Oh my goodness, this little coffee shop is the best. The owner and only employee, Ernie, is the nicest man, which makes you want to support him so much more. When I first went in here a few years back, I had no idea, that this one retired man does everything for this coffee shop including being open until about 1am! Amazing for the vineyard, and I love late night coffee! My friends and I stopped in here one day, and met Ernie and he gave us samples of drinks and split up our drinks for us, which was very nice of him. He told us his story and I love supporting hardworking small businesses such as Ernie's coffee shop, and he is serving up a great cuppa joe, so that helps too! I enjoy the real fruit smoothies as well as the regular hot coffee and the iced coffee too. You can't go wrong here, he is legit and cares about everything and everyone he is serving. OPEN LATE!!! On Martha's Vineyard!!!! Who knew such a thing existed?? Mr. Pugg's Mugg offers good coffee, great conversation with the owner, Ernest (Ernie) Medeiros, lots of island gossip, and a casual atmosphere with even more casual hours (12 pm-ish to 12 am-ish...he's just not a morning person, but he'll talk your ear off all night!). This hidden-in-plain-sight coffee shop is delightful gem right in the middle of "downtown" Oak Bluffs, Martha's Vineyard. It's located towards the end of the street, near the Oyster Bar, across from Slice of Life. You could miss it, if not for the bright fluorescent "Espresso" sign in the front window! Somehow I have until now, even though it's apparently been here for 14 years!!! Ernie is friendly, interesting, and a personality that makes your coffee taste that much better! He is the heart and soul of this one-man operation: he's the only guy you'll ever see working here, from whenever he gets in around noon or so to midnight or so. He's not in as early on Saturdays, because he has another business venture he has to attend to that day. And he closes up shop "sometime in November", reopening ideally June 1st, but this year he says he didn't get back on the island until the beginning of July. Like I said, very casual. But then again, this is the island, not the mainland. Things run very differently here, much more slowly. The coffee is just coffee, and the stated prices on the chalkboard ain't cheap. But if he likes you (and he seems to like everyone!), the coffee might be 25 or 50 cents cheaper than posted. The best coffee offerings occur when you leave it up to Ernie to make it his way, which is delicious. It isn't calorie-free, but who cares, you're probably on vacation, right?! If he makes you an iced mocha, always delicious, if you don't watch out, he'll make it with some half-and-half. Don't argue, it's delish! And one of the best offerings on the menu is the "OB Blue", named after Oak Bluff's finest: hazelnut iced coffee, half-and-half, and topped off with whipped cream. Decadent. Dreamy. It's not a shtick. He created this beverage because this is what the local police liked when they came in. Mr. Pugg's Mugg also offers a plethora of other coffee beverages, smoothies, the "Puggacino" (which is really an icy cappuccino granita), and various baked goods to nosh on. There's free internet achievable if you sit in his shop, and 4 tables with accompanying chairs if you just want to sit with friends and talk. Ernie will chat you up if you let him...and by all means, let him! He's really fun to chat with. And, if you encourage him, he'll even sing for you...the one song he says he knows all the words to, a crooner's favorite: "I Left My Heart In San Francisco". And croon he does, in tune, with vibrato, the whole nine yards, beautiful! If you're up late and need a coffee fix with a conversation, Mr. Pugg's Mugg is THE place to go on Martha's Vineyard!!!! Mr. Pugg. Nice guy. But what's the story with opening at 3 in the afternoon ?? I want my coffee in the morning not at 11 at night. Mr Pugg used to be a basketball player and the games must have been at night because he's never opened in the morning. Not sure how he makes his money, must be on his house rental. A review however of the coffee and conversation alone would be 5 stars. Mr. Pugg should bring back the OB Blue. Don't know why he had a change of heart with this drink. It's like a breath of fresh air on a hot and sticky day on Citcuit Avenue. You have to look for the place but it's worth looking for. read more

Cash only! The owner is very social and made you feel like he's known you forever! It was a great coffee experience.

Listen people. Nobody cares if he loses your business. He opens at about 3pm and closes at about 1am. He's the working-mans coffee shop. You can sit and chat for hours with him, I go every day. It's nice to get off at 11pm and be able to go get a warm cup of coffee. This place isn't closed. This man isn't me. He's just an old guy, living out his retirement with his own business, running it how he wants. If you want to complain about him not being open at 9am, go elsewhere. But don't complain when it's 9pm and you're craving a decaf iced coffee and nobody else but him is open. He's friendly, he uses fresh fruit for his smoothies, and he's been here for 21 years. Cut him some god damned slack. He doesn't have anybody working with him, he works by himself and all he wants is to have a good time. This coffee shop isn't for uptight people. It's for people who are relaxed and want to sit and have a good laugh and a warm cup of fresh brewed coffee. I suggest the puggachino. It's his signature drink and it's delicious. read more

Went twice so far. Espresso ground and brewed to order and was really good. The gentleman who served us was happy and polite. (Maybe the owner? Looked like the logo :) ) Price was a bit higher than a Starbucks but was well worth it and expected for MV. I recommend and would definitely go back. read more

This place was awful. The man working (the owner) was an ignorant mean person with no regard for his customers. I paid $5 for a iced colada that was pure sugar. I took one sip and immediately told the owner that I did not like it and asked for something else. He told me he still had to charge me, even though I was completely unsatisfied.
