Awesome Burger - but so much more! Yes, I have driven by this place most of my life and had never been until recently (parking can be a bit tight). Big mistake - I wish I had started enjoying this food years ago. Went with a friend and this pub has to be experienced - from the dark lighting adding atmosphere, the excellent food, good service - all enhanced our meal. I had the Belmont Burger (it was $5 Burger Day too!) and it was well seasoned and delicious. My friend had the Lobster-Crab Bisque and she raved about it. They also had Meatloaf that looked well worth a return trip, the appetizers included hand breaded onion rings were all appealing. In fact, I will be going back to try more of them. What I experienced this evening at the Belmont Grill was extremely unfortunate. My friend and I met there around 6:15 pm to eat, drink and talk. Our waitress was very pleasant and funny. The food was ok; my beef kabob wasn't well done as requested and after asking for it to be recooked, it came back extremely charred (burned). Our gracious waitress took it off of my ticket and I enjoyed my potato skins. Life was good. A little after 8pm, an older male worker in the restaurant approached us and said, "Ladies, there are people waiting to be seated. Do you have anywhere else to go? Seriously! I'm trying to run a business here." My friend and I were shocked that he addressed us in such a disrespectful manner. After he noticed our silent reaction and firm facial expressions, he replied, "I'm not trying to be rude." We remained silent and he walked away. To provide context, the Belmont was at capacity and there was one couple waiting to be seated. We were the only African-Americans in the restaurant. Moments after the worker (possibly a manager or owner due to his comments) left our table, two police officers (an Asian and African-American) entered. My friend and I looked at each other, wondering if the worker called them in, but we later discovered that they came in to eat. After we paid for our meals and left, the worker's demeanor drastically changed. As he was serving the table next to us, he said aloud, "Have a good night, ladies." We did not respond. I've always been a patron of the Belmont Grill. I've sat at the bar and eaten with my husband numerous times prior without being forced out of the door. To make matters worse, I recommended this restaurant to my friend, a first time patron. Needless to say, we will not support this business anymore. read more

Two drunk 29 year old girls and one slightly tipsy 40 year old man walk into the Belmont Grill together and head for the bar. This isn't the beginning of a joke, this is just what happened last night. But we were here for the burger (and I should add it is one of the only places in Memphis open late on a Monday, so thank you, Belmont, for being open). And what. a. burger. Totally sobered me right up. OK, not really. But it was indeed delicious. And it was paired perfectly with my glass of merlot. The people watching is great there and so is the food. Bar. Check. Hole in the wall bar. Check. Good Bar Food. Check Mate! Belmont Grill is one of the most underrated eateries in Memphis. Belmont Grill has one of the finest burgers in Memphis. It also has a good spicy bowl of gumbo. The prime rib sandwich here is SO good. Toasted ravioli is a good appetizer, but so is the burger... One of these days I will have to try the Belmont Grill BBQ ribs... maybe... haven't decided yet, but it seems like I've had everything else here now. Update: I have now tried the ribs. The burgers are so great I don't know why I told myself for years I don't like this place. Inside is dark and mostly lot with Christmas lights which I kind of like. The service is excellent. I'm a sucker for good service and this place delivers - friendly, promptly, drinks never go empty and food is brought out hot and fresh. I LOVE that the burgers have side options beyond fries. The potato skins are huge! The twice baked potato is also huge but I'm personally not a huge fan of the buttermilk flavor to it. For a dive bar there's a nice wine selection, yes! Parking is a bit of a pain, the lot is super small but its worth the walk across the street should the lot be full. read more

It was our second time here & we still love the joint. We love chatting with the locals, who are laid-back & witty. A true neighborhood bar with fantastic food! The grilled fish sandwich ($8) was the best I've had in a LONG time. My husbands burgers was delicious too. Sadly the bacon wrapped livers were extremely over-cooked (we didn't finish them) & the bartender didn't feel the need to rectify. Parking onsite is in the back & wacky! (small & usually full). Was in Memphis for work when I decided to stop off at at the Belmont Grill for dinner. Located right at the intersection of Poplar and Mendenhall, Belmont Grill is a Bar/Grill that dates back to the 1930s. While finding the Belmont Grill is easy, finding parking is a real pain in the @ss. The parking lot can fit only 5 - 6 cars and you basically have to park someplace close despite the violators will be towed signs and just walk. Upon walking in, it's almost like going to an old time Pub/Saloon. Low lit place with lots of dark wood furniture and booths. Found a little table and walked in. You can tell there are a lot of regulars at the Belmont as a lot of people were friendly with each other and chatting it up. Waited about 5 minutes before the waitress spotted me and brought me a menu. The food here is your basic pub style food with a couple twists to it. We're talking appetizers of nachos, wings, and onions rings, along with items such as fried mushrooms, chicken livers, and toasted raviolis (between $3 - $8). They do offer a couple different salads and soups ($5 - $10), and their mains consist of things such as catfish, burgers, shrimp, and sandwiches ($8 - $18). Looking over the menu, decided to go with their side salad, steak sandwich, and potato skins. Watch a bit of ESPN on their TVs (they have regular tube TVs in the corners) and up came the salad. Good size portion salad with a really good blue cheese dressing. Had a nice blend of veggies in it. Then came the steak sandwich. It's basically a small NY strip served between two pieces of bread. Portion was generous on this. Most places this would be just a steak, here they turn it into a sandwich. Meat was done decently. Done to a decent medium well, the meat could have been a bit more tender, but it didn't ruin the sandwich. It was at a decent point between having to use a knife, or just eating it as a sandwich. I give them credit for the thickness of the cut. Must have been close to an inch thick. The potato skins that came with it were good. I got 4 skins with my meal and they had good flavor and taste to it. Good amount bacon and cheese added to each one of them. The waitress here was friendly, but I wouldn't say the most attentive. At the end of the meal it was about $25 including tip. As to rating, I would probably put Belmont Grill at 3.5. Good pricing, portions, and well cooked food, but waitress was indifferent and parking a pain in the @ss. For Yelp rating, the indifferent waitress and the parking is what dragging the rating down to 3 stars, but overall decent enough place to get a bite to eat and something to drink. read more

Cool, dark interior and friendly service. I had a burger and fries. I always get my burgers well done so I can't comment about anything else. The burger was tasty. My only complaint would be that it was too think to eat comfortably. But I managed. The fries were really good. They are steak fries which I usually don't like. If I could give Belmont Grill 3.5 stars, I would. I didn't realize that it had such a long history--probably one of the oldest restaurants in the area. I've passed by this place many times but didn't think to ever go in until a friend suggested we meet here for dinner. As other reviewers have mentioned, parking is pretty tight. There are only 8 or so spots in the backlot so if you're not lucky, you have to park in the nearby shopping centers. We came here on a Friday night at 6:30pm and the place was PACKED. I could tell that it was filled with a lot of regulars. The crowd was definitely on the older side. We had a 30 minute wait and sat at the bar. But the bar was so close to the tables that we didn't really have a lot of room to move. On the positive side, the fact that it was crowded enhanced the cozy and comfortable atmosphere. One bummer is that they don't have beers on draft--which is a shame in my opinion but they do have an extensive beer and wine menu. I had the Belmont burger which was cooked to "medium" perfection. Although it was juicy, it was assembled poorly. The french bread (although the perfect complement texture-wise) was a little too small for the burger so I felt very clumsy eating it. I would have preferred a regular hamburger bun. Overall, I had a good experience at Belmont and would definitely come back again. read more

Belmont is OK - it is a flashback to the seventies. Still has fried mushrooms on the menu. Burgers are good. Apparently, the daily specials are good. But today was not good. I ordered the catfish basket and it was quite possibly the worst catfish I have ever eaten. Heavy batter - and that was all you could taste, the heavy batter that soaked up some nasty flavors from the oil. The taste is still with me, over an hour later. read more

Belmont has that old pub, quaint feel, without the kooky banter. We have actually visited the East Memphis Belmont several times, and it's one of my favorite restaurants. I enjoy the food and the atmosphere so much that I thought I had already posted a review...until I tried to Check-In on Yelp and realized it was my first time. I've tried the Cheeseburger (on of my favs in Memphis), the Chicken Philly (my go-to here), the Honey Gold Hot Wings (my wife's go-to), the Potato Skins, the Bananas Foster pie (it's good, not what I expected, but good - try it) and of course, the adult beverages (of, course these are great) Overall, the taste of the food is good and really consistent, which I value. We tried this place late night because it was about the only thing open in the area. It really is kind of a hole in the wall bar type place...love the Christmas lights that are displayed year round. Tried a bacon cheese burger and I have to say it was pretty awesome. I asked for it to be cooked medium and it was right on not all dry or well done....or waitress was great super nice and checked on us the whole time. With that being said this is not a place I would go to all the time. For me it is just a late night snack place. A few bad things...The bathrooms were horrible...it is pretty bad when you have to take your shoes off in the garage when you get home just thinking of that dirty bathroom I could not walk into my house with them on. I've been here several times since moving to Memphis, and I think it's a great place to visit. It's very small and a very old building, but it has this wonderfully intimate "local" feel to it. I've been in for happy hour, evening meals, and late night cocktails, and I think Belmont does a great job no matter what you're looking for. I highly recommend their burger. I have a friend who doesn't eat meat, but she'll go here and have a burger. The drinks are a bit on the small side, but they're good and strong and so inexpensive that you won't mind. The only drawback is there's very little parking and it's at such a busy intersection that it makes it a difficult place to visit. I guess on the flip-side it's arely over-crowded. I think this is one of the places in East Memphis that everyone should try at least once. read more

Belmont is easily one of my favorite old school Memphis eateries. The establishment is very divey...but, then again, it's not. It is divey in the sense that it is very quaint (think...lots of small tables in a small space), but this lends to the ambiance and overall experience that you will have when you eat here. There are very few places you can go for a drink or for dinner, not know a single person, and yet feel like you are dining with friends. This is Belmont Grill. The bartenders, hostesses, and servers are always extremely nice and treat everyone like a local, repeat customer. Now, this does not mean you are going to get white-glove, five star service. Things can get busy at times, and the wait staff can get spread pretty thin. However, just relax, assuming the ambiance and feel of the restaurant did not already put you in this mood. The wait staff will definitely take care of you and make you feel at home -- it just might take a minute (or two) longer. The food. Let's be honest. The food here, for the most part is glorified bar food. However, it is really, REALLY good bar food. The fried cheese is awesome, unlike any you've had before. The tamales are one of my go-to favorites -- make sure you get them with chili and cheese. Sandwiches are always awesome. Go for the steak sandwich or a perennial favorite, the burger. The burger is one of the best in the City, although it doesn't get the acclaim that it should due to another burger establishment in town that always steals the limelight in this category. Truth be told, Belmont's burger is as good (or dare I say) maybe even better than this other establishment ( if you're in Memphis for more than 5 minutes looking for a burger place, you'll quickly learn of the "other" establishment of which I speak). I digress. A full bar is available. The bartenders are very proficient at pouring good drinks. (Remember, they treat everyone like a friend here). There is no draft beer. However, there are plenty of bottles to choose from. So, stop being a beer snob and order a bottled beer already. The summary. Great local establishment. Will make you feel at home, whether you are a first time customer or repeat customer. Food is always great. Don't expect gourmet. This is bar food that is kicked up a notch. Traditional "bar" appetizers with a few surprises (Toasted Ravioli, Tamales). Great sandwiches (Steak, Club, Shrimp Po'boy). Awesome burger! Very old school type atmosphere. I would describe it as dark and dingey (but purposefully dingey). My roommates were excited about coming (we decided on Huey's and they last minute decided to go to Belmont when we drove past) and I was not about it. Although I conceded anyway. I ordered the special which was the prime rib sandwich and a stuffed baked potato. The sandwich was average, but I want to talk about is the baked potato. It looked fine on my plate but once I dug in and had a few bites, I realized it tasted funny in a very sour way. It seemed like the sour cream that was already in there had sat out for too long or expired because it was a very sour taste. I had an upset stomach right before we left and continued to all night. Needles to say, I will never be back. I'm just bitter I could've spent half of what I paid at Huey's for a great meal and no upset stomach. read more

The only complaint I have with Belmont is its total lack of parking, and once you do find a spot it's damn near impossible to get back out onto Mendenhall. This is a classic Memphis bar with traditional bar food, but it's good for what it is. I am not sure about them having the best burger in town, but it's near the top of the list for sure. It's pretty much a hole-in-the-wall, but well, like other dives in the area, it's just part of the experience. Dive bar in Memphis, I was skeptical. We went there for lunch, but I have to say, wonderful service and food. We were not too hungry so we ordered the cheese logs. They were extra cheesy, hot and came with two dipping sauces and plenty to share for 2. Next, we split a burger and they took the extra trouble to cut it in half and put it on two plates. They even split our sides and condiments. I love it when the kitchen goes the extra mile to do this even when you don't ask for it. The burger was cooked medium, perfect and exactly what we asked for. It was also juicy and hit the spot. We would return to this Memphis local spot agin. PS: my only complaint would be the TV. I had an intuitive impulse to go here tonight and I'm glad I listened to it! On the way, my mom was telling me about family members that have sworn by the Belmont Grill throughout their years. I love going to old places with my mom since she usually associates them with a different time, and I get to hear some cool family and Memphis history. The Belmont Grill was a great choice for this! We were greeted and seated promptly and nicely. I got a pretty basic burger -- just swiss, onion, and lettuce, with fries on the side. My mom got a French Dip with onion rings. We were sadly too late to catch any of the prime rib that so many people have recommended to me! But I guarantee we'll be back. My burger was cooked perfectly. My mom was raving about her sandwich, too. On top of it, our server, Amanda, had great energy and was very friendly and timely with everything. Her awesome service tied everything together for us. Between the service, the food, and the atmosphere, my first time to this historic restaurant was truly memorable and I'm looking forward to returning. read more

Great burger, friendly service. Love the char on the burger; one of the best burgers we've had in the state. Love this place.

The staff was friendly. We had a bacon cheeseburger which was VERY good. We also had a tamale appetizer which was probably the worst tamale we've ever had. The maza was like peanut butter and stuck to the roof of your mouth. The chili and cheese on top of the tamale were excellent though. Another review mentioned smoke and we were there at 9 on a Sat and there was no smoke to be found so that may be hit or miss. read more

Belmont does have a great burger - but if you have not tried their butterflied fried shrimp you are missing the best fried shrimp ever! I know it doesn't make sense that a dive bar in memphis tn has great fried shrimp but they are REALLY awesome! I will have to say they are better than most I've had at seafood places along the gulf coast. Also to an earlier comment about the ambience - I think the fact that its so old, dark and yes they have christmas lights up all year adds up to something that makes this a unique and interesting local hangout instead of feeling like Im at an apple bees or fridays - I like it and think it would be a terrible mistake to change. read more

Located in a small house that used to be a grocery store, the Belmont has been around before the city of Memphis made it this far east. A full service bar and restaurant, the Belmont serves some of the best burgers in the city along with nachos that you can make a meal of, fried mushrooms and potato skins. The place isn't overly lit and gets crowded around lunch and predictably around dinner. Open for lunch and notoriously late. When DO they turn off that 'Kitchen Open' sign? read more

I had the lobster bisque and a po boy or similar sandwich and it was pretty tasty. I think the bowl is a little overpriced for the bisque but I can't complain because it was really good. The atmosphere is really relaxed yet inviting. This is a good spot to come with your friends for a beer and a moderate dinner. My only complain is the parking. It's horrible and the restaurant being on the corner of poplar makes matters worse. read more
