Sitting at the bar, I couldn't help but imagine the hardworking railroad crews resting their weary heads here long ago, alongside the glamorous, lively parties that once filled the space. Knowing it's recognized as part of the Occidental Historic District only adds to the magic. Very worth a stop to wet your whistle at the historic Union Hotel Saloon. The sweet bartender even gave us a complimentary tour of the public areas.

Room: Beach Primrose, 3rd floor. (I wish more people…read moreidentified their room.) I stayed here last year for a long weekend. I love this hotel, but it's not without its quirks. I gave it as many as four stars because everything was clean and I love the character, including the marginally-dilapidated atmosphere, the ancient "lift" (can't really call it an elevator). If you want a slick, polished experience, choose a different lodging. Maybe the "Inn at Benicia Bay" down the street; I had breakfast there one morning and it looked very posh. But if you want a piece of history, I am passionate about the Union Hotel. Things to note before you take it on: The management is notoriously hard to get in touch with before your stay. While you're here, there's someone at the desk during the day within limited hours. But don't expect any contact or action at night. Don't expect calls back. Their late-check-in process was a little nebulous in terms of explanation before the fact, but worked out really well. I came up with adult children and needed an extra bed, but never got any closure on my requests. Not to worry, there were a couple of rollaways in the corner of the hallway with the housekeeping materials so everything worked out well. We tried the jacuzzi tub, and although it started up OK, we immediately regretted it because it sounded like you were right next to a 747 taking off. Then we discovered it wouldn't shut off! I called the after-hours number but didn't get a response. Finally we found a GFI outlet opposite the sink and if we tripped it with the Test button, it shut off the Jacuzzi! That was the only real problem we had. The room was nice and roomy, and even though it was one of cheapest rooms, it had a nice couch and coffee table for meals and activities. Great view from the 3rd floor overlooking the side street and the bay over to the side. The bed is so plush in the Beach Primrose (as of 2025), they have a little stepstool at the foot for you to climb up. If you're marginally athletic you can hop up on it from the side. All in all, very comfy. The town is great. Lots of good food, including the bar/restaurant on the ground floor. Doordash and Ubers available in town, too. Very restful weekend. Read the history on a section of their web site and other accounts of Benicia and Vallejo. Amazing stories, including the fact that it was the site of the State Capitol for a year or so. Lots of ghosts in this town, including in this hotel. You can feel her in the walls and halls. I'm coming back soon to get to know it more.

Our server was doing her best on her own for the entire establishment and we respected her situation. The Gabby's Jolt was merely strong and seemed to be missing ingredients listed on the menu. We had ordered the stuffed mushrooms appetizer which was tasty, the filet mignon entree and halibut entree ( of which we told the server we'd like to have a glass of white wine to accompany it but had to wait until the entree was nearly cold to receive it). We ate two servings of bread an do bitter while we waited for the entrees. The filet was tender and seasoned well in addition to being cooked a bit over medium, had a large portion of spinach and mashed potatoes, and came with the same red wine reduction sauce as the mushrooms which we found a bit odd. The minutely seasoned halibut has to have been the tiniest piece of fish we've ever seen served and only had six small potato quarters and like 6-7 stalks of asparagus with it. Overall, we ate everything because of the small halibut entree, but will most likely not return. I suggest the owners have more than one server on a Friday night, For everyone's sake.

They have a buzzer/door bell you ring. I rang it over 3 times while the staff stared at me and my 10 year old through the window. I don't think myself and a 10 year old look very threatening but maybe we do. I get inside, get out my ID and credit card. They find my reservation and tell me the deposit is $116.18. Kind of a weird amount but it is late, I have been traveling on a plane, in a car and am coming up on 19 hours awake so I don't care I tap my card, get the keys and leave. Check in took way longer as the employee was telling me "it didn't go through." It looked like it went through on my end but we got a room so I didn't care. Got to the room and basically crawled into bed. Woke up at 7:30 and decided to go down to breakfast. They had 2 waffle machines (one that makes a big waffle and another that makes 4 small waffles) they had 2 different kinds of batter (one was the regular kind and the other was banana bread) they had cheese omelettes, some kind of sausage, potatoes, scones, muffins, bagels, hard boiled, eggs, yogurt, fruit (bananas and apples) and cereal. Several juices, hot water for tea, hot cocoa and coffee. The omelette was meh. The potatoes were meh. Overall it was included with our stay so I was happy. Went upstairs to shower and get ready for checkout. The room was clean and we were able to shower, pack up and get ready to leave. Introduced my kid to old school Scooby doo episodes while we waited to check out. Headed downstairs to check out and asked if they store luggage since we were going to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom and I had an SUV with no cover and worried about the car being broken into. They store luggage, tagged it, gave us claim tickets and we were on our way. Came by after SFDK and picked up our luggage, it was quick and easy. I got home, checked my credit card so the charge as pending and knew it would drop off as we had been in our room all of 9 hours not enough time to do damage. Few days later charge goes through. I called the hotel. No answer. Called the Hilton 1-800 line and they were able to reach hotel. They charged me for the room "accidentally." I spent 15 minutes calling and being on hold to get the issue resolved so I docked half a star. We had a room that faced the road and due to this it was very hard to sleep as there was lots of car noise. We used a white noise machine and ear plugs which muffled it. Within our room it was the fridge I believe that keep cycling and making a loud metal clanging noise which could be heard with the noise machine and ear plugs. I woke up 6 hours after arrival not because I felt rested and ready to start the day but because I could not sleep due to all the noise in the room. I appreciated that I could adjust the room temperature and keep it nice and cool. Overall a good stay for my purpose. They had a pool we would have loved to use but it didn't pan out with our schedule. I would stay here in the future but request a room not facing the road. Another odd thing about the room is when we got in, in the wee hours of the morning the traffic noise was really loud. I walked over to the window and it was slightly ajar. I closed it and locked it (was on the 3rd floor) but I was shocked you could open the window. I feel like other hotels I have stayed at the window does not open. Just something to keep in mind if you stay here particularly on lower floors.

They comped the meal, and we didn't ask for it; we only wanted to split the check, which was a policy that was never discussed, but their system could do it. So they decided to comp the check, given the many issues. Then the manager calls me after we leave, leaves a message, and says, very passively aggressive, "We comped your meal, but you did not leave the server a tip." Servers live off tips. But don't worry, we took care of her tip. Have a good day." Umm, excuse me? I was a server for over 7 years. First of all, I wouldn't expect a tip after the establishment that failed me by not ensuring they had adequate kitchen supplies to keep a Mother's Day up and running. Additionally, I would have added more staff to the day, which would of course be very busy. And lastly, how are we tipped when you comped the bill and walked away, and nobody had cash? We did not ask for the bill to be comped. So for future reference, dear John I don't recommend calling your customers and bullying them over voicemail. You're the problem, not us.

As my wife puts some clothes on pleading to leave this place, I make my way to the office where I find it impossible to get a hold of anyone. I'm ringing the bell, dinging the door, yelling "HELLO?!" .... NOTHING. Literally TEN minutes of this with NO help. I had to track down the housekeeper and show her a picture and ask her "is this normal here?!" Catherine the housekeeper came to our rescue but had to spray bug spray all over the bathroom to catch the bug, which is when the desk clerk who was "NOT a manager" finally came out of the office . When i mentioned a direct refund, he quickly offered to switch rooms, but retracted the offer once Catherine came out with the shower curtain wrapped up with the bug in it. "So you guys are good then right?" The desk clerk insisted. "No. I'm not. I would like a refund" I said. He quickly dismissed my request with a timid unfulfilled promise of an disclosed "substantial" discount for our troubles. My wife did NOT feel comfortable enough to use the bathroom for the remainder of the visit, and quite frankly neither was I. Also the desk clerk promised us once the room was clean post check out, our $100 deposit would be swiftly refunded into my account which has not happened yet either. Thankfully, my wise and beautiful wife intervened and strongly suggested that we book a room at the Courtyard Vallejo Napa Valley (there was a discounted rate available for members of the wedding party). Since there was some construction taking place by the hotel, Google Maps misled us (the entrance of the hotel's parking lot is on the side of the hotel that faces the nearby Chevron). Entering the hotel, we were checked in by an employee who acknowledged me with a head nod. Generally I find this to be unprofessional, but I gathered that he was a little flustered by a difficult customer that he was assisting prior to us. After providing us with room keys, he gave me a parking pass to put on my dashboard (parking is $10). We entered a very clean room that had both a refrigerator and microwave (very beneficial considering that my wife and I brought our breakfast meal prep for the next morning), along with a nice view of the neighboring Six Flags amusement park. Speaking of the amusement park...the room was well-insulated; therefore, we could not hear the screaming of the patrons on the roller coaster that faced our room. I'm so glad that I took heed to my wife's advice, we experienced a comfortable and safe stay at the Courtyard Vallejo Napa Valley!
