Arrived back to my beloved Martha's Vineyard island and after finding out our breakfast fave was closed, I realized we were about 100ft away from the restaurant my host's named Best Breakfast on the island. This is a cute causal setting. Upon arrival they informed of 10-20 minute wait if I opted for counter dining. I agreed and was pleasantly surprised with a table that opened up within 10 minutes. We ordered the peach pancake special, chicken and waffles, and the Cowboy Up frittata. Presentation of the food is A+ Yet... My husband took one of bite of his chicken and made a strange face. He said it tasted "off". By the time I received my frittata and pancakes and bit into them, nothing had any flavor. Pancakes taste like they flipped bland flour and eggs, frittata as though not one lick of seasoning hit the batch of eggs. I started surveying the person next me because I was truly surprised. She said she's been going there for 10 years and the food is usually good. She recommended I say something, so I asked our server if I could speak with manager. I explained why to her and she returned stating that they have discounted the food. Soon after the ?chef came over. Rapidly asked what's wrong with the food. As I tried to explain, she kept cutting me off with a rebuttal. She eventually walked away interrupting the conversation. She then walks back, not sure if conviction hit her. She apologized saying sorry if it felt like i wasnt listening. I said that's exactly what it felt it. I said I didn't understand why she would come ask me for feedback if you weren't going to listen. She said she had several orders to take care of, and, yet again, prematurely ended the conversation. I'm not sure what purpose she was trying to serve, but there's nothing like having a terrible dining experience to then top it off with disrespectful staff. read more

We waited what felt like forever for our food and then my food (potato pancakes) came out about 10 minutes earlier than my husband's egg sandwich. The egg sandwich though was not really a sandwich as my husband had hoped for it was an English muffin on a plate with runny eggs placed over the top. It wasn't something that was worth waiting for. Staff very accomodating, provides great service. Some of the seating is very cozy, makes you feel like you came with the people sitting next to you, but defiworth a visit for a great breakfast or brunch. We took a natural juice to sip on our walk home. I even ordered almond crusted French toast to go home with. Good thing I did, because the rain caused us to spend time indoors and take a long nap. This restaurant is a Vineyard institution but is always crazy busy during the summer. We came in early October for lunch, and got right in. What a charming place! So cute inside and loved the counter and kitchen visibility. The menu is varied and interesting. My husband had the "Cobb Salad" which was delicious, but I'm not sure why they call it a Cobb. Definitely different ingredients than a traditional one. We asked for extra dressing on the side, which it definitely needed. I had the fried chicken & waffles with hot honey (a special) and it was amazing!! It came with 3 large and 1 small piece of boneless chicken, and my only complaint is that 2 of the pieces were hot, and 2 were lukewarm. And they were out of iced tea. This was just ok, but nothing to phone home about. The restaurant had a 1hr 30 minute wait at 11:30 am on a Sunday. Which I'm sure is due to the limited options in the area and not necessarily the quality of the food. I ordered the special of the day which is possibly where I went wrong, salmon with white fish, eggs and spinach. The salmon did not taste wild caught and the dishe was too salty. I ordered bacon on the side and it was thin and bad. Not what I'd expect from a restaurant. The interior is small, but there is bar seating. All the staff were great and I might have had a better experience had I ordered something simple from the menu. I may try it again, but only if there is no wait. read more

I was visiting Martha's Vineyard for the first time and went to The Art Cliff Diner with my family. We were greeted right away and they tried to accommodate our large party of 8. Although there was a table big enough for us, it was partially seated so we were split across two tables. Although we didn't get to interact with our other table, it was still a great experience. Our particular server seemed pretty distracted and overwhelmed but was pleasant. This led to not getting refills on coffee or water. Other servers also jumped into help which was great. The food was outstanding. Everything was fresh, hot, and delicious. For food we had the Cuban Benedict (hands down the best I've ever had), granola and yogurt, the hash and eggs, and the breakfast tacos. As I said, everything was delicious. The food came out pretty quickly after ordering which was awesome. There is one single bathroom in the restaurant. There is limited parking but it's free. There is a step to get inside so not the most handicap accessible. It has the best vibe inside of a cute little diner. There is seating and bar seating. Visited the Vineyard in the dead of winter for a hockey tournament. This little restaurant popped up on yelp as a great place for breakfast. As soon as we walked in I was happy we took the walk. Adorable decor, smelled amazing and friendly staff. The food also did NOT disappoint! The hash and home fries were out of this world. Crispy edges and just the right amount of onion. I've been a devotee of the Art Cliff for decades...usually have gone with a crowd and we all enjoy tasting each others' dishes...lots of fun and gustatory delight...worth the wait...but the last few times...and today particularly...my old standby...the old faithful...has been clearly lacking...soft scrambled eggs, bacon, home fries and toast...my standard for a diner breakfast...the eggs tasted like they were poured out of a carton...no taste or consistency...home fries mushy...toast cold and chewy...no preserves offered...bacon OK...not nearly enough to save the meal...Gina - what the hell has happened? The menu is jam packed with every item imaginable for breakfast options you would want. I was feeling cozy and tried the pancakes which was really good. My sister and I had lunch here. Great place but I only gave 4 stars because my sister had an omelette which she chose Mozzarella cheese and the cheese was in one big blob. It wasn't melted like it should have been so she just took it out of the omelette altogether. She loved the potatoes! I had the Chicken Brie melt but got it over greens instead of on a roll. We ventured out to Vineyard Haven for breakfast on a Monday morning. One of the reasons we picked this place was their expansive menu and yes there were so many options we couldn't decide. Currently with the pandemic there is no dine-in so all seating is outdoors or you do take out. Our party ordered an omelet, the green eggs and ham sandwich, the cod cake, the old faithful, and the spicy pulled pork hash (which was mine). The portion was very generous and super filling. My hash was not spicy whatsoever but the flavor of the dish was great. It included eggs which I requested scrambled. The cod cake I thought was an interesting choice but I don't think I would want to eat something like that so early in the morning (that is just me personally) since it seemed more like a lunch item. In what world does that lump of cardboard constitute a steak. Potatoes were somehow burned and underdone. He asked for the steak medium rare and could barely cut through it with a steak knife. There are tourist traps, and then there's the Art Cliff Diner. I went in expecting something much, much different. I guess I judged the place by it's name (it's not a pretentious art-themed restaurant, but rather a diner started by owners named Art and Cliff). My partner and I went and were the last people to be seated on a Sunday before closing. We waited approximately five minutes (pro tip: it's busiest between 7 and 11, so if you're okay with a late breakfast, go after 12). We visited twice in two days, but not to eat both days. Humorously, after our order was taken, the power in the kitchen went out. Our server, Sam, was clearly disappointed for us, and insisted we call first thing on Monday and we would be seated immediately. Well, they kept their promise. The commitment to customer service is clearly their first priority, tied with a commitment to quality food. We were seated immediately, and our order was taken within minutes of sitting down. My partner and I shared a stack of Coconut Banana Pancakes and Rice Crispy Waffles. The waffle was excellently crisp (sort of a given, considering the name) with an excellent fresh honey taste. It was consistently crispy throughout, and not soggy in the center. The pancakes really shined. They leaned in on the coconut, pairing coconut flakes with a generous portion of banana. The banana kept the pancake moist, without being mushy, and the coconut added a nice differentiating texture in the pancake. All this paired with their house squeezed orange juice. You really can't beat the fresh stuff. What a treat. This is a tourist destination that doesn't just rely on clout to be successful. They very much care about their customers. The Art Cliff Diner is a place that we could see ourselves loving had we had a different experience there this morning. Parking is a nightmare, so don't even try. You order inside and the whole thing is completely unorganized. The guy had to go over to three different stations just to get our coffee and lemonade order done. It's packed there, inside and outside, but you can only eat outside and when it's BLAZING, there is little in the way of shade unless you are lucky enough to grab a bench by an umbrella. If you're going to have only outdoor seating, then why not make it more customer-friendly? Awning, more umbrellas, misters, fans, etc. One of us got their Cobb salad and the other got the spicy chicken hash with scrambled eggs. Re. the latter, it was not spicy in any capacity but it did taste very good and the eggs were nicely fluffy and buttery. The salad was kind of lame but ended up being alright; frustrating that it was missing a couple of the key ingredients in the description. We also got a sweet potato pecan scone since it sounded so unique and it came with cranberry sauce--loved it. Our daughter's coconut banana pancakes were really good as well, and the rest of our party seemed happy with their food. Listen, it's a cute place with a great vibe to it but if you're paying that much money, then throw your customers a bone with better seating. We also really hated the take-out only option since food is never as good when it's boxed up in a container. Maybe we'll come again in the off-season when it's back to normal dining.
