They were so quick, came back promptly and resolved both issues same day. They didn't even charge for the time to retrieve the part, and they charged a very fair price. After many years of working with this company, the last year has been awful. Does not return calls , finally got some one to speak with in the office, sent a furnace repair guy when our boiler was broke. (We know the difference as our home has both). The service tech kept taking on the phone to Don the owner as he did not know what he was doing, charged $400 for nothing. The next morning not only was the heat not working, the basement flooded! The Tech they sent did NOT know what he was doing. Nice enough but not a qualified service tech . Kept insisting he had to check the furnace but it wasn't the problem. However, he must have done something to our furnace as now we have a broken humidifier. Requested a refund which Don (Owner) finally agreed to, in writing, then did not credit our account so we had to contest it with the credit card. Pitiful service. They, of coarse, try to say we called for furnace service. We did not. They took no accountability to remedy situation or the fact the service tech was unqualified for boilers or furances. I manage a Construction & Restoration company here in Chicago. Furnace went out in the dead of winter at my personal home. My HVAC contractors were unavailable at the time. Don and his wife are fabulous, they worked with us after hours and over the weekend to get a part for our furnace. Given they did a so/so job with my furnace (per the inspector) I called cooks for a second opinion. There was nothing wrong with the AC. I wanted to upgrade the humidifier in our downtown Chicago condo so that we could control it remotely when we travel. We have had a Nest with its remote app for a decade for heat and AC, but it did not control the old humidifier. Our renovation contractor hired this company for this task. Don recommend switching to the new ecobee thermostat which handles accessories well. We agreed. To be clear, this was not a typical installation. High rise building, central chilled water for AC, baseboard heating, vented Humidifier with 2 building mandated safety relays to prevent severe condensation issues. Certainly not a simple setup. Don couldn't get it working on his first try. He said our wiring was faulty. The building engineer said it's not faulty, just more complicated than a residential install. He offered to walk Don through the wiring and relays and is onsite from 6am til 2pm every weekday but no one called him. Don said he got everything working on the second try but was taking a loss on the labor as he passed on only a fraction of his extra hours which we appreciated. We moved back in a month or so later to find that not only the humidifier didn't work, but neither did heat or AC. After multiple calls and emails requesting a callback or a visit, he finally called and said he was too busy and didn't have the manpower to help us, but he would credit back $300 of our $1800 labor charge. My new installer needed about $400 worth of time to assess and then rewire to get the heat and AC working again, and another $300 to get the humidifier connected to the new thermostat and safety relays. All now works well and I can control all 3 components from the ecobee app. I can only speak to my specific install and I fully understand that it wasn't a typical single family home system. My problem is that he refused to take advantage of expertise offered, blamed it on the building wiring (the next guy was able to make it all work), and then went unresponsive and bailed on us. If he had either a) looked at the job and passed on it, b) realized it was more complicated than he thought and accepted free assistance from the "home field" expert, c) responded to our requests for help quickly instead of waiting days, or d) apologized and committed to make us whole financially when we had to hire someone else, then I wouldn't have felt the need to post this review. We did not have a good experience using this company to upgrade our humidifier. Our contractor did step in and make us whole financially. read more

Highly recommended! I can't tell you how many times our hot water has gone out in the past. We have a boiler system and have had many problems over the past year. After working with 2 local HVAC companies, who were unable to correct the problem, I contacted the boiler manufacturer for a recommendation. This led me to Cook's Heating and Cooling. She told me she would call me back if someone was able to come out, I expected to wait some time so called a few other places, but she promptly called me back and told me Don would be here within the hour, which he was. He took the time to explain everything to me, we unfortunately had to go with a replacement but his team came out Monday morning, finished the job on time. I'm disappointed!! They didn't fix the problem & left me stranded after paying $160! My AC went out on a 90 degree day. Don came out Monday afternoon, he said our AC unit looked good but he added Refrigerant because it was low, he charged me $160 and left. It was OK for a few days but the next HOT day it stopped working again. I called Cooks again and they said they'd call me back... but didn't. I called back AGAIN and they said "you need a new AC unit". I was disappointed but I said "OK, can you give me a quote" I haven't heard back. I called back AGAIN to ask about the quote but still didn't hear anything. I guess they don't want my business I called another company to come out. He said we needed a new capacitor. He replaced it on the spot and so far so good. IF i need a new AC unit, i wont be using Cook's I wanted to like a family business & he was nice when he came out.. but he didn't stand behind his work and left a customer hanging. read more

Where to begin? Don Cook is very honest and professional. Two years ago we built a single family home in Lincoln Park by a reputable design/build firm. After the close we discovered our home was not built with an adequate size water tank, boiler and even booster pump. Imagine the frustration! We had many vendors inspect the situation and all were in agreement that the three items were under-sized for our home......in which we were constantly running out of hot water, and did not have enough water pressure....not to mention what would happen if multiple showers were running at the same time. We are extremely happy that we chose to resolve our issues with the help of Cook's Heating and Cooling. What I like most about Don is he is knowledgable enough to plan ahead for the appropriate demands of the system....first with PEN AND PAPER. He then openly discussed the issues with us, and made appropriate calculations and recommmendations of which brands to use. He actually cares, and wants to make sure we are happy with the result, and we are. He executed the replacement of our water tank, with a corresponding adequate boiler, and also replaced the booster pump such that now even when we have guests visiting, the water pressure doesn't get lost when multiple showers are running, and we have never run out of hot water! It seems like it is impossible to find good and reliable contractors, but Don has twice shown himself to be the exact opposite. If he says 9a, it's 9 or he'll call you and let you know he'll be 15 minutes late. He's a straight shooter and instead of trying to sell me something, he'd rather fix the problem and help me keep what I have in the house. He's also VERY reasonably priced. I have an older (25+ years) AC unit that began to ice over on hot days. The issue was a stuck TCV that required a bit of effort and knowledge to diagnose and repair. We had Cook's on two recent occasions. Both times they were able to come with in few hours and address the heating issue. First time - it was a Sunday. They had to replace a furnace switch. On the second occasion, we already figured out and addressed the problem ourselves(intake and outflow vents were blocked with ice and snow and we cleaned out, reset the furnace switch) by the time they showed up. However, we were still happy to pay for the visit due to the promptness and courtesy of service. The guy double checked everything though. Cook's has serviced my furnaces and AC units for the last two years. This summer I called them for an intermittent issue with one of AC units blowing fuses in the furnace. They spent most of a day logically troubleshooting the issue until they determined it was the compressor after changing and testing all other choices. Rather than make an expensive repair on my old system, I asked for a quote to replace the faulty one and for both. The price was great so I had both units replaced with new Trane systems. They knew I needed an AC unit and was essentially in a bind and yet the price was still excellent. The work was done quickly and professionally. They are honest and answer your questions without being condescending or bothered. I really cannot see myself using anyone else in the future. read more

DO NOT PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEGATIVE REVIEWS! I am so impressed with Don Cook! He was going to fix my 96 year old father's furnace because it wasn't heating his house on a very cold day. But, prior to his arrival, we changed the batteries in my Dad's thermostat & that seemed to fix the heating problem. While I was a bit leery about canceling Don's service call, my father insisted I do so, saying it was going to be an unnecessary expense for him - a man on a limited income. Don suggested he could still stop by & give the furnace a quick look, which would alleviate any concern I might have that there might be something else wrong with the furnace besides the thermostat needing new batteries. I explained that my father didn't want the expense of a service call, and this wonderful man said he would not charge Dad if no repairs were needed. After Don checked everything, he said the furnace was working fine & there was no charge. (Luckily, he even noticed I had replaced the furnace filter upside down!) I then suggested that since Don was already at the house, he might as well perform winter maintenance on the furnace. While he could have easily charged my Dad for that service he was honest & said that wasn't even needed! Because my encounter with Don showed him to be an honest & knowledgeable person, I felt compelled to write a review & let others know about his integrity.
