I was in Worcester for my daughter's dance competition and was looking to grab some takeout on the way home. Let me tell you, this place is worth stopping by if you are in the area! Lots of great choices and the flavors are amazing. I ordered the large plate, had the curry and barbecue, both of which were very tasty and had great texture. I really enjoyed the collard greens, which I usually can't eat because everyone makes them with meat. Chickpeas and okra were also fantastic. We went here after finding out that Chickpea was closed and we wanted to try another local vegan restaurant and other Yelpers spoke highly of this place. It was GREAT! What a fantastic selection and taste of the foods! The menu was a little confusing as I had wanted to order in advance but it is more of a "buffet" style where everything is cooked and you just ask for what you want when you arrive depending on the menu options, which are on the board when you enter. I totally underestimated this place. At first I was extremely skeptical and thought maybe it was too good to be true but NOPE. This restaurant literally blew my mind, the food here is absolutely delicious! You honestly can't even tell the difference if it was vegan or not. I ended up getting pepper steak, bbq, mac & cheese, and rice. Mouth-watering! Highly recommend! The place is really small but no big deal. Honestly one of the best dining experiences of my life. Drove an hour to eat here for hubby's birthday(yes, we are weird). The super friendly, warm, and kind guy at the counter found out it was our first time here and immediately made up a sample plate of everything on the menu for us to try... so thoughtful and helpful! Another simple but MUCH appreciated option? The offer to combine any dishes together in one tin, like a custom combination plate! That makes me SO happy, and we both got 3 items. I got the sweet & sour, brown rice, and collards. All were just wonderful, even the rice was perfect. I don't really think the sweet & sour was sweet & sour(I wouldn't have ordered it since I don't like that, usually-once I tasted that sample, I was sold)but it had a great flavor and texture. I haven't eaten meat in 21 years, so can't vouch for its realism as a meat substitute, but my husband's BBQ was pronounced realistically meaty. He was extremely happy with his, too. I couldn't finish my 'small' and brought the remainder home. The kind man did something extremely generous and sweet for my husband's birthday, even though we tried to decline. The only thing that isn't '5 star' is the atmosphere, but it was adequate and clean. We had no problem eating in the little area and were just struck by the over and above service and YUMMY food. We'll definitely be back.... I loved three quarters of the samples I tried, and that's just what was offered today. read more

This some seriously awesome fake meat, folks: the barbecue tastes like real, authentic barbecue; the pepper steak is some of the best I've had, and their mac-n-cheese is miles better than anything you'll get out of a box. If you served this food to any omnivore, I guarantee you they would be shocked that it was completely vegan. The rotating menu is small, but everything on it is excellent. Downtown Worcester does not plow their streets very well and when I arrived to get some food there was no parking anywhere. Seeing on Yelp that they had catering and delivery I called to see if maybe they would help me out. My first visit to Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant was on foot, in the middle of the Blizzard of 2015 and I must say, I'd do it all over again. It can be easy to miss, with its inconspicuous façade on the corner by UMass Memorial. Alas, I trudged onward through the dark and the 5-foot snow banks towards its glowing sign. The place is small and no-frills, akin to the old break room I had when I worked retail, only 5 times smaller. But... aesthetics are of little concern to me when the food is this good. One glance at the menu, written on a chalkboard and accompanied by drawings of dancing vegetables, was all it took for me to forget that my feet were numb. I was star-struck by the array of tantalizing options. The guy behind the counter suggested I try some of each, while patiently listening to me chatter about the monster truck rally I was headed to that evening. You could have fooled me that the "steak" is not real meat, except that it was a hundred times more delicious and flavorful. The mac and cheese is a must-have, and it's vegan so it's good for you... right? The vegetable curry was nothing short of spectacular. Same for the collard greens. Mind you, this is the only instance in which I have ever used "collard greens" and "spectacular" in the same sentence. I'm no vegetarian, but I have, at long last, made an honest attempt to eat more healthily. It's nice knowing that the lovely city of Worcester has a healthier option in its legion of culinary destinations. Good, but overrated. This place makes good vegan food, but there is nothing exceptional about it. To be honest, the price is the main reason I think 4 stars is appropriate. 9-11$ for a plate of relatively low-cost ingredients, served in a tin, in a "restaurant", which is more of a take out place. The food tastes good, don't get me wrong, but 5 stars I think is pushing it a bit. If the prices were 2$ lower across the board I think this place would easily deserve a full 5 stars. ...also its in a rougher neighborhood, just over the hill on route 9, heading towards UMass Memorial. read more

Another great meal...I think one word best describes this hidden gem...ADDICTIVE. Whenever I'm in Worcester this is a must stop for lunch. I've even brought meals home to my family and they loved it. I have only eaten a few vegan meals so I am not a vegan expert. However, I do eat restaurant food for 75% of my meals so I do have a lot to compare Belmont Vegetarian to. That said, it's not a question of whether you think you are eating meat or not. Its all about the flavors and textures and here they are spot on! I had a combination of BBQ and Pepper Steak over a bed of rice and everything was truly delicious. I only gave 4 stars because I didn't like the fact that I could smell incense being burned while eating...and I don't like that in my favorite Thai restaurants either...but that's easily fixed by just getting your food to go. Friendly and relaxed in atmosphere, surprising and unbeatable on taste, Belmont Veg gets behind its staunch vegetarian philosophy in a very non-confrontational way. Three sizes, with an, upon first viewing, a mish mash of veggies in a tin. Upon closer examination with thy mouth: they have been chefed up something proper. Spicys, sweet and sours, hots and colds and much more. The Stew is one of my personal favorites. I like to eat my vittles, even more so now. Five stars. read more
