We came in for lunch on a week day, and we arrived just before the lunch rush around 11am. I had heard this place has one of the best salads in Columbia, and it was big and delicious. The staff was very friendly. Ambiance is like a deli style fast casual spot. - Cobb salad (4/5): The salad was a large portion, with lots of bacon, chicken, cheese, blue cheese. Great combination and delicious lunch option. Comes with dressing on the side. I got ranch which was perfect. - Steak and burrata sandwich (3.5/5): This sandwich was the special of the day. The bread was perfectly toasted, buttery. Good portion of steak, which was cooked well. The sandwich was juicy, good flavor overall with pesto. I don't normally write reviews on restaurants but I received a $40 gift certificate last year to Hoss's and didn't realized they had been purchased by Belly. My impression was that when you buy a business and keep it as the same type of business you also buy their debt which includes gift cards. I called and the "owner" told us tough luck. They were really pretty rude so I won't be patronizing this business. There are so many other restaurants in Columbia that I'll take my business elsewhere rather than supporting a grill that doesn't care about the impression they create with patrons. (Plus I've read some pretty distasteful reviews here anyway.) Maybe it saved me from a nasty bout of food poisoning. read more

I have ordered from here several times using grub hub. The burgers are good and the pea salad is awesome. I always have to get the smoked wings and their ranch is fantastic. We just adored Hoss's, and the new owners of the renamed "Belly" (gross name) have updated the look for sure, but the food quality and choices have plummeted. VERY few menu options. All the fun wines and cheeses and spices and gifts and canned stuffs are gone. Old lunch favorites are gone (they claim they will still make them: why are they not on the menu, then??). And a couple of days ago was the last straw: my husband was eating his salad WHEN A BUG JUMPED OUT. He picked up the large piece of lettuce from which it appeared, and there was dirt all over it. And the seafood gumbo was NOT how it used to be -- had a weird fishy smell and milky and lukewarm. He got food poisoning -- I'll admit, there's no way to know for sure if it was at "Belly" -- but sure seems a strange coincidence. Josh and I are so very grateful and blown away by the service we received from Hoss's Catering in Columbia MO for our Wedding. From our first tasting which was more like a full thanksgiving meal (they gave us full-size chicken!) to the service received on our day was top notch. Hoss's catering staff treated us with the utmost professionalism and provided great table service. The biggest pet peeve of ours is when guests are done eating and plates sit and sit on the table before they are cleared, needless to say, we did not experience that. Hoss's also accommodated some of our more non-standard requests when it came to how the salad was served, cake cutting, and late-night appetizers. Our guests were very satisfied and we have received many compliments on the food. The food we chose for our big day, buffet style, chicken dijon, beef brisket, garlic parmesan mashers, homestyle green beans, and Pasta Al Fredo. Yum! Pulled pork sandwich was amazing. It has Cole slaw in it, which worked perfectly in the sandwich. However, ordered some on the side and it was too soupy. Also had a size of the broccoli salad, which also was a bit too soupy and sweet. So, I subtracted a star just because of the sides. Stumbled across this place, while taking our newborn child to the doctor. Actually, my wife spotted it as we drove past. Glad I turned around! Doing so made both my wife and stomach very happy. I ordered their Fish & Chips. To be honest, the Cod was the best I've eaten since living on the Oregon coastline. Even better is it was cooked perfectly! One of the folks with me for lunch ordered a baguette to go. He said that it is fresh and just right crusty. Since I am here for a business lunch, I was boring and ordered the Cobb salad. They have a ton of cool food items, kind of a mix of high quality food products such as condiments, snacks, sweets, pasta, sauces, etc. by different brands and some of their own homemade items too. Lots of Mizzou merchandise also including clothing and such. Once I bought their pork chop with brandy peppercorn sauce meal and added roasted potatoes and green beans. I also got a pound of their spicy smoked chicken wings and took it all home. It was all delicious and the pork chop dinner was enough for two meals. I also have tried their Prime Rib (which I think is only on Fridays) and it was enough for two days of food again and was moist and tender. I also recommend the lobster bisque when they have it. It's creamy and has chunks of real lobster in it. I do think the prices are a bit high there for a lot of their products though. I was looking at jars of their homemade salsa and I thought the $6.99-7.99 price tag was a bit excessive for the amount given. The meals can be pricey too although you do get quite a lot. Okay, I can only rate this place on it's BBQ beans. Because what else matters, really? I mean, beans take a lot to get right, and it's easy to do mediocre. Anyhow, they are the magical fruit, right? Anyhow, I saw Hoss's at the roots, blues, and bbq thing in Columbia, and tried their beans. Lots of big chunks of some sort of meat, and a good spice. They also do non-bbq catering, and it's above-the-line kind of stuff, even if they use some sort of chinese-take-out sauce for the hor's douvres. It looks like from their web site that they make take-home meals, soups, and their specialty, rotisserie chicken. So someone needs to actually visit this place and report back with more bbq data. read more

We stopped by here on Tuesday for a quick lunch. My husband got a Rubin Sandwich with coleslaw and I had al pull pork and potato salad. We were quite disappointed with our meals. My pull pork was cold and flavorless. The potato salad had very little flavor and the potatoes were bearly cooked. My husband was surprised at so little meat on the sandwich and the coleslaw was bland. We will not be back. read more

Amazing as always. When I'm in town I eat here or carry out least once and maybe twice a day. Fresh food, great staff and portions are always generous and enough for leftovers. This week I enjoyed 4 days of great food including a delicious Cobb Salad lots of chicken and fresh veggies - Just off the grill chicken sandwich - not on menu but they fixed it because I said "I wish u had a grill chicken sand." Well today we stopped in for lunch with our two little girls and had a wonderful lunch. Over the years we have periodically eaten or picked up food from Hoss's and have never been disappointed. Tonight we splurged and got their Valentine dinner for two. 2 filets, one 11 ounce lobster tail, 2 twice baked potatoes, 2 rolls, a large Caesar salad, and 2 truffles. Everything was excellent. I can truly say the steaks were probably the best I have ever eaten. We will think of Hoss's more often when thinking about where to pick up dinner. read more

Hoss's Restaurant in Columbia has the BEST FOOD EVER!!!!! I first ate here as a recommendation from my hair stylist a couple months ago. Ever since then, I've eaten Hoss's food 4 or 5 times a week, plus I leave with a carry-out or two. The food is absolutely 100% home made from scratch, right down to the salad dressings & soups. "Hoss's Famous Enchiladas" on the Tuesday dinner menu are so delicious that I eat them in the restaurant AND take an order home when I leave! Three DELICIOUS crispy corn tortillas with Hoss's special creamy chicken filling, topped with a cheesy sauce. "Chicken fried Chicken breast" on Monday night is crispy & so tender you can cut with a fork. The smoked meats, steak & seafood are top quality. Their mashed potatoes are REAL potatoes that they boil, (not instant potatoes) & they are flavored with real butter...not margarine. Other fantastic sides are creamed spinach, scalloped potatoes, sauteed vegetables...the list goes on & on. You can ignore any nasty reviews you might read about Hoss's. They are posted by people who obviously don't know what GOOD FOOD is. And the prices are NOT too high!!. I've known people who pay more money for sub- quality food at fast-food restaurants. Okay, "WOW - Hoss's is AMAZING", are the words that pretty much sums up my recent experience with Hoss's! Osborn Barr, the company I work for, recently used Hoss's for a tailgate at Mizzou and could not have been happier with every aspect of their catering expertise. Not only was Trish incredibly responsive, but she was pro-active when it came to the game time announcement and updated options, and as a meeting coordinator, I truly appreciated that, as that is an almost unheard of quality in any service based business these days. When it came to game day (or morning, as was the case of our Tailgate), they were on time, coordinated set up of the various groups immaculately, and the food was AMAZING, as was the staff. Every member of the Hoss's team was stellar and professional - I was so impressed as were all of our tailgate attendees. It was their special touch that made this the "best tailgate event ever" - which I heard several times throughout the morning. Would I use Hoss's again? Quaint place, half shop, half restaurant. They've got coffee, and desserts as well. This place has more character than most spots in South Columbia (not the 'cool' part of town). The food- great. The treatment of paying customers- HORRIBLE. I work just across the street from Hoss' but I will never be back. I informed the staff that I have a dairy allergy. They put cheese all over my food. When I called them to state the error, it was "Oh well, you didn't say cheese specifically. So what do you want us to do about it!?"
