the staff here was very rude and had no sense of customer service. they stalk their guests like a hawk, and talk about the guests amongst each other on their walkie talkies (in spanish). they thought i wouldn't notice, because it wasn't in english.. but i speak spanish too. i only stay at this hotel when there's no other option and all other hotels are fully booked. i've stayed at every hotel on avalon, and the bellanca is honestly my last choice. i've stayed here a couple times, and the rooms have no privacy- the walls are paper thin. the rooms are way too small for the price, you barely have any room to move around. you're better off staying at hotel atwater or the catalina island inn (both have AMAZING friendly customer service!). i also used the side door to exit onto the street, as i wasn't aware you can't use that door (there's no signs).. and the cleaning lady immediately went chasing after me, gave me a dirty look, and locked the gate behind me, even though i had already locked it for them. needless to say, i won't be staying here ever again :) read more

Paper thin walls, extremely noisy. Staff not accommodating. Tried to request late checkout (12pm) due to scuba excursion, was told to request at time off arrival. Requested at time of arrival was told to request day of checkout in the morning. Called at 6am to request checkout for 12pm was told they can only do 11am, asked if I can leave my luggage to not drag around the island was told they didn't have storage. I asked again if they be able to please extend late checkout from 11am to 12pm as the scuba excursion was at 10am they said not. We were a party of 4 my husband, two friends and myself. Our vacation started out a bit stressful due to a minor emergency for our friends who couldn't make it on the first day. The reservation was under their name which could have caused us a problem however Max at Bellanca Hotel was AWESOME! He was very kind, professional and helpful! Our stay there was so wonderful we were planning our next visit before we left! Location. Location. Location. The Bellanca Hotel is located at the end of the main drag (Crescent Ave.) in Catalina, about a 10 minute walk from the Catalina Express dock. Since it's at the end of the Crescent Ave., it's a little more private than some other hotels on Crescent, yet it's super close to all the action. The hotel staff was always friendly and helpful. The room was clean and spacious, and the fireplace gave it nice a ambiance. Pro tips: Be sure to grab a drink from The Naughty Fox (the hotel bar downstairs) and head up to the rooftop deck for some people watching and ocean views below. Each time we went to the deck, it was uncrowded and peaceful. If you are planning to grab a drink from downstairs (and it happens to be the off-season- aka late fall/winter), I'd recommend going sooner rather than later. The bar closes at 6 most days of the week, but will close early when it's not busy. We showed up a little after 4 PM and they already closed up shop for the day. Looking forward to staying here next time we're in Catalina! read more

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. The room had a very musty smell and caused me to experience lung and sinus issues, with everything feeling wet to touch. We ultimately chose to leave a day early because we were concerned re: mold and the dampness. The hotel refused to give us a refund for the night. The floor in room 210 has some weird lumpy issue to the left of the bed that was disconcerting and a bathroom door that is broken. Beyond that, the rooms are dark, cramped and dirty. I made the mistake of looking too closely around and was grossed out by the hairs, dirt, and general scruffiness of the place. The fact that no one is wearing masks nor concerned about COVID but continue to not clean the rooms is a huge red flag. Management clearly is trying to save on labor and costs at the expense of guests by not reinstating room cleaning, and it's unacceptable. But on the whole the staff is giving ambivalent and disassociated. The two upsides were a great meal at the naughty fox and comfortable beds. Nonetheless, I would not stay here unless you are okay with a motel experience for a luxury price tag. read more

We stayed here for my birthday trip and I'm happy to say we made the right choice! Front desk staff were all very welcoming & friendly. We were checked into our room right away. Room was VERY clean- no complaints whatsoever. I read before hand that they do not have full body mirrors, a closet or iron. We ironed all our clothes at home so that wasn't an issue for us. (: they have a small drawer for your clothes and a couple hangers were available. Bikes are available for guest to use, just sign a waiver. You can leave your bag at the hotel & they'll take it to the dock for you on the day you check out. Restaurants, the beach, grocery store were all within walking distance. 10/10 would stay here again next time! Also, thank you for the birthday macaroons!! BTW beautiful view on the rooftop. The Bellanca has a wonderful location but for me it all ended there. My recent stay was probaly the worst hotel experience I have ever had. To start we arrived at 2:00 pm and were told that our room was not yet ready. OK, check in time was 3:00. We were told we would receive a text when ready. We returned at 4:00 and were told that they tried calling but never tried to text. Our room was the worst one in the whole hotel as it turned out. It was right next to the housekeeping room. The room was tiny without bathtub. I would not have stayed except we were there for only one night. At 1:30 AM we were rudely awakened by noisy guests in the room above forcing me to call the front desk. Once asleep we awakened to the clamor and laughter of the cleaning crew beginning their chores at around 8:00 AM. The paper-thin walls didn't shield us from the noisy early morning partiers or the maid service jabber. All this for 700 bucks!!! read more

Covid Review (yellow tier) I walked by this hotel when I stayed on the island in September 2020. They were still undergoing a remodel so I bookmarked them on Yelp to check back into the reviews and pictures before I booked my next stay on the island. The remodeled rooms looked great on Yelp and the reviews told me that I would want an upgraded room and not the standard Courtyard or Garden view room since I'm bougie and want a balcony/patio. There weren't a lot of photos of the upgraded rooms on Yelp so I took a bunch of ours so you can see everything. I haven't vacationed much since Covid so I wanted to make sure this was trip was extra nice. We booked the Cabana King Deluxe Room and were thrilled with this room. The room was super spacious and fully upgraded. We had a balcony facing the street which we loved and drank coffee on every morning. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and the bathroom was great with new upgraded everything. We had a mini fridge in our room which came in handy for our wines and coffee creamers we bought. There was a Keurig coffee machine in our room with regular and decaf coffees and some sugars, substitutes, dry creamers, etc. The only unusual part about our room was the closet area was next to the bathroom and not enclosed meaning it was open. The bathroom mirror had a light inside of it which we loved. The shower area had a nice bench towards the back and a small window to see into the room or out the sliding glass doors to the balcony/street. Due to Covid (yellow tier) they are not having maid service, but you just call the front desk and tell them what you need and they run it over to you. The front desk people were always very pleasant and helpful no matter what time of day or night. The rooftop deck was really nice and we had our own happy hour up there one day at one of the tables. You can bring your own food and drink up there or order something from the Naughty Fox. I was hoping to have brunch up on the rooftop in the morning, but the Naughty Fox doesn't open until 11am and has no brunch items on their menu. The hotel has a bunch of beach cruisers that they let their guests use. On our last day we checked out two plus a lock from the front desk and rode to the other side of Avalon for breakfast. Afterwards, we rode around towards the Casino and around town. It was lovely to have these to use. I have stayed at a few different hotels on the island and this one by far is the nicest. I would definitely stay here again in Room 109. read more

Catalina is an amazing place, but this hotel was truly disappointing. As others have mentioned, the facade looks nice and there are some nice amenities (beach towel, bike, beach chair), but that's where the good parts ended for us. TLDR: Room 107 is terrible. If you get this room, ask for a change immediately or your money back. Also, if you have any issues that they can't fix, expect to only receive an apology and no other accommodations or 'make-good' gestures, unless you're ready to get into a debate or argument. My review below is based off of our stay in room 107 (courtyard king) and the lack of customer service we received. Regarding room 107, it should not be designated as a 'COURTYARD King' and charged the same rate as the others. I'm sure other suites and rooms are nicer, but we definitely felt misled here. The reasons are: 1) It's located in the back corner, thru an extra hallway, so there's no view nor does it directly access the courtyard. I included a picture of what's directly in front of your door. 2) The headboard is positioned on a wall backed against a street. What makes this worse, the little window above your headboard is level w/ the street, due to the incline of the road. This means all road noise, from footsteps to cars, travel directly into the unit. 3) Wifi signal in this room is extremely weak to non-existent. Again, because of the room's positioning. There is excellent signal everywhere else in the facility, except this room. Because of these issues, we asked the front desk to see if we could get a room change. Jessica was awesome and extremely understanding of our concerns. Unfortunately, there wasn't another 'courtyard king' available, so they offered to put us into an upgraded room for additional fees, which we declined. TBH, having already spent close to $700, we saw little worth in going over $800 for a two-night stay at a hotel that would be 1-2 stars anywhere else. At this point, if we had the option to get a full refund, we would have been okay paying more at a nicer place. My wife and I decided to chalk this up to bad luck, but we asked them to look into the wifi issue. We were told they would call people and get this fixed. The next day, we approached the front desk to inquire about the wifi status, and that's where the fun begins. In her attempt to help, the manager failed at all facets of customer service. Instead of sensing the irritation of a customer and quickly shutting the conversation down w/ an easy 'make-good' gesture, she proceeded to: 1) Debate us on that fact that since the hotel did not charge a resort fee, we weren't being charged for the wifi. She knows this because she's a 'world traveler', whatever that means. I'm sorry, but if you're trying to run a successful business, which I assume Portofino is, EVERYTHING is baked into the price of a guest's stay, even if it's not itemized. All those 'free' napkins and condiments you take at the restaurants, someone is paying for those! 2) Patronize us with an explanation of how wifi works and is hooked up on the island, but not realizing that it's 2019 and we literally didn't encounter wifi issues anywhere else we went on the island, only in this room. No one is expecting gigabit connections here, just a usable connection. We even offered to have them come to the room to check on it, for which we received no response. 3) After more useless back and forth, she sort of infers we brought this up so we can directly get a refund/discount, which obviously made the situation worse. We obviously got nowhere, so my wife and I leave and head back to the room. After a minute, we get a call from this manager offering to give us a discount, a bottle of wine, or something to make us 'happy' w/ our stay. At this point, we declined and wanted to just move on. After all this unnecessary drama for such a trivial thing, the hotel is now ready to provide remedy? You couldn't just offer this early on when things were still pleasant? No thank you. UPDATE: Found other reviews that mention issues w/ room 107. Mgmt obviously knows about these issues, but chooses not to be upfront w/ the guests nor price these rooms differently. read more

Small boutique hotel in Avalon. Found this via the Catalina Express website and it was the only hotel that I could find that would let you stay one night. The front desk staff was very friendly and I got a 10 percent discount for my Birthday. The room were clean and really nice. The beds and pillows were sooo comfortable and heavenly. Perfectly soft and not too big just the way I like. I had a good night sleep here. The bathroom was a little small and due to the draught the bathtub could not be used but the shower and water pressure was good. They also offer a complimentary breakfast in the morning it's a continental breakfast with muffins, pastries and fruit nothing special and I didn't really eat much. I had no issues staying here, the place was beautiful. They had a nice outdoor patio seating and you can also go up on the roof and hang out. They even provided me complimentary apple cider for my Birthday since i don't drink they either give you wine/champagne. All in all we had a great stay, I loved the room and bed! read more

There are 2 rooms overlooking the water. The rest are buried inside. The setup is the same as a motel, with all doors exiting to the outside. Most of the interior room doors are sliding glass patio doors. There was no housekeeping due to COVID, according to the front desk. They were very responsive when we asked for anything. The roof deck is a great place to sit and eat. Our room was right underneath the deck, and you can hear everything that happens up there. Fortunately, it closes at 10 p.m. read more

If you are inside the room, this hotel is a two star experience maybe, if you are outside I give it three. For the price the rooms leave a lot to be desired, and some really nasty stained furniture. Had a hard time thinking about what to give this place. The exterior of the hotel is charming. I love the use of the bikes and the beach chairs. The staff is pleasant and it's right on the main strip of Avalon. Idyllic location, walking distance from everything you need. Inside the room is another story. It's not just the tiny cramped size that was uncomfortable, it was all of the beat up furniture and the horrible bed. There is this weird down mattress topper you sink into so you're sleeping in a crevasse; I slept terrible every night. Also, the only places to sit had gross stained upholstery. For the price of this room they have GOT to upgrade the furniture. I wish I would have take pictures of the seat for the vanity, it was greasy stained and ripped. Scary. The room was challenging to navigate for two people and this place needs to be renovated to justify the price tag. Had we not been able to use credit card points I would have been really upset. Honestly, I can't recommend this place. Sorry I just don't think I'll be back. read more

Not to sure as to parking since we were shuttled in from port. But there were plenty of gold carts parked right outside.. When we arrived we were promptly greeted by 2 employees, who I regret not getting there names because they were very information and courteous. We were checked in to our room within minutes. Rooms were clean very chic and cozy. Decor was just perfect A.C. worked (which is a plus) we were settled inn in no time. They habe bikes and beach chairs at your disposal upon request. The hotel is centrally & conveniently located near shops, restaurants, bars & stores. They will store your luggage until your room is ready or check in time. They don't have an elevator but will assist with your luggage. We stayed in the Portofino Suite. The views of the harbor, Casino & surroundings are really amazing. The sunken tub is super comfortable. There is a separate walk in shower too. They do need new towels & bath mats - dingy white isn't a good look. Housekeeping did a nice job though & the room was clean. The bed is comfortable & the bedding soft & clean. They provide plenty of pillows in order to accommodate different firmness preferences. BUT - This is an extremely noisy room! It is located above the street & right below the sun deck. So if you are a light sleeper, this may not be the best room for you. The continental breakfast is served in the tiny lobby. I compared it to other continental breakfasts & this one was disappointing. The pastries didn't taste fresh & the coffee was weak. The strawberries looked expired but the rest of the fruit was fresh & good. Breakfast is a difficult meal, but more variety would have been appreciated - especially choices with less refined sugar & carbohydrates. I suggest new/better double pane windows, some signage on sun deck to keep the noise down as a courtesy to other guests, new bath towels & mats and some creativity in the morning. Even though the rooms are tiny at this hotel, the friendly staff and fun bikes and proximity to the bay more than made up for the tiny, dark rooms. If you do Catalina right, you shouldn't spend much time in the room, anyway! I highly recommend the Italian restaurant next door, too. Once in your room, the room looks cute. Outside looks cute, the lobby is cute. The service is good. But walking TO your room is like your in a dirty motel. Honestly, the halls are dirty. Just gross. The room was very muggy, no ventilation. We had to turn on the AIR on blast to breathe. The rooftop isn't clean either. It was ok. Would I stay here again? NO. Stay at the Pavilion, a lot nicer. Do not stay here!!! This hotel was beyond disappointing and gross. To start off the hotel looks nothing like the photos everything feels, looks and is dirty. The photos of the room I saw before booking made me want to splurge and spend the $400 for one night... Immediately after walking and seeing the hotel I knew I was in for it and as soon as going into the room immediately tried to cancel my stay and go to absolutely any other hotel in the area but I was told it was non refundable so I ate the cost and still booked another hotel anyways because I couldn't imagine staying at this hotel. The bedding was dirty with what looked like a a suspicious human liquid splatter on it, the room smelt musty and had a gross stench, there was trash on the floor in the bathroom and so many other things. This was an absolutely amazing stay! The room, the location, the views, the amenities... I can't recommend it enough. It was a little pricier than we wanted to spend, but it was totes worth it! We wanted the full experience and going with the Luxury Ocean View Suit was more than rewarding. I usually like to see customer photos compared to the business photos, but this room was exactly as expected. We would've stayed longer than two nights. We were pretty much in the heart of everything. Didn't mind the walk from the dock to our hotel or back to the golf cart rentals. We didn't get to rent a golf cart, but took advantage of the hotel's bikes which are free to guests and 4 hours max. They are only one speed so I don't recommend trying to go up a hill, but great for cruising around. They also have beach chairs that are free to guests and although we didn't get to take advantage of those either, they were lightweight enough to carry to any beach. There is also a great rooftop lounge area overlooking the town and ocean, just breathtaking. I'd come back here in a heartbeat. Thank you to the staff for a great experience. read more

Great view. Nice staff. Old small moldy tiny rooms with old decor. They have a sun deck with a lovely view. They served a continental breakfast. There is no indoor area so if it's cold or raining you are stuck in your room. They are currently going through renovations, I'm hoping they make improvements. This is not a cheap place to stay. We paid over $500.00 for two nights to stay in a tiny moldy room. The room would be comparable to a motel 6. We were so very disappointed. We checked out after one night. They did not charge us a cancellation fee for the second night. They did have free bicycles for use. read more

We were put in room 408 which was supposed to be a courtyard view room. This room was crammed next to the cleaning facilities and looked at (and smelled like) piles of dirty sheets. There was absolutely no view of the courtyard. The decor was not as advertised either. The centerpiece of the room was a college fridge with a large microwave stacked on top and there was a pile of dirty toilet paper (poop and hair) left behind the toilet. To add insult to injury, the outlets (and therefore the lights, clock and charging station) on the left side of the bed did not work. It took us three attempts to find a working outlet for my husband's phone. Rather than offer me a discount, I was offered a $10 bottle of champagne (I don't drink, so thanks?) and to pay more for a better room the next day. I refused to pay more, when I never got the room that was advertised to me in the first place. Finally they agreed to move me to an actual courtyard room the next day. No discount on my $450 a night stay or recognition that room 408 was not as advertised was ever given. The rest of the stay was fine, but overall it felt overpriced. They are just lucky that options are limited on the small island and their location is fantastic. read more

Ants all over our room! Upon arrival our room had a very terrible smell and we noticed ants everywhere! We called the front desk and they sent over a maintenance man with bug spray. Really? We went downstairs and asked to be put in another room and they accommodated. I'm giving two stars because they handled the inconvenience very gracefully however I do not think the quality of the rooms matches what you're paying for. The rooms are just okay .
