Beckmann's pies are World class! I've eaten so many flavors, and I finally figured out my favorite: it's blueberry pie! It's not too sweet, and the whole blueberries inside are plump and juicy. Apple pie is great heated and à la mode, and pecan pie is FABULOUS during the Fall holidays (though a tad sweet, but soooo crunchy and the crust is buttery perfection). I also love the humor and friendliness of the man who is always at the Beckmann's stall at the farmer's markets! He is such a hoot. Once we were having such a good time hootin' and hollerin' that we garnered a crowd, and they didn't know what was going on. We got exposed to Beckmann via a small sample of the blueberry pie at the Mountain View farmers market. It is probably one of the best bites I've ever had in terms of pie. You can taste natural blueberry and it wasn't overly sweet. It was perfect. The crust was flaky. We ended up getting a strawberry rhubarb pie because my daughter absolutely loves tart pies. Heat it up and it's amazing. this has been one of the best finds for us because we love pie, but what holds us back generally is how sweet it is and the lack of fruit. I tried this place for the first time at the Saturday farmers market at Cabrillo College. Every week when I pass by, the man offers me a sample of blueberry pie, and he is always incredibly kind and generous. This week, he offered me both blueberry pie and an almond bear claw after I asked to try the bear claw. He gave me half a bear claw to sample, which was so generous. The bear claw was to die for. He also had a great sense of humor. He joked that if you try to fight a bear with one of the bear claws and lose, it is money back guaranteed. That little moment brought everything to life. I loved the vibe! He even let me try some cookies. Usually, we are not easy to convince from samples, but we ended up leaving with several bear claws. I truly appreciated his kindness, his smile, and, of course, the delicious food. Highly recommend. read more

I wish they had a local store! I encounter Beckmann's in person at our local weekend market in Evergreen Square. They are there religiously with a nice selection every time. But get there early as they sell out of their favorites very quickly. I've also found them at Silver Creek Community Market and Lunardi's. I'm sure they are other places, too but if you're craving some of their products during the week you might find it there. FOOD: Beckmann's is truly one of the best commercial pies you can buy. Honestly the best in my opinion. Most commercial pies taste...well, commercial. Beckmann's taste like it just came out of the oven and cooled in the window sill on a bright summer's day. Terrific crust, nice and flaky. Great filling, no matter what pie you get. And they also serve other items. Personally, the rest is good but not as good as the pies (except for the chocolate covered peanut butter cookies)! That doesn't mean the rest isn't good. It just means the pies are SO good. My favorites are pecan (1st), peach (2nd), and cherry (3rd). SERVICE: At our local community market, they always have great service. The people helping out are enthusiastic and knowledgeable. The only ding would be how fast they do sell out. COST: A little pricey, but the quality can't be denied! For what you get, I feel like it's more than worth it. Beckmann's baked goods are uniformly excellent and much better than most found in grocery stores (with a few exceptions). Buying at the farmers market is a fun outing in itself since one sees a slice of humanity: neighbors, adorable children & babies, old hippies, etc. However, the vendor on duty at the booth can either enhance the outdoor shopping trip or greatly detract from it. Over the years, we've had several different Beckmann vendors at the Alameda farmers market, and Connie has been among the best if not THE best. We miss her and wish her well always. The current woman vendor is cranky, judgey and quite authoritarian to boot (pun intended). Although I've bought from Beckmann's at our farmers market for many years, that has recently become so irksome that I've looked for and found other sources: Sunmaid cinnamon swirl raisin bread at Safeway's; 3-seed sourdough bread at Trader Joe's; and - soon - sourdough cheese bread from elsewhere where the clerks provide more than a semblance of customer service. Delicious, delicious pies! Hailed from Santa Cruz, CA, Beckmann's is a bakery without a retail storefront. Several of my friends have been raving about their pies for years. I finally got a chance to try them out recently and I must say, they were right! The two pies I had were the Berry Bomb and traditional apple. The crust was simply amazing - flaky and buttery with a beautiful golden brown color. The filling of the Berry Bomb, made with four different types of berries, had a balanced sweet and tart taste. The apple pie filling was not overly sweet and had some texture in it. Both were very enjoyable. Prices were reasonable. The Berry Bomb was $24 and the apple one was $22. Tried the sticky buns for the first and last time. They show up every weekend to my local farmers market and consistently have amazing baked goods! The people running the stand are always kind and I never have had a bad experience in a year of getting baked goods here. I've tried all of their pastries and they are all delicious. It really comes down to your preference for pastries/pies in general but you won't be limited in choice by the quality of different options. Picture this, Friday @ the farmers market in Monterey (Munras Shopping mall), my wife and I were picking up our weekly fruit and veggies and spotted the Beckmann's stall... nicely packaged up were cherry turnovers and my wife was all over this with 'OMG that will go great with a coffee and their sealed so nobody will have coughed on them', so we purchased and rushed home with our spoils. I spit what's causing the challenge into my hand and find to my horror its a foil mint sweet wrapper ! I'm fearfully now thinking... was this just a wrapper or was this a wrapper that had a chewed sweet inside it and was dropped in the mixer ! I don't show my wife as I didn't want her freaking out... I immediately wrote to Beckmanns and inform them of this suggesting incident, that I have a photo and asked what they would like to do about it and sadly I haven't even heard back from them ! I have now courtseoulsy left it 4 days in case they were slow to respond but this is obviously not the case and their preference was to ignore and hope it blew over !... This is one of the best bakery's for fresh breads and cookies in the bay! Found them at the Saratoga Farmers market and have been visiting them almost every time I'm at the market now! My go to orders are the jalepeno cheese bread and the peanut butter cookies! Bread: perfect when toasted, light and crispy with kicks of spice. Really good on its own or for making grilled cheese, because you can never have too much cheese!!! Cookies: I'm usually not a fan of peanut butter cookies but these are AMAZING!!! They are soft and chewy, as a good cookie should be, with a natural peanut taste that isn't too sweet and doesn't taste fake at all (my biggest gripe with peanut butter flavored desserts is that they usually taste really fake and sugary)! I have been buying Beckman's 3-Seed Sourdough bread for over 20 years, even as it declined in flavor, freshness, and texture over the past 10+ years. It almost always arrives at stores too dry to eat un-toasted. Surely nobody uses it for sandwiches without toasting it. Now, the seeds on the outside are so bitter that I must trim the crusts before eating it. My complaints got no response from management. I once spoke to the baker. He acknowledged that they had trouble finding sunflower seeds that weren't bitter, and admitted they lost their best grain supplier. I dropped the brand totally and switched brands until that brand ceased to be available. Recently I bought some Francese Rolls. There was NO bread inside the outer crust. When toasted as per the directions, they turned out hollow inside, with only a thin outer "shell" of bread . . . uneatable! Phone calls to management went unanswered. Messages not returned. They refused my request for a refund via message. I'll get a refund from Safeway. The management at Becknann's seems to be clueless of their decline in quality. I'll never buy another loaf of their bread. Luckily I found a competitor's great moist and extra sourdough that is wonderful. read more

Beckmann's used to have a retail presence but hasn't for some time. They sell their wonderful pies in supermarkets, but the problem is you can only buy very basic types. The boysenberry, cherry, rum-laced pecan and strawberry rhubarb pies are incredible but often very difficult to find. They sell their pies at farmers markets in larger quantities than markets, but often run out. The pies are the big treat and it's frustrating to see their lorries on the highway all-the-time but it's so difficult to get anything of interest. Sometimes, they'll make smaller pies that are produced in higher quantity for the markets. I'm sure they have the problem of not being able to make product fast enough, but it's too difficult to buy and having to go to a farmers market is too much work and still no guarantee you'll get what your looking for. Given they already have a bakery in Santa Cruz, it's frustrating they cannot sell product there, or create a second location that's both baking product and retail. They can never seem to keep pies in stock at the local supermarket chains and so they probably miss a lot of profit. While it's cheap for them to sell goods at a farmers market, it's not convenient for customers and eliminating profit. Thus, only 3 stars for such wonderful pies and friendly staff at farmers markets but poor logistics, production and supply. It's irritating to see their lorries multiple times on the highway in one day, but not being able to get any kind of pie I'd like. With this being said, I haven't ever seen or tried their bread but I can't imagine it's very easy to get unless you go to a Santa Cruz grocer. Lastly, they have online ordering, but how practical is next-day UPS air for a pie; especially when you live in the region? I wonder if the pie would be edible. Bread goods don't ship well and it's too expensive to get next-day air when you can drive to the bakery. I'd be angry if I was an investor, because they have a great product but can't manage, produce or sell it very well. Most reviews I add lots of photos, but that's not necessary here. You can see them on their website, as you might go over a year before seeing many of the pies in your local grocer. This outfit could easily garner a 4 or 5 star review otherwise, so they have potential. The products fine, it's just managed poorly. Two drunk undergrads in a dorm could deduce they need to make more product, or reduce how many places they sell it...it's not rocket science. read more

I asked the person selling their products at the farmers market if this was really German apple strudel because I was bringing it to a German store (not to sell, just to enjoy) He told me it was. He was not truthful, but let's not make this about him. Apple strudel or Apfelstrudel, Is a delicate pastry with finely rolled dough and thinly sliced apples and a mild yet tasteful cinnamon sugar seasoning. This pastry was a chunk of Filo dough on either end and a bread covering over the top, there was so much cinnamon and sugar in it that I wonder what they were trying to cover. Were the apples bad? I can tell you that the apples were far too large. You could put "minced" nuts into it, though not usually. But you do not put chunks of walnuts in it. If they wanted to call this a cinnamon raisin apple pastry of their design maybe I wouldn't be making this review. But, they called it apple strudel, the sales person confirmed it was good strudel, and they're charging Twice the price of a store front bakery for it. This type of misrepresentation at a high cost actually puts me off of the brand. Buy their bread if you want, but stay away from anything else they make. I think they need to focus on their breads and stop making all these other things that they do not have any talent for. read more

I love pie! Ever since I first tasted the glorious Oregon blackberry over a decade ago while in Washington State, I've had Marionberry mania --- pie, ice cream, jam, in whatever form. You won't find Marionberry anything beyond the Pacific Northwest, so when I found a Beckmann's pie, I had to have it. While strawberries costarred with the divine berry, it was enough to satisfy my craving. This local Northern California artisan bakery dedicates itself to baking with natural ingredients and created a taste sensation hugged by a flakey, buttery crust. I'm not a pie fanatic... I typically even pass on "pies" when I see them on dessert tables. But this Rum-laced Pecan pie is the best I've had! My husband bought it for Christmas after falling in love from trying a sample at his job. Follow the instructions, if frozen, keep it frozen until you bake it. I have some left over, there's no instructions on how to save it but our friends bought the same pie and they froze the pie again, and baked it once they wanted to eat it again and apparently it tasted even better. For our May wedding, we opted to go with pies to match our camp-style wedding venue. We knew we wanted a local business and had had many of Beckamnn's pies through their farmer's markets around the Bay. We had shared the idea with our wedding coordinator who then surprised us with inviting Beckmann's to the venue's couple's meet and greet event. There, we met Kristen who helped with ordering and logistics. Kristen had lots of samples on hand that day for us to try and my husband and I were able to walk away from that event with an idea of which ones to have on hand for the wedding. It was a super simple process to order, almost no fuss, done through email. For 105 guests, we ordered 18 pies, also knowing that we wanted leftovers (that could be frozen for later!) They offered an affordable delivery option or pick up at the local farmer's market at Cabrillo College and since our wedding venue was in Soquel, we asked a family member to pick it up the morning of the wedding. The best part of the whole experience was that the pies were sold at the same (or similar) price as what you would get at the farmer's market and it wasn't a wedding mark up, like everything else in the wedding industry. The evening of the wedding, we served 4 varieties of pies (rum-laced pecan, cherry, berry bomb, and apple) with ice cream and our guests LOVED it!!! While we loved all their pie varieties, it was the rum-laced pecan that our guests talk about to this day and request for family gatherings. This is one of the best bakeries for bread in the Bay Area to the central coast. They bake with more natural ingredients and less preservatives than most bakeries.
