The worst bbq ever! Super dry meat, corn bread so dry it crumbled looking at it. This is the 5th time ordering and always dry. How do you make brisket dry? Letting it sit under a heat lamp for days. DO NOT ORDER!!! I'm sorry to the owner. I have a son with over 30 years in food service (and a JB winner) I won't review a place unless I've eaten at least 3 times. Corn bread was dry and so was the brisket. So I'm getting fresh out of the smoker brisket? If so, source better meat. Use local. I wanted to find a great bbq. You're not it. I want to update my original review. I went back a second time and the sausage was freaking perfect!!! I was so excited when I saw it. I knew exactly how it was gonna have that snap and amazingness I was loo for. I do wanna say I did ask for pickles and onions again and was told again they didn't have. I am writing this review after my second time eating here and I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone. I have gotten the brisket both times and it is incredible, they offer you a bun to eat it as a sandwich as well. The jalapeño cheddar sausage is something that I would also highly recommend, someone else in my party got it and the casing around the sausage was extremely firm and the meat itself was full of flavor. I also really enjoyed the amount of sides this restaurant had to offer out of the ones that I got I really enjoyed the cornbread, it was extremely moist and had the perfect amount of sweetness. I also got the Mac and cheese which is honestly something I would just get by itself. It was so good!! My dad absolutely loves the baked beans that has apple slices in it, they are such a unique touch and something I would definitely recommend you try once. there is so many other sides that there are as well and a case full of desserts as well that look incredible. Something neat about this place is they offer all their food in big packages to go that is packed in their freezers. There is plenty of places to sit in the restaurant and it was very clean inside, all of the staff at the counter were also incredibly helpful. I really wanted to love this place, after the closing of Papa Bear's and BBQ Joint. I tried the ribs, brisket, beans, mac & cheese, and pie. The ribs were not how I like them. People always say "falling off the bone" but if the meat falls off before you get a chance to bite it off, why are you eating ribs? You might as well eat pulled or shredded meat. They also were lacking in flavor, with no discernible smoke. The meat quality was good, but it was too tender for my taste. The brisket was much better, perfectly tender, thick sliced, with some natural flavor. Still lacking in smoke. There were three sauce options. I liked one, did not like the other two. The beans were probably the most flavorful part of the meal. They were sweet and tangy and well seasoned. The mac & cheese was cheesy, but that was it. The homemade key lime pie was amazing. it wasnt overwhelmingly bitter, it almost tasted like lime cheesecake. I want this place to do well, they are off to a good start and have lots of room to improve. Madison needs them to. But for now, I'll probably prefer Smoky Jon's. read more

We were in the area from out of town, and this place came highly recommended. We actually went out of our way somewhat to try it. Friendly I will say, seemed clean, but very disappointed in the food. I ordered rib tips, and I know some fat is normal, but it was ALOT!! I picked off the big hunks of fat and it was half the portion I received, and for the price they charge, NOT acceptable. After the fat hunks were off, I'd then say it was pretty good, just not much left by then. Potato salad, was horrible, like from prepackaged horrible deli style, beans were just ok. My husband had brisket and said it was ok also. Definitely wasn't worth the higher price, and I don't mind paying for good food. We were both quite disappointed!! read more

When I stopped in to try Beef Butter for the first time, I was greeted by one of the gentlemen formerly of Jim's Meats (the north side's famed butcher shop that was forced to close last year by an expanding Kwik Trip ((I know))), and I instantly became more excited to try. I opted for the weekend special, bone-in beef rib, with a side of their white cheddar Mac and cheese. With family in Austin, TX - I am constantly on the look out for beef rib and it is a VERY rare find outside of Texas. Beef Butter's did not disappoint. It was highly above average, and honestly pretty damn close to what you'd find at La Barbecue or Franklin's in Austin. The Mac and cheese side was also considerably above average. I feel like Mac and cheese is really easy to do in a mediocre way, and not as easy to make stand out, but I will for sure be having some with every visit. It's your basic Mac and cheese shells with a thicker cheddar sauce, very simple but just about perfect. I feel so silly for taking so long to try this place, and can't wait to help spread the word. As Madison continues to expand the boundaries of "downtown," the north side will do well if more establishments like Beef Butter BBQ come along (but let's consider the north side bbq market spoken for at the moment). read more

Reading through all the reviews here I realize that people have quite different tastes for food. Overall food was great and well worth 4 stars. The brisket was a bit drier than I would like, however I did love the ribs which were tender, juicy and flavorful. For the sides I had the baked beans made with apple pie fillings and potato salad, both of them were very good. What makes this place 5 star for me and also drives me to write this review is the passion of the business owner I believe. The way he greeted me and explained the menu showed how he cares about his business and his customers. To be fair I don't get to talk to all business owners on my restaurant visits, but his passion really make this place stand out from 300+ local restaurants I have visited in Madison. As an avid rib eater and Northside resident for a few years, the biggest question for me is: How does Beef Butter BBQ (BBB) compare to Smokey John's (SJ)? Note: I'm not a brisket fan. Interior: Its clean, spacious, pretty and modern. Very homey/welcoming and they serve alcohol. There was at least 1 TV playing the badger game. Clearly major renovations done after habaneros moved. I don't know if the drive thru is a part of their business model. Customer Service: Looks like a family business. The people I interacted with were kind and efficient. The young man at the counter gave a thorough explanation of the smoked apple pie baked beans. Young woman at the check out handled my stupid question gracefully. :) Food: This is hard. I like SJ's ribs. BBB is equivalent in a different way. SJ ribs are thinner, less meaty but have more of a smokey flavor and you get more ribs so they probably about even out. SJ glazes their ribs with a sweet/hot sauce and BBB let's you chose your own. I saw 3: hot, medium and sweet. Frankly, I mixed them and it turned out great. I think the medium (Andrea's?) was the best overall for a mix of flavor and sweet heat. I appreciate the application and caramelization of the sauce on SJ ribs more, though. Sorry BBB. However, the ribs I got were FAYT! Thick and juicy. AND their sides were better. SJ falls seriously short of the mark when it comes to their sides and BBB's are much better. I got the baked beans (brisket in the beans is what does it for me) and the coleslaw. Coleslaw was decent and the beans were good. I'd love to see mashed potatoes on the menu cause SJ's potatoes are a huge disappointment. I think a chunkier coleslaw would fit the vibe of the restaurant better. Price: I got the rib dinner and with tip it came to about $15. Cheaper than SJ for my usual fare. No roll, but I can't eat bread so that's a moot point for me. I was offered a drink but turned it down, I'm unclear if it was included or not. I usually get water anyway. My personal preference: Have thicker BBQ sauce and a more rustic coleslaw. And, well, mashed potatoes but the beans are plenty delicious. I'd die if they had a wing night! There's not a place for 20+ minutes in any direction that has any kind of chicken wings. Overall: Its a definite plus that you can sample the meat! Who does that? Awesome!! I will definitelybe trying other items on the menu here and I'm glad to have more delicious restaurants in the area! Also, as previous reviewer Lindsay stated, the take away containers are fantastic. They're plastic, not styrofoam so hopefully recycling is an option! Also, the cups for take away sauce is a nice touch cause you're gonna want extra. It's that good. read more

Absolutely the best brisket I have ever had and been to a lot of the best BBQ places in many states including TX. From the brisket to the ribs , corn bread and even kettle chips. The restaurant is clean and well decorated . Fun to watch the BBQ cam on TV as well. This place is worth the drive wherever you live if even just to take-out. Friendly service. Beef Butter BBQ is one of those places you think about on a cold, Madison evening to warm your soul and your stomach. I've been to Beef Butter 3-4 times in the past few months for take out. I went a few times during Restaurant Week(s), which was a solid deal! The best part about doing a pick-up order from BB BBQ is their cams that show their smoker and grill. It shows the meat slowly creating their flavor and juicy-ness. It makes you hype to eat the delicious meats they create! Top choices are definitely the brisket and pulled pork. The employees are always super pleasant and have the highest level of safety standards. The sides they offer are pretty solid, with the french fries and mac and cheese. I haven't really had a bad meal or item from Beef Butter. I saw that they introduced a 20 foot conveyor belt delivery system for your car. Super innovative and creative, for these times during Covid! This was our first time to Beef Butter and we will absolutely be going again. After looking for BBQ places in Madison we eventually stumbled upon this place. I knew ahead of time we had to visit over the weekend to try their massive (weekend-only) Beef Rib along with the rest of their regular menu. We got the Beef Rib along with the 2 meat platter consisting of their signature brisket and smoked sausage with a side of apple baked beans and white Mac n cheese. Delicious!! The beef was moist and fall off the bone tender and the bark was perfectly seasoned. The cashier was incredibly friendly and upon hearing it was our first time, threw in a side of cornbread and chips on the house. I ordered delivery via EatStreet. I am not a huge BBQ fan to begin with, but it was a Sunday and the Packers were playing and I was stuck at home and all the sudden I got a hankering for BBQ. I got a three meat combo with baked beans and chips and it was super tasty. The portion size was generous and it was exactly what I wanted. A good BBQ experience overall, and I would definitely order again! They have many side options to choose from that all taste amazing in addition to the different meats and levels of heat for barbecue sauces! I simply sent my food choices for my catering request and was able to make edits as needed and provide my final guest count. The food delivery was timely and the food set up was professionally done. They have a branded truck to haul the food over and everything was kept warm! Even with the hour+ travel distance to my venue. Delicious! I was there very close to closing time. I was impressed that they weren't out of what I wanted. I had the brisket and ribs. Everything melted it your mouth. I don't normally order/eat rolls if they don't come with the meal. The picture of it online was my draw into ordering a couple. Since I had about 30 minutes to drive home I ordered 2; one for one the way home and one with the meal. I was excited they were warm. I pulled it out and it was a stinking hamburger BUN!! Not a roll, a bun!!! I was really hungry at the time I was mad!! After I got rid of the hungry crabbies I found it hilarious. But it's a bit pricey for what you get. There are only a couple sauces, that aren't that good, and that require filling little plastic throwaway cups. And the sides are uninspired. I ordered the Madison restaurant meal deal for $25 tonight 5/29. Order number E39, Trying to support north side business. We ordered two deals. One was suppose to have chicken wings, ribs and rib tips the other was brisket, tips and chicken. After paying $52 I was extremely disappointed. The food overall was very dry, over cooked and not very much sauce. The tips were the worst extremely over cooked and dried out, followed by the brisket and the pork lion (that we didn't order but attempted to eat.) I had to add my own BBQ sauce to even be able to consume it. The chicken and ribs were ok but required additional sauce. The sides were the only things that were good. I'd recommend the Mac and cheese and cole slaw. For a local BBQ restaurant I'd recommend hitting up a different establishment vs spending it here. read more

My Wife and I were flying out of Madison and stopped in to Beef Butter BBQ for a late lunch and had some of the best BBQ we had from all over the Country. We were fortunate to stop in to get the first order of Brisket for the evening and it was hands down in the top 3 beef brisket that I have had next to my own and my Brother-in-law's brisket- Very close Second Mark!! I also had the Smoked Pork Ribs- also excellent- fell off the bone but still a little crisp to the bite on the outside with fantastic bbq flavor! 2 sides- Mac & Cheese and Potato Salad- also excellent- tasted like white cheddar- their own sauce for certain and home made potato salad- NO Sysco (shit-co) here!!! My Wife had the Pulled Pork with a single piece of fried Fish on a Friday- both excellent- pork had amazing smoke flavor and the Cod was freshly batter dipped and fried to order- perfectly crispy and very moist on the inside- tartar sauce was good- my preference would be a little more lemon.... She also had the baked beans with smoked pork instead of bacon and caramelized apple instead of brown sugar- again excellent flavors- Overall 6 -Star rating out of 5.... I'v been coming to this BBQ spot since it opened and used to have amazing BBQ in Madison. I just picked up a pound of ribs and some wings and it was simply not edible. My kids called the ribs "mummified". So dry and tasteless that it wasn't salvageable with any condiments. The smoked wings were not any better. $50 plus tip down the drain.
