I tried to go to three smog places this week. The first one had two cars already lined up in their driveway and no where to turn in, let alone park and wait. The second was busy and had a ton of cars parked on both sides with barely anywhere to turn around to leave. The third had the same issue with parked cars, hardly any space to turn around, plus an employee who ignored me when I arrived to ask if they could perform the service. Frustrating to say the least. Finally I landed at the 76 station on the corner of Fifth and Ralston and they were able to test my car quickly and efficiently. I had a problem with my Mercedes for about 4 months with a growling noise issue. A repair shop diagnosed it as needing engine mounts. After they changed engine mounts, the problem persisted. I took it to Mercedes dealer who said engine mounts were still bad. I went back to repair shop and told them, but they accused dealer of trying to rip me off. While visiting Belmont a buddy of mine recommended that I take it to Belmont 76 Service who diagnosed it as a transmission mount failure. A couple of hours later, their diagnosis proved accurate and precise. Now I have my car running very smoothly, thanks to Naj and Mike. Excellent job, gentlemen. I'm not going to go into specifics but this guy Najeep literally lies to your face. He doesn't care about your property or anything other than ripping people off. He brags about what he has and talks down on people with less than him. He is an a-hole. Don't give this guy your money when there's actually nice people out there who make you feel welcomed and give fair pricing for a much better quality of work. He owns tons of stuff anyways so he won't suffer. He is not a struggling mom and pop shop. If you care about your car go somewhere else, I promise you won't regret it. I had work done here that was EXTREMELY minimal and was charged over $1,000. I went to a different shop who is a specialist and am having very extensive work done that is only a fraction more of the cost than what I paid for the bare minimum work this guy did. Requested smog check on my 99 Toyota Landcruiser and was scheduled the same day I called. Dropped off my vehicle, wrote-up the necessary paperwork and was told will take an hour to complete. So I decided to do my walking exercise to kill time. Was surprised that only about 30 minutes in to my walk, received a call that my vehicle is ready! quick update..the reasons I didnt come back for re-service under warranty is to prevent further damage that may cost more money for me.So instead I went to my regular mechanic in Daly City and only charge $360 for the same work --brakes and synthetic oil change!!! They charged me $230 to tighten my lug nuts on one wheel when I brought my car in for a strange noise in the back. It was a total money grab which is unfortunate because I live really close by. I really appreciate that they're open late on the weekend for smog checks! I called about 5 other places in the area after 5pm on a Saturday and their smog technicians were either gone or they just weren't providing a smog check on the weekend. I called around 5:45pm and they could take me at 6:30pm that day. Naj is very nice. He saw I was a little alarmed at the $59 smog check fee and immediately gave me $10 off. Of course, there is still the standard $8.25 California fee, but that was nice of him. I looked up prices later and it seems you can get a smog check for as low as $29 or as high as $130. Belmont is a nice area and I appreciate their hours and flexibility, so I think that's worth costing a little more (but still being on the low end of smog checks!). He estimated it would take 20 minutes to do the smog check, but they were done in 12! Naj also talked to us a for a little bit. His brother (or cousin?) is the owner of Philz Coffee! Small world. Great guys who go above and beyond in a world where most go below and short. Fit me in when Les Schwab wouldn't - For a variety of reasons (below), I needed to get 5 tires mounted a balanced quickly. I went down early, before the tires were delivered, and checked with Naj to see if he could work me in later in the day. He said, "If you come back between 12-2". I was able to get in by 1:45, and they hooked me up. Further, because I live close by, Naj loaded up my old tires in the back of his pickup and dropped them off at my house so I can sell them. Who does that these days? Why I was in a hurry: - I am installing a new suspension today - Tires were arriving yesterday - I went to Les Schwab in San Carlos and they declined to install tires not purchased at their store "for liability reasons." I've never used the service station portion of this shop but I've been here to fill up my gas tank a few times. They open early in the morning but they don't appear to stay open that late. Gas prices are fine. Not outrageous but it also wouldn't be your first stop of you got off the highway as there are two closer gas stations on either side of Ralston (with better hours) as you approach caltrain. I think there's only 4 total pumps here and it's not the easiest place to get in and out of, but it's never crowded. They're doing a thing for a free lottery ticket raffle type contest if you fill up with over $30 in gas but the two times I've come here since that started, there's never been a person manning the gas station desk to allow me to claim that and I don't really want to have to interrupt the mechanic side for what is essentially a raffle gimmick... though I do love me some lottery tickets. read more

OK. I'm not one to slam a local business, but my experience was so bad that I have no choice. I took my car here for a smog test before I was going to sell it. The car failed and they recommended that I needed to replace the catalytic converter and they wanted a lot of money to do so. I told them that I had just had the catalytic converter replaced and that I needed to call the shop that did the previous work. The shop that replaced the catalytic converter one year prior decided to replace it for free since it was under warranty. When I told 76 that I was going to pick up the car and have the work done elsewhere, they gave me a hard time. He got mad and said that the shop that had done the work wasn't authorized to do this work. He wrote a nasty note on the receipt and left it in the car for me to pick up after hours. This is not how you should treat customers or anybody for that matter. read more

Do NOT go to this place for auto work. My Acura Integra won't start after gym one night. AAA towing guy recommended this place, which is around the corner from where i parked. AAA towing guy guessed it is electric igniter that's burned. "300 bucks or so." he said. I took my car into this service center. half an hour later, owner of the place Najid(?) called me and said it is a $1200 job because he needs to replace the entire electric system!!! I expressed surprise and said i would take it else where for a quote. Upon hearing this, he said, okay i can do minimum work to get it running, that requires changing the distributor, plus labor, it is $880. I took it to an auto shop in San Mateo specialized in Honda/Acura instead. it is just a $200 job (including labor AND part)! my car is running fine now. all it needed was replacing electric igniter coil. bloody greed dripping from this place... stay AWAY from this place unless you have too much money to burn. oh yeah, it charged me $120 for INSPECTION, i.e. for giving me the $1200 quote. read more

Today I stopped by this gas station with my friend so that I could get air in my tire that was low. Last I checked, air is free and usually continues to be free. I've gotten gas here several times as well, so it was my surprise when my girlfriend came back to the car and said he wouldn't turn it on for us- at least until we bought gas. I was confounded. Never have I had to get gas in order to get air... What if I had a flat tire? I went inside in order to sort this out. I mentioned that I had gotten gas there several times and that I didn't see what the problem was. He decided to turn it on. The one thing that really stuck out to me and my friend was the difference in treatment we both received. You see, she's African American. I'm Caucasian. We really can't say for sure if this treatment was because of this (for all we know, it could be because we're both women or that this guy really is that stingy) but it stung either way. Not how either of us wanted to start our MLK holiday... UPDATE- The business owner/manager (?) personally reached out to me within the hour and expressed his concerns regarding our experience here. His kind apology made me feel so much better about the experience and it's refreshing to know that there are still business owners that take their customers' experience very seriously! I ended up here by unfortunate circumstance one day: I was dropped off there by a tow truck driver who didn't know where else to put me and my broken down vehicle. I had passed this place many, many times but never stopped because, well, let's just say gas is too damn expensive and overpriced in Belmont, compared to say San Mateo or Redwood City, so why bother? I assumed their service work would be also inflated price with little substance. Boy was I wrong. They quickly figured out I needed both a new battery and alternator. I know this isn't exactly "rocket science mechanicking". But MOST IMPORTANTLY, the owner and lead mechanic was able to diagnosis and figure out a nagging, long-term vacuum leak which has been causing me very poor performance and stress for a LONG time. No one could figure it out until him. For this alone I go there every time now! The alternator and battery were a bit overpriced (but typical of a shop's fees in general). No matter, he got that leak figured out and the light stays off and my gas mileage/idle is much improved! Bless you! read more

These guys saved my life! My BMW crapped out on the 101 Freeway on the afternoon before the 4th of July - heavy traffic. AAA towed me to Belmont 76, and these guys were about ready to wrap up the auto repair so they could start to enjoy the holiday. At first they were thinking it would have to wait a day, but since it looked most like to be the alternator (which it was) they got the job done right away. When I started my car after running a few errands pretty much every service light in my car went on at the same time and I wasn't able to drive faster than 15 mph. I had no idea what to do and I eventually had to pull over where my car died altogether. My AAA card had just expired so I was very stressed out, but I looked across the street and saw there was a service station so I walked over and asked if they could help me out. The guy there explained that my alternator was probably shot and would need to be replaced, so he had one of his employees jump my car and I drove it over. That same day they replaced my alternator and a faulty belt for what I imagine was a fair price, and my car has been in perfect working condition ever since. I'm writing this to commend the mechanics, especially najib for being quick yet thorough for a car inspection. One of the other reviews here is from Ken C, whose written a blatantly false review claiming the mechanics were wrong, stoned, and racist. THIS COULD NOT BE FURTHER FROM THE TRUTH. najib and his team found A LOT of issues on the car and I assume that Ken C's review is a response to them explaining to me that Ken's car has too many issues. Prior to going to the mechanic I was ready to buy this car, a Lexus but after a look over from the mechanics I'm steering clear of it. Additionally these guys DO know lexus's, as they have two sitting in their parking lot that are being repaired and up for sale. I was recommended this shop from family friends and will be returning for any mechanical questions and needs in the future. HIGHLY recommend them. Stellar shop with an awesome owner. My mom has been going to Najib's shop for a while and told me to check them out to get my oil changed after a horrendous experience with Jiffy Lube a few years ago (they ruined my engine and he helped me gather all the evidence I would need to make sure I would get reimbursed by them). Even though I have a new car that receives regular warranty oil changes and tune-ups, I can still count on him and his team to give me the information I'm looking for over the phone or in person, just because they want to help. Add one to crappy overpriced service. I took my truck here to be smog checked, for which they charged me around $70. I have an older truck that is pre-computer, so as part of the check they verify the timing. I kept getting different answers about what was wrong. They wanted to charge me another $110 just to tell me what was wrong with it, before they would give me an estimate for how much it would cost to repair. I cut my losses and went to a reputable mechanic and had the problem fixed. They offer no discount on re-testing unless you have the repair work done there. I'll be going to 76 smog down the street to have my $39 smog test done. Moral of the story, check Yelp first I guess. I didn't think there was any chance my truck would fail, and I wanted someplace that was close. read more

Exploitative, overpriced crooks. My car stalled out nearby so I had AAA tow me to the nearest approved service station which was here. I normally get my car serviced at a reputable brand-specific mechanic in San Jose. Didn't do my due diligence and read the reviews before I dropped it off. So they said they'd charge a hefty diagnostics fee which was fine, but when the final bill came after the repairs were assessed, the diagnostics were on top of the rest of the labor. Additionally I was charged about 50% more than retail price for the part replaced. I shopped for quotes at my usual mechanic and other local service stations and every quote came out 200-300 dollars cheaper than what I had to pay here, and what could I do? I needed my car, they knew I was stuck, so they took me for every dime they could. I will never come here again, nobody I know will ever come here, none of my family will ever come here. They made a lot of money on this one fix but they missed out on a lifetime customer. Edit: After posting this review I got a call from the mechanic who called me an asshole. This place actually deserves a zero! Took my car to get smogged and didn't anticipated any problems. It failed and Naj told me I needed a new catalytic converter for $750, like he tells others! He said he couldn't run the numbers on the after-market muffler, although I told him it was smog legal. He said, No. I just took my car to SMOG EXPRESS and it passed with no problem. Ray is the owner and a really nice man. He took the time to call and verify the muffler was smog legal, and we were done. He only charges $50, and is certified as a test only station, as well.
