tools and vintage canes by the bucket load! ~ an entire bookshelf of black & white photos of naked people that I *might* have added a portrait of Jesus in to be cheeky. ~ so many intriguing pieces of vintage furniture and clothing that I wanted to take home and make my own. ~ All the taxidermy! Chaotic place with all kinds of unique finds. If you don't look everywhere, you will miss something! Kind of like one of those find-it books/games with old relics and photos up on shelves or in a cluttered room. I mean this in all the best ways possible. Staff is friendly. Lots of interesting stuff but prices, at least for anything that interested me, were high. At least 30% more than I've paid for similar items. I've collected wood carvings and ceramics for years. Even with shipping on eBay or Mercari, I have gotten many cheaper deals. That said, I haven't added to my collection since before the pandemic, and I understand inflation has occurred. Still, both wood carvings we wanted to buy were broken and cracked. The damage on both was pretty significant but I was going to TLC them and try to revive. The man at the counter asked $60; my best price was $40, which I felt was very fair for a 14" and 7" wood carving, neither one more than 20yrs old, and both damaged. He said he'd be "giving them away" for $40. Anyway, spent a lot of time looking around but went away with nothing after making what I feel was a fair offer. Might stop in if we're ever nearby again, but unfortunately wasn't worth the 1.5h round trip. read more

I did not expect to see what I did when I walked in it's huge, and full of surprises. This place is a paradise for anyone who grew up going to the "junk" stores (that's what we called them in the South and my Mom would take me out antiquing all of the time.) The hidden gems, the places with dark little nooks and crannies, the awesome kind of place that brings back that excitement of possibilities! Like a kid waiting desperately for the cereal to be finished to get the toy. It's not curated and certainly not a boutique, it's the real deal for Rummagers and collectors of all ages, treasures everywhere you look, so make sure you look! After months and months of enjoying their hilarious Instagram stories and posts, one of them was not only funny but something I had been looking for. A quick DM conversation and Venmo and it was mine! with the reminder that I had 7 days to pick it up. Cool. I ventured out to pick up my treasure on a cold winter morning. They are located in one of the older areas of Philadelphia, which means lots of narrow, one way streets, row homes and the need for highly skilled and creative parking acumen. I was delighted to find a spot on the same block, bonus it was an end-spot, and extra bonus it was a legal end spot. This is like hitting the lottery of Philadelphia parking. The business is located inside of an old, large stone building that clearly was once a church. I love when these former neighborhood churches are saved and made useful by other businesses. I'm going to emphasize the words here again: LARGE, OLD, CHURCH, STONE. That means it's impossible to heat or cool well, so if it's a cold day outside, it's not much warmer inside and while it may be cooler inside in the summers (benefit of stone), it's still pretty impossible to create anything like climate control. Dress accordingly.' They are a salvage place. Salvage. What that means is that they likely have either a partnership with or a sister company that does things like demolition, moving, hauling, clean outs. I suspect this business grew from the other, seeing so many interesting and lovely things being tossed out, and choosing to save them and offer to others. This appeals to me. I like when useful things are saved and reused - either in their original form or 'up cycled'. As a salvage in an old church, it's a jumble and a treasure hunt. There are shelves and shelves of items sort of organized not really, kind of 'area', there's a section of clothing, and furniture all over the place. Very little is priced, I like that because I get to bargain, which they seemed to enjoy as well. The larger and more valuable items are priced, which is cool too. My item was waiting and all those shelves were CALLING to me. I had a wonderful time digging through them, found a few more treasures, got a decent price on them and left with a smile. Staff were pleasant but unobtrusive. Helpful when needed and easy to find. This is a great place for the treasure and bargain hunter, though their prices are not yard sale, they approach what resell markets will pay, so if you're looking for that be prepared to search, bundle and bargain, and you still may not get the price you were hoping for. That's the business. Will I be back? Um, yeah. It's my kind of place, I had a blast poking through all the shelves and racks. read more

With a DM and a Venmo payment, you can let them dig through stuff for you and shop from the comfort of your computer. If there's something you're looking for to complete a project or decorate your home, they probably have it. Been here dozens of times. Always fun to take a look and find some treasure, they have a little bit of everything, a nice selection of vintage: trinkets, jewelry, books, ephemera, toys, and clothes. You get a good bang for your buck, and nice service. Always have a different selection of music playing so it's a bonus. If you havent been recently, give it another visit! This place came recommended from another antique dealer. I had to be in the area, so I gave it a shot. The 3 stars are for the potential, not the actual on my visit. Think flea market with a handful of unique items, but those unique/antiques were at full retail. There was a Singer sewing cabinet minus the machine (no ability to date it) and they wanted $150. That is about as close to full retail as you can get. There was a vintage oak library table that needed some work, but it was only $40. If you are a picker who is into smalls, this is your place. I wouldn't go here unless I was in the area. read more

Seem like a nice bunch of people with a pretty wide collection of ephemera, but a lot of it is in really decayed and broken down condition with prices that aren't super reasonable. In the digital age, most of the stuff I saw that I might want I can get on ebay for half the price. Also a lot of stuff kind of hit and miss, like a Star Trek item I really wanted but I opened the box and there was a Tonka truck inside. If you have more patience and money than I do, you should check this place out; and you really ought to ignore that insane one star review. Really cool indoor flea market! I had a great time walking around and sorting through paraphernalia. It's slightly gritty and spooky inside, but that's the only ambient vibe that really works when you're looking at mannequin heads and old photographs. I've gotten so much stuff from there from old antique liquor bottles and painting frames to use for my wedding to some great furniture pieces and decorative pieces we use in our house. The crazy owner followed me around the store! I bought plates at this store before. I work around the corner so I walked in to see if I liked anything. I picked up a piggy bank I knew I wanted it so I walked around the store to look at what else they had. The owner followed me. She was looking through book shelves. She followed me into other rooms. A man walked the other way from me because he thought I was stealing because I used my phone and put it back in my pocket while she was obviously following me. I heard him say; is she?? I smiled at the ladies husband the other owner he didn't smile back. Luckily the guy at the counter said how are you? I said I'm okay how are you? I asked how much it was because it didn't have a price tag he said give me five dollars I did and left. The cat that was with the witch kept coming up to me as she followed me so it was nice. I'd been told to visit Thunderbird Salvage for quite some time. That this thrift store carries everything from the necessities to frivolous items no one would ever need -- a most desirable factor for someone like myself. Walking up to the old church, I immediately felt a chill climb my back, but die once I stepped inside the disorganized house of worship. Lights hand from ceilings, walls of old dusty bottles line the walls, and rooms filled to the brim with art pieces and frames halt your every move. And it's lovely. Never have I been in such a place where I thought I could find a cute vintage band tee, as well as cigarette butt stained luggage. Small nooks and crannies leave you wondering "why is this here in the first place" and the awkward amount of rocking horses give off a great 'serial killer child' vibe. A great place for a family thrift, or a place for old folks to wither away, leaving their ghost to roam free... you decide. Holy cow, this place is awesome! I had a chance to visit here for the first time this past weekend and loved it. The place is in a huge warehouse in North Philly packed to the gills with tons of stuff. You can find electronics, clothes, furniture, vinyl, books, or whatever you can think of here! What is even better that everything is priced to sell and not given the over the top prices like a consignment or antique store. Visited Thurderbird for the first time last week. Their new location is an old church which is so cool. The place is jammed with wonderful antique & vintage merchandise. Every nook & cranny is filled but still displayed nicely. This place will last a long time due to the fact they are always getting in new merchandise and let you know on Facebook and Instagram but best of all they are negotiable with their prices which is the key when you are selling second hand merchandise. They also have two store cats which gives it a warm feeling when you walk in. This place will be on my "to do" list at least once a week. read more

I had heard about Thunderbird Salvage through Jocelyn on YouTube (aka Crazy Lamp Lady). After I saw her videos, I knew I had to check this place out! My husband and I visited for the first time last Saturday (we live in South Jersey, so it was about a half hour drive), and it is the BEST location for thrifting that I have ever been in! It's located in an old large stone former church in Fishtown...really different! But it definitely gels with the eclectic contents inside...just about anything you could possibly want! There was so much to see, and the employees were really nice and very helpful. We ended up going back again the next day, and brought our adult son with us. All three of us can't wait to go back and visit again soon. They have so many interesting things that you could never find anywhere else. And as a matter of fact, they DO even have a kitchen sink! I am a professional picker/salver and in my 50 years at it this Thunderbird has become my favorite place for both deposits and withdrawals. George Matt and Sarah are dedicated to having their customers really enjoy their repurposed church/thrift store. Very fine family vibe, but detailed hunting is part of the experience, so you will need to allow for time and multiple visits as they put out fresh treasure every hour. Our artists collective the Philadelphia DumpsterDivers had one of our meetings here and despite our being the cheapest skinflintiest group you could find, most of us had to actually buy stuff (frowned upon in DumpsterDivers regulations).
