Bartenders are just the right amount of "if you're not a regular you're fine but you're not special" and chatty friendly. About a dozen craft brews on draft with a ton more to select from in cans in the fridge (can be enjoyed there or to go). A bunch of options for any beer lover which is always appreciated! I do wish they had flights available, but the bartender let me try a couple before choosing which beer to go with. Food menu was reasonable too - originally we were going to skip food in favor of grabbing a larger meal later on in the night, but after seeing a lot of yummy food leave the kitchen, we ended up splitting a bratwurst and fries. Beer Culture has usurped Blind Tiger for me as my beer bar of choice in Manhattan! They have a tight draft selection that rotates pretty often, and a pretty good can collection in the fridge. The staff have always been friendly and extremely knowledgeable; it is really handy when you can say you live in San Francisco, what do you have that I can only get out here? You can tell it is a good place in Hell's Kitchen/Times Square when stage hands and actors actually come by after (definitely not between) their shows. They also have whiskeys available here as a sidecar; definitely do not try and order any other liquors, the back of their staff shirt makes that clear. For food, I've only ever had the cheese curds because I obviously have a problem and can't get them at many places in SF. The portions are large and the prices reasonable. Beer Culture is a unique and amazing beer bar in New York City. It ended up being the last place we visited that day, and for our entire trip and I felt it was a great cap to our time there. It sits slightly below street level, so it feels you're descending into a sort of basement with low ceilings - the kind of place I grew up first drinking beer with close friends. The place was busy, but the vibe of the customers was that everyone here was a beer lover and many were enjoying and thinking about their beer rather than just downing a bunch of swill. The bartender was super friendly and welcoming from the moment we walked up - (sorry I didn't get his name) thank you to the bartender for doing a sticker swap with me and putting mine right up on the wall. There were seats along the bar, but most people were just standing in groups which made it feel like a party. There were other rooms toward the back and restrooms that were kept clean. They don't do tasters nor flights, which is what I would expect from this type of place. It made me choose carefully, so I went with a summer ale from Schnitt Brewing in Tel Aviv, Israel, and capped off the whole trip with a Double Citra DIPA from Hill Farmstead Brewing, one of the most coveted breweries in the country. Along the right wall were old fridges filled with amazing bottles and cans as well. People were drinking them in the bar, but everything was also available to go. Prices on everything was worthwhile for being in NYC and with great quality/rarity. If you're in NYC and a big beer fan, this is one of those places you can let your beer nerd flag fly. What a chill somewhat small bar. I am sure I have passed it a million times especially when going to see a show on broadway. I was here for a brewery event. It's an easy walk from Midtown and settled off from the busier streets, making it great to stop in after a day of exploring. I stopped in on a Wednesday after a long day of work and picked a Trillium can to drink and ordered dinner to-go. Friendly and quick service. On our first trip, our bar tender, Bo, helped us navigate through some of the local beers. In fact, he recommended my first ever New England style IPA, and I have been hooked ever since. Overall, they have great selections on top, as well as two full refrigerators of local beers, ciders, and seltzers. The place was kind of crowded, but there was one empty table by the entrance, so I just kept my jacket on the whole time to avoid a cold draft every time the door was opened. Okay, let's go back to the Chicago dogs. It costs $8 and comes with pickled pepper, tomato, mustard, relish. It was so scrumptious! Definitely a must-try. There are about 13-14 local beers on tap. Right now they have Two Roads' No Limit, one of my favorite Hefeweizens, from CT on tap, plus a grisette from Threes; Pauwel Kwak, a strong pale ale and Tripel Karmeliet. Whether it's holidays or events or food or drink or...well, while speaking of drink, let's just focus on that for a bit and talk about the culture of beer. Better yet, let's go visit Beer Culture, a nice little beer bar snuggled in the city that never sleeps. You see, my buddy and I had about a half hour to kill before heading up to Terminal 5 for a concert and so the Yelp search began and quickly returned with Beer Culture. Looking at a couple of images, I immediately knew I was going to like this place, but more on that reason in a little. Just a few minutes later, we located the tiny sign and storefront, entering into a bustling craft dive bar. I use that term because Beer Culture encompasses both those ideas under one roof. Seating of varying styles from high tops to barrels, beer stickers all over the walls, a tap list of local brews and other quality choices, and a grungy feel just emanating from the dim lighting, quirky signs, and loudness due to the crowd. None of this was a turn off, though nothing seemed out of the ordinary to other bars that rock craft beer...until you notice one enticingly important piece: the refrigerators. In a similar style to Milk and Hops or even Brew Cheese on Long Island, Beer Culture let's you choose a can from their fridge (a bartender has to open it) and drink it there. Not similarly to those other places is the vast selection of brews BC has collected. It was super impressive to see cans from Evil Twin NYC, Interboro, KCBC, and Transmitter, just to name a few. If we had more than thirty minutes there, I probably would've dove even further into exploring their fridges and drinking plenty of what they had...well, maybe not. I mean, the concept is awesome and the selection is solid, though once I picked my beer can, I realized a mild flaw. I was still in an Evil Twin NYC mindset stemming from a recent trip so I chose a can of one of their beers. The friendly bartender gladly cracked it open and casually told me $10. Yeah, I shouldn't scoff at a 16oz can of craft beer costing that much, but I did. The aura of excited curiosity for what other beers were in the fridge turned into more of a nervous curiosity for how much they might set me back. I suppose that's the price you pay for quality, but that's not always the case. One more quick mention before I sum up the experience. When we walked in, I did noticed a guy walking to a table with a giant Bavarian pretzel, which looked amazing. This led me to believe they had some food to go along with their drink which is always a nice touch. Though the oddity that occurred was while I grabbed my can of beer, my buddy saved a barrel top for us to stand at. I returned and he said some employee put down utensils and napkins, even though my buddy told him we weren't eating. Once done with my can, we both went to the bathroom and on the way back, the same guy quickly said something about our food being at our barrel. My buddy tried to yell to him that we didn't order anything, but he was gone. As we walked back over, there were two plates each holding a huge burger and chips sitting there. Needing to get going so we could get to the show on time, we left the burgers there. For all I know, they sat there for hours (joke), but what I also know is we didn't order any food, and I'm glad I paid for my beer with cash so we weren't wrongfully charged for anything. A comically weird moment on the way out, just worth nothing. Overall, oddities aside, Beer Culture is a pretty cool spot with a concept that definitely makes any craft beer aficionado salivate with excitement. The prices, though not perfect, aren't a deal breaker and they definitely have at least some visually appetizing food options. It all adds up to a place I'd totally check out again in the future. Has a very good local feel to it, with lots of choices of beer from many parts of the US and beyond, great Belgium selection as well (even with some Trappist Wits). Not a ton of tables, but we were able to get one and very much enjoyed the burger, full of taste and cooked perfectly (angus beef). They also have Kielbasa, I mean you can't pass that up when you can have a nice cold craft brew to go with it. It's not an every day item, but man do they know how to make you wish it was an every day item. The service was great, my wife need her feet up due to being pregnant, but they were looking for extra seats, but once they saw she was pregnant they totally understood and looked elsewhere. Had the pickle jar as an appetizer, if you love pickles it's a winner for sure. All in all it might have been the best food we had while in NYC and for NYC prices it wasn't bad at all. Even get cash back through YELP. Would for sure go back and try more of the amazing appetizers they have, they all sound sooo good. Okay I guess, but not the friendliest spot to get a drink. Service has attitude and though the beer is good, some of it can be on the pricey side. I saw a bartender scold a customer because he opened his own can of beer. What is that all about? I assume it's some state law which I don't understand. Unfortunately, neither does the staff. When I asked for clarification from the bartender (just a casual talking point), the response was, "That's the Law. We don't have to give the customer a reason why they can't open their own beer, they just can't. Something about an open container situation, but we really don't know". Hmmm . . . Anyway, Beer Culture also offers whiskey and food. The location is good for getting a drink after a show, I just wish they would loose the attitude. Very knowledgeable staff as we were looking for the original Austin Eastcider and when I asked, the bartender told me it was in the back case (the are two) and she knew exactly what shelf and row it was in. That was seriously impressive! The lower star rating is because we ordered chips and salsa that were ok, nothing special, but mainly because I didn't realize we were overcharged until after the fact. i.e. we were charged for three beers even though we only had two. I thought $12/ beer was a bit steep but there aren't any prices on the beers in the cases so you really have no idea what you're paying. Once I got home and looked more closely at the receipt, I noticed we were charged for three. It's my fault as I should have paid closer attention but they might want to be a little more careful - or it may be something that happens often.
