There is a reason that Bennett's is an institution on Staten Island. Their customer service is good and they truly appear to enjoy introducing others to biking. They may come off as a little gruff and no nonsense, but they know Bikes. A friend and I went to Bennett's Bike's in June of 2010 and each purchased a bike. We bought Treks and the service that day was excellent. The guys at the store really took their time and talked to us and really helped us figure out what we needed. Being beginner bikers about to invest in a fairly expensive bike it was a little intimidating and they explained various aspects of the bikes and recommended the Trek. Since then I have been back twice. Once to buy a carrier for the car and they not only had the carrier in stock, but showed me several times how to put it on and take it off. They were patient and showed a genuine concern that I could do it and it would be safe. The second time I went back was due to the wire that connects the back brake to the handlebar. I brought it in, expecting to have to leave the bike for a few days as the shop was crowded. The owner took one look at it and asked me to hang out for a few minutes and proceeded to fix it. I bought a bike from this shop in February of 2016. Lucas told me I would get a year's worth of repairs for my bike. Several months later, the axle on my bike broke. When I spoke with Lucas over the phone, he first stated that they would be able to provide me with a temporary bike while they fixed it, but unfortunately, he went back on what he said the next day and said it might take three weeks for me to get a new bike and that he never said I would get a temporary bike. Then Lucas calls me the next day and tells me, "Okay good news. We were able to fix your bike and you don't have to wait. Come on down today to pick up the bike". So I did go there to pick up my bike, and I showed up with doughnuts for the whole staff because I wanted to show my appreciation for fixing my bike. So when I show up, he tells me that I have to pay $60 for the repair. You said that I would get a year's worth of repairs, and now you're charging me $60 for a repair that is so minor? After that, I would occasionally go into the store and pick up accessories for my bike here and there, but I was disappointed with the whole experience. Then my bike was stolen, which I am in no way, shape, or form saying that's their fault, or that they should get provide me with a new bike. My biggest qualm was how they treated the matter. I called up the store, and again spoke to Lucas about how I lost my bike. I told him I would just need the serial number and/or a copy of the receipt so that I may take it to the police (I didn't have my receipt so I needed there help on this one). Lucas said that they didn't have my receipt or the serial number, which to me is total non-sense because any small business should be keeping track of invoices and inventory, especially if it is within one business year. So after trying to get in touch with the owner, Lucas started to get rude with me over the phone, would keep on cutting me off, and then proceeded to hang up on me. You know, the majority of these bike stores preach how much better it is to get a bike from a small bike shop opposed to a major chain store like Target, but the reality is that these stores provide more value for your purchase, especially if you just want a bike to get to work. Bare minimum, you'll get a year warranty from Target (or Walmart, etc.), get actual free repairs, and if you lose your receipt or would like to return it, you'll have someone there to actually help you through the process. Why? Because they have been trained in customer service, unlike the staff at Jersey Cycles. The work attitude from most of the employees at Jersey Cycles is horrendous, which makes sense being that the majority of them are young kids who sit around on their phones all day and only work when they have to. Then you have someone like Lucas, who seems genuine and cares about what he does, but as soon as he sells you on a bike, he doesn't care too much to help you afterwards. Overall, I wish I had never bought the bike. It was a really good bike, and it is my fault I had it stolen but the least you can do is be honest with me about the service you are providing me and give me some actual customer service when I need it. Spending over $500 in that store, you would think that's not asking too much, but for Lucas and his staff, apparently it is. Don't go in there to buy a bike. There are better bike stores in the surrounding areas, or you can buy one from a store like Target. But do yourself a favor and do not buy it from this store, because they are not genuine, they are not customer friendly, and you will not get your money's worth!!! read more

Bringing my bike into to Bennetts today brought back a whole host of good memories waiting around with a family member. Pondering which was the best way to go (if any) to repair my well run bike. As they did then, they do now, they are still there helping Staten Islanders to ponder on the best care of their bikes. Its good to see some things don't ever change and Bennetts is one of them. Do not even bother. The salespeople there are plain rude and are out to deceive you and rip you off. It's also obvious that they don't care about the customer at all. I wanted a bike that wasn't at the store (Trek 7.2 FX WSD) so they called Trek and placed an order. One of the salesman (Sean) told me it costs $479 but then an older gentleman who I believe may be the owner said $469. Sean tells me I will have to pay for shipping. When I say, "I have to pay for shipping?????!" the owner says, "She doesn't have to pay for shipping." I ask what the total will be after tax and Sean asks me what the sales rate is. Then he punches in some numbers and writes $510 on the sales slip. When I ask about a deposit Sean asks me if I'll be paying cash or credit. Before I answer he says if I pay by credit card each time they swipe the card they'd charge me tax!!! I should have just left the store at this point but this is the only shop on Staten Island that carries Trek. I paid the deposit in cash and asked Sean if he'd be calling me when the bike arrives. He says, "What's today? Thursday? It should be here around Tuesday but I guess I'll call you when it gets here since I have your number." I left the store VERY unhappy and about 10 minutes later went back asking to cancel the order. Sean asks me why and I told him I changed my mind. He tells the owner and the owner yells, "OK but you have to pay us 20% of the total." Their reason was once they place an order with Trek Trek will not let them cancel it. I really did not feel like losing $100 to these a**holes so I decided to keep the bike. I told them that I was not happy about how one person quoted me one price and another quoted me a different price. I also told them I did not like how one person told me I would have to pay for shipping and the other told me I didn't. Then Sean says, "So what? It worked out in your favor." Then the owner comes out and yells, "What do you want??!! If you had bought a bike from our store I would've just given you your money and told you to get out because I don't want to deal with you! But I can't cancel an order from Trek!" I also told him I didn't like how he just put down $510 without telling me what the tax was so I told him I want a new sales slip with the price of the bike and tax and then total. He pulls out the receipt from the register and as he's writing the new sales slip he says, "The tax is actually $40.57 so the total is $509.57." I knew that he had to have rounded off the number and honestly 43 cents isn't really a big deal but it's just the principle. Don't help these dishonest cheating people by shopping at their store. ----- They have the wrong sales tax programmed into their cash register. Instead of the 8.375% NYC sales tax they charged me 8.65%. I told them today when I went to pick up my bicycle and Sean says, "Oooh, one dollar!" It may only be one dollar but it's the principle. read more

I started coming to Bennets a few years ago when I bought my first single speed fixed gear bike. I stopped by occasionally for tubes and little things. Since single speeds are very simple I did allot of the maintenance myself. The first bad experience was when I went to get my cog and lockring tightened at the shop. Gave them the wheel and told them what's wrong ,i put it back on my bike and with the first pedal it slips.. I went back in bought a lockring tool and did it myself outside the shop correctly. So now they know me to be the guy that "does it himself" but now that I'm getting into higher end road bikes and gears I go in looking for help and they (joke around) saying that I was setting them up with a broken bike or something like that. all I wanted was to have my brake cables and housing changed out. I felt that I wasn't wanted in the store I just asked for the housing and cables and installed it myself. When I walk in they don't say hi they ask what I want. sadly I won't return to Bennett's even tho its the only bike shop on the island that kinda knows what they are doing. I've been using this bike shop for purchases and repairs for more than 20 years! Their prices are more than reasonable, and if they don't have something in stock they always have it the next day. Their repair work is outstanding and they stand by what they do. I would shop nowhere else! read more

I've taken a number of bikes to Bennett's for tune-ups and repairs. The work is done quickly--sometimes on the spot--and the owners and their staff are very good at what they do. They're busy because the shop is so popular, but in my experience they have always been courteous and friendly. Tom Bennett has been especially creative in troubleshooting problems that have come up with my autistic daughter's bike, problems rooted in the way she rides it. I accompanied a friend recently who went to buy a bike. He explained how he intended to use it, and so they recommended a bike. My friend was interested in a more expensive bike, mainly because of the look of it, but they urged him to buy the one they recommended. read more

Great friendly service. They fix your bike while you wait. No pressure to buy more or do more work than is necessary. I love the place. I came in 10 minutes before they closed and they still worked on my bike for 30 minutes. Great shop. read more
