BLUE COLLAR MAN A hard day's work demands a hearty lunch. Halsted Street Dawgs is a relatively new counter service joint on Weber Rd in Romeoville. They're situated on the south end of strip mall home to a Rosati's and a Subway. They opened in mid-April 2024 (the space used to be All Star Diner) and the banner outside almost seems temporary. Hopefully they're here for more than just a short stint because..... The gyros sandwich ($8) was great with a good portion of seasoned gyro meat, onions, tomato, and tzadziki. Fries were fine, same style as Mcdonalds and just as salty, which I liked. I'm typically a crinkle cut guy, though these tasted better than they looked. The 'dinger' ($10) disappointingly did not come with fries--​as all other hot dogs did--but I still enjoyed it. This unique Southside item is a tamale inside a chili cheese dog with onions and sport peppers. Though tasty, I wouldn't get this again (ridiculously carb-heavy) and will stick with a loaded chili cheese dawg on future visits. Both times I've stopped in for lunch, they had JERRY SPRINGER on TV! Maury and Dr Phil might be super trashy television, but they'll never match the hair-pulling, chair-throwing WTF insanity of the Jerry f*cking Springer show. * TL;DR * Not all of us have the luxury of taking a 'business lunch'; most of the time we've gotta grab-N-go before our boss texts us "where are you?" Hole-in-the-wall places like this serving hot dogs/gyros/etc are some of my favorite ones to hit up around midday. There's usually a few solid menu items and stereotypically gruff counter service, plus a bevy of customers that look like they just finished 1st shift at the construction site. Went there recently. Was there for 45 minutes and we were the only people in there until right towards the end two other people came in. This was a prime dinner time, in the 6 o'clock hour. Had a gyro with fries. The fries were way overly salty. To the point where they were almost inedible. I can understand now why they were not busy. It looked like there were two high school kids running the place. Not sure what's going on, but it's not good. read more

The 2 dogs and fries were solid. I especially like the fries. Hot, crisp, and thin cut. Don't have much to add. Will try again. I think they used to be a doggie dinner. read more

The staff is very friendly and welcoming. I've been there a handful of times and was always greeted with friendly service. I've had a handful of items. They're all what you would expect from a hot dog/ gyro joint. Nothing disappointed me nor stood out better than anything else. I like the Italian beef and the burgers are pretty solid also read more

First of all the food is quality cooked to perfection. My family and I have ate almost everything on the menu. The young man that owns it is very polite and makes sure your order is just the way you ordered it. It isn't a very fancy place like Portillo's or Fat Ricky's but the Food is much better. Not overpriced like most restaurants in the area. read more

Recently tried for work lunch, the hot dogs and fries are a must and the gyro on pita is amazing!

1st time in today. It's a Monday at 1:30 I wanted to try them out. When I walked in I was brought back to the neighborhood smell of the hotdog joint I grew up going to. There was nothing fancy inside just simple and not cluttered which is a plus! Plenty of seating but I was planning to eat mine at home. I was immediately greeted and they took my order right away. My food was ready within minutes. He even came from around the counter and handed me my bag. I was shocked but pleased. When I got into the car I decided to tear right into my chili cheese dog and fries. The fries are thinly sliced pretty standard. The chili cheese dog was delicious and I like that it was in a container so all the ooey gooey goodness didn't get all over the place. I was super hungry and actually ate the whole hotdog in 4 bites. The bread was soft (didn't have poppyseeds if that's what you're into). It had the right amount of cheese, onions and chili. After I ate I noticed the bag had another business name on it lol. The food tastes so good!! The fries were perfectly salted and perfectly crunchy! The hot dog, no joke, is better than portillos. I genuinely enjoyed it! My parents tried the fries and they really liked them. My mom said it tasted just like Chicago fries and brought back good memories. 100% will come back for more! 10/10 highly recommend!! Not a lively atmosphere. I tried hamburgers gyros and it was not very good . Specially for the price . We try to give smaller local buisnesses the buisness but didn't seem like they were interested . Employees weren't really friendly either read more

We had the two hot dog special. Our friends had been there previously & did not like the chili but my husband wanted to try it anyway. It is not good. When the lady came to ask how was our meal I said the chili is a bit thick. She apologized & offered to refund the chili. We insisted that she no so instead she brought us a thinner one. We brought them home to "doctor them up". It's great to have a sandwich shop so close to home with such courteous & attentive employees (she also cleaned our garbage for us). Anxious to try the gyros & Italian beef. We will go back (just won't order the chili) :) read more

Really good food, and it came quickly too. Only minor issue was the website, the sign in the store, and the register all had different prices. It was actually cheaper to buy the chicken gyros and fries separately than as a platter because it cost less even though you get the same 2 things with both. read more

While out with my daughter we thought we would stop on the way home and grab some food for the family. Ordered five things. Twenty minutes later finally get two bags of food. Finish my 10 minute drive home and start giving everyone their order. Of course they forgot my daughter's food. The beef was bad and dry, probably the first time in my life I have thrown out an Italian beef sandwich. And yes, was requested 'dipped' or 'wet'. The grilled chicken on pita was like a bowl of soup and loaded with tomatoes, even though I ordered no tomatoes, and had absolutely no flavor. So of the five things ordered, one was missing, two were wrong and tasted terrible. Service was slow, even though I was the only customer and there were three employees. Luckily Pops is right down the street, and everyone is happy now. $40 lesson learned. This place is awful. read more

Horrible 1st experience. Decided to go and try this place.. They don't close until 8pm and we got there at 7:30 , the doors were locked and a worker came up and told us " Sorry we're not open, a worker just left." This is unbelievable especially after they just opened. read more
