Excellent spot for German flavored brunch. I had the corned beef hash skillet. Perfect meat. Taters were a little dry, but mix in the two large sunny side up eggs and it waa great. My wife had a veggie omelet add a bratwurst. So much for veggie. Lol Her omelet waa okay. More like a few eggs, folded over some veggies. Not mixed in. To some, this is a perfectly made omelet. The technique seemed correct, maybe fold the eggs over when they're still wet. Would have made all the difference. The bratwurst was excellent and my mustard hating wife loved the kitchen made mustard. So much so that we brought some home. She also had fresh squeezed OJ. Always a super sweet treat. The service waa excellent and more than made up for the minor challenges. Based on the bratwurst alone, the traditional dinner items have got to be incredible. This is one of my go-to restaurants for consistently good food and good service. The interior rooms are quaint and cozy and the covered porch is very enjoyable. I really like all of the brunch choices (all huge portions), the wings, German potato salad, sandwiches, and lamb chops. The last time I went my friend had the perrogis which he loved. They have some good German beers (plus regular beers and cocktails). The desserts look good but I've always been too full to try them. This place is head-and-shoulders better in every way than the other "German" restaurants in the area. read more

Valters a true and underrated spot in German Village. Really great brunch spot! The patio in warmer months is so good. We were regulars here for a long time. Valter and his sister, both from Albania, own the restaurant and rent the building from the German Maennerchor choir. On Thursday nights they practice upstairs and you can hear their singing. Mostly all the food comes from Valters farm on the south side - true farm to table. I haven't been for dinner so I can only speak to their brunch - Get the French toast!!! It is not your typical and it's SO good. I had their eggs and potatoes- excellent Mimosa's are delicious The servers are usually always in good spirits as well as the bartenders. OH! And the desserts in the case, are home made... need I say more. read more

I must admit I made a poor choice as I misunderstood this to be a sausage dish with a side of pasta (turns out it was the other way around!) The sleeper hit was the dessert --- the "Bee sting" was absolutely fantastic. The cake was moist with toasted almonds and a generous drizzle of honey. I would go back just for this. This was my first time trying German food, and it was quite the introduction! The ambiance is like a normal bar with dining, which felt very relaxed and welcoming. The staff were also very nice and attentive. I ordered the Maennerchor Schweinehaxe, and the portion was way too big. But I had a serious appetite and managed to finish it! Can you title restaurants as though it's the Confidential Clue envelope answer? Is that allowed in this day and age? Valters plays, it's just second fiddle to the greats. As framed in Moneyball with the Yankees, this German spot just falls short at playing a big game. Play Oakland A's ball well, you do you yo. Our lamb was doing its thing, waitress was checking in, interior was interioring - and yet - I wanted. Lore, sure. Little cheaper, sure. Less questions, sure. If placed at a table I wouldn't flee, yet my attitude would simply signal another sure. All chips down, this is just another day in the office type of spot that feels like it should be an exciting Friday workplace chili potluck. Sad! read more

I've so glad that I finally made it to Valters Restaurant in Columbus and enjoyed a nice meal there since I was in from out of town and from Missouri. For dinner I ordered the Bavarian pork schnitzel that came with a little of the hunter's (jaeger) sauce and spatzle that were fresh and delicious but the pickled red cabbage as an extra side was only just okay. I started my meal with the beer cheese soup that was delightful with the fresh bread. All my food was high-quality and above-average German cuisine and definitely not cheap. But I think Valter's still serves a typically Americanized version of German food that is lacking a bit in the high quality of food you'd find in the majority of restaurants across Germany and I base my opinion on having lived in Germany for many years and miss it there a lot. One other surprising thing about Valter's is it had a very limited menu of entrees and although it's not a big sticking point, I imagine that this place sticks to doing what they do best. So I'd say both Valter's and nearby Schmidt's Sausage Haus both rate highly for German restaurants in the US but aren't my personal German favorites. Valter's is in a beautiful building both inside and out and has a warm and inviting interior and the service was good. read more

Grew up with German grandparents, and so much of this menu and atmosphere felt delightfully familiar!! We split the sauerkraut balls as an appetizer--crunchy, hot and tasty, good amount of kraut. My entree was Wiener schnitzel, and it was so delicious, with mushroom gravy and asparagus on a bed of buttery soft spaetzle. I was in German dining heaven!! We also split the Bee Sting, I would say it was an almond cake with delicious Bavarian cream filling along with toasted almonds and honey. Not a bite left on the plate! I came here with my friend for dinner last night and we had a great time. The place wasn't full but had a good crowd for a Monday night, which is always a good sign. The staff there were very friendly and made sure we were having a good time. The place itself was very on brand with the German village and a German restaurant. It was very clean inside and everything seem to be in good shape. The food was very good, I had the bavarian Wiener schnitzel and my friend had the Pasta Südtirol. Mine was phenomenal, it was cooked and fried to perfection. The flavor of the gravy was phenomenal and the noodles were so good. My friend also raved about his and we both cleared our plates. I was in Columbus for a conference and I had some German friends in my group, so we had to make a trip to German town and find a great German restaurant. Upon showing my friend a long list of options they said Valters! They had the type of schnitzel plate with noodles and gravy that they wanted, so off we went! The restaurant is in a charming old house and it feels so German and homie, they had some kind of piano and chorus practice in the room next to us which added to the charm. We had the schnitzel plates, a pretzel with mustard, beer, and a bratwurst. My German friends said it was unfortunately not just like how mom makes it, but good enough to scratch that itch for the specific dish they wanted. The waitress was very friendly and answered all our questions and took the grilling from my German friend in stride as he asked very specific questions about the beer and schnitzel. Shoot. This has been on my to-go list for 2 years and we finally made a point to go and brought the family. Lovely old building. But we were disappointed with our experience. Best parts: hubs liked his beer and the pretzel was tasty; we were quickly seated. We lucked into parking in the tiny parking lot. Not the best: Caesar salad was heavily dressed with Italian dressing not Caesar, and the added salmon was the thin part of the salmon with thick fatty skin attached. The pasta (cheese ravioli ) was basic and buried under a thick tomato sauce. The schnitzel was overly salty but edible with spaetzle that didn't seem fresh (seemed boxed or frozen?). And the cast iron prime rib was very salty accompanied by "sautéed fresh vegetables" (only onions and peppers). Fries were ok but very salty. We were glad to be seated but the table was in a narrow hall between rooms at the bottom of a staircase, resulting in getting bumped frequently. Probably should eliminate the spot or make it a 2-top. It all seemed weird in contrast to the glowing reviews. We hope it was just a bad night but we aren't likely to come back to find out. read more

Had a great brunch with my loves! The atmosphere was great! The food was top notch quality and prepared to perfection. The price of the food was very reasonable. The owner came out to the table to ask us how everything was. The only minor complaints were purely personal preference on seasoning and temp of the Matterhorn. I'm not from the area, and I was passing through on the way back to the airport from Indiana with a friend and we randomly picked this place. It was a pretty good choice. The food is German fare, and I decided to try the breakfast sandwich with bologna. Wow. I've never seen a hunk of bologna this thick in my entire life... it was perfectly crispy on the outside, and juicy and salty on the inside. Try as I did, I couldn't finish it. Eating that much bologna in one sitting isn't easy, especially with the sodium content. (People with hypertension issues beware)! It was super tasty, though, and I would order it again: no regrets.We also tried the mozzarella sticks and they were tasty too. The one thing that made our lunch difficult were all the bees. Our outside table was under umbrellas, and there were multiple bees harassing us. Since we weren't allergic or afraid, it was okay, but difficult to actually enjoy the meal. Not anyone's fault, but affected the experience negatively for me. read more
