I was given a muscle relaxer and prednisone and told the MRI department would call me to schedule an MRI--$460 with insurance--and then I was sent home. That night, my pain became unbearable. I suffered severe muscle spasms, got no sleep, and was in so much pain that I cried repeatedly. When I called Ortho SC first thing the next morning to explain what was happening, I was told they could not help me and that I should go to the emergency room. When I asked about the MRI, I was brushed off and told someone would contact me. I had to push to be transferred to the MRI department myself. There, I was told the next available appointment was December 22--nearly two weeks later. I was informed that there were 66 patients ahead of me and that my pain did not warrant any urgency. Being told to live with this level of pain for weeks was not only unacceptable, it was inhumane. When a complaint management representative finally called me back, her response was simply, "If you're in that much pain, go to the ER." This was after Ortho SC had already taken my insurance, performed incomplete imaging, and sent me home with no answers and no plan. I have never felt so dismissed, abandoned, or powerless by a medical provider. Out of desperation, I found a spine specialist on my own and was seen the same day. They immediately took proper X-rays, including a front view that Ortho SC never bothered to do. The doctor showed me that my spine was shifting to the right and that I had two compressed discs at the bottom of my spine--conditions Ortho SC completely missed. I received injections that actually helped my pain and was given a clear, competent treatment plan. This experience highlights everything wrong with large, corporate-style healthcare practices. At Ortho SC, patients are treated as numbers, not human beings in pain. I will never return to Ortho SC, and I will actively warn others to avoid!

She was loud, made the entire waiting room hear our business, it was such a bad experience that we needed to speak to office manager. Both me and my husband have used this office with no trouble before but due to Shelly's attitude being tolerated by the office we will not be back.

To anyone that is considering going to Carolina Sports Medicine for medical treatment, or…read moreresearching for Orthopaedic surgeons, please read this. I feel that I have a obligation, and the public deserves to know the true integrity of these Dr's morals and beliefs. In June of 2019 I ended up falling down some steps and seriously injuring my knee. I went to the E.R. and was referred to Carolina Sports Medicine. I asked for a MRI because I have a bone disease that causes my bones to be brittle, and just by the way it was feeling, I knew I had done some serious damage to it. I was just getting over a previous surgery I had on my foot. The bone didn't heal like it was supposed to, so not only was I dealing with that, now I have the knee injury. I finally get my MRI, and the results show I have a fractured tibia and a complete tear of my ACL, MCL, and meniscus. I have to have surgery to repair it. In the meantime I am getting passed around to different Dr.s throughout the practice, because they are unable to do my case. So after 2 1/2 months I finally get a appointment with Dr. Messina. My mom has been to him, and liked him, and his P.A. Shawn Fitzgerald has daughters who have gone to elementary school with my son. So I was familiar with him. I show up for my appointment, and Shawn walks in. I was expecting to see Dr. Messina, but he went on vacation last minute, so I saw Shawn instead. I was upset, because once again I had to wait until I saw the Dr. to schedule it. When Shawn walks in he asks me how I've been, and I tell him there has been no improvement, and I'm ready to schedule the surgery. He looks at me and tells me I was going to be fine, and I shouldn't be asking him for surgery. I was so upset because I'd been dealing with so much pain and been passed on from Dr. to Dr. and now he's telling me I am ok? He continues to disregard me, and throws a full temper tantrum and stands up and sits back down and throws a pen at his computer. He condescending says to me "well let's schedule your surgery since you want it so bad". My husband asks him if he has read the results from my MRI on my chart? He never once reviewed my chart before he came in for my appointment. He half heartily apologizes, and completely disregards losing his temper with me, and making me out as a liar. He surprisingly doesn't remember my son, or my husband, which were at his house for his daughters birthday. I asked him if I were to be a athlete, I would have already had the surgery, and his response was yes.... He has become complacent, and feels like his decision shouldn't be questioned. Whenever my husband asked him why he didn't look in my chart, the nurse was real quick to tell my husband he needed to calm down and refrain from any feedback. The next day I was scheduled to see Dr. Shawn Messina. I had took notes from the previous day, and I wanted to discuss with him how unprofessional Shawn had treated me. I am waiting to be seen in the room, and Dr. Messina walks in and literally says to me, I heard you were disrespectful to my staff? Apparently I wasn't supposed to question anyone about the incident, and I was to accept the fact that Shawn made decisions based on his personal opinion, and not by looking at actual facts that have been proven to be true beyond all reasonable doubt determined by medical testing. I want people to see the real Dr. Messina that discriminates against patients ability to receive treatment because they are not athletes, or refusing to believe your patients when they tell you your P.A. is being negligent to their well being, and immediately you are willing to cut the relationship between patient and doctor, because it is more important to cover up for your colleague, than it is to protect your patients. I ended up going to Duke for my surgery, and it turned out great! She's been practicing for 28 years, and said she hasn't seen a injury like that in years. She also told me with your medical training, you were able to see just how bad the tear was, and couldn't believe you didn't do anything to help me. It says volumes about your character. You weren't confident enough as a doctor to attempt it, and I was liability risk to you. You thought I wouldn't end up healing. You couldn't fix me, and you were to proud to admit it, if you were a good doctor, you would have acknowledged that it was beyond your abilities, and you would find a mutual fellow that shared your medical abilities to help the patient get the treatment they needed. But instead you waited 2 1/2 months to tell me it was my fault because I didn't let your colleague allow him to treat me bad. You don't deserve to be able to take care of people... Maybe one day your family member will meet someone like you, and you will be able to know the feeling of someone you love not getting the proper care they deserve...
