The first time we came here I think we were looking for some sweet, syrupy, Starbucks-styled iced coffee drink. After asking the barista if they had this, and then that, and this and that again and getting no every time, we finally agreed to just take whatever it was the barista thought we'd like. Solid choice. Really tastefully done coffee. The baristas (at least in 2014 and 2015) were knowledgable of their craft, and the setting of the shop is a welcome respite from craziness that is Edgartown in July. read more

I am an islander and stumbled upon Btb when they first opened a couple years ago. As far as coffee goes this place is hands down the best coffee on island. It is like an oasis in a large dessert of mediocre coffee shops. The coffee they offer to buy is sourced from around the world and stuff you can't find anywhere else. The staff is warm and inviting and always remember what you drink. The head barista is very knowledgeable about his coffee and has a true passion for it. The food is also rave worthy and the outside dining is fantastic on those warm summer nights. I recommend this place to anyone and everyone who enjoys coffee and good food. read more

Came here for morning coffee & afternoon cocktails, have not yet tried the food. The non take-out hot coffees look incredible (fancy presentation), my to-go chai was meh. It was very bitter and I find it very odd they do not have a skim milk option for their coffees. Afternoon drinks were extremely delicious, best craft cocktails we found this weekend (we didn't go a ton of places) on the island. Service was very slow even though they weren't very busy. Overall ambiance outside is really nice. I would love to come back for brunch. read more

Updating my review because I came here for cocktails and snacks this summer and enjoyed it. The cocktails were well-done, creative, and carefully crafted. Food was also very tasty, especially the lobster mini-rolls. The setting is so pleasant, I just wish the tables were smaller so you can talk more easily to the person across. The service was also pretty slow, I think they (like many spots on the Vineyard) are understaffed. read more

I still love it here. This season I see a shift in a customer base that appreciates finer teas, coffee and espressos. Behind the bookstore has really up'd there game this year with amazing staff, baristas that care and table assistance better than in the past. The only thing that was noted so far this season is the summer tourists seem ruder and more impatient than ever ( for so early in the season) before. Loudly demanding and careless and needless comments abound. Give these employees a minute to cater to your needs, they're awesome. read more

They just reopened for the season with a brand new building in the back. The coffee and service is great! They serve intelligentsia drip coffee here. There is tons of space and it has a really relaxing courtyard with lots of seating. I also tried the gluten free carrot cake which was delicious! read more

There aren't many real quality places to go on Martha's Vineyard so really good is a pretty low bar. Let's call them really really good. Because they want to be the best. Behind the Bookstore ranks with any specialty coffee bar in Europe. Attention to detail. Liquor license and great food served with presentation detail. It can get very crowded, once again because there are no equivalents nearby. I like it very much. I try to go early when it's less crowded. They do an excellent job and when they do make an error they care. It is expensive but If that keeps them in business here, I am willing to pay. read more

I have been here many times, and the food and coffee is typically good, and the atmosphere eating in on the patio is usually lovely. However we had a negative recent experience in the takeout section which is why I am giving such a low review. We admittedly arrived very close to 3pm & by the time we reached the cashier, because of the line, it was a minute or two after 3pm and they refused to let us order a simple avocado toast for takeout. I frequent this place and the island is known for friendliness so I was taken aback that the cashier was so abrupt and even rolled her eyes at us. It's not how one encourages repeat business and cast a shadow on what had been a lovely day to that point. read more

A super cute place. Feels like a hidden gem. Every detail here is top-notch....the food, the displays, the drinks, the café, and of course....the outdoor space. The only down-side is that a certain person working behind the counter (on the only two occasions that we ate there, while on holiday in M.V.) expressly asked when we gave our credit card '...and would you like to add a tip to that'? Fabulous breakfast in a beautiful outdoor setting. All agreed the eggs were the fluffiest most flavorful ever! My Avocado Toast was delicious with a sprinkling of toasted pumpkin seeds and aleppo pepper. The sweet orange scone was moist and so delicious! Great place to start your day! read more

Amazing little hidden place! Great atmosphere, tasty food, friendly staff! What else do you need for perfect summer afternoon?

I went here last night with my family for a late night dinner after a movie. I love the atmosphere. It is tucked in behind the bookstore (duh) and has great, natural decor. The drinks were delicious. I got the Mow Crew, which was basically a moscow mule, and it was poured with a heavy hand, just the way I like it. I ordered a small plate for dinner (though it was up for debate amongst my family, part of us thought it was under large plates, and on my menu it was under small plates, so who knows), but the small plates were still plenty for a full meal. The salads are huge too! Since we were there so late a lot of people came just for dessert. They had a doggie water bowl out so I'm assuming you can bring your dog too. So even though I went there for dinner, I think it would be a great place to go at any time of day, and the food and drinks were great. read more

In one sentence, BTB does not know how to handle a customer with gluten free needs (note my daughter has celiac disease) and, what's worse, we caught two employees making fun of us. I would not recommend it to a friend and will not go here myself. We needed to order a GF salad for my daughter. BTB said they could make a non-GF salad they had on the menu, gluten free by substituting rice for farro. "Great" we thought. When the time came to order it, the employee who was taking the order did not know what to do with our modified request, and confusion ensued. When the salad arrived, we asked to double check that our order was actually GF and that the farro was removed. The waitress confirmed, but with a bit of attitude. Then, we noticed that there was only rice and an egg in the "salad". They had removed the avocado, lettuce and other veggies. Not sure why?! So, I went inside to ask them to add the veg back in. As I walked in, I overheard two employees making fun of us and our order. I was totally taken off guard by this, but confronted the employee about it, which she of course denied, by saying that she (and I quote) "was actually talking about another customer." Like that was supposed to make me feel better... I usually don't leave reviews, but felt compelled to share my story. read more

We were in Edgartown on Memorial Day, and stumbled into the "Behind the Bookstore Coffee." Great spot for intelligent hangout! Bakery goods, cookies, etc.. They make great sandwiches, too. The atmosphere with the tented area and the garden feel is inviting and the conversation and overall service from the staff is warm. Hate to give a bad review, but I really got ripped off here. Ordered one turkey sandwich and two iced coffees. With tax and tip (paid upon order) it was $28. After waiting 20 minutes, we were handed a puny turkey sandwich that had probably been sitting for 10 minutes. No chips, not even a slice of lettuce. Will not be back. read more

We go to Martha's Vineyard at the beginning of May every year. We love starting our mornings at this cafe with delicious coffees and breakfast treats. It's a lovely venue with a great staff. It's like sitting in a friend's backyard and close to the center of Edgarton and nearby hotels. read more

We came here last Wed. 9/1 looking for a decent breakfast. We saw the garden setting & thought might be a good place. The girl who tok our order barely spoke & didn't seem to want to answer any questions. We ordered 2 of the Chef Breakfast. It took almost 20 mins. to get our food and the server brought it over without utensils. We had to ask for the utensils so we can eat our food & it took him another 5 mins. to bring it to us. We could not understand the delay when there were 4 guys with apron on just standing around talking and not paying attention to customer. My husband took a bite of the scrambled egg and spit it out saying he ate something inedible. He said he doesn't know what it was. Took another bite & realized his egg has eggshells in it. I took a couple of bites of mine & had the same thing, eggshells. We were so disgusted but didn't send it back. We just wanted to get out of there. As we were leaving, the waiter come over to take the plates. We told him about the eggshells on the eggs & requested him to tell the owner so it doesn't happen again to anyone. This place does not even deserve one star...WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!! read more

I cant come up with a word to describe my experience for breakfast here. Tons of friendly people working. But none seemed to have the job of hosting or seating or taking orders. We had the breakfast sandwich and yogurt bowl. And a coffee and Pellegrino seltzer. I did not want a pellegrino seltzer but they did not have any juices so I settled. Also do not even think about asking for ketchup. They do not have that either and you will feel stupid asking. Also our meal that we served to ourselves and I ordered at a counter cost $35. Quite good. The food was fresh and the outdoor seating delightful the ribs were great as was the almond cake.

They seemed to have just opened for the season when we stumbled upon this place. It's in a pretty spot, the building was clean and the staff were very friendly. My husband had an ice coffee that was top notch. It was quite the process to watch the coffee being singled brewed and was nice and strong. With a name like "Behind the Bookstore" I was inclined to be a happy customer. I visited for breakfast. The problems were (1) extortionist pricing. You can eat cheaper and much better food with better service at any Ritz property. (2) cleanliness. There was an eggshell on my yogurt dish. A mixed bag. As others have said, beautiful location and dog-friendly, but extremely slow service and pretty unfriendly staff. Pour over coffee was very weak. French press was much better. Food is expensive, but good. Had muffin, lox on toast, other breakfast items. All fresh. Baked good were NOT too sweet and clearly made from scratch. So many places offer the same "freshly baked" muffins that taste like sweet glue. read more
