If you go to this restaurant be sure to eat first! Don't expect good timely service. We were a party of 5 and thought at first we were in a good place. There was a lot of people and the outdoor patios seemed nice. However, after waiting for 1 1/2 hours to finally get our food. The food was very cold and our meat was very under cooked, like in raw, we ordered medium well. Very small portions besides. I guess that is fine dining:) little food for a good amount of money. We were there for more than 2 hours and the owner just reprimanded us for not giving them the opportunity to make it right. She only saw it as our fault, as she said, they had a lot of people there to serve. I guess that was our fault too. We were hungry and very disappointed enough! After a nice and delicious meal with exceptional service last June (2017) we returned anticipating a similar experience on June 3, 2018. The restaurant was quite busy! (Apparently, not only did our waitress have us to wait on, but another party of 14 in an adjoining room.) Unfortunately, the service to our party of six was very slow. After a little wait for our beverages, we also had quite a longer wait for the salads and one appetizer. The calamari was rubbery & barely warm. It was redone but remained very chewy. Three of our group's six meals (two of the Beef Wellington's and the duck breast plates) were lukewarm and one of the steaks was undercooked. We asked for help in trying to reheat the duck dinner and received a second serving that was not much warmer. The steak was redone. After asking to speak to the manager, we had another wait. When he finally appeared, I left our table to speak with him. He told me that all three of the meals could not have been just lukewarm. He did not want to believe me nor come to our table to ask my wife and uncle about their meals. I asked to receive a credit or discount for those meals. While another waitress did bring 3 glasses of complimentary wine to attempt to make amends, the final bill showed only a credit for the duck dinner. When I asked our waitress to ask the manager for another discount of $30.00-$50.00 (on our $253.00 bill) she told me that the manager refused. It remains a question as to whether we and the others in our party will ever return to this establishment due to this experience with the food, service, and in particular, the manager's attitude. If you do choose to check it out, I would strongly recommend an evening when they are not very busy! Hopefully, the service and temperatures of your meals will be much more prompt and enjoyable. read more

My wife and I have been going to Bells for years. It's really a cool place that you have to check out. The have a fabulous outdoor area, and even built a really cool outdoor bar. We love the historic indoor bar as well. They have a great menu, and some of the best bartenders in any of the places we go. It's a decent watering hole for locals, but beyond the bar, it's abysmal. I've tried it a number of times over the years when returning to the area to visit family because friends always want to meet there (again, the bar). But the food is very poor quality, clearly the cheapest cuts of everything off the truck. They even use the cheapest oils and herbs. As if that weren't bad enough, the kitchen has consistently failed to cook my or my guests meats to proper specification. And you dare not complain, because the insane owner will rush to your table and begin to interrogate you like a Nazi Gestapo. He started barking at me why I did not say this instead of that, and why he was right and I was wrong. He was just about yelling at me. I must assume that the only reason this terrible restaurant owner is still in business is that Netcong locals run a hefty bar tab. AVOID THIS PLACE. read more

I have critiqued many places. Bell's Mansion is a hidden gem!! Loved our waitress Maryann. Great wine menu. The food is excellent and priced reasonable. I was dining with my fiance. Ordered a bottle of Chard at a fair price. Had kielbasa and sauerkraut appetizer. Very good. I ordered their Ribeye Special for the night cooked medium rare. When it came out it was overcooked to medium well. I wasn't going to make a big deal over this because it tasted good on flavor. The waitress checked our meals' quality in good time. I mentioned my steak and she very nicely and cordially wanted to correct things immediately. I was skeptical of turn around time on preparing a new meal as it typically ruins the flow of dinner as my partner would be nearly done as I would get my replacement meal. This has been my experience at many other restaurants. The waitress checked on turn around time and came right back and said they could have a new meal out in a few minutes. I said, ok, I'll run with it. Sure enough, a new meal was out in maybe 3 minutes. It was perfect! I was thoroughly impressed. This is only possible in a well-run kitchen and kudos to the Master chef. Bell's Mansion will be always be on my list of top places to go. The ambiance of the outdoor patio is excellent. Noise is low even if fully patroned. Inside is charming for the colder weather with many small dining rooms. I like this approach the most, because it gives you some privacy and helps keep noise manageable so you really enjoy the experience. Once again, Bell's Mansion is an absolute hit!!!!!! My family and I were on the kind of closed in patio. Had some delicious chicken joshua as well as the Mediterranean Platter as an appetizer. Extensive beer, wine, and liquor list and yummy desserts. Heard really good things going into the meal and yet somehow it still exceeded expectations. Tried the beef Wellington, pork Osso buco, spinach dip, and lamb rack. Really disappointing. I drove a couple of hours from the city to meet my friend, and we were ready to have a nice, relaxing evening. The outside garden area is so pretty, and the live music was pretty good. The waitstaff and host are very friendly. Sounds like the perfect setup to a great night, right? Wrong. It started it with a few hiccups/delays on our drink order. My cocktail came eventually, but we had to ask twice for my friend's soda and the carafe of water. We waited exceptionally long for the bread as well. The table next to us who came much after us had theirs way before us. Our server ended up bringing it all to us after we caught one of the other servers cleaning off the table next to us. Okay fine. Now onto the food... The fried green tomatoes app was decent. The breading could have used some seasoning. It was just plain batter and plain tomato. Came with a small portion of dipping sauce, but not enough for the four large pieces. Food wasnt hot. Entrees... My friend ordered the penne vodka, and I ordered the cedar plank salmon. My salmon was dry and had a different aftertaste--not pleasant. I wasn't sure if it was the cedar, or if maybe the fish was farmed instead of wild caught. I'm used to wild, and I have heard there is a taste difference. Regardless, the fish was dry and overseasoned. There was supposed to be a lemon sauce, but mine didn't have any--just a salty, peppery seasoning crusted on top. My mashed sweet potato and zucchini sides were ok, but that's pretty hard to screw up. The food wasn't hot. Seemed like it had been sitting a while, which is maybe why the fish was dry. My friend sent back her penne because she said it tasted like the cream turned. She was also experiencing an aftertaste. The owner was nice enough and switched out a replacement meal. My friend decided to replace with a crab cake BLT, side of tartar sauce. We waited a half hour for her meal. When it finally came, her tartar sauce wasn't there, and the meal looked revolting. The bacon looked rubbery and the crab cake was not a patty at all. It looked like a disintegrated mess on her plate. At this point, she was do disgusted with the lack of service (even though our waiter was friendly, he rarely checked on us), the huge delays, and the poor quality food, that she couldn't even eat her fries. We had originally planned to order coffee at least or another cocktail (my original cocktail was pretty good), but we decided to end the night early. About $70 in the hole now for food we couldn't even enjoy. Definitely not coming back. read more

Had early dinner on Monday night in June '09, while traveling. The two waitresses on duty seemed indecisive about seating us, but did eventually. The room was very nice. I ordered a beer, but after quite a wait was informed they were out of this brand. My second choice was also out (this at a place featuring their Tap Room!), but I settled for Blue Moon. I had a nice, relaxing visit to Bell's Mansion. Not too far from Waterloo Village, this family friendly restaurant offers a creative mix of American, Polish, and Italian fare. The staff was amiable and helpful. The bar had that old time feel with the large wooden bar shelf and stained Tiffany glass. The bar menu offered an excellent mix of domestic, imported, and micro brewed beers on tap and in bottle and a great selection of liqours and wines. I enjoyed a few large glasses of ywiec pilsner. The appetizers were enticing. The jalapeno pierogi's were quite delicious. I also found the warm brie salad quite compelling. The Chicken Joshua was tasty with it's panko coating and bruschetta and fresh mozzarella topping. The service was prompt and our servers were very attentive. During dessert we were treated by the house to a peach dessert wine (Nalewka Babuni, I believe) which was refreshing after a meal on the outdoor dining patio. We had a disappointing experience for the first time. Our waitress admitted she was new. She seemed overly busy and at one point she tipped over the water glass onto a freshly served dinner. She took it away and was gone a long time. She returned with the wine list because she forgot what we ordered. When she finally brought the wine, she didn't know how to open it and disappeared again looking for help. The apple guacamole is delicious, their martini menu is stellar and worth the menu, and everything tastes fresh. Poor management. Food service was slow. Soups were cold. Had to send dishes back. Didn't refill water until we were ready to leave. They need to seriously reevaluate how they run their establishment. Very inconsistent. I asked for tartar sauce and they did not bring it until I had almost finished my meal. When did they think I wanted it. To top that off, I ordered their soup of the day, cream of tomato, and they brought it to me cold. I sent it back and then the again returned with a cold soup. I also ordered fried calamari that was cold and stale, Very disappointed. When I asked for the manager, she came over, took my soup and never returned with it. I like the bits of history all over. Menu was a bit pricier than your chain restaurants but it's on par for the menu options and quality. The establishment was clean. Staff was professional and kind. Service was fine, but overall a disappointing meal. We started off with mussels and clams, which were done well. Broth was fine, and they were all open when served. I had a taste of the lobster bisque, and I give that a thumbs up. I was disappointed the bar wouldn't or couldn't make a daiquiri - not some frozen college-age thing, but a proper one - its rum, lime juice, and simple syrup - is there something so tricky about that? The main course, however, was horrid. I had diver scallops which instead of being seared looked like they got their color from being swirled in burnt grease in the bottom of a skillet. The dish was supposed to contain pancetta, but I have an overwhelming suspicion that what I was eating was just a diced ham steak. I would have chalked it up to just a bad chef moment if the coworker next to me didn't also receive a rack of lamb, ordered "medium" that had just been totally killed. Doesn't anyone look at a plated dish before its sent out in this place? I've had a decent meal there before, but if I visit again, they'd better knock it out of the park or they go on my places-not-to-eat-at-while-on-business-trips list.. read more

Tonight we went out to dinner with friends. This used to be one of our favorite places to go. We were told the chef is new and the menu was changed. They took off Filet Mignon off the menu. When we asked why they said the new chef has his own menu. One of our dinners had to be sent back because it was made with hot pepper. There was no mention of the peppers on the menu. When the bill came they forgot to take that dinner off the bill, it had to be adjusted. It was a very disappointing evening. We also tried to talk to the owner and our complaints were meet with a take it or leave it attitude. Unfortunate experience! read more

Was not wowed by this place at all. The decor and color choices are dismal. Including the 1980's ceiling fans. Even the menu looks dismal, and choices are ok? Owners need to cheer the place up!! Nice quiet atmosphere with small intimate rooms... they have a really beautiful old bar, service was good. interesting drinks menu... Although the food can be hit or miss here, I have had some really great dishes like their tuna, and their perogees are the real deal. My boyfriend and I had a WONDERFUL experience here. As opposed to one large dining room, they have many dining rooms. We sat in a very small dining room called the music room, and our waitress explained to us that when Bell's Mansion was a residence, a piano was in this room. Our waitress was VERY professional, friendly, and accommodating. The food was absolutely DELICIOUS. Everything was cooked perfectly and plated beautifully. The prices were very reasonable for such great food. We loved the ambiance and historic atmosphere very much as well. They gave us a complimentary shot of Polish wine at the end too. One of the finest places I have EVER been to for dinner. We cannot wait to come back. Highly recommended to anyone who wants to have a great dining experience! read more

This place is great! My husband took me on our very first date here and we had a terrific time. We loved it so much that we went back for our first Valentine's day together and we've taken family there for special occasion meals. The food is ourstanding and the atmosphere is relaxing but also romantic. The service is always great too. Keep in mind that the food is not cheap but you get what you pay for. Had a very pleasant evening on the patio of Bell's Mansion. We had sangrias and apple guacamole which were fantastic. For our entrees, my hubby got the filet lava stone... fun experience cooking on it and delicious while I had a grilled chicken Caesar salad. I love the fact that you can choose either a big dinner or a lighter option. Homemade bread was delicious too!
