THIS review is why I joined Yelp. In a world of mediocre to terrible businesses, I had to write about the amazingly positive experiences that I keep having time after time with the family-owned Beckman Brothers Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. I'll tell you my overall opinion, and if you want to know the details of the "why" behind it, read-on beyond this next paragraph: Beckman Brothers is a genuinely honest, reliable, experienced, and fair company. Most of their staff is family. At last count, one person wasn't related, and he is a life-long friend of one of the technicians. When you call, John, the owner, typically answers. If you have an emergency, a technician is at your house somewhere between minutes and at worst, a couple of hours. They give you honest analysis and solutions at reasonable prices, usually with good, better, best options. And when they perform the work, it's done right. Simply put, I have never worked with any company, in any of the trades, that I trust and appreciate more. They are what you wish every company would be like. So how'd I get here?... Let me give you a bit of background... I had been using a legacy local HVAC company... A one-man operation, who has his office in downtown Lake Zurich and has been servicing the area for years. He is friendly. Honks his horn as he drives by and tells you his life story when he comes to do work. And here's where the problems are with him... He either lacks knowledge or intentionally strings out issues so that you call him back out, over and over. My final straw was that the flame wouldn't light in my furnace, so I called for repair. He'd diagnose a failed flame sensor and fix it for a hundred bucks. Three months later, same problem. Another hundred bucks later, I get two more months, and, you guessed it, same problem. This is when I asked around, and called Beckman Brothers on a referral from a friend. Martin from Beckman Brothers came out within hours and scoped the furnace to find that there was a crack in the heat exchanger, which not only could have been leaking carbon monoxide into my home every time the furnace fired up, but also was leading to the repeated failures around the flame sensor as the safety kicked in and wouldn't let gas flow. Martin showed me the image from the scope and gave me a written estimate for repairing the furnace. I also asked him for an estimate to replace the entire furnace, as it was around fifteen years old. Out of curiosity, I called my legacy HVAC guy, who came out, and to no surprise, wanted to replace the flame sensor again for another hundred bucks. I told him that after some research, I was concerned about the heat exchanger, as it could be a root cause of my repeated problems. He finally looks and tells me, "your heat exchanger is broken," and the resolution is to, "replace the furnace." Not only did he not find the problem on his own in three visits over five months, but he also gave me one resolution in the end, a quote for a builder-grade furnace that COST MORE than a mid-level Bryant furnace from Beckman Brothers. Needless to say, that was the last time I invited my now former HVAC guy in my house. Since then, Beckman Brothers has replaced two furnaces and two air conditioner condensers. I have a service agreement with them where they come out twice a year (once for Heat and once for A/C) for preventative maintenance. Since switching to Beckman Brothers, the only issue I have had was a furnace intermittently turning off because of a dirty flame sensor during an unusually early cold snap. Had my annual maintenance been scheduled for two weeks earlier than it was set for, I wouldn't have even had that problem. Bottom line, I cannot endorse a company more than I do Beckman Brothers Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning. And if you have an issue, do not hesitate to call them. You will get honest service and fair options. I am confident you will not regret it. read more

I called this outfit because of good reviews. I asked the receptionist if I could speak to the owner because of a special situation. John Beckman came on the phone. I explained to him that I had a leaking boiler, and that I was working with a county agency which pays for heating repair or even replacement, & asked if he would be willing to work with them. He abruptly replies, "I'm booked out 3-4 weeks (Really? When the temperatures are in the 60's?) and I'm not interested in this arrangement." And, then proceeds to immediately rudely hang up on me. This is an outfit of integrity? To be treated like dirt, and hung up on speaks volumes about the company. If this is how ANY business owner handles a customer, and tells them he's not interested, I'd NEVER hire such a company. read more

They say when you find a trusty handyman, to hold on to them for life. With that being said, I had used other companies in the past, but felt like I was being severely ripped off. The last straw was when a technician from the OTHER company told me something was wrong, and when I asked what, he told me "It would take too long to explain." Nope, that's your job. Sorry, but it's over. I heard good things about Beckman Bros. When it came time to replace my 25 year old AC, they took me through the process, and clearly showed me the charges prior, and explained them. The replacement went smoothly- I barely even noticed they were there. Just recently had the furnace cleaned for winter, and it was another professional, and efficient visit. They are also friendly, and seem to genuinely care about their customers, and take pride in their work. You don't feel like just 'another number' like you do with the bigger companies. That's all there is to it, folks. I will be a Beckman Bros customer for as long as I live in the area. read more

Technician arrived on time and performed a thorough review. There weren't any issues with the work he did. Turned out it was just a breaker trip, possibly due to the age of the unit. Where my issue is that they charged us for a half hour of labor ON TOP of the diagnostic fee. So I paid $119 ($75+$44) for a measly 30 minutes of light work. In my opinion this should have been covered by the diagnostic fee. I paid it though, because I thought that was the on top of the diagnostic. So while the visit was good, I had a bad taste in my mouth because of the overcharging. Would not call them again. read more

I can't say enough great things about these guys. A couple of weeks ago my air conditioning went out. I called and spoke to the owner on the phone who gave me an accurate and fair estimate. He sent a serviceman out that day. He arrived exactly when they said he would. He targeted the problem; my air conditioner needed a capacitor. He didn't have the part on his truck so he called another serviceman who had the part and brought it over. He arrived in only twenty minutes. They had the whole job done within a half hour. I was blown away by their professionalism, honesty and competence. Flash forward a week. The weather drops and my heater goes out. I called Beckman Bros again and tell them the problem. I set up an appointment, with the receptionist. This time the owner calls me back and tells me how to fix the problem myself while we're on the phone. Turns out I just needed to clean off the ignition piece. He could have charged me to come out and fix it, but instead he took the time to help me out. That sealed my loyalty. I've dealt with other companies that are so unreliable, incompetent, and who set up appointments then just don't show up. I don't know about you, but I won't be at the mercy of these guys who are total hacks and frauds. Beckman Bros. is the best. If you need someone to work on your heating or air conditioning call them. After speaking to their receptionist this morning (5/9/14)--I wouldn't hire them. Nearly all of the positive reviews are over a year old. I have to think that something has changed in that year. I called for A/C service... was put on hold... then, a very rude women came on the phone. Over the course of our short conversation she made it clear that she was doing me a favor by working for me! There are too many contractors out there to deal with arrogant, crabby, disrespectful receptionists. Look elsewhere. Beckman Bros is top notch when it comes to HVAC services. We have had work done by a few of the technicians and have been really impressed with the entire team! We have been using their services for a few years now and really appreciate the specialized care and maintenance of our furnace and A/C. They cater to customers schedules by setting up appointments that will work for you in regards to work hours etc... During our recent furnace maintenance, it was noted by the technician Brian, that it was time to replace our 25 year old furnace due to multiple problems. He explained our options in great detail to ensure we weren't just getting sold the most expensive. All of the technicians we have had are very detailed in outlining any issues they come across and provide options that we could select within our means. During our annual furnace and AC maintenances, they also provide information on how to get the most efficient use of our systems and what we can do to ensure the best upkeep is maintained. We have recommended Beckman Bros to our friends, family, and neighbors with no complaints! Beckman Bros. came out to our house today after our furnace stopped working. I called Beckman Bros. this morning (a Saturday) and they gave me a service window of 9-11 am. At 9:05 Martin was here and, within an hour, we had heat! He corrected a couple things that we wouldn't have been able to do ourselves and made a few suggestions that could help our furnace function more efficiently. He was very professional and friendly. Pricing was reasonable. We will definitely be using Beckman again! read more

I have never received such great service in a difficult situation! I called late at night and said I had an "urgent situation", not "emergency situation" and they still called back within an hour. I was given a window between 7:30 and 8:30 am for when they would show up, and the repairman showed up at 7:30 on the dot. As it turns out, the furnace was fine but he still checked over everything and did some preventative maintenance and I was only charged $75 for what was originally an "urgent" call. A++! I would not hesitate to call them again for service or installation work. On a side note, it was also refreshing to have a serviceman who didn't wreak of cigarette smoke! After a bad experience with a different HVAC company, I found these guys on Yelp and decided to give them a shot. Every technician I've had out so far has been outstanding. They're polite and thorough and their prices are good. I do a service contract with them so they come out every fall/winter to clean my furnace and AC unit. Highly recommend. read more

After a recent flood, my HVAC system had been fully submerged along with a portion of my ducts. They were quick to come out, assess the situation and present options. Their prices were fair and their solution to my need to reroute some of my ducts (at my request) was great. They completed the job on time and at budget. Glad I found these guys on here. My a/c went out all of a sudden yesterday and so I was in a panic trying to find a "reputable" hvac company because this week called for close to 90 degree temps. Called and Brian came over within the hour. Right away he was able to tell what was wrong and luckily, he had the part. In his truck. When he was checking the furnace he heard some noises, checked it out and turns out the fan was loose. He also gave us recommendations for when we were thinking of purchasing a new unit. I've used Beckman Bros twice. Once to service my air conditioner in July and this month (October) for general check up / maintenance on my furnace before the winter months. Both times I have had Martin. Now I have used a few HVAC companies for various reasons and they have generally done ok work. What I love about Beckman Brothers on top of their very apparent expertise in HVAC, but their level of customer service is on point. From the initial friendly greeting when I called to request their services to the friendly and professional personality I got from Martin. In a world with declining customer service it is so refreshing to get an overall fantastic experience dealing with Beckman Brothers. I highly recommend this company. read more

After a number of excellent experiences working with this company its time to write a review. I love working with Beckman. I've done the heavily marketed HVAC companies and a few smaller companies and Beckman is by far the best experience I've had. I've replaced a furnace and A/C unit and have had my boiler serviced a number of times. The pricing on the HVAC system was very reasonable compared with a number of other companies I received quotes from. The installation was done in a professional manner and a they delivered everything they promised. The system has worked great. I originally found Beckman because I needed a second opinion on my boiler. It is a 8 year boiler and one company quoted a crazy number and also suggested I might replace. Beckman came out, got everything working perfectly and laid my concerns to rest. The cost, less than $200. If you want to work with an owner operator driven small business (yet big enough that they have resources and can get things done.. i.e. 24 service, competitive pricing on big jobs) that seems like they actually care about there customers, give them a try. read more

I replaced a 20 year old Furnace/AC. I had bid this out to 3 dealers. Beckman Bros was able to use a combo of their own promotions and manufacturer rebates to give me the best deal. They also were very willing to help educate on the benefits/value of each different type of furnace available. The promo was a combo of discounts and they cleared my whole vents, which was badly needed after some rehab on the house. When they came back for the 1 year inspection which was included I let them know the AC was a little noisy. They quickly replaced a part which solved the problem. They've done other regular service for me and have been very polite, clean, and prompt at each visit. I'd highly recommend them. read more

Needed my furnace serviced and was having issues with duct work on second floor. Beckman was able to come out on a Saturday which fit my schedule. They were quick to diagnose the issues with the second floor and performed service on the furnace. I like establishing a relationship with companies that provide service for home related matter. Beckman Bros were terrific. Gave me a very fair quote over the phone, came out a day or two later to clean out our dryer vents. The service man was patient bc I was a few minutes late, he was neat while in the house ( wore booties on his shoes) and he was very nice and worked quickly. My dryer now drys a load of laundry so much quicker and of course have a clean vent is a safety issue too. I would pass their name out to anyone that asks, and actually already have referred them to a friend. Super great- and this is the first review I have EVER written, so that says something! read more

I searched online for a local HVAC company. I found Beckman Bros. I called to schedule preventative maintenance and spoke with John. I told him about a pressure switch fault that kept shutting off my furnace and he said lets schedule the preventative cleaning and we'll check it out when we're there. Brian came out to service the furnace. I had a very professional encounter with him. You could tell that he knew his stuff and is able to communicate well with people. Long story short Brian was able to efficiently and effectively trouble shoot my furnace problem. The Beckman team has always been available each time I've tried to contact them. We can now run our furnace with the door completely closed, something we were not able to do last winter. Beckman was recommended to us through a business contact. We spoke with the owner, John Beckman, to clarify the scope of the project. Bryan came out and inspected our system and made recommendations. Based on Bryan's estimates we purchased 2 complete Bryant HVAC systems, a UV air filter, and had the duct work cleaned and sealed. Both the installers and the duct sealant team were professional, courteous and knowledgeable. After our project was completed, the main room of our home still wasn't heating as efficiently as we had hoped. John and Gary came back out asap and made additional recommendations. These guys are great!! I called American Weathermakers to fix my furnace at the beginning of February and was horribly disappointed. I called John at Beckman Bros and they came out with the part and fixed it. I had heat in less than 8 hours and they charged me half of what AW was going to charge. So happy with the service and quality from Beckman Brothers. When I woke up Sunday morning the furnace was out and the house was a brisk 55 degrees I called Beckman Brothers Heating and Air Conditioning. They had a technician at my home within an hour. Martin was polite and friendly but most importantly knowledgeable. The problem was diagnosed and several options were provided. I wound up with a new furnace. Adam and Martin installed it and they were very professional and respectful of my home. I thought that it would be a mess since there was a mixture of rain and snow that morning but they kept everything clean. I am happy to refer Beckman Brothers to anyone with HVAC needs. I've had Beckman service our air conditioner and furnace for a few years. In July, our basement was wiped out by a huge sewer back up. They did a lot of work for me including redoing the dryer vent to meet code for the new dryer replacement, a new furnace install, and a new a/c install. Every time they visited the house, they were friendly and professional and provided me with information to make a decision. Initially, I thought we were going to save the furnace, they suggested replacing, but said that the furnace was safe for the time being. It wouldn't fire up a few months later, so we went with their initial recommendation. There were no high pressure sales tactics or magically cheap units with coupons from those sketchy flyers you get in the mail. You really had the sense that they were focused on quality, providing reasonable prices, and giving excellent service. I'm sure you can find cheaper units, but Beckman provides high quality Bryant units and they back them with their responsive service people. You know that they'll be there for you if there is ever a problem. It's hard to find people you trust. I trust Beckman Brothers to be honest and do the job the right way. read more

Having problems with my gas furnace, I contacted Beckman for a diagnosis of the problem. I was told the service call would be $75 to which I agreed. The technician arrived, took a quick look at the furnace then handed be a bill for $122! I paid the bill but feel I as misled and used. I will not be using Beckman again. read more

Amazing service. My furnace went out two weeks ago. I called the company that had sticker on my furnace...they came out and told me that I needed a new furnace...and quoted me over$5500 for a new one. Wanting to get a 2nd opinion I called beckman bros....they came out right away and diagnosed me with a bad capicitor and bad high limit swich. They fixed both of the problems, and my furnace was pumping out heat in no time....I highly recomend beckman bros for all heating and ac, they are a very honest company that perfoms great work, and great customer service...... read more

We've been using Beckman Brothers for years (I'm guessing about 15 years) to keep a relatively old furnace going. We've never had a complaint or felt that we were overcharged, and we're particularly grateful for how they've accommodated our busy schedules. We're not particularly close to Grayslake but as far as their service goes they might as well be across town. read more

Good customer service! I just got their annual service plan. I came from a very bad HVAC service company and choose them due to YELP reviews. And the reviews are always accurate. After our AC went out we contacted Beckman Bros and I have to say they were fantastic. When setting up our appt. they gave us a window saying that they'd arrive between 12 and 2 and they arrived a few minutes after 12. Then they were able to quickly identify and correct the problem for a reasonable price. Not only that but they check everything else out to make sure there wouldn't be any other problems with the AC and then they even checked our furnace too. They were incredibly thorough and not only that, but they were educational and helpful too walking us through everything they were doing, checking, and repairing. We learned stuff about our AC and furnace system that we didn't even know. And I will say they didn't tell us this to sell us anything, just to make us aware. We will definitely use them again and I would recommend them to anyone. read more

Called right at 7:30, tech was sitting in front of the furnace by 8:20. He was very kind, upgraded our ignitor to a better designed part and cleaned many of the parts on the inside of our unit for free. Class acts all the way around.
