I'm conflicted about this review. Absolutely stay here for the location. It felt like the lodge was a little tired for the price charged, and was trying hard to be fancier than it is. Staff was nice, room was clean. But the wear on the structure is starting to show. Sink faucet was broken, shower didn't drain well, carpet on stairs is worn, marks on hallways and doors, electronic locks on exterior doors were difficult to operate, exterior siding damage etc. Stayed 3 nights and a large bag of hotel trash, ripped open by animals, sat at the right end door for 2 of those days. Sheets on the bed were scratchy. They also have crappy coffee bags (like tea bags) in disposable plastic trays which I would expect from a sub $100 lodging facility. I would love to see K-cup machines in the rooms. Latchstring across the street does have coffee to go however they don't open until 7AM. Did utilize laundry facilities and they were good and reasonably prices ($4.50 per load if I recall correctly) Loved being able to hike straight from the hotel in the early morning and evening after dinner, renting a UTV across the street and the Latchstring restaurant was very good. They also have a small bar in the lobby where you can take drinks to the patio, and robes to use at the hot tubs (did not use so can't comment) Do recommend a room number above 117/217 as those are away from the road which has a good amount of traffic. Even overlooks the driveway and odd overlooks the road (under X17) and trees (above X17). Overall I would probably stay again, depending on price.

Great customer service and great experience

Love the place. Good people, nice rooms and great service! The Canyon is spectacular, and the Lodge is well positioned to show it!

Didn't have to see a person at all, which is great for someone like me lol Others may not appreciate the impersonal nature of the transaction as much as I did. Room was large, bed was huge and comfortable, linens smelled fresh. Furnishings were suitable for the theme of the Inn. Breakfast was adequate- yogurt, fruit, some packaged muffins, mini bagels, juice and coffee. Perfectly fine. You should be made aware when you book, but there's no elevator so you're carrying your bags up those steps (see my pics). We were here at the end of September during some sort of freak heat wave and the poor little window AC was doing its best to keep up. I was comfortable; my husband was hot. I just appreciated they had AC at all. It's just a very large room with high ceilings to try to cool with a small unit.

Quiet little street (I'm a city girl) - can see Mine from window looking out front of 2nd story. If you are from the country, you will think it is a highway out front. I lived by the freeway in MN so this is quiet to me. Room has everything a girl needs, except food - and that is walking distance. On second look, there is coffee and water in the lobby. You can probably find a muffin or tangerine in the fridge if you want a little snack. Cute little park area (very small, think tiny mountain town) across the street to walk dogs. Flowers are gorgeous. More later...

It had a mini fridge and microwave. The hotel had guest laundry available also. It broke during our stay, but was repaired in a couple of days. The AC was more of a window unit, and when on ran all the time. It was rather loud. The room was either warm or pretty chilly. They do serve a hot breakfast, however, it was the same exact thing everyday. Eggs, sausage and hash browns. To be honest, the food was not great. Thank goodness there was a waffle maker. That's what we primarily ate. Hotel also had a bar/lounge as well. The hotel is in a great location, not to far from many attractions. The rates are very reasonable. We would probably stay again, but just because of location and rates. If you are a person that spends a lot of time at your hotel when traveling, I probably wouldn't recommend.

The only reason we rented a room here for 4 in our group because the ad says it sleeps 6. We reserved through Expedia which defaults to 2 and forgot to change it. We acknowledged 4 would be staying with us when checking in and she charged us extra for that as well. I recommend the Hampton Inn up the street where the rest of our group stayed. It was cheaper and sooo much nicer and free breakfast.

Some of the cabins are new and some are modernized older buildings. We loved the rustic interior of our cabin and, being used to camping, appreciated the basic kitchen and bathroom with shower. Wickiup Village is a short distance from a lot of great South Dakota attractions: Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse memorial, the Needles Highway, and the towns of Deadwood and Lead. You can even get to Wall Drug and Badlands National Park within two hours. There is a store and restaurant within easy walking distance, which came in handy. The staff was great and went out of their way to make sure everything was going well. This might not be the place for you if you're used to five-star hotels, but if you want to stay in a place with charm and unique character, don't pass up Wickiup Village.
