Bed Bugs and Shady Management I stayed here on July 22, 2020. Great check in and looked like a clean place. At 2:30am I was woken up by 2 bites on my face. I stripped the bed and found bed bugs and other insects under the pillow, on the floor, and on the carpet. I went to the office and there was a sign saying ring the Ring device for after-hours service. I attempted to ring the Ring device for about 30 minutes, along with calling the phone number with no joy in contacting management. At 3:00am I returned to my room and removed my belongings to prevent the insects from entering my luggage. I pulled up a chair and sat outside the lobby for another 2.5 hours trying the Ring device and phone number, hoping to reach management and get at least some sleep that night. At 5:00am I left one last message on their answering machine then left Spearfish. I recieved a call hours after I left, sometime before lunch. The manager said that sitting in front of the lobby was "bizzare" and I "should have gotten a room somewhere else" if I couldn't reach management. This is not a solution when a guest has a problem at your establishment, and frankly it's poor business management. I left a review on Google immediately after I left, to prevent anyone else from dealing with thebed bugs in my room. Management replied to my Google review and attempted to make me out as a shady individual who roams the grounds at night. Going so far as to say I "disturbed the other guests" by waiting by the lobby for someone to show up. Was I supposed to stay in my infested room all night until management stumbled in sometime in the late morning, after leaving the property unattended at night? Also, I doubt I disturbed the other guests with my sitting because I can tell you that I was the only one there. Management can't say the same, as they were gone and unreachable for the entire night. This business is extremely shady, and I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Wow, this place was an unexpected surprise! The exterior only tells part of the tale. The sign is either original and extremely well kept, or is new and done in a very cool, retro style. The exterior and the grounds are immaculate and show a lot of pride. It was Scott, the owner, that checked my daughter and I in during a recent motorcycle trip. You don't meet inn keepers like him much any more. He was extremely friendly and eager to offer suggestions and advice and answer questions. He has menu's from several local eateries on hand, and he has some great maps and he was really gracious and marked some places we were interested in on one for us. There is an outside heated pool that my daughter really enjoyed. It was sparkling clean and the entire area around it was clean and well kept as well. Our room was large and extremely well maintained. Nothing looked or felt worn or dated. It was retro to be sure, but everything was very nice. The AC worked great, the bed was very comfortable. It was an excellent value. Spearfish is a great town. Unfortunately because of it's proximity to quite a bit of tourist type stuff there are quite a few of the big chain motels here. Most are double the price of Bells and not near as charming, and you don't get a gracious host like Scott to help you out. There is a covered sitting area outside the front of each room, and plenty of chairs. It was a great spot to sit and chat with some of our fellow travelers. When in the area again I won't consider staying anywhere else. It's a great value and just a cool spot. It has a charm and ambiance you don't often find anymore. Secluded in a quaint small town near restaurants and cheap shopping. The space heater heat was funny but extremely effective. Stayed an extra day so I was pleased. Close to Deadwood, SD too. Friendly hotel, very helpful. read more

People must have been dwarves in the 50s when this was built. The tinyest room I ever rented. The toilet needs a gymnastics manuver just to sit down even then youre wedged against the wall and chin almost in the sink. Rooms keeper banging doors at 8am. Tv and cable were fine. This place is most definitely where you want to stay while traveling via SD. I went here after reading so many reviews online about the establishment. unfortunately there were no rooms available with my needs online. So I called up the number and Scott picks up the call. He runs one of the best motels in the west I can say. He did find me a kitchenette within my budget and also made the booking an easy process. I check in and he gives me all the info i need to know to fill my evening there at spearfish. This is a really small motel with the essential stuff inside and no worries you will be taken care once you are there! read more

Booked this room while on the road and arrived around 10pm . The man at the front desk was super friendly and chatted with us about the sights around the area while we checked in . He upgraded us to a king room no extra charge and gave us a $5 off military discount . This place is pet friendly, they charged us $3 pet fee ...which is amazing! The motel is older , but very charming and well kept . Rooms are super clean and have the softest sheets i have ever slept on in a motel . The area is quiet and close to food and gas. If your stopping in Spearfish definitely stay here its very low priced ad i said very clean and comfortable (our bed had a memory foam mattress ) read more

Loved it. Very clean & quiet (part of the motel is away from the road so if you need quiet and privacy it's do-able.) Polite owner & immaculate remodeled bathroom in the unit I stayed in. Nice 60's vintage motel. Nothing fancy, just clean and simple. pet friendly. Our single queen size room was small. Frig and micro in room. bed has one of the most comfortable beds I have slept on in a motel. No breakfast, but there is coffee in the lobby. walking distance to downtown area. We called to find a place in Spearfish, and Scott told us all about this wonderful canyon and town! He is friendly, informative and a perfect host! We HAD to stay at Bell's Motor Lodge! Our room was large and roomy, with a comfy bed! The furnishings fit right in with the motel motif, and everything was CLEAN, clean, clean!!! The weather was rainy and cold, but we were cozy and warm in this great valued motel room! Scott does an excellent job keeping the rooms welcoming and fine! It was a bit late and we asked for some restaurant suggestions, but also checked out the extensive info in the room - complete with menus! Scott really makes the businesses an important part of local business, and when we told the owner of the Bay Leaf Cafe where we were staying, she was pleased too! The Bell Motor Lodge is not only a great value, it is a charming place to stay! The outside heated pool looked inviting - for warmer weather! The whole courtyard is well maintained and very inviting - a great place for kids and families too! Spearfish is a great town - especially when entering from the gorgeous canyon! Locals go to see the fall colors, and it does not disappoint. A great jumping off point for lots of close attractions - but this is the place to stay! If you are looking for cheap, clean, comfy bed for the night....this is the place!! Also a great coffee and breakfast restaurant right next door!! Also, we are on Harleys. The next morning, we had bike towels outside our room to wipe off our bikes!!! We will be back! Thank you!! read more

Stayed 7/2-7/6 had a wonderful experience. The rooms were clean, I could smell the bleach used to clean the bathrooms, which I appreciated. The carpeting, bathroom floor, and tv were all new. The furniture that was older in the room, was still in good condition. They are clearly in the process of making updates. They have WiFi, which was a bonus I wasn't expecting. The staff was friendly, and helpful. Plenty of pillows and linens. The only thing I would change was the bed. I did get a good night's sleep every night, but the mattress was very soft. Overall, I would absolutely recommend them! The price can't be beat, and the proximity to the green bean coffee shop and town, along with all the pluses I mentioned before, make it a very appealing accommodation. read more

Hidden gem! Cheap and clean. It's nothing fancy but it for our needs as we were just passing through. It's near a grocery store and several places to eat. My only complaint was the thin walls. I could hear our neighbor cough and sneeze. Otherwise, you can't beat it for the price! Scott is extremely friendly! read more
