    Hard fries

Still hard bad fries..... no improvement ... I asked for fresh and they say " yes we always make them fresh".

BEEF WITH HOT ON GARLIC BREAD.

I was very excited about the Italian beef ON GARLIC BREAD and BOY DID IT NOT DISAPPOINT. The bread was had the perfect amount of toast on it and the garlic butter just elevated that beef. The giardinera was really good and the fries are the best fresh cut fries I've had. Crispy and not soggy. We went in on a Sunday afternoon and it was fairly busy but didn't take too long. I'm already craving another beef from Beef Shack!

Supposed to be a juicy beef with cheese, hot peppers and au ju
    Sheila T.

Ordered grub hub and payee for peppers and au ju on the side and crispy fries, The sides were not in the bag and fries were a smashed bunch of under cooked potato's in a heap, shame because when we actually drove to the Beef Shack when it first opened food was great

    They've got plenty of potatoes

I actually came here on the recommendation of a hairstylist next-door. I wasn't planning on eating lunch here, but she mentioned it was brand new and apparently it was all the rave. The recommended item was the beef sandwich on garlic bread, so naturally that's the direction I went. I'll say that it was certainly tasty, but really nothing beyond what I would have expected. The entire sandwich was pretty sticky and falling apart, but I suppose that's to be expected. Hand cut fries were good, and extra salty, which I'm cool with. All in all I'd say it's a pretty solid place to stop and grab a bite but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way for it.

I have been a loyal customer for over 15 years, visiting about three times a month, and I always order the same thing: the Famous Chicken Gyro (#14, no tomatoes) with a fresh, made-to-order sack of fries. Until now, I have never had a problem. On 12/15 at approximately 5:10 PM, I came in and ordered my usual and dined in. When I bit into the gyro, after getting past the honey mustard, the chicken was hard, crusty, and completely dried out--clearly overcooked from sitting too long on the rotisserie. While disappointing, I didn't make a big deal out of it. I finished my fries, which were still hot and fresh, and calmly showed the cashier the gyro. I spoke quietly and respectfully and explained that the chicken wasn't good. She was polite and said they would remake it. I thanked her several times and explained that I normally don't complain, but I was hungry and on a short lunch break. I asked if I could take the replacement to go since I was running late. As I grabbed my jacket and returned to the counter, I overheard the cashier telling the two cooks something along the lines of, "It's not like that--he's a nice guy and comes here all the time." I took this as her trying to explain that I wasn't trying to get free food, just that the gyro had been poorly prepared. When I returned to work and opened the replacement gyro, I was shocked. There was a broom bristle placed inside the chicken gyro, hidden under a large amount of honey mustard. I have spent a significant amount of money at this business over the years, and I am beyond angry and disappointed. Putting what appears to be a dirty broom bristle--used to clean floors--into a customer's food is unacceptable, unsanitary, and malicious. Because of how this was handled and how I was treated, I will never return. I am filing complaints and sharing this experience publicly so others are aware. This is not about a bad gyro--it's about employee behavior and food safety, and I hope ownership takes this seriously.

I wish I could articulate what brain processes led to the "FAJITAS" category screaming out at me…read morewhile I was looking over the extensive Baba's menu but I really can't say. What I can tell you is that I ordered the steak and chicken mixed option fully prepared for it to be a let down but I am so happy I gave them a chance because they were not half bad. As you can see from photos there's nice sized servings of beef and chicken tossed with much more onions, peppers, tomatoes and seasoning than I expected. It also comes with plenty of nicely cooked tortillas for scooping up all the goodness into a couple of tacos as well as shredded lettuce, sour cream, and some of Baba's mild sauce. I like the mild sauce on other menu items like the chicken but don't feel it works very well with the fajitas. I ended up adding some leftover salsa of my own that I had in the fridge. I have to admit that one thing that drew me to this order was a picture I saw on the menu showing that the fajitas came with pita bread as opposed to tortillas. It just seemed like a very intriguing combo to me. I was still happy with the tortillas but have to admit that not being able to satisfy my curiosity did bother me. Would be kind of cool if they gave the option to choose pita or tortillas. I ordered using the Baba's app and the food was ready at the quoted pickup time of 20 mins. The woman cleaning up for closing and working the counter was an absolute sweetheart. Gave the perfect amount of lemon pepper when I said just a little and was just so friendly.

Plus, I'm not sure I'm interested in "steak" from a takeout joint in an old Pizza Hut building. (This I know, is unscientific and eventually unfair, but I know what I like). After reading a few Yelps claiming this is a Chicago legend, and some interesting stories about the founder. I figured I'd try it. I almost bailed, 'cos the outer perimeter had more litter than I cared to see, but I remembered my edict that sometimes the worse a place looks, the better the chow. Inside, it was brightly lit, almost garishly so. As funky as it looked outside, it was spotless inside. I didn't see any kitchen equipment in the parking lot, so I didn't the outer circuses sway me. I had read the "GymShoe" (A legendary Chicago comestible-google it) was one of the top choices, so there I went. Also heard their breaded Mushrooms were great, I added it to my order. Didn't look at the receipt after I ordered, and it was a good thing. More on that later. I took a seat and watched the non-stop procession of customers. Each one opening their white clamshell and giving the contents a massive dose of whatever was in the industrial shaker. Now I was intrigued. I sat and I sat and I sat, almost 30 minutes waiting for my food. I thought maybe they forgot about me. I looked at my receipt and it was near $30! For a sandwich and mushrooms? WTF? They finally called me. They handed me a bag that weighed as much as a bowling ball. Inside was an aluminum tray one might find in a catering order. Turns out the "Crispy GymShoe" is an oversized behemoth sandwich with a full order of fresh-cut fries. Well. As I left, he held the afore-mentioned shaker aloft and asked if I wanted "Lemon Pepper" on my sandwich. So THAT was what was in there!! I declined-as it is my custom to always taste the dish the way the chef intended it, before I modify or embellish. I et the sandwich for 3 days, that's how massive it was, and still put a portion out for the backyard critters on the 4th. I never finished the fries. The Mushrooms were good, not great, but they were bit players in the drama-The "CrispyGymShoe" was Brando in this drama. It was a rich, rich sarnie with Gyros, Corned Beef and Italian Beef (I think). along with cheese and grilled onions (again I think). I et about a third of each massive hunk before I had to stop. It was a juggernaut. In the end, it was a good sandwich, not a masterpiece. I kind of carped about the $18.99 price tag above, but this football of a sandwich could probably feed 3 people, maybe 4 if there weren't starving. at $4 per mouth and change, that's a good deal. The menu is massive and I'll return for at least a Gyros. I wonder how the Lemon Pepper would taste with that...

They're situated on the south end of strip mall home to a Rosati's and a Subway. They opened in mid-April 2024 (the space used to be All Star Diner) and the banner outside almost seems temporary. Hopefully they're here for more than just a short stint because..... The gyros sandwich ($8) was great with a good portion of seasoned gyro meat, onions, tomato, and tzadziki. Fries were fine, same style as Mcdonalds and just as salty, which I liked. I'm typically a crinkle cut guy, though these tasted better than they looked. The 'dinger' ($10) disappointingly did not come with fries--as all other hot dogs did--but I still enjoyed it. This unique Southside item is a tamale inside a chili cheese dog with onions and sport peppers. Though tasty, I wouldn't get this again (ridiculously carb-heavy) and will stick with a loaded chili cheese dawg on future visits. Both times I've stopped in for lunch, they had JERRY SPRINGER on TV! Maury and Dr Phil might be super trashy television, but they'll never match the hair-pulling, chair-throwing WTF insanity of the Jerry f*cking Springer show. * TL;DR * Not all of us have the luxury of taking a 'business lunch'; most of the time we've gotta grab-N-go before our boss texts us "where are you?" Hole-in-the-wall places like this serving hot dogs/gyros/etc are some of my favorite ones to hit up around midday. There's usually a few solid menu items and stereotypically gruff counter service, plus a bevy of customers that look like they just finished 1st shift at the construction site. It's always nice to have a place like Halsted Street Dawgs around.
