I brought two bikes to Bennett's for repair. One had a flat tire which was handled quickly. Unfortunately, the tire became flat again on my way home. The bike mechanic, Mike, apologized and said he missed a piece of glass. Then one of the owners came out and apologized. Within minutes I was on my way again. It is a reflection of the honesty and integrity - the culture of the store - that I was not told that it is a shame that I got another flat. No charge for the second repair. As a result, I brought in my Brompton bike which had been poorly repaired elsewhere. Mike had me leave the bike for several days. All the work was done PERFECTLY in only two days and at a reasonable price. Poor customer service. Took my bike in for a flat and the guy working there was speaking down on me as if I'm supposed to know why. Made me put in air in the tire myself. Tire ended up having a puncture and he "fixed" it but still have this noticeable opening on my tire. Not sure if it's supposed to look like that but nonetheless, I will not be returning. read more

Very helpful and honest! The best bike Shop in Staten Island! I admit I am an amateur when it comes to bikes and was not sure if my tire was flat and needed to be changed. So I took it in and let them be the judge. After about 10 minutes with my bike he returned it filled with air. Told me it was not flat just needed air. He could have sold me up the river as I am not bike savvy but he filled up my tires for no charge and gained a life long customer. Beautiful bike shop. Oh, and there's a cute dog in there. With the pandemic, all local bike shops have been super busy. I recently purchased a new bike but there was a malfunction with the front brake so I called Bennett's and they were overwhelmed with business. Bennett's has been around longer than me. While I haven't purchased anything from them in over a decade, I gotta give them this plug. Bennett's was in the neighborhood I grew up in, and They maintained every bike I grew up on... cheap department store bikes and all, just cause my parents would bring it to them. Never had a bad brake, bent metal part... etc. Fast forward to 2015, My brother purchased a Cannondale 29'r from them and it runs BEAUTIFULLY. He lives closer, so this is his Local Bike Shop.... otherwise it'd be mine as well. They do regular tuneups for a stupidly low price. popped in once or twice recently and it still stocks everything you need to get going, along with the old fashioned "Customer is always right" attitude.... OK so May is here and it's time to start getting in shape for the summer. If you're like me and prefer being outdoors as opposed to a gym what do you do. You buy a bicycle! Bikes today are ridiculously expensive, I had two options: 1) Order a bike on line from $150 and up 2) Go to Bennett's Bicycle and purchase one for no less than $300. The deal breaker for ordering a bike on line is that you have to put it together!! Ya...OK! I'm not all thumbs but I'm no bicycle builder. Anyway, long story short, Bennett's (the only real bike shop on SI), has a nice variety of bikes ranging from inexpensive to very expensive. Bikes for kids through adults. Pay cash and drop the tax! Proving to me again that they are worth 5 stars!! A few months back My boyfriend and I bought bikes together and had a great experience. I wrote a review and left 5 stars. Recently, I had an issue with that bike and am even more proud to say that these guys still deserve 5 stars!! The bike I bought awhile back was a white specialized jynx. After about 3 outings, I said to my boyfriend that we need to clean it because it looks dirty. When we got home, he cleaned it up like new but it still looked "dirty". Out of the bright light of the sun and store/home lighting, we could see that the back part of the bike was dis-colored slightly. Toward the back there was an orangy hue to the paint that was unnoticeable before. It was obvious by the straight lines of the discoloration that it was a manufacturers defect. I called the shop and explained the issue. I was told to bring the bike in so it could be assessed. During that week George called me and said he spoke to the manufacturer and they wanted some pics. I brought the bike in to George and he had someone take some pics of the issue. In the stores light and in the pics it was so hard to see the issue. I was afraid they wouldn't help me bc they couldn't see what I saw. George said he didn't see what I was talking about but that it didn't matter bc I was unhappy. He took the pics, sent them to specialized and said I could continue to ride my bike. About a week later, George called me and said they will replace the frame. Another few days later, he called again and said not only did they send a frame, but they sent a whole new bike! I was shocked but pleasantly surprised. I brought my bike back in that weekend and they built the new one right there for me. No orangish hue on this one! Still a happy camper and very impressed with their service!! Cheap would not describe it, but thy know their stuff and while there is a feel of used car sales dealership inside - it has it's own weird charm to it. Buying a bike? The black guy that works there is extremely rude we started going into the store but there were several people in there so they asked us to wait outside so we did no problem, but he kept on going on and on. When I was a kid, Bennett's was the place to go. Lots of fond memories. I lived off-island for many years, and have recently moved back. The three experiences I've had at the shop since coming back last year have ranged from frustrating to just awful. I've dealt with multiple staff members and their attitudes have ranged from disinterested and grudgingly helpful, to flat out rude. My last trip to Bennett's had me cursing out loud as I drove away, (the issue with my bike unaddressed and unresolved). From now on I will GLADLY take the ferry to Manhattan, or drive into Brooklyn, for my bike repairs. read more

Nice selection of bikes, but deceptive sales practices. One of the salesmen, an older gentleman, showed me a trek hybrid that had several models in the line. The most expensive of the 3 he showed me happened to be the right size frame, or so he said. The cheaper models were smaller. When i asked about the least expensive model and how it differed from the mid tier and most expensive, he said with a straight face "that bike is for a smaller rider. Each model is a different size frame." I suppose he thought i was an idiot and did not know that these bikes all have different frame sizes available to fit people of all sizes. This is a business that is 3 generations strong. That in itself should tell you that you don't stay in business that long (116 years) without doing something right, and they do it right. I've lived on S.I. all my life and have seen many bike shops come and go but Bennett's is the store to visit if you're interested in finding a quality bike, for a competitive price combined with the professional mechanical assistance needed if and when that time arrives. They treat all customers with respect, will never overcharge you and stand behind their products 100%. From little kid bikes to full blown carbon fiber, the highest standards of service are always visible. You'd be foolish to try any other avenue for bicycles. read more

Very disappointed with poor $2500 road bike packing job for shipping - No fork axle block, fork legs poked thru bottom box box and got mangled - Rear derailleur not adjust to inner most (largest) gear and rear derailleur hanger bent, frame and rear derailleur stressed, box wasnt reinforced for side loads either - front and rear brakes and derailluer bolts not tightened down and lost, They must have had some stupid careless, tech working on this pack job hours of my time replacing these things and dont have use of the bike in the meantime I am the buyer, receiver of the bike I'm pissed at the ebay seller, but it's not really his fault, he gave me $200 back (out of a 1800 sale, still would rather have not had to deal with this There's almost no recourse against this shop (live in cali now) and it pains me to write this review for an otherwise decent, longstanding shop LESSON LEARNED- DONT BRING YOUR BIKE THERE FOR PACKING UNLESS YOU BARK AT THEM ABOUT PROPER PACKING read more

Just can't seem to be able to buy a bike in this place! Went in a few years ago to buy a road bike. I'm an in for a penny in for a pound kind of person and I wanted to see good bikes. If it wasn't good I likely would not ride it. What he had in stock was a cheap Giant with entry level components. Not good if your riding with a bike club. I ended up going somewhere else and bought a high end Trek Madone...Just the other day I was looking for a Cannondale Quick for a more casual ride. Nobody helped me. Ended up buying a Cannondale Quick carbon1 from Mikes bike shop. Bennetts has been in business for so long they have forgotten what customer service is. There are other bike shops out there guys! I bought a carbon fiber cyclocross fork online , first stop at a brooklyn bike shop it seems they don't know what they were doing b'coz aside from the service fee they are trying to sell me a headset. Second stop a bike shop at staten island the same thing & worst part is aside from the headset the incharge of the store included a disc brake in his list. Finally, on my last stop at BENNETT's bicycles, I told the guy i want my fork change by just looking at my bike he just charge me with the service fee and thats it. He did not add anything else nor try to sell stuff to me. He even told me if i had came earlier i could have just waited while he change the fork. I bought a bike from this shop in February of 2016. Lucas told me I would get a year's worth of repairs for my bike. Several months later, the axle on my bike broke. When I spoke with Lucas over the phone, he first stated that they would be able to provide me with a temporary bike while they fixed it, but unfortunately, he went back on what he said the next day and said it might take three weeks for me to get a new bike and that he never said I would get a temporary bike. Then Lucas calls me the next day and tells me, "Okay good news. We were able to fix your bike and you don't have to wait. Come on down today to pick up the bike". So I did go there to pick up my bike, and I showed up with doughnuts for the whole staff because I wanted to show my appreciation for fixing my bike. So when I show up, he tells me that I have to pay $60 for the repair. You said that I would get a year's worth of repairs, and now you're charging me $60 for a repair that is so minor? After that, I would occasionally go into the store and pick up accessories for my bike here and there, but I was disappointed with the whole experience. Then my bike was stolen, which I am in no way, shape, or form saying that's their fault, or that they should get provide me with a new bike. My biggest qualm was how they treated the matter. I called up the store, and again spoke to Lucas about how I lost my bike. I told him I would just need the serial number and/or a copy of the receipt so that I may take it to the police (I didn't have my receipt so I needed there help on this one). Lucas said that they didn't have my receipt or the serial number, which to me is total non-sense because any small business should be keeping track of invoices and inventory, especially if it is within one business year. So after trying to get in touch with the owner, Lucas started to get rude with me over the phone, would keep on cutting me off, and then proceeded to hang up on me. You know, the majority of these bike stores preach how much better it is to get a bike from a small bike shop opposed to a major chain store like Target, but the reality is that these stores provide more value for your purchase, especially if you just want a bike to get to work. Bare minimum, you'll get a year warranty from Target (or Walmart, etc.), get actual free repairs, and if you lose your receipt or would like to return it, you'll have someone there to actually help you through the process. Why? Because they have been trained in customer service, unlike the staff at Jersey Cycles. The work attitude from most of the employees at Jersey Cycles is horrendous, which makes sense being that the majority of them are young kids who sit around on their phones all day and only work when they have to. Then you have someone like Lucas, who seems genuine and cares about what he does, but as soon as he sells you on a bike, he doesn't care too much to help you afterwards. Overall, I wish I had never bought the bike. It was a really good bike, and it is my fault I had it stolen but the least you can do is be honest with me about the service you are providing me and give me some actual customer service when I need it. Spending over $500 in that store, you would think that's not asking too much, but for Lucas and his staff, apparently it is. Don't go in there to buy a bike. There are better bike stores in the surrounding areas, or you can buy one from a store like Target. But do yourself a favor and do not buy it from this store, because they are not genuine, they are not customer friendly, and you will not get your money's worth!!! read more
