It's been years since I last went to Hilo, I wanna say it's been like 5 years or so since I last…read morevisited Hilo town. Whenever I'm in Hilo, I would come to this little strip mall called - "Hilo Shopping Center", just for two reasons - 1. Lanky's Pastries..........this is my all time favorite local bakery in Hilo. As I always would come here for their Cream Buns, Glazed Donuts, & Monkey Bread. 2. First Hawaiian Bank (Hilo Branch), as this is my customer...........it's just like I get paid to visit my friends, and while I'm at the bank, it just so happen for me that I have to fix something for them (while I'm visiting). :D Aside from these two businesses, I've seen a lot of business come & go from this little strip mall. On my recent visit this past Friday, I was pretty shocked at how empty the mall looked like when I took a quick stroll inside of the mall. Established back in 1961, the Hilo Shopping Center was the 1st shopping center on the Big Island, and from looking at the strip mall directory, they currently have the following businesses listed here - 1. First Hawaiian Bank (Hilo Branch) 2. Lanky's Pastries - I went here on Friday (12-4-2020), and they were closed. I hope they didn't close down permanently??? 3. Island Naturals Market & Deli 4. Kamana Kitchen 5. LV Tech 6. Optical Dispensers 7. CVS Longs Pharmacy 8. ACR Dollar 9. Restaurant Miwa 10. Sole Comfort 11. The Orient Connection 12. Diva's Boutique 13. Liberty Tax 14. Edward Jones 15. Bayada Home Health Care 16. Keiki Dental Specialists 17. National Fire Protection 18. Hilo Air Conditioning & Repair 19. Yoga Center 20. Native Nations Education Foundation 21. AlohaCare 22. Diet Center 23. Hilo Family Dental Center 24. Hawaii First Community Resource Center 25. Hawaii First Federal Credit Union 26. Sunlight Cafe 27. Hawaiian Brain Freeze 28. Jin Ju Hair Salon 29. Institute of Acupuncture 30. Happy Valley Seafood Restaurant I'm not sure if all these businesses are still in business, as the mall sure looked pretty empty. Of course we are in the middle of a pandemic, so I'm not sure if a few businesses had to closed down for now, until safer times. I am hoping my beloved Lankys Pastries will reopen one day.........I kid you not gang, I actually stopped by Lankys (2) times on Friday!!! I first came by Lankys Pastries around 6:45 AM, but when I saw it was closed, I was thinking maybe I had come here too early in the morning, and that they had not opened up yet. Then later that afternoon, around 1:00 PM I swing by Lankys again after leaving K's Drive In, thinking I'd stop by for my Cream Bun fix. This time after parking & getting out of my rental car & walking up to the bakery...........the bakery was closed, but the bakery items/shelves were still in there. Please pray with my that Lankys is just closed for a short time, and not permanently........Aiyah! (Sad Panda Face!)..............

She has a dressing room, and her items are consigned by locals in the area. She told me that some decorated hangers I got are handmade by a man whose wife had passed away, and she saved them because they were handcrafted! So she has a wonderful eye, and a lot of care :) the prices are very fair, and you'll be supporting a local small business in its second generation :) definitely worth a visit!

Best vintage aloha shirt selection in Hilo…read more I didn't expect much from the casual storefront with emphasis on kids and women's clothes, but to my pleasant surprise I discovered the most carefully curated selection of designer vintage aloha shirts on the street. I went into all the vintage shops on that block, and Stella's place had the most prime assortment of men's Manuheali'i, Reyn Spooner, Tori Richard, and Sig Zane aloha shirts. Shirts were fairly priced according to rarity. I found 6 I wanted but rationed myself to 3: a long sleeved Manuheali'i, a short sleeved Manuheali'i in Christmas red, and a Reyn Spooner. Woman owner said Stella is no longer with us, but she is Stella's daughter. I appreciated that she was willing to give an opinion on each shirt as I tried them on. Pricing may be negotiable on multiple purchases? I just paid the marked price on my 3 selections since it seemed reasonable. Only one small changing stall so you have to wait your turn; a second changing room would be a nice improvement.

I'm originally from O'ahu and was excited to see Alohiwais sign when my sister and I were walking…read moredown the row of stores. We decided to go in to check it out since their sign still said open. Mind you, I always go to Ho'omau Market and always buy stuff from their booth back home on O'ahu. I also just wanted to say that I sometimes see the owners at Ho'omau and they're SO nice and so inviting, girls working there are also very nice. But this one girl today, omg. So there were two girls on 6/9/26 at a couple of minutes before 4. One of the two girls were okay, but the other... let me tell you. I picked something up to try on because I have had my eye on this style of dress online for the longest time and was excited to see it in person. I was going wait for them to come to O'ahu but thought since I'm on vacation, I thought maybe I wouldn't have to wait to get it. Alohiwai is actually one of the first stores I always choose being a VIP at Ho'omau. I was in the dressing room trying on the one dress I took in, LOVED it, decided I was going to make a last minute purchase, and was almost about to come out, when I hear the other girl of the two say, "hey.. so we close at 4 and it's 4:04. So you kinda need to wrap it up" I didn't say anything because I was actually taken aback. I didn't get to see what she looked like, but my sister did. This girl worker, btw, was wearing an off the shoulder white top with curly hair and has tattoos on her shoulders 6/9/26 @ 4:04pm (& yes, I know the exact time to the minute since this worker was in a rush to get home). This worker lacked SO much professional ediquette. In the moment, I was in shock to have been talked to that way from a brand I actually REALLY loved and wanted to go back inside the store, but thought writing a review would be better. (couldn't if I wanted to because they were 4 minutes past closing time) Overall, I'm disappointed and just thought that that first experience IN STORE was a sour one. I ended up not buying anything in store because I felt rushed with the store being closed for 4 minutes. The unprofessional worker was assisting another customer and was being so helpful and professional with her, so maybe she took out her frustrations of wanting to go home right at 4:00pm on the dot with me? Not sure. But I took my business down to all the other stores down the row with better customer service. This experience was so negative for me that I'm questioning taking my business for Ho'omau this weekend when I get back home to O'ahu. Always love shopping at their booth, but for sure NEVER coming back to their home location.
