My friends and relatives who've stayed there have really liked both the Inn itself and the associated Cafe at the Inn, which provides your choice of scrumptious breakfasts from a creative menu, ranging from locally sourced bacon and eggs to basics like pastries and avocado toast to more creative fare (again, locally sourced as much as possible). They've found it a beautiful, relaxing, reasonably priced place to simply hang out in the morning, with those delicious breakfasts (included in the rates) and in-room coffee adding extra value. Its location a half-block off of First Street, Benicia's main drag with lots of shops, galleries, restaurants, a couple of musical venues and a bit of history (including California's capital building from the mid-19th century, with guided tours on certain days), etc., offers a good base to take walks or runs around town and along the nearby waterfront. Big kudos to owners/hosts Tracee and Dennis, to Chef Kyle and to the rest of the staff. In addition to very pleasant, nicely decorated, comfortable rooms, the Inn also features two pretty, partly shaded garden areas: one just for the Inn's guests, the other for the Cafe. (The Cafe also has indoor dining areas for those who prefer that.)

Room: Beach Primrose, 3rd floor. (I wish more people…read moreidentified their room.) I stayed here last year for a long weekend. I love this hotel, but it's not without its quirks. I gave it as many as four stars because everything was clean and I love the character, including the marginally-dilapidated atmosphere, the ancient "lift" (can't really call it an elevator). If you want a slick, polished experience, choose a different lodging. Maybe the "Inn at Benicia Bay" down the street; I had breakfast there one morning and it looked very posh. But if you want a piece of history, I am passionate about the Union Hotel. Things to note before you take it on: The management is notoriously hard to get in touch with before your stay. While you're here, there's someone at the desk during the day within limited hours. But don't expect any contact or action at night. Don't expect calls back. Their late-check-in process was a little nebulous in terms of explanation before the fact, but worked out really well. I came up with adult children and needed an extra bed, but never got any closure on my requests. Not to worry, there were a couple of rollaways in the corner of the hallway with the housekeeping materials so everything worked out well. We tried the jacuzzi tub, and although it started up OK, we immediately regretted it because it sounded like you were right next to a 747 taking off. Then we discovered it wouldn't shut off! I called the after-hours number but didn't get a response. Finally we found a GFI outlet opposite the sink and if we tripped it with the Test button, it shut off the Jacuzzi! That was the only real problem we had. The room was nice and roomy, and even though it was one of cheapest rooms, it had a nice couch and coffee table for meals and activities. Great view from the 3rd floor overlooking the side street and the bay over to the side. The bed is so plush in the Beach Primrose (as of 2025), they have a little stepstool at the foot for you to climb up. If you're marginally athletic you can hop up on it from the side. All in all, very comfy. The town is great. Lots of good food, including the bar/restaurant on the ground floor. Doordash and Ubers available in town, too. Very restful weekend. Read the history on a section of their web site and other accounts of Benicia and Vallejo. Amazing stories, including the fact that it was the site of the State Capitol for a year or so. Lots of ghosts in this town, including in this hotel. You can feel her in the walls and halls. I'm coming back soon to get to know it more.

Checking in was easy and the front desk staff was very friendly! We were arriving late night on Friday so I had called that day for them to leave a note on my reservation. We noticed their small store next to the front desk with food, drink, and personal care items available and thought the selection was well done (I didn't buy anything from it so cannot comment on the prices). The room was clean and tucked in the back by the parking lot. We were actually able to see both the theme park coasters and our car from our room. Score! Unfortunately, this is where they lose points for me. The options of what to watch on the TV were meh with bad channels and half of them losing signal. The Wifi was spotty and slow, but useable. The bed was soooo hard that I tossed and turned both nights and ended up with a sore back and neck. The other members of my party did too, one of which was sleeping on the sofa bed and commented it wasn't so comfortable either. This is obviously a personal preference, but it is a big deal for someone about to go enjoy the day at a theme park! The walls are thin, being able to hear people pretty clearly in their rooms as you walk through the halls ( *.* ) and when in your room, but we didn't have actual issues that stemmed from this. We ate from their breakfast spread both days we were there. They offered several juices, coffee, premade omelets, sausage rounds, potatoes, muffins, scones, bagels, toast, oatmeal, cereal with regular and almond milk, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and two waffle machines with vanilla or red velvet batter. The food was meh lacking in flavor, but it also wasn't the worst we have had so we were happy it was included in the price to stay. On a side note, Dutch Bros is a literal 1 minute walk from the entrance of the hotel! Blessedly they had a shuttle that ran all day from Six Flags to the hotel which saved us $50 in parking. We had to call when we were ready to be picked up and they were there within just a few minutes. We decided to swim and enjoy the hot tub after our day at the park. It was fairly full of people and one of the cabana mattress covers was ripped up making it unusable, but the experience was fine. There were towels available by the door and the outside pool was heated, but still cool enough for enjoyment. The hot tub helped our sore muscles, but the jets aren't really usable on your body as they are way too strong. Ultimately, if the beds were softer and the breakfast a little better we would have no hesitation returning next time we wanted to go to Six Flags. We may try another hotel next time since those are important, but we wouldn't say no to staying here again. Thanks for the friendly service and clean hotel!

The server told us they operate out of a food truck. So the menu is limited. But what they make is really good! The actual menu in-person had a couple items that aren't on the sample menu including a couple more dessert options like fig ice cream. We really liked everything we tried! The portions were pretty good. If coming here for food I'd recommend getting here early since food trucks have limited capacity. You're welcome to stroll around the property both the flower farm and the inn side before or after your meal. The parking situation is a gravel lot. So it may not be the most handicap accessible place. We had a lot of fun stopping by Park Winters. They were setting up for a wedding so the inn side would have been closed for the event starting at 1pm. The check also came with a small map of the property for you to keep. This was very helpful in exploring the property. The only caveat is this is the countryside. Wear long pants or be prepared with insect repellent! Even at 10am in the summer my legs were bitten by mosquitoes. (Type O blood. Mosquito magnet here.) I'd like if they burned some citronella candles to help with mosquitoes. The rest of the dining venue was so thoughtfully designed including timed misters (like at theme parks) to help keep the area cool. Definitely check it out if you're curious or in the area.

I go in the bathroom to investigate, and find a cockroach as big as my hand just wiggling around on the shower curtain. As my wife puts some clothes on pleading to leave this place, I make my way to the office where I find it impossible to get a hold of anyone. I'm ringing the bell, dinging the door, yelling "HELLO?!" .... NOTHING. Literally TEN minutes of this with NO help. I had to track down the housekeeper and show her a picture and ask her "is this normal here?!" Catherine the housekeeper came to our rescue but had to spray bug spray all over the bathroom to catch the bug, which is when the desk clerk who was "NOT a manager" finally came out of the office . When i mentioned a direct refund, he quickly offered to switch rooms, but retracted the offer once Catherine came out with the shower curtain wrapped up with the bug in it. "So you guys are good then right?" The desk clerk insisted. "No. I'm not. I would like a refund" I said. He quickly dismissed my request with a timid unfulfilled promise of an disclosed "substantial" discount for our troubles. My wife did NOT feel comfortable enough to use the bathroom for the remainder of the visit, and quite frankly neither was I. Also the desk clerk promised us once the room was clean post check out, our $100 deposit would be swiftly refunded into my account which has not happened yet either. Thankfully, my wise and beautiful wife intervened and strongly suggested that we book a room at the Courtyard Vallejo Napa Valley (there was a discounted rate available for members of the wedding party). Since there was some construction taking place by the hotel, Google Maps misled us (the entrance of the hotel's parking lot is on the side of the hotel that faces the nearby Chevron). Entering the hotel, we were checked in by an employee who acknowledged me with a head nod. Generally I find this to be unprofessional, but I gathered that he was a little flustered by a difficult customer that he was assisting prior to us. After providing us with room keys, he gave me a parking pass to put on my dashboard (parking is $10). We entered a very clean room that had both a refrigerator and microwave (very beneficial considering that my wife and I brought our breakfast meal prep for the next morning), along with a nice view of the neighboring Six Flags amusement park. Speaking of the amusement park...the room was well-insulated; therefore, we could not hear the screaming of the patrons on the roller coaster that faced our room. I'm so glad that I took heed to my wife's advice, we experienced a comfortable and safe stay at the Courtyard Vallejo Napa Valley!
