Appointment can be at 2pm and you're not going to back until like 15-20 minutes later with long wait times in the chair afterwards. If they can improve their time management, this would be a 5 star experience. Come here with plenty of patience, or else it can be frustrating for some people. Great service otherwise!

Alright, so... This…read morereview is based on the billing, nothing more or less. As I reviewed below, the customer service, the cleanliness, and the staff are all wonderful. The care they put into their patients seems genuine, just as the type of care; or maybe that's where it gets questionable. With what I'm here to share, it may sound as if, I'm contradicting myself. Now, billing. I'll say this, now. I'm very grateful I understand medical billing, even with this being dental; some things follow suit. On: 10-28-2023 - They took over my treatment (my braces were already on, I moved and needed to find a new Orthodontist) X-rays were taken at the same time. Nothing needed to be corrected or changed, I picked up from where I left off. Meaning, that being charged for services as if I was starting as a brand-new patient, wasn't necessary. 06-2024: My braces came off - I had a full cleaning. At that time, they wanted to do another complete set of X-rays. I mentioned, that I had them done in October of 23, and the insurance will not cover another set within the same year. They said that would not be a problem and if so, they'll take care of it at that time. I will have to deal with that on my own, I should have asked for that in writing and I didn't. Needless to say, the insurance did not cover those sets of X-rays. I was also, looking at what was submitted to the insurance and what was billable/paid. From the dates above 10/28/23 - 06/20/24: They billed my insurance a total of $9,094. $76 - Oral Hygiene Instructions: This is something I was billed for, but I'm a grown adult, I know how to take care of my teeth and should not have been billed for this. My insurance did not cover this and I will not, either. $22 - Flouride: This is something I get once a year and will pay for out of pocket, but this is something I was not told would not be covered by the insurance. However, I already knew this. I am faithful to getting my teeth cleaned every six months, with my prior dentist, I've never had this issue. I always knew what my costs were before my cleaning and my costs were only for my, fluoride. If you choose to visit this office, I'd suggest you get the procedure codes for what will be done, YOU, call your dental provider and get the coverage information for those codes. When it comes to Orthodontics, I would suggest you look elsewhere. Again, their staff is wonderful, and the customer service is excellent; but when my money is being mishandled, that cancels out everything else.

Then, God forbid your child loses a wire, bracket or Herpes, they will not get you in and your kid has to wait for weeks. This has happened to us more than 5 times! This is incredibly poor time management and preparation. Bonus points though as the dentist and assistants themselves were absolutely lovely and made the experience fun and friendly, I still wouldn't mind coming back just for that. There was no greeting when I arrived...just handed me a clip board after I gv my name. I arrived an hr early as I had to update my info. I've been going to the Bedford location 7+ yrs; seems the front staff changes often bc I didnt recognize any of them since my last visit abt 6 mos prior. I've never had any issues until yesterday. The manager did not follow HIPPA guidelines by discussing (LOUDLY) my concerns/questions as I was standing in the lobby w other patients. I told her she had a hostile demeanor which I feel was bc I was inquiring abt a screening that I thought I could decline. I've declined other svcs in the past and nothing was ever said so I thought it was ok, especially since Medicare said it was optional. When I told Rachael what Medicare said, she said Medicare CANNOT dictate treatment plans or tell them how to run their office & said I was free to leave if I wanted to. She kept interrupting me when I was trying to clarify my question. I never raised my voice as I felt this was a personal matter & I already felt humiliated that other patients were listening & staring at us. I eventually told her I did not want to discuss my personal business in front of others. She then took me about 3 feet away where patients could still see AND hear us. Regardless of how low I spoke, she continued to speak in a loud hostile tone. When I told her she was being hostile she said 'not at all' and continued her same loud tone. She would not let me get my full questions out before interrupting me. After the back & forth, she FINALLY said this particular cancer screening is required by all regardless of what insurance one has. She THEN said the patient pays for it once annually although the procedure is performed twice annually. I'm not sure why she didn't explain that from the beginning! I believe the screening was about $35 in which she said I owed. She added that I had denied the screening on my last visit and couldn't deny it again. Nobody EVER told me about a mandate on my next visit so I was confused. I thought it was an optional svc. One of her staff members finally printed my records & showed the manager where I had already paid AND had a $55 credit. Instead of apologizing, she simply said the office printed my docs prior to my arrival and just walked off. She mumbled something like 'all of this for nothing'. I would think a manager would check such things AND abide by HIPPA before trying to humiliate someone simply bc they want clarification. AND why did I have to tell her I didnt want to discuss my personal issues in front of patients? Monarch still owes me $43, per my credit. I did tell the hygienist & the dentist that the manager had humiliated me, etc. I am trying to see what my next steps are bc I do not want to interact w Rachael again. I just want them to return my credit ($43) as I search for another dentist.

This led to significant inconvenience and concern about the quality of care. To make matters worse the problem, a dental bridge that Monarch put in broke within a year of the procedure. A bridge should last for several years, so its premature failure is a serious matter and very careless. Following the failure of the bridge, I went into the office to have Monarch look at it. I felt rushed and was told they would call me back, but they never did. Since then, I have made multiple attempts to contact the office, but my calls have not been returned. They screwed up and not willing to resolve the issue that was caused by carelessness and incompetent I am very disappointed with both the clinical work and the customer service I received. Please be aware that Monarch is not a good place to get dental work.

So much so that my husband and I decided it was time to end my treatment prematurely. We decided to eat the cost to find peace and better care at another practice. He wanted me to leave sooner but I stubbornly thought I could endure. After all, we paid up front! It wasn't until my last appointment that I realized how ill-prepared and incompetent I'd been in my choice of ortho care and how these insidious problems accumulated leading to my choice to leave. To start, she's only available on Friday's through my dentist office (Vanilla Family Dentristy) making scheduling a pain. If you've an emergent need you're unable to see her expeditiously. Some people may not care that her personal staff seems to change regularly but I like knowing who is working on my mouth. The only faces I ever recognized were 3 people who worked for my dentist office and at times in tandem with Dr. Chen. Dr. Chen presents herself as a soft-spoken and kindly, older orthodontist. I can tell you that after roughly a year and a half of treatment (not included are the 6 months of Covid appt cancellations) that I've come to understand her brand of cold doctoring fairly well. There was no shortage of subtle and overt condescension when it came to something you did wrong. I broke brackets a total of 3 times and each time I'd hear about how to chew slower and the things to avoid as if bracket fixing weren't par for the course for braces. I am acutely aware of what I cannot eat and how but bracket breaks happen. Would it not have been simpler to dispense with the patient-shaming and get on with the appointment(s)? She suggested that I get a tongue trainer. An unforeseen expense on top of fully paid for braces, not in the original plan, but I paid for it and took her at her word. But tell me why she forgot to tell her staff to install the spacers needed at the previous appt to make putting in the tongue trainer easier? She openly admits to this and tries to put the blame on her staff but lack of oversight is not on them but on her. It was uncomfortable to bite on the trainer to get it to fit but so is prolonging having these braces. That's only slightly alarming when you compare it to how she suggested we remove two teeth to get my front teeth to move back quicker. So another added expense not originally outlined in the treatment plan? When I brought the possible extractions up (she said she'd talk to the dentist to see if he could do it) at my next appt she didn't know what I was initially talking about. This was full on alarming. I shouldn't have to remind anyone of a possibility of losing two teeth but especially not to the person who suggested it. My God man. Luckily, I hadn't gone through with it. I also remember having to talk her down on 2 occasions now. You know when you hear the hysteria in a child's voice start to crescendo and you better deal with it fast? That. On one such occasion at my last appt I told Dr. Chen that I hadn't worn elastics in a month. She starts to get on my case and her voice starts to rise. Telling me the onus was on me to ask for them and why hadn't I done that? I told her I couldn't because 2 brackets were broken while I was out of town and how I'd missed my last appt. All of a sudden she understands and her tone lowers. Why should I have to explain myself like this to bring down her temper? Is a professional, honorable environment too much to ask for? At the same appointment I was going to tell her how unacceptable it was to wait a month for a bracket to be fixed. There is no easy way to tell someone their treatment isn't working for you and I don't know how to be that person. I was going to tell her that I wanted to see what my options were and possibly end treatment sooner but my husband beat me to the punch. For this, I am sorry. You didn't feel how cold the room got when she heard I wanted to end treatment. He called the office to ask for my patient paperwork while I was there (because he knew I'd forget or want to avoid conflict due to me having PTSD) and that set her off because I hadn't gotten to that part with her yet. "You are an adult? Yes? You can speak for yourself and make decisions. He is not your guardian." Then proceeds to walk off. Correct. He isn't my guardian but he is my protective husband whom I've given permission on all my medical forms and have relayed the goings on of my treatment to. She may think it's inappropriate for a husband to care for his wife but it's not. Did she have to threaten to call 911 on him when he just asked to speak to her in person? No, she didn't. Just another sign that she lacks the adequate hallmark skills we've come to know of adept doctors: communication, empathy, professionalism.
