Belk is an old school department store in the South. My first-ever memory of department store shopping is actually from the old Belk in Chattanooga, some 30 years ago. The story there has long been part of family lore - let's just say it portended my future life as a devoted shopper. The Belk at Hamilton Place is great. I'm always a little skeptical of older stores like Belk, Dillard's and such, given that Atlanta (and even larger cities, of course) boasts Bloomingdale's, Saks, etc. But I was pleasantly surprised at most every department at this store. While many of the sections are smaller than I am used to at stores I frequent in other cities, like the solid selections in purses, say, of Kate Spade to Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren to designer's secondary brands like Cynthia by Cynthia Rowley. That last one proved to particularly good for me as I found an awesome Cynthia purse, about 30% off - a fabulous spring-y orange shade (the navy lining goes perfectly with it). So many compliments every time I wear it! The ladies lingerie department is also stock full of the good brands, especially Wacoal which is my go-to. The shoe department is solid enough - a nice selection of "cute" athletic shoes in fun colors (the good for just wearing out, not so much working out, but fun) - and a side selection of good athletic and every day socks and tights. Belk served my specific needs on my first visit and is a go-to store I think I will be able to count on for future needs!

I have never been so disappointed with a department store...looks more like a storm came through the men's department. I will post pictures in hopes that management will be embarrassed enough to do something about this!

TJ Maxx and Marshall's vie for my preference depending on the city and specific store…read more In Chattanooga, there is a TJ's and a Marshall's by Hamilton Place. The TJ's is not nearly as good as some I've been to, namely the one in Mt. Pleasant SC on 17 and the one in Brookhaven in Atlanta, so Marshall's wins this round. Needing work shoes - all black, non slip and this time preferably some kind of athletic shoe not the ugly restaurant shoes ubiquitously worn and hated by bartenders and servers everywhere - and voila, done. Black NB with just a little touch of silver threaded through the laces. Good price at under $50. We also perused the other sections and while there were a lot of cute home décor items, we were disciplined and did not stray into that territory. We did find some cute pj's for me, two sets of tank/short duos, one Tahari and one Free People, both under $17. Mom insisted on getting them for me as a spring-into-summer sleeping treat. Good spot for a lot of your bargain shopping needs.
