I had a sample platter from Belmont Vegetarian. In all seriousness, I didn't know vegan food TASTED LIKE THIS! When I think of vegan food I think no flavor and food tasting like dirt, but this was not the case. The food is so good that I am now considering going vegan! The combinations of spices and flavors is like having a party in my mouth and the way they prepare their tofu will have you thinking that you are eating meat. You have to try it! PS. Really unique hole in the wall vegan joint with good flavors. Stopped in on the way to CT and rocked a large bowl with pepper "steak", mac n' cheese and collards with brown rice. Everything was good, especially the steak. The mac n' cheese had a bit of a sweeter taste (which I would assume is coconut) and the collards were on point. A large is big enough for 2 people, so at $15, it's a good deal (you can fill it with anything and evwrything on the menu). Will likely make the trip to try some of the other options. Where do I even begin?! OK, for starters, if you are not from the Worcester area, you might be inclined to just keep on driving right by. Upon entering, it is set up like a fast food establishment, with plexi glass separating you from the back of the house. As this being my first time there, it was all a bit confusing. There is a chalkboard hand-written menu on the right wall as you walk in. And there was music playing a little too loud for me to ask questions. So, I of course took to the reviews to see what I should get, and majority states, get EVERYTHING. You choose from a small or large round tin (think salad bar type container), then tell them you want everything. Trust me, do this, get it all, don't think twice about it, just do it! Then run to your car, rip it open and start devouring. OK, OK, try to get home first, but I was on a road trip and starving so I dug right in. Visited here for the first time on a Saturday afternoon. This spot is cozy so we decided to order our food to go. The guy at the window was super friendly and offered to go through the choices with us. We opted to get a large of everything for each one of us. The serving was enough for two meals and the food was delicious! Neither my boyfriend or I are vegan or vegetarian, but you wouldnt miss eating any meat products at all. The portions are great, the food is seasoned very well. They have a variety of options and every single one of them are fantastic! The mac and cheese was a great standout and probably my favorite. I love that everything is vegan it makes my heart happy! The people here are very good at what they do and should consider expanding to other locations. The Mac and cheese is the best vegan Mac I have had other than my own. The bbq was absolutely delicious. The collard greens were flavorful. The vegan chicken patty was a great little addition to my lunch date. All I have to say is if you're vegan and love food you have to stop here! So so so worth it. VEGETARIAN SKEPTIC TURNED NEAR CONVERT. This guy (store owner) is amazing. I dropped in for lunch during moving day to "the woo" with a friend and he was the warmest conceivable welcome I could have imagined getting from a Worcester lunch-time. He's so jovial and has this trusting, positive spirit... the smiles are contagious. There were a few menu options available that day and being a vegetarian novice, it was hard for me to make a decision. He sensed my indecision and didn't hesitate to whip me up a sample plate of all the options! My problem quickly went from indecision to unabashed gluttony. I wanted it all. Awesome vegan restaurant!! FYI the owner is from the islands in the Caribbean where "Vegetarian" means no animal products, so there is no dairy, cheese, eggs, etc. here. This place had insanely high reviews and lots of them. So we set the GPS. On first glance this is a teensy tiny corner place on a side street in a sketchy lookin neighborhood near UMass Memorial. It only has seating for 11 (two tables of four and three counter seats). Steve is the owner... and the chef, and the waiter, and the bus boy, and the dishwasher ... and basically does it all. That is probably the MOST amazing part about this place, because he does it all SO well! But, in the end it's all about the food and the food was AWESOME! You don't need to be vegan to appreciate this cooking, but you might need to like Indian-style island food & southern-style cooking. Curries, collards, barbeque, rice & beans, etc. All is incredibly flavorful, delicious and wholesome! When we arrived with five adults and six children, hungry from a couple hours on the road, Steve was a bit taken aback by us. We asked if he had much food left to which he gave a nervous laugh and said he'd have to check. Seeing that there were 11 seats and 11 of us, we figured it was meant to be! There are two sized containers ($13.75 Lg and $11.25 Md - I think) that he sells and all the different menu items are written on a chalk board on the wall. You tell him all the items you want and he fits it into you chosen container. Steve is behind the window where you order and beyond him you can see the kitchen where all the magic happens. What Steve suggested is that he prepare a large container with a little taste of all the menu items for us to try and then we could order exactly what we wanted. He also makes homemade smoothies to which he adds banana, hemp seeds, kale, pear, mango, and other delicious and nutritious items. Did I mention that Steve is great? He is. After trying vegan soul food in Oakland, CA last year I was super excited to here about an all vegan soul food joint in Worcester. Belmont Vegetarian, which opened back in December 2008, is a small hole-in-the-wall joint that has limited seating, only two booths. Its best for a take-out lunch or dinner. Counter staff was very nice and helpful if you're a newbie and can't decide what to get. Their menu changes and portions are in three sizes, Small, Medium or Large tin container. The medium plates last me a couple of meals! The vegan mac and "cheese" was great but I recommend the Sweet and Sour Soy or BBQ Soy! Each dish is mixed with a variety of veggies in a great sauce and comes with a side of rice. The only thing they need to serve with the meals is a side of vegan corn bread but try the Jamaican Sweet Dough or Patties YUMMERS! read more

I stopped in here while in town for Boston Marathon weekend. I was drawn to it because of the 5 star rating and the diversity and flexibility of it! It's located on a hilly street with a very visible and easy access location! I found street parking readily enough on a weekend. I ordered the large combo because, I do like to try everything as far as food goes! While it is s takeout place they have two booths inside which give you the opportunity to sit down and eat (which I did) It was pretty good, lots of food and frankly very dense considering the amount of good you get! The internet brought me here and I'm elated that it did. The food looked great but it tasted even better. I called in 15 minutes ahead and said I wanted "a large plate of everything." When I arrived I was greeted by Steve, who is friendly and radiant. He asked if I was vegan and I told him no (because I eat fish) lol. The sampler came with rice and beans (MMM!), collard greens (YASSS), vegan mac 'n cheese, beans mixed with coconut milk (I'm guessing? YUM), tofu mixed with jerk sauce (SAVORY!), and a few other things I can't mention because that's how blessed my plate was, I just had so many options. Honestly, I never appreciated what tofu could be until I came to this spot. He just really has a way of preparing the food, you know? I bought a large and was able to share with several co-workers. You definitely get all your money's worth and then some. After trying everything they have to offer, I'm still amazed that this place is vegan. The bbq "chicken," mac & "cheese," and all the other "meats" tasted so real! My favorite was probably the above two and the (I think) chicken tikka masala. I shared a large plate and two of the pancakes with a friend and even that was too much for both of us. Both the pancakes were good, but we liked the lentil one more than the pumpkin one. Other customers there recommended the "beef" over the "chicken" one.
